The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 4 The Gospel According to Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." 5 Άγιος Ευστάθιος και η συνοδεία του, Θεοπίστη η σύζυγος του, Αγάπιος και Θεόπιστος τα παιδιά του Εὐστάθιον βοῦς παγγενῆ χαλκοῦς φλέγει, Καὶ παγγενῆ σὺ τοῦ Θεοῦ σῴζεις Λόγε. Εἰκάδι Εὐστάθιος γενεῇ ἅμα βοῒ καύθη. Ο Ευστάθιος ήταν αξιωματικός περίβλεπτος στη Ρώμη και στη χριστιανική πίστη προσήλθε με θαυμαστό τρόπο. Όταν κάποτε κυνηγούσε ένα ελάφι, είδε στα κερατά του να φέρει σταυρό και άκουσε μία φωνή που τον καλούσε στην ορθή πίστη. Έτσι πίστεψε και βαπτίστηκε με το όνομα Ευστάθιος από Πλακίδας που ονομαζόταν πριν, καθώς επίσης και η γυναίκα του Τατιανή σε Θεοπίστη, αλλά και τα δυο τους παιδιά Αγάπιος και Θεόπιστος. Όταν ο αυτοκράτωρ Τραϊανός έμαθε ότι ασπάσθηκε το χριστιανισμό, του αφαίρεσε τον ανώτερο στρατιωτικό βαθμό που είχε και τον εξόρισε με όλη του την οικογένεια. Κατά την πορεία όμως, τον χώρισαν από τη σύζυγο του Θεοπίστη και τα δύο του παιδιά, το Θεόπιστο και τον Αγάπιο. Το γεγονός αυτό, πίκρανε πολύ τον Ευστάθιο. τη στρατηγική που τον διέκρινε συνετέλεσε κατά πολύ στην νίκη. Στο δρόμο μάλιστα, βρήκε την οικογένεια του και ένοιωσε μεγάλη χαρά. Ο διάδοχος, όμως, του Τραϊανού, Αδριανός, απαίτησε από τον Ευστάθιο να παραστεί στις θυσίες των ειδωλολατρικών θεών. Ο Ευστάθιος, βέβαια, αρνήθηκε, με αποτέλεσμα να βασανιστεί αυτός και η οικογένεια του. Αλλά η αγάπη τους στο Χριστό ενδυνάμωνε την ψυχή τους στα βασανιστήρια, ενθυμούμενοι μάλιστα τους θείους λόγους, που λένε: «Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς ὑπομένει πειρασμὸν ὅτι δόκιμος γενόμενος λήψεται τὸν στέφανον τῆς ζωῆς, ὃν ἐπηγγείλατο ὁ Κύριος τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν» (Επιστολή Ιακώβου, α' 12). Πανευτυχής, δηλαδή, είναι ο άνθρωπος που βαστάει με υπομονή τη δοκιμασία των θλίψεων. Διότι έτσι γίνεται σταθερός και δοκιμασμένος, για να πάρει το λαμπρό και ένδοξο στεφάνι της αιώνιας ζωής, που υποσχέθηκε ο Κύριος σ' αυτούς που Τον αγαπούν. Τελικά, ο Ευστάθιος με την οικογένεια του πέθαναν μέσα σε χάλκινο πυρακτωμένο βόδι (117 μ.χ.). Μετά από χρόνια, όταν ο Τραϊανός περιήλθε σε μεγάλη πολεμική δυσχέρεια, θυμήθηκε τον ικανότατο αξιωματικό του Ευστάθιο. Τον επανέφερε λοιπόν στην υπηρεσία, και ο Ευστάθιος με τη γενναιότητα αλλά και

Έτσι προφήτευσε ο προφήτης Ησαΐας για τον Πρόδρομο του Κυρίου, Ιωάννη: «Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τὴ ἐρήμω, ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου, εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τᾶς τρίβους αὐτοῦ». (Ησαΐας μ', 3). Δηλαδή, φωνή ανθρώπου, που φωνάζει στην έρημο και λέει: «Ετοιμάστε το δρόμο, απ όπου θα έλθει ο Κύριος σε σας. Κάνετε ίσιους και ομαλούς τους δρόμους, από τους οποίους θα περάσει». Ξεριζώστε, δηλαδή, από τις ψυχές σας τα αγκάθια των αμαρτωλών παθών και ρίξτε μακριά τα λιθάρια του εγωισμού και της πώρωσης και καθαρίστε με μετάνοια το εσωτερικό σας, για να δεχθεί τον Κύριο. Η φωνή αυτή, που ήταν ο Ιωάννης, γεννήθηκε με θαυμαστό τρόπο. Ο Πατέρας του Ζαχαρίας ήταν Ιερέας. Την ώρα του θυμιάματος μέσα στο θυσιαστήριο, είδε άγγελο Κυρίου, που του ανήγγειλε, ότι θα αποκτούσε γιο και θα ονομαζόταν Ιωάννης. Ο Ζαχαρίας σκίρτησε από χαρά, αλλά δυσπίστησε. Η γυναίκα του ήταν στείρα και γριά, πώς θα γινόταν αυτό που άκουγε; Τότε ο άγγελος του είπε ότι για να τιμωρηθεί η δυσπιστία του, μέχρι να πραγματοποιηθεί η