6 Acknowledgments The idea for this project grew out of work the authors did with support from Miami University's Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program and the Dean s Scholar Program of the College of Arts and Science. The technical aspects of this project were made possible through the invaluable advice and support of Bill Hayes, Christopher Kuo, and Daniel Meyers. Parts of the text were improved by the help of intermediate Greek students at Miami who tested an earlier version. They were Nicholas Arlington, Brian Bitzer, Michael Clemmer, Elisabeth Colucci, Christopher Dobbs, Kristie Fernberg, Tyler Gau, Stephanie Goldkopf, Jordan Gulley, Alexander Heck, Amanda Holmes, Victoria Hudson, Dylan Ketchum, Adrian Kimmett, Stephanie Krause, Paul Levitt, Brent Maynard, Rebecca Riffle, Katherine Roach, Nathan Roser, Derek Rumpler, Nathan Schaad, Katie Spaulding, and Simone Waller. The following identified errors in an earlier edition: Christopher Francese, Mark Lightman, Jesse Lundquist, Sean Manning, Louise Pratt, and Robert Regan. The authors also profited from advice and help on the POD process from Geoffrey Steadman. All responsibility for errors, however, rests with the authors themselves. v

8 Introduction The aim of this book is to make Lucian's A True Story accessible to intermediate students of Ancient Greek. The running vocabulary and commentary are meant to provide everything necessary to read each page. The commentary is almost exclusively grammatical, explaining subordinate clauses, conditions etc., and explaining unusual verb forms. The page by page vocabularies gloss all but the most common words. We have endeavored to make these glossaries as useful as possible without becoming fulsome. A glossary of all words occurring three or more times in the text can be found as an appendix in the back, but it is our hope that most readers will not need to use this appendix often. Brief summaries of a number of grammatical and morphological topics are interspersed through the text as well, and there is a list of verbs used by Lucian that have unusual forms in an appendix. The principal parts of those verbs are given there rather than in the glossaries. We have provided brief explanations of allusions and proper names, but the commentary by Aristoula Georgiadou and David H.J. Larmour (Lucian's Science Fiction Novel, True Histories: Interpretation and Commentary. Leiden: Brill, 1998) can be consulted for more details on the literary character of the work, and those authors include a generous bibliography of critical studies of Lucian. Lucian's A True Story is an ideal text for intermediate readers. Its breathless narrative does not involve many complex sentences or constructions; there is some unusual vocabulary and a few departures from Attic Greek, but for the most part it is a straightforward narrative that is fun and interesting. Lucian of Samosata is one of antiquity's cleverest authors. Nearly everything we know about him is derived from his works, several of which have autobiographical material that is unable to be confirmed by other sources. He claims to have been trained in rhetoric and to be one of the many traveling professional speakers, the sophists of the Roman empire, who entertained audiences with amusing lectures on topics of all sorts. He is famous for his satirical sketches that often focus on hypocrisy and pedantry. In A True Story, he parodies accounts of fanciful adventures and travel to incredible places by authors such as Ctesias and Iambulus. The story's combination of mockery and learning makes it an excellent example of the Greek literature of the imperial period. The climax of the story is the visit to the Island of the Blessed, where many major figures from Greek literary history are presented with a mixture of humor and pride. In addition the conspicuous absence of any reference to the Roman world in the work--the journey begins at the western vii

9 margin of the Mediterranean and never returns--represents one frequent strategy of works of the so-called "second sophistic," which emphasized the importance of Greek learning (paideia) in a world dominated by Roman political power. A True Story is of course aimed at a readership of learned men (pepaideumenoi), who would recognize the many humorous allusions to the Greek cultural tradition, especially the Odyssey. The introductory paragraphs state that A True Story is meant to be a relaxation as a respite from more serious work, a respite that is clever and amusing in part because it makes hinting reference (ainissomai) to archaic poetry and history. Georgiadou and Larmour take the position that a more serious allegory about truth and experience can be deduced from this ainigma. Perhaps they are right, but A True Story has been admired for centuries as a lot of fun: the first example of science fiction, a utopian fantasy, and a gentle mockery of some of the most famous figures in the classical tradition. The Greek text contained in this volume is based on the Loeb edition of Lucian, first published in 1921 and now in the public domain. This text was scanned in 2003 and has appeared on several web pages. We have corrected as many of the inevitable errors introduced by the scanning process as we could find, and also made a few minor changes to the Loeb text itself. This is not a scholarly edition; for that the reader is referred to the OCT edited by M. D. Macleod. Keith Sidwell includes some selections from A True Story in his intermediate reader, Lucian: Selections (Bristol: Bristol Classical Press, 1986). The bowdlerized version of C. S. Jerram (1879) with grammatical notes has been reprinted as Luciani Vera Historia (Wauconda: Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 1990). Selections of some other dialogues by Lucian have been presented with extensive literary commentary by Neil Hopkinson in the Cambridge Greek and Latin series (Lucian: A Selection. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2008). viii

Hellenism and Empire. Oxford: Oxford University Press, Whitmarsh, Tim. Greek Literature and the Roman Empire: the Politics of Imitation. Oxford: Oxford University Press, How to use this book: The presentation assumes the reader has a basic acquaintance with Greek grammar. Generally, particles have not been included in the page-bypage glossaries, along with other common nouns and adjectives. If necessary, all of these words can be found in the glossary at the end. Verbs, being a special problem in Greek, have been treated more fully. A simple and more generic dictionary entry is given in the glossary on each page, with a more specific meaning provided in the commentary below if necessary. We have also included a list of verbs with unusual forms and their principal parts as an appendix, which should be useful in identifying the dictionary form of verbs. Brief discussions of the morphology of some special cases (e.g., -μι verbs) are also interspersed throughout the text. A good strategy for attacking a text like this is to read a section of the Greek to get as much out of it as possible, then to look at the glossary below for unrecognized vocabulary items, and lastly to consult the commentary. The fuller glossary at the end of the book can be a last resort. ix

Note the different meanings of the word αὐτὸς: 1. Without the definite article a. The nominative forms of the word always are intensive (= Latin ipse): αὐτὸς: he himself, αὐτοί, they themselves; ἃ μήτε αὐτὸς εἶδεν: which he himself never saw. b. The other cases of the word are the unemphatic third person pronouns: him, them, etc. παρ αὐτοῖς: around them. 2. With the definite article a. In predicative position, it is also intensive (= Latin ipse): τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτόν: the man himself. b. in attributive position or with no noun, it means the same : τὸν αὐτόν ἄνδρα: the same man; πολλοὶ δὲ καὶ ἄλλοι τὰ αὐτα: and many others do the same things. 5
