SUNDAY March 19th 2017 NEW WEB PAGE: VENERATION OF THE HOLY CROSS With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast. Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross 1

3 This is an announcement and a directive from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta The Sacrament of Holy Unction All Parishioners should attempt to attend the service and be anointed with the blessed oil of Holy Unction. As the Priest anoints the forehead, checks, chin, palm and back of the hands, we should ask God s forgiveness. Therefore, family members will no longer be permitted to take Holy Unction home. However, the Priest may anoint those unable to attend the service of Holy Unction on another day. For those who are shut-ins, homebound, or infirm, please contact your priest for a visitation and the offering of healing prayers and the Holy Sacraments. 5 Κάνεις σωστά το σημείο του Σταυρού; Πώς θα γίνει στα χέρια μας ο σταυρός φόβητρο των δαιμόνων; Αν το κάνουμε σωστά. Αν το κάνουμε όπως μας παραδίδει και μας διδάσκει ή άγια Εκκλησία μας με πίστη, ευλάβεια, συναίσθηση, ιεροπρέπεια, ταπείνωση και διάκριση. Πώς δηλαδή; Αρχικά ενώνουμε τα τρία πρώτα δάκτυλα του δεξιού χεριού, ομολογώντας έτσι την πίστη μας σ ένα Θεό, πού είναι ταυτόχρονα και τρεις υποστάσεις, τρία πρόσωπα ο Πατήρ, ο Υιός και το Άγιο Πνεύμα -, ομοούσια, ενωμένα μεταξύ τους «αχωρίστως» και «αδιαιρέτως». Τα άλλα δύο δάκτυλα, πού ακουμπούν στην παλάμη, συμβολίζουν τις δύο φύσεις, δύο θελήσεις και δύο ενέργειες του Κυρίου μας, τη θεία και την ανθρώπινη. Μ αυτό τον τρόπο κάνουμε μια συμβολική ομολογία της ορθοδόξου πίστεως μας, που βάσεις και θεμέλιά της αποτελούν το τριαδολογικό και το χριστολογικό δόγμα. Μετά φέρνουμε το χέρι στο μέτωπο, τη σωματική περιοχή της διανοητικής λειτουργίας, φανερώνοντας έτσι ότι αγαπούμε το Θεό μ όλη τη διάνοια μας και ότι αφιερώνουμε σ Αυτόν όλες τις σκέψεις μας. Το χέρι έρχεται κατόπιν στην κοιλιά. Έτσι δηλώνουμε συμβολικά ότι προσφέρουμε στον Κύριο όλες τις επιθυμίες μας και όλα τα συναισθήματα μας. Τέλος, φέρνουμε το χέρι στους ώμους, πρώτα στο δεξιό και μετά στον αριστερό, ομολογώντας έτσι ότι και κάθε σωματική μας δραστηριότητα ανήκει σ Εκείνον. Ερμηνεία του Αγίου Κοσμά του Αιτωλού. Μιαν άλλη συμπληρωματική ερμηνεία, θεολογικότατη μέσα στην απλότητα της, μας δίνει στην πέμπτη διδαχή του ο άγιος Κοσμάς ο Αιτωλός: Ακούσατε, χριστιανοί μου, πώς πρέπει να γίνεται ο σταυρός και τι σημαίνει. Μας λέγει το Άγιον Ευαγγέλιον πώς ή αγία Τριάς, ο Θεός, δοξάζεται εις τον ουρανόν περισσότερο από τους αγγέλους. Τι πρέπει να κάμεις και εσύ; Σμίγεις τα τρία σου δάκτυλα με το δεξιόν το χέρι σου και μην ημπορώντας να ανεβείς εις τον ουρανόν να προσκυνήσης, βάνεις το χέρι σου εις το κεφάλι σου, διατί το κεφάλι σου είναι στρογγυλό και φανερώνει τον ουρανόν και λέγεις με το στόμα: Καθώς εσείς οι άγγελοι δοξάζετε την Αγίαν Τριάδα εις τον ουρανόν, έτσι και εγώ, ως δούλος ανάξιος, δοξάζω και προσκυνώ την Αγίαν Τριάδα. Και καθώς αυτά τα δάκτυλα είναι τρία είναι ξεχωριστά, είναι και μαζί έτσι είναι και ή αγία Τριάς, ο Θεός, τρία πρόσωπα και ένας μόνος Θεός. Κατεβάζεις το χέρι σου από το κεφάλι σου και το βάνεις εις την κοιλίαν σου και λέγεις: Σε προσκυνώ και σε λατρεύω, Κύριε μου, ότι κατεδέχθης και εσαρκώθης εις την κοιλίαν της Θεοτόκου δια τας