1 THE SOURCE August 2015 Issue #8-15 HOLY TRINIT RINITY GREE REEK ORTHODO RTHODOX CATHEDRA THEDRAL CAMP HILL ILL,, PA How to Prepare and Honor the Virgin Mary It is well known to all that the Church has initiated the first two weeks of the month of August as a period of fasting and prayer, honoring and addressing the Mother of God on the feast day of her falling asleep. This period of the two weeks we call time of preparation to celebrate; time of anticipation; time of sacrifice out of love and honor for the Mother of God. It happens to us the same as when we hear that a beloved acquaintance of ours will visit with us; we are happy and concerned to prepare ourselves to welcome and to make his stay an enjoyable one. In the same manner, when we honor the Falling Asleep of the Mother of God, we need preparation to reach the festivity and to honor her appropriately.. In this process of preparation our model is the Virgin Mary. When we look to the Mother of God and her life before the Annunciation and Conception, we find the ideal and sincere preparation that she had offered totally dedicating Herself to the Lord. Her faithful life to the Lord, Who was the center of her concern, made her the brightest and guiding example for us. Her virginity, Her purity in thoughts, words and deeds, her simplicity, her concern for the Word of God, her prayer life, her fasting, her growing up in the holy Temple of Worship, resulted in a perfect preparation for the Incarnation and Birth of Christ. With the Grace of God, the Virgin Mary through her preparation proved the love, the dedication and faithfulness to her Lord. Also her steadfastness on the Holy Will of God indicates her will to have her life open to God and only God. Also there is another aspect in her life that is observed and totally depended on her preparation and firm faithful life. The victory over the passions and weaknesses which would appear and would grow within her and consequently would stop her in becoming the Mother of God and the Mother of us all. A strong, faithful will; a burning heart filled with love towards God is a result of a sincere and genuine preparation. It takes knowledge, discipline and practice to experience spiritual growing. We cannot develop a strong and faithful life if we don t care to prepare ourselves. We cannot celebrate the feast day of the Dormition of the Mother of God without repentance, fasting, prayer and concern for a faithful life. We cannot experience the coming of Christ when we approach to receive Holy Communion if we have not prepared properly ourselves. We cannot fight our passions and weaknesses if we do not want to pay attention to the reasons that stir up our passions as Christ describes on the Sermon on the Mount. If I spend most of my free time in watching harmful and time consuming programs and sites on TV, iphones, ipads, ipods or in going out to movies, clubs, parties, etc.., to organize a well-accepted social life, while in the meantime I expect to grow spiritually; I AM WRONG. 