βουλή του Θεού, αυτός θα έμενε κωφάλαλος. Πράγματι, η Ελισάβετ συνέλαβε, και μετά εννιά μήνες έκανε γιο. Μετά οκτώ ήμερες, στην περιτομή του παιδιού, οι συγγενείς θέλησαν να του δώσουν το όνομα του πατέρα του, Ζαχαρία. Όμως, ο Ζαχαρίας, έγραψε επάνω σε πινακίδιο το όνομα Ιωάννης. Αμέσως δε, λύθηκε η γλώσσα του, και η χαρά για όλους ήταν μεγάλη. The Conception of St. John the Baptist The Conception of the Venerable Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, John: The holy Prophet Malachi prophesied that before the Messiah's birth His Forerunner would appear, and would indicate His coming. The Jews therefore in awaiting the Messiah also awaited the appearance of His Forerunner. In a city of the hills of Judea in the land of Palestine lived the righteous priest St Zachariah and his wife St Elizabeth, zealously observing the commandments of the Lord. The couple, however, had a misfortune: they remained childless in their old age, and they prayed unceasingly to God to grant them a child. Once, when St Zachariah took his turn as priest at the Temple of Jerusalem, he went into the Sanctuary to offer incense. Going behind the veil of the Sanctuary, he beheld an angel of God standing at the right side of the altar of incense. St Zachariah was astonished and halted in fear, but the angel said to him, "Fear not, Zachariah, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John." But Zachariah did not believe the words of the heavenly messenger, and then the angel said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you the good news. Behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things

7 come to pass, because you did not believe my words..." Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zachariah and they were astonished that he had not come out from the Sanctuary after so long a time. And when he did come out, he was supposed to pronounce a blessing upon the people, but could not do so because he had been struck speechless. When Zachariah explained by gestures that he was unable to speak, the people then understood that he had experienced a vision. The prophecy of the Archangel was fulfilled, and Righteous Elizabeth was delivered from her barrenness, and gave birth to John, the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord. Οσίες Ξανθίππη και Πολυξένη Οι Οσίες Ξανθίππη και Πολυξένη ήταν Ισπανίδες αδελφές και έζησαν στα μέσα του πρώτου αιώνα μετά Χριστόν, όταν Καίσαρ ήταν ο Κλαύδιος ο Α (41-54 μ.χ.). Η Ξανθίππη μαζί με το σύζυγο της Πρόβο, άρχοντος της χώρας, διδάχτηκε τη χριστιανική θρησκεία, και ήλθε σ' αυτή, από τον απόστολο Παύλο (βλ. Pωμ. ιε', 28). Η Πολυξένη ήταν παρθένος, προτού δε λάβη το άγιο βάπτισμα, είχε αρπαγή από κάποιον άνδρα ασελγή, αλλά η χάρις του Θεού την προστάτευσε και δεν του επέτρεψε να την διαφθείρη. Μεταβαίνοντας από τόπου εις τόπον άκουσε το κήρυγμα του αποστόλου Πέτρου και κατόπιν το κήρυγμα του αποστόλου Φιλίππου στην Ελλάδα. Τέλος, έγινε μαθήτρια του αποστόλου Ανδρέα, ο οποίος την έβάπτισε. Επανερχόμενη στην πατρίδα της, παρέλαβε μαζί της τον απόστολο Ονήσιμο και την συνοδοιπόρο των ταξιδιών της Ρεβέκκα, μαζί μέ την οποία είχε βαπτισθή. Και οι δύο αδελφές, εργάστηκαν για τη χριστιανική πίστη και οδήγησαν σ' αυτή πολλές γυναίκες. Πέθαναν και οι δύο ειρηνικά σε προχωρημένη ηλικία, χωρίς να πάψουν μέχρι και την τελευταία τους πνοή να στηρίζουν τις ασθενικές ψυχές στη χριστιανική ελπίδα.

