St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is selfcondemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. 4

ΤΗΕ GOSPEL The Gospel of Luke 8:5-15 The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." 5

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

PRAYERS BEFORE HOLY COMMUNION I believe, Lord, and I confess, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, Who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. Moreover, I believe that this is Your immaculate Body, and that this is Your precious Blood. Wherefore, I pray to You: have mercy on me, and forgive me my transgressions, those voluntary and involuntary, those in word, those in deed, those in knowledge and those in ignorance; and make me worthy to partake of Your immaculate Mysteries without condemnation, for the remission of sins and life everlasting. Amen. Behold, I approach for divine Communion; Creator, burn me not as I partake; For You are Fire, which burns the unworthy. But, rather, cleanse me from every impurity. Of Your Mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Your enemies; nor will I give You a kiss, as did Judas, but like the thief I confess You: Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom! Be awe-stricken, O man, beholding the deifying Blood; For it is a lighted Coal that burns the unworthy. The divine Body both deifies and nourishes me; It deifies the spirit, and wondrously nourishes the mind. You have smitten me with yearning, O Christ, and by Your divine zeal You have changed me; but burn away my sins with immaterial Fire, and make me worthy to be filled with delight in You; that, leaping for joy, O good One, I may magnify Your two comings. Into the brilliant company of Your saints, how shall I the unworthy enter? For if I dare to enter into the bridal chamber, my garment betrays me, for it is not a wedding garment, and I shall be bound and cast out by the Angels; Lord, cleanse my soul of pollution, and save me, for You love mankind. Master, Who loves mankind, Lord Jesus Christ my God, do not let these Holy Things be to me for judgment because of my unworthiness, but rather may they be for the purification and sanctification of soul and body, and as a pledge of the life and Kingdom to come. For it is good for me to cleave to God, to put my hope of salvation in the Lord. Of Your Mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Your enemies; nor will I give You a kiss, as did Judas, but like the thief I confess You: Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom! Remember me, Master, when You come into Your Kingdom! Remember me, Holy One, when You come into Your Kingdom! 7

SAINTS AND FEASTS Symeon the New Theologian October 12th Saint Symeon became a monk of the Studite Monastery as a young man, under the guidance of the elder Symeon the Pious. Afterwards he struggled at the Monastery of Saint Mamas in Constantinople, of which he became abbot. After enduring many trials and afflictions in his life of piety, he reposed in Marvelling at the heights of prayer and holiness to which he attained, and the loftiness of the teachings of his life and writings, the church calls him "the New Theologian." Only to two others, John the Evangelist and Gregory, Patriarch of Constantinople, has the church given the name "Theologian." Saint Symeon reposed on March 12, but since this always falls in the Great Fast, his feast is kept today. Cosmas the Hagiopolite October 14th Saint Cosmas was from the Holy City, Jerusalem, and was a contemporary and peer of Saint John of Damascus (Dec. 4), with whom also he was reared when, because of his orphanhood he was adopted by Sergius, Saint John's father, and with whom he had the same instructor. About the year 743, he was elected Bishop of Maiuma, a coastal city of Palestine, aforetime under the jurisdiction of Gaza, with the name Port Gaza. During the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, it became a separate township and at that time was renamed Constantia, after Constantine, the son of the Emperor (see Sozomen, Eccl. Hist., V:3). Cosmas became an excellent hymnographer, from whence he is called "the Composer and Melodist," Among his many compositions are the Canon of the Cross (Sept. 14) and the Canon for the Nativity of Christ, "Christ is born, give ye glory." Longinos the Centurion October 16th This Martyr was in the service of Pontius Pilate at the time of Christ our Saviour's Passion. While standing guard at the Cross and beholding the earthquake and all that came to pass, he cried out with fear, "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matt. 27:54). After the Resurrection, he forsook the military and departed for Cappadocia, his homeland, where he preached Christ. By the agency of Pontius Pilate, Tiberius Caesar had him arrested and beheaded. 8

by Fr. Ted The Greatest Form of Love: To Love One s Enemies The highest expression of love, and the surest criterion of Christian truth, is love of enemies, says the Saint [Silouan the Athonite]. True love cannot suffer a single soul to perish. For Christ there are no enemies, for the very word implies rejection. They are brothers and sisters who need our love and prayers. Christ prayed for those who crucified Him. Saint Stephen the First Martyr prayed for those who stoned him. So we must urge ourselves to love those who revile or injure us. If we can not love, at least let us not revile. A person who reviles or despises those who are against him, brings spiritual injury to himself and shows that an evil spirit is working in him. But divine love cannot be attained by human beings without divine grace. We cannot love our enemies without having the Holy Spirit. When we humble ourselves and pray for those who affront us, God works the impossible things in the heart. On one occasion Silouan states that the soul is so wounded by divine loves that it loses it wits. Even devils can rouse its pity because they were once God s creatures now fallen from the good. (Theodore G. Stylianopoulos, The Way of Christ: Gospel, Spiritual Life and Renewal in Orthodoxy, pp ) 13