αμαρτίας μας. Το βάζεις πάλιν εις τον δεξιόν σου ώμον και λέγεις: Σε παρακαλώ, Θεέ μου, να με συγχώρησης και να με βάλεις εις τα δεξιά σου με τους δικαίους. Βάνοντας το πάλι εις τον αριστερόν ώμον λέγεις: Σε παρακαλώ, Κύριε μου, μη με βάλεις εις τα αριστερά με τους αμαρτωλούς. Έπειτα κύπτοντας κάτω εις την γην: Σε δοξάζω, Θεέ μου, σε προσκυνώ και σε λατρεύω, ότι, καθώς εβάλθηκες εις τον τάφον, έτσι θα βαλθώ και εγώ. Και όταν σηκώνεσαι ορθός, φανερώνεις την Ανάστασιν και λέγεις: Σε δοξάζω, Κύριε μου, σε προσκυνώ και σε λατρεύω, πώς αναστήθηκες από τους νεκρούς δια να μας χαρίσεις την ζωήν την αιώνιον. Αυτό σημαίνει ο πανάγιος σταυρός. Ας το χρησιμοποιούμε λοιπόν όσο μπορούμε πιο συχνά, αγιάζοντας μ αυτό κάθε πτυχή της καθημερινής και της πνευματικής μας ζωής. 5

EPISTLE:St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." Και τους έλεγε ακόμη ο Ιησούς: «Σας βεβαιώνω πως υπάρχουν μερικοί ανάμεσα σ αυτούς που βρίσκονται εδώ, οι οποίοι δε θα γευτούν το θάνατο, πριν δουν να έρχεται δυναμικά η βασιλεία του Θεού». 10 Saturday of Lazarus Retreat Saturday, April 8 th Time: After church services around 11am. All children of ALL ages invited to participate. 12 GREAT LENT AND HOLY WEEK 2017 (February 27 April 15) The Lenten fasting discipline commences after Forgiveness Vespers on February 26 and concludes with the breaking of the fast at Pascha on April 16. In general, the fasting rules during Great Lent and Holy Week are as follows: WEEKDAYS (Monday Friday) are observed as Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, alcoholic beverages, and olive oil. WEEKENDS (Saturday and Sunday) are observed as Wine and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit alcoholic beverages and olive oil. In addition, two special feastdays that fall during this period Annunciation (March 25) and Palm Sunday (April 9, this year) are kept as Fish, Wine, and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit fish with backbones, in addition to alcoholic beverages and olive oil. There are certain days of the Holy Week cycle that have special fasting rules. Great and Holy Thursday (April 13, this year) is observed as a Wine and Oil Day due to the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist. Great and Holy Saturday (April 15, this year) is observed as a Strict Fast Day the only Saturday of the year kept as a strict fast; however, wine (but not oil) is permitted. Additional Notes: 1. Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. 2. Fasting on the weekdays of the first week of Great Lent is especially severe. The strictest observance would be to take only two meals during this week one on Wednesday evening and one on Friday evening after the services scheduled for those nights keeping Pure Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday as absolute fasts (i.e., no food whatsoever). For many this is impracticable. A good starting place to work towards the strict observance is to keep the first day of Great Lent, Pure Monday, as an absolute fast and to limit meals on the other days. 3. It is a pious practice to observe Great and Holy Friday as an absolute fast. If one does not have the strength to do this, it is good to abstain from food until after venerating the epitaphios during Vespers on this day. 4. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. 5. Before you attempt to strictly follow the fasting guidelines, consult with Fr. Gregory. It is very easy to lose sight of the fact that fasting is merely a means to an end (that is, our salvation) and not an end in itself. 6. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father. 12