2 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2015 Page 2 I cannot improve spiritually if I don t have the correct priorities in my life, love for God which is expressed by certain things that appear in my daily life such as prayer, studying the Bible, reading the lives/biographies of the Saints and other spiritual books, talking and thinking on different issues and aspects of my life to develop on Christ s expectations, having a spiritual Father for guidance, confession and spiritual discipline. Today s preparation builds tomorrow s shining future of spiritual success. Let us strive to develop a most careful preparation to honor the Dormition of the Mother of God! Sometimes we make a mistake with our society s secularistic mentality. We honor the Mother of God and we honor the worldly way of our society, as well. Let us reflect on the following story/example. In the Old Testament we read that the Philistines conquered the Israelites and captured many of them. The Philistines kept the most valuable article the Israelites had The Ark of God which they brought along with them to their city, Ashdod, and there they were honoring and worshipping it. Though, that invaluable treasure did not benefit them instead the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them ; God s wrath came against them and death was killing them with a miserable famine and misfortune which made them suffer. What was the reason? Well, during the time they were honoring the Ark of God at the same time they also were honoring the idol, Dagon. We honor the Virgin Mary with a faithful life to the Lord, with prayers, hymns, fasts, and almsgiving. This is proper and acceptable before the Lord. Though we have to avoid a Philistinian mentality by not worshipping but by fighting the idols which are our passions, our sins and the evil within us and around us. Let us prepare ourselves properly. Let us practice spiritual alertness in our life time to honor our Lord, the Virgin Mary, the Saints and our sacred faith. Let us stay honest, serious, simple, steadfast and sensitive with the Holy will of our Lord. Amen. εκαπανταύγουστο Ευλαβείς Χριστιανοί, Από πρώτης Αυγούστου εισερχόµαστε είς τήν Εκκλησιαστική περίοδο που την ονοµάζουµε «τό εκαπεντύγουστο». Αυτή η χρονική περίοδος έχει ιδιαίτερη ευλογία από τον Θεόν. Υπάρχει η νηστεία, υπάρχουν κάθε εσπέρας οι Παρακλήσεις στήν Μητέρα τού Θεού καί Μητέρα τών Χριστιανών καί εντείνεται γιά τίς ερχόµενες ηµέρες ο πνευµατικός αγώνας τών Χριστιανών. Είµεθα σέ προετοιµασία διά τόν εορτασµό τής Κοιµήσεως τής Θεοτόκου. Είς τόν Ναόν µας στο τέλος τής λατρείας θα ακούγονται σύντοµες σκέψεις καί θα γίνονται σχόλια πού θα αναφέρονται είς τό πρόσωπον της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου καί τού πνευµατικού αγώνος τού Χριστιανού. Ελπίζοµε νά σάς βλέποµε στήν Εκκλησία, άν ηµπορείτε, καθηµερινώς. Θά ακολουθήσουν ορισµένες σκέψεις πού αφορούν τόν αόρατο πόλεµο καί τόν πνευµατικό καταρτισµό τού Χριστιανού. Από τήν Μικράν Παράκληση πού ψάλλεται κάθε άλλη ηµέρα καί από τό πρώτο τροπάριο λαµβάνουµε τήν φράση-προσευχή: «Πολλοίς συνεχόµενος πειρασµοίς, προς Σέ καταφεύγω σωτηρίαν επιζητών.» Ζητούµε τήν προστασία τής Παναγίας από τούς πειρασµούς. Αλλά θά ρωτήσουµε τί είναι πειρασµός; Καί απαντούµε ότι είναι κάθε τι πού προσπαθεί να µάς ρίξη στήν αµαρτία καί νά µάς αποµακρύνει από τόν Θεό. Κάθε τι πού θέλει νά κάνει ανενέργητη τήν πίστη καί νά αφαιρέσει τήν υπακοή