8 Saint Xanthippe and Polyxene The name Xanthippe is synonymous with the shrew who railed at her husband Socrates. He was born five centuries before Christ, but was a monotheist considered to be the wisest man of all time. There was another Xanthippe who was born in the first century and whose character was quite the opposite of the wife of the ancient sage who taught Plato and other philosophers. Had the great Socrates been born after the Savior and been married to the first-century Xanthippe, there is no doubt that they would have formed a team in the work of the Lord second to none. The firstcentury Xanthippe, who has come down to us as a saint, was not married to a wise old Greek, but was the wife of a Spanish nobleman by the name of Pro-vus. It has been assumed that she was converted to Christianity by no less a figure than St. Paul himself, whose extensive travels are known to have taken him to Spain and beyond in his missionary work. This is indicated in his Epistle to the Romans which reads, When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain. And I am sure that when I come unto you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing of the Gospel of Christ (Rom. 15:28). According to church historians, the magnificent St. Paul did visit Spain and in the course of his mission was a guest of Provus and his wife Xanthippe. In a remarkable coincidence, while Xanthippe was learning about Jesus Christ from the greatest apostle of them all, her sister Polyxene was becoming a Christian hundreds of miles away through listening to the firstcalled to Jesus Christ, the eminent disciple Andrew. The circumstance of each sister s encounter with Christianity was quite different, but happily the end results were the same. While Xanthippe lived in comfort, her sister suffered a fate that seemed to hold in store nothing but misery and degradation. Abducted by a pair of terrorists, the hapless Polyxene was sold into slavery and was spirited away to Greece to serve as handmaiden to an aristocratic family. Whether by divine design or by sheer fortuity, the captive was never to know debasement or ignominious slave labor. Except for the traumatic experience of having been snatched from her home to find herself far from her native land and in the house of strangers, Polyxene suffered no ill effects. It is not known how she managed it, but she regained her freedom and eventually became a Christian some weeks later after hearing the words of St. Andrew and she made her way back to Spain. The reunion was one of double rejoicing, for not only had the family been reunited, but they were as one in their commitment to Jesus Christ. The two sisters became apostles of the Christian faith with the dedication and zeal that made them as respected and recognized servants of the Lord as any of their male counterparts. Serving with St. Paul until he left Spain for other territories, the two sisters carried on the mission for Christ into every corner of the Iberian peninsula, received warmly wherever they went not only for their family roots, but for their earnestness as well. The affinity they were able to establish with their fellow countrymen was augmented with a knowledge of the customs and basic language of what was to become one of the staunchest of European Christian nations. Polyxene won the hearts of her listeners in recounting the trying times she had experienced at the hands of kidnappers, only to find Christ in the ancient land of Greece. The discovery of Christ could have come at home, much as it had come to her sister, but there was an added meaning to the trials she was put through, and her dedication was in no small way attributable to her deliverance through Jesus Christ. Xanthippe, meanwhile, had diverted much of her share of the estate of her husband to the various charities for the poor, and on his death she gave the balance to the church. The two sisters lived in piety and poverty, serv-ing the Lord all of their days. Their feastday is observed on September 23 in the Orthodox Church.