14 Coffee Sponsorship It is amazing how a modest offering of pastries and coffee after Liturgy on Sundays can provide the spark for so much fellowship and community feeling! Our Sunday coffee hours not only give us a chance to visit with friends, but also to exercise our philoxenia or hospitality, towards our guest and newcomers to the parish, who have just participated in the Divine Liturgy with us. Typically, our coffee hours are hosted by Philoptochos and various ministries. But families or groups of friends may consider hosting one as well. Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, jello, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup. If anyone would like to just sponsor items Philoptochos will serve. Please consider hosting. It is a small investment to bring a great deal of joy to our Church Family! 16 Κυριακή Γ Νηστειών (Σταυροπροσκυνήσεως) Κυριακή της Σταυροπροσκυνήσεως σήμερα και η Εκκλησία μας προβάλλει το Σταυρό του Χριστού. Η προβολή αυτή του Σταυρού έχει διπλή έννοια και σκοπό. Αποτελεί, από τη μια, προετοιμασία για την υποδοχή σταυρικού πάθους του Χριστού, του οποίου θα γίνουμε μάρτυρες κατά τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα. Από την άλλη μας υπενθυμίζει την κλήση του Χριστού προς τους μαθητές του να σηκώσουν το δικό τους σταυρό για να αποδείξουν την ταυτότητά τους. Λίγες εβδομάδες πριν από το πάθος του o Κύριος κάλεσε τους μαθητές του και τα πλήθη του λαού για να τους πει λόγια βαρυσήμαντα για τη ζωή τους και τη ζωή όλων μας. Όποιος θέλει, είπε, να με ακολουθήσει και να γίνει μαθητής μου, ας απαρνηθεί τον εαυτό του και ας πάρει τη σταθερή απόφαση να υποστεί για μένα όχι μόνο κάθε θλίψη και δοκιμασία αλλά και θάνατο σταυρικό και τότε ας με ακολουθήσει. Τι σημαίνει όμως απαρνούμαι τον εαυτό μου; Ο απόστολος Παύλος το εκφράζει με την εικόνα της νέκρωσης του παλαιού ανθρώπου. Απαρνούμαι τον εαυτό μου σημαίνει ότι νεκρώνω τον παλαιό άνθρωπο, τον «κακό μου εαυτό». Παύω να υπάρχω γι αυτόν. Αρνούμαι δηλαδή και νεκρώνω τα θελήματα και τις επιθυμίες και τις ροπές του παλαιού ανθρώπου. Ακόμη και αν το δω να επαναστατεί, να αντιδρά, να επιζητεί με μανία και επιμονή καθετί αμαρτωλό, εγώ δεν υποκύπτω δεν του δίνω σημασία. Έχω αρνηθεί όχι μόνο κάτι από τον εαυτό μου αλλά όλο τον παλαιό εαυτό μου. Αρνούμαι τον παλαιό εαυτό μου σημαίνει υποτάσσομαι στο άγιο θέλημα του Θεού. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ακολουθώ τον Κύριο όπου με οδηγεί. Καλούμαστε να θυσιάσουμε και να θάψουμε, κατά τον Απ. Παύλο, «τον παλαίον άνθρωπον», ώστε να αναγεννηθεί ο νέος «ο ανακαινούμενος κατ εικόνα του κτίσαντος αυτόν» (Κολ. 3,9-10). Καθότι «ει γαρ σύμφυτοι γεγόναμεν τω ομοιώματι του θανάτου αυτού, αλλά και της αναστάσεως εσόμεθα, τούτο γινώσκοντες ότι ο παλαιός ημών άνθρωπος συνεσταυρώθη ίνα καταργήθη το σώμα της αμαρτιας ει δε απεθάνομεν συν Χριστώ πιστεύομεν ότι και συζήσομεν αυτώ» (Ρωμ.6,5-8). Γι αυτό και ο Σταυρός αποτελεί σύμβολο όχι μόνο