3 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2015 Page 3 µας καί αφοσίωσή µας από τόν Κύριό µας καί από τόν θείον Του Νόµο. Κάθε τι πού µάς προκαλεί νά αµαρτήσουµε καί νά ξεφύγουµε από τό θέληµα τού Θεού. Μερικά από αυτά είναι τά ακόλουθα. Κακά παραδείγµατα πού µάς παρακινούν καί θέλουν νά µάς παρασύρουν στό κακό. Θεάµατα διεγερτικά, άσεµνα, γυµνά, ακατάλληλα. Οικονοµικές στενοχώριες ή επαγγελµατικές αποτυχίες πού δοκιµάζουν τήν σταθερότητα στίς Χριστιανικές µας αρχές. ιώξεις καί επικρίσεις γιά τήν τήρηση καθηκόντων. Ειρωνείες καί χλευασµοί διά τήν θρησκευτικότητα καί ηθικότητά µας. Επί πλέον πρέπει κανείς νά σκεφθή ότι ο πονηρός διάβολος δηµιουργεί πολλούς πειρασµούς καί εσωτερικούς καί εξωτερικούς. Στούς εσωτερικούς πειρασµούς µπορούµε νά περιλάβουµε απιστίαν, απελπισία, υπερηφάνεια, αµετανοησία, δικαιολογία αµαρτιών µας, πονηρές επιθυµίες κ.ο.κ. Στούς εξωτερικούς τοποθετούµε αυτά τά παραδείγµατα πού αναφέραµε ενωρίτερο καί πού συνήθως προέρχονται από τούς ανθρώπους. Μέ τούς εξωτερικούς πειρασµούς κάµπτεται η εµπιστοσύνη µας στήν Πρόνοια, στήν φροντίδα τού Κυρίου µας. Επίσης πειρασµούς δεχόµαστε καί από τόν µόνιµο εχθρό µας τόν ιάβολο ο οποίος υποκινεί καί τούς εξωτερικούς καί τούς εσωτερικούς πειρασµούς ενώ ταυτόχρονα έχει ιδρύσει στόν κόσµο αυτό µεθόδους γιά νά παίρνει τόν άνθρωπο από τήν αγκάλη τού Θεού όπως όνειρα, µαντείες, µαγείες, πνευµατισµόν κ.λ.π. Είναι δέ οι πειρασµοί τόσοι πολλοί ώστε ο άνθρωπος νά αισθάνεται ότι είναι «πάντοθεν πολεµούµενος» όπως λέγωµε είς τήν Παράκληση. Εάν ανατρέξωµε είς τήν Αγίαν Γραφήν θά βρούµε τό πώς αντιµετωπίζονται οι πειρασµοί. Θά αναφέροµε γιά παράδειγµα τρία βοηθητικά χωρία. Ο Αγιος Ιάκωβος (Ιακ. 1:2) αναφέρει «πάσαν χαράν ηγήσασθε, αδελφοί µου, όταν πειρασµοίς περιπέσητε ποικίλοις»... Εδώ φαίνεται ότι οι πειρασµοί συντελούν νά φανή η πίστις καί η εναντίον τους ανδρεία τής ψυχής καί γι αυτό φέρνει «πάσαν χαράν». Επίσης ο Απ. Παύλος (Α Κορινθ. 10:13) µάς βεβαιώνει «ούκ εάσει ηµάς πειρασθήναι υπέρ ό δύνασθε, αλλά ποιήσει σύν τώ πειρασµώ καί τήν έκβασιν, τού δύνασθαι υµάς υπενεγκείν.» Ο Κύριός µας δεν µας αφήνει νά δοκιµασθούµε πάνω από τίς δυνάµεις µας. Στήν πρός Εβραίους Επιστολήν (Εβρ. 2:18, 4:15) διαπιστώνοµε τήν βοήθεια πού µάς προσφέρεται από τόν Θεό στούς περασµούς «Ούκ έχοµε αρχιερέα µή δυνάµενον συµπαθήσαι ταίς ασθενείας ηµών». Ενώ λοιπόν αγωνιζόµαστε εναντίον τών πειρασµών τότε έρχεται συνεργός καί ο Κύριος «εν ώ πέπονθεν αυτός πειρασθείς, δύναται τοίς πειραζοµένοις βοηθήσαι». Ελπίζοµε, λοιπον, είς τήν βοήθεια τού Κυρίου πού θά πρέπει πάντα µέ τήν προσευχή µας νά ζητούµε διά τών πρεσβείων τής Κυρίας Θεοτόκου ώστε νά αγωνιζόµαστε καί να ευρίσκοµε λύτρωση από τους πειρασµούς καί σωτηρία τών ψυχών µας. Αδελφοί µου, Καλό εκαπενταύγουστο! Καί µέ τήν κατάλληλη προετοιµασία νηστείας, µετανοίας, εξοµολογήσεως, παρακλήσεων καί προσευχών άς εορτάσωµεν τήν Ιεράν Κοίµησιν τής Κυρίας Θεοτόκου αξίως. Αµήν. Children will need assistance so that they do not take too many pieces, and so they are not careless in handling the bread. After returning to your seat, you may eat the holy bread as you say the prayers after Holy Communion silently while others are communing.

