3 Greek School Greek School will begin on Wednesday, September 11 th with an Agiasmos Service at 3:30 p.m. in the church. Classroom assignments will be announced at the end of the service. Tuition for the School Yea Tuition for St. Vasilios members in good standing: Pre-K: $100 per student Kindergarten-6 th grade: $300 per student $500 maximum per family Tuition for members in good standing at another parish: Pre-K: $150 per student Kindergarten-6 th grade: $350 per student $550 maximum per family Must provide documentation of good standing to the church office Tuition for non-members of a parish: Pre-K: $300 per student Kindergarten-6 th grade: $500 per student $850 maximum per family Tuition includes books If you have any questions regarding the Greek School program you can contact Principal Dina Kalaitzidis at greekschool@stvasilios.org. Greek School consists of 8 grades Pre-K through 6 th, open to students in grades Kindergarten through 7 th grade in American School. Children entering Kindergarten can enroll in the Pre-School class. The Pre- School class will meet every Wednesday. Kindergarten through 6 th grade will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30-5:00 Our highly qualified and experienced teaching staff comes together to provide our community s children with knowledge of their heritage and Greek language. The staff adjusts the curriculum to the needs and abilities of our children who come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our curriculum consists of conversational skills, culture, reading, religion, writing and dance. In addition to this students perform dance at a number of church and city events throughout the school year. St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17 BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) 4 8th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel of Matthew At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS We are looking for volunteers to help with youth activities and to get them together for fun and fellowship. If you are College age, young adults or a parent we need you. We have created a calendar for the year September thru June with one meeting and one activity per month. We also have great ideas from past leaders and just need your help to make it happen! CEMETERY VISITS: Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make unscheduled cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside you are kindly asked to make an appointment during the week by calling the church office. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are only permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. HOSPITAL VISITS Salem Hospital is making a change in order to be in compliance with new privacy laws. This change will mean that we will no longer receive the list of Orthodox patients in the hospital. So, if you or a loved one will be in the hospital please call the church office so that we can pay you a pastoral visit. This change will also affect Beverly Hospital as well. Also, families of people in nursing home please call the church office so that their names will be included on the list of residents. If you are interested in making a donation for this event, please contact Pam Katsiris at or Bessie Silva at We will be skewering for the International Festival on Thursday, September 5, at 6 p.m. in the Educational Center. All are welcomed to assist. 6 As most of you know, while Church School is in session, parents, grandparents and friends gather in the Rev Andrew Demotses Community Center for fellowship and refreshments. These coffee hours are a place for us to reconnect with our St. Vasilios family, celebrate joys and be comforted during loss. The St. Val s PTA supplies and staffs our time together with volunteers, but has always welcomed and encouraged anyone from the community to sponsor a week. These sponsorships help defray the costs of paper goods and supplies. You can use these days to remember loved ones on their birthday, anniversary, name day, christening, celebrating a wedding or mourning at a funeral or memorial service, or just for the good health of family and friends. Just as the church and families have been feeling the squeeze of the slow economy, rising costs and limited incomes, the PTA has also been struggling with the continued pressures of financing our weekly fellowship. The weekly cost to put forth refreshments is approximately $250. This accounts for coffee and necessary condiments, donuts, muffins, and paper goods. We operate at a loss each and every week and it has become increasingly more difficult to subsidize. In addition, we try to focus our hard won fundraising dollars on student centered programming, events and improvements that effect student classrooms and experience. This year we will be offering FULL SPONSORSHIP for $150 with no other sponsors and no donation baskets placed on the tables, or $50 for a PARTIAL SPONSORSHIP. There may be multiple sponsors on such days, and a free will basket will be in place. We also welcome any homemade treat, fruit platter or sweet you would like to provide for the event. Your sponsorship will be listed in the Sunday Bulletin that is distributed in church and placed in a frame on the table of treats. We ask that you consider sponsoring a coffee hour in the near future or in the alternative, be generous at the free will baskets!