θυσίας, αλλά και λύτρωσης. Όταν ο Χριστός μας καλεί να σηκώσουμε το δικό μας σταυρό αντιπαραβάλλει τη δική του σταυρική θυσία και το παράδειγμα του που έλαβε την πρωτοβουλία να σταυρωθεί για να μας λυτρώσει από την αμαρτία και το θάνατο. Όπως οι αρχές και εξουσίες του κόσμου απέρριψαν τον ίδιο τον Χριστό και το Ευαγγέλιό του και τον οδήγησαν στο σταυρό κατά τον ίδιο τρόπο και οι Μαθητές του διαχρονικά θα δεχθούν το δικό τους σταυρό γιατί πάντοτε θα υπάρχουν εκείνοι που αντιστρατεύονται τον Ιησού Χριστό, ως Υιό του Θεού, απορρίπτουν το σωτήριο έργο του και τη διδασκαλία του Ευαγγελίου του. Ο σταυρός που μας καλεί να σηκώσουμε είναι οι θλίψεις και τα βάσανα της ζωής και παράλληλα η άρνηση των αμαρτωλών επιθυμιών και το φθοροποιών παθών. Η άρση του σταυρού μας είναι απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για τη μετοχή στη ζωή του Χριστού. Όμως, όπως διαβεβαιώνει ο Απ. Παύλος, «πιστός ο Θεός, ος ουκ εάσει υμάς πειρασθήναι υπέρ ο δύνασθε, αλλά ποιήσει συν τω πειρασμώ και την έκβασιν του δύνασθαι υμάς υπενεγκείν» (Α. Κορ. 10,13 ). Καμιά θλίψη και δοκιμασία δεν θα υπήρχε στη ζωή μας, αν ο ίδιος ο Θεός δεν θα μας έδινε την ίδια στιγμή τη δύναμη για να την αντέξουμε. Υποτασσόμαστε στο θέλημα του Θεού, υπομένοντας κάθε δοκιμασία, η οποία χαρακτηρίζεται από τον Κύριο ως Σταυρός. Αυτή η αγόγγυστη υποταγή οδηγεί τον άνθρωπο έμπρακτα στο «ακολουθείτω μοι». Ωστόσο ο Κύριος στη διδασκαλία του είπε ότι όποιος θέλει να σώσει την επίγεια ζωή του θα χάσει την αιώνια. Αντίθετα, τονίζει: «ος δ αν απολέση την εαυτού ψυχήν ένεκεν εμού και του ευαγγελίου, ούτος σώσει αυτήν». Διότι «Τι γαρ ωφελήσει άνθρωπον εάν κερδήση τον κόσμον όλον, και ζημιωθή την ψυχήν αυτού; ή τι δώσει άνθρωπος αντάλλαγμα της ψυχής αυτού;» Έτσι τονίζει πόσο μεγάλη αξία έχει η ψυχή μας. Δεν συγκρίνεται με όλα τα αγαθά του κόσμου. Έχει ασυγκρίτως ανώτερη αξία από όλα τα πλούτη, τις τιμές και τις απολαύσεις αυτής της ζωής. Γι αυτήν ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος και γι αυτήν έχυσε το αίμα του 16

17 επάνω στο σταυρό. Ο σταυρός του Χριστού συνεχίζει διαχρονικά να αποτελεί την κρίση του κόσμου, γι αυτό και ο Χριστός καλεί τους μαθητές και οπαδούς του να συνεχίσουν ακατάπαυστα να σηκώνουν το δικό τους σταυρό που είναι ο σταυρός του Χριστού. «Όστις θέλει οπίσω μου ακολουθείν, απαρνησάσθω εαυτόν και αράτω τον σταυρόν αυτού, και ακολουθείτω μοι» Αυτό είναι το ύψιστο της αποστολής του Χριστιανισμού και της Εκκλησίας μέσα στο κόσμο. Να δίδει τη μαρτυρία του σταυρού του Χριστού για να ελευθερώνει τον άνθρωπο από τον άρχοντα του σκότους. Ο σταυρός του Χριστού ελευθερώνει και οδηγεί προς τη σωτηρία, τη ζωή και την ανάσταση. Ο σταυρός του Χριστού είναι η σφραγίδα της υιοθεσίας του ανθρώπου από τον Θεό. Είναι το σημείο της εύλαλης αγάπης του Θεού προς τον άνθρωπο. 18 The First Celebration and Location of Greek Independence Day It's been over 176 years since we celebrated by decree for the first time officially on March 25th the revolution of 1821 in the then Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Saint Irene, located between the streets Aiolou and Athinas. Theodoros Kolokotronis was buried in the same church in March 25th was celebrated for the first time in 1838, as a memorial day for the Greek Fighters of 1821, and since then the