6 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2015 Page 6 Dear Parishioners: A NOTE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL As Fr. Michael becomes more ingrained and established as our new Proistamenos, we are starting to enjoy a new normal. Church is fuller, stewardship is up, and there is a general feeling of peace. However, I use this opportunity to challenge us to not just settle for this new normal and instead rise to the next level as a community. Our goal should not be to get things back to the way they used to be but to achieve an enhanced future. As our summer wraps up and we look forward to the new ecclesiastical year, commit yourself to the following: 1. Growing in your faith through reading, prayer, fasting 2. Attending church as regularly as you can, on-time 3. Increasing your financial stewardship pledge (keeping in mind that in Summertime attendance is lower) 4. Making an additional one-time contribution to help with the 2015 budget shortfall 5. Getting involved in a project or ministry 6. Sharing the love of Holy Trinity by bringing someone has drifted away from the faith back to Church. I pray you have a spiritually fulfilling Dekapentavgoustos. Yours in Christ, George J. 7 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2015 Page 7 VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS In order to be eligible to vote in the Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office. Please remember that if you do not turn in a pledge card, you are NOT eligible to vote in the Fall elections for Parish Council, NOR are you able to run as a candidate. August 31, 2015 is the deadline to submit your stewardship pledge card. PARISH ASSEMBLY ANNOUNCEMENT AUGUST 30, 2015 Please note that a Parish Assembly will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2015, after the Divine Liturgy, with the following tentative agenda: 1. Sunday School will begin September 13 th. Vacation Church School Vacation Church School was held during the week of June 15 th -19 th. The theme was, Childhood and Living with Jesus in Nazareth. The program was done by interactive teaching involving older youth with the younger children. The older students dressed and acted out the following events in Christ s life: The Annunciation, Mary s visit to Elizabeth, Nativity of Jesus, Blessing by St. Simeon in the Temple, 40 day blessing for Orthodox babies, King Herod s decree, Angel coming to Joseph in a dream to depart and go to Egypt, Holy Family return to Nazareth and not Bethlehem, Jesus visit to the Temple in Jerusalem at age 12, The 10 Commandments (review), Epiphany and Baptism, choosing Disciples (the beginning), and the Wedding of Canna which was our culminating activity. The parents prepared the wedding table with food items you may have experienced in the time of Jesus. The children dressed in costumes they made from pillow cases and wore sandals or bare feet. The older students dressed in prepared costumes as guests, bride, groom, Mary, a few disciples of Jesus and Jesus (portrayed by Fr. Michael). The lesson of Jesus first miracle was an enjoyable learning experience for all (young and old).

10 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2015 Page 10 We greatly thank the older youth for volunteering and helping to make the VCS experience so real by acting out our lessons and playing enjoyable games. We also want to thank the adults that prepared our meals, cleaned up, and were always there for support. Lastly the creative and patient teachers who further developed our themes/lessons in the class room with follow up, discussion and craft and music. Many thanks to their teachers for their hard work and dedication to our dancers. Our teachers were Bobby Matangos and Ellie Lamnatos (Seniors), Dede Havelos and Kalliopi Matangos (Juniors) and Chrissa Katsifis and Billy Mallios (Beg/Intermediate). Thank you also to our parents who worked so hard on fundraising this year. Thanks to their efforts we were able to attend the Metropolis Dance Festival in November and were able to purchase new costumes for some of our Senior Boys. Michael and Presvytera Varvarelis to Holy Trinity and look forward to working together. The National Philoptochos has approved our new board members. We would like to extend a thank you to our two-outgoing board members who have served our Philoptochos for over 50 years. They are Ann Megoulas and Mary Touloumes they will remain in the capacity of Honorary Board Members. We d like to add special thanks for their many contributions.to Mrs. Megoulas for the beautiful baby blankets and shawls she has made for our new born and for the ill in hospitals and homes, and to Mrs. Touloumes for her many hours of taking care of coffee hour and helping prepare the monthly Source newsletter. Both have been supportive members and are an example to all of us of dedicated service. We pray that God grant them many years of good health as they continue to serve. Michael: I would like to extend my deepest gratitude first and foremost to the Holy Trinity Cathedral Parish Council, to our Chanters, to our Choir, and also members of the Philoptochos, Sunday School, Greek School, Neohoriton Association, Evrytanian Association, Committees, Ministries, other groups in our Community, Youth and Adults, Altar Boys other individuals and the members of the Community that I have met so far and who have embraced me and my Presvytera with all your love and support. I have already experienced how beautiful, hospitable, generous, kind, thoughtful and amazing persons that you are. You are good faithful of the Lord. I love the fact that you are coming to the Church on Sundays during the Summer months. This provides me the assurance of a faithful to the Lord Community. Thank you for making me feel at home and making also my Presvytera feel welcome. I am here to minister and serve you. My request is that I want to get to know you first, and then to be able to support you and care for your spiritual needs or other concerns that you may have. I would love to get to know everyone in the Parish as soon as this can be attained. As some of you already have done please give me a call, even invite me to come when possible and visit you at your home and thus to get to know your family. Shared your most valuable of all resources with us in order that we may have yet another successful Festival. 2. Volunteered during the 3 days of the Festival. 3. Spent countless hours preparing all of our pastries, baked goods, dinners and food. 4. Helped clean up the eventual messes from baking, cooking and of course, hosting our annual Festival. 5. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance.