celebration was introduced throughout pan-hellenism. The establishment of the feast of March 25th is due to two people. One was the Fighter in 1821 who became Mayor of Athens, Dimitrios Kallifronas. The second was George Glarakis, Secretary of State for the Church, Public Education and the Interior, who had proposed to King Otto to adopt a decree which would set March 25th as a national celebration. The celebration began on the evening prior with 21 cannon shots. The next day, Friday morning, the day of the Annunciation, Athens awoke to 21 more cannon shots, a symbolic number. The morning of March 25, 1838 a doxology was chanted in the then Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Irene, located between the streets Aiolou and Athinas. The doxology was attended by Otto who was dressed in a traditional foustanela. In the evening there was organized by the Municipality dancing in the square of the old Palace in which all the youth of the city participated regardless of their social class, and many Fighters from 1821 attended. At night the Mayor illuminated with oil lanterns the main streets and the Acropolis. It is said that the Athenians were left astonished when they saw lanterns on Lykavettos held by the youth of that time forming a huge bright cross with the words: "In this conquer" ("Εν τούτω Νίκα"). The first Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, the Church of Saint Irene, is said to have been built from the ruins of seventy Byzantine churches that were destroyed during the Bavarian occupation. With the transfer of the seat of the Greek government from Nafplio to Athens, Saint Irene became the official cathedral of the capital. The renovation and repair of the church was undertaken in 1845 by the famous architect Lysandros Kaftatzoglou. The project was completed in The coming of age ceremony of King Otto took place here in 1835, and in 1845 Theodoros Kolokotronis, the hero of 1821, was buried here, which is why next to it is Koloktronis Street. There are also historical accounts of that day. Ministers, the people of the spirit from Hermias Street (today's Ermou), came down and reached the outside of Saint Irene. They followed the coffin of Kolokotronis and his horse dressed in black. In the same church there took place in 1877 the burial of Constantine Kanaris, the admiral and fighter of the revolution of In the Sacred Church of Saint Irene Queen Amalia made her confession. There was also a doxology in this church for the Greek Constitution, led by the Teacher of the Nation Neophytos Vamvas. Construction of the new Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation began on Christmas Day, 1842 with the laying of the cornerstone by King Otto and Queen Amalia. Workers used marble from 72 demolished churches to build the Cathedral's immense walls. Three architects and 20 years later, it was complete. On May 21, 1862, the completed Cathedral was dedicated to the Annunciation of the Mother of God (Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου) by the King and Queen, to celebrate on the national feast day of March 25th. Inside are the tombs of two saints killed by the Ottoman Turks during the Ottoman period: Saint Philothei and Patriarch Gregory V. Translated by John Sanidopoulos. 18