By Jim Liebelt Perspective I know your afflictions and your poverty yet you are rich! Revelation 2:9 It s possible to confuse material possessions with God s blessings. It s an important lesson to learn that God s blessings aren t limited to those who have. In fact, it s possible that possessions can actually become an obstacle to recognizing God s goodness. So much has to do with perspective. Here is a story to remind us of how one s point of view can make a big difference! One day, the father of a very wealthy family sent his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On the return from their trip, the father asked his son, How was the trip? It was great, Dad. Did you see how poor people live? the father asked. Oh yeah, said the son. So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip? asked the father. The son answered, I saw that we have one dog, and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden, and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on, and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them. The boy s Isn t perspective a wonderful thing? It makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don t have. On more than one occasion, I ve noted to my wife that I never really knew how poor I was growing up. But, it didn t prevent me from having a wonderful childhood. Our family had everything we really needed. Now, while I have more stuff than I did growing up, I ve also learned that those things don t really matter much in the big scheme of things. What really counts is faith, family, and relationships. Today, regardless of what you have or don t have in terms of possessions, remember the lesson of perspective. Give thanks for the wonderful blessings God has given you: the treasures that money cannot buy and no one can ever take from you. GOING DEEPER: 1. Make a list of God s blessings in your life. 2. Spend time in prayer thanking God for the items that make up your list. FURTHER READING: Philippians 4:12; Hebrews 13:5 14

STEWARDSHIP By Fr. Aris Metrakos IS YOUR PARISH A CRUISE SHIP OR BATTLESHIP? Some leaders of our parish spent a couple of hours with professional church consultant Rev. Dr. Roy King. Roy (as he likes to be called) put parish-based ministry into crystal clear focus. He told us that 85% of all churches are cruise ships that need to become battleships. Cruise ships and battleships. What could be more simple and clear? Think about what happens on a cruise ship. We don't do any work. Someone takes care of every need. Every event (except for lifeboat training) is optional. We have no responsibilities and no accountability. Isn't this the way most people approach Church? Developing and executing services and programs is someone else's job. We go to services once or twice a year and still call ourselves "members." All work falls under the job description of the paid staff or core volunteers so we have no responsibilities. Even our duty to support the Church is mitigated through "stewardship," which often means: "So what if I pledge $52 per year, that's between me and the Almighty!" Then there's the battleship. The warship has a life or death mission. Every member of the crew has a job that must be executed at the top of his ability. Everyone must work together because they depend on one another for the success of the mission and mutual survival. A healthy parish must see itself as a battleship. The mission of the Church is life and death. We are called to bring the Gospel to the world and to provide for those in need. No other vocation is as critical or crucial. Each member of the "crew" has a divine calling to define and fill his particular niche in the life of the parish. And when members do not work together, they jeopardize both the work of the Church and their salvation. Anyone who has spent time aboard a cruise ship and battleship knows that the way of life onboard the two vessels are polar opposites. Cruise ship passengers are relaxed, tanned, and well-fed. Battleship sailors are sleep deprived, grungy, and edgy. No one in his right mind would vacation on a battleship. But the life of the Church isn't a vacation. It's life and death combat with the evil one. And just like the cruise ship passenger that can't fit into his wardrobe after three nights and four days of stuffing his face, "members" of cruise ship churches are unfit for spiritual warfare. Perhaps this is why so many parishes are afloat but bloated. There are few things as satisfying as being part of a focused, disciplined, hard-working team that knows its mission, understands and fulfills its responsibilities, is well-trained, and strives constantly to improve its knowledge and skills. God is calling us to find our place among the crew of a spiritual battleship. 20

STEWARDSHIP YOU CANNOT TEACH ADULTS NEW THINGS. By Bill Marianes The title of this article comes from Greek philosopher Socrates. I think he got it right in his entire statement which was: You cannot teach adults new things. You can merely create the environment in which they discover the truth for themselves. This belief is the basis of the Socratic method used by law schools and other educators to teach by asking questions and helping people learn to think and discern the truth. Are you ready to discover the truth for yourself? Each of my Igniting the Flame of True Christian Stewardship programs begins with Socrates words and then asks two key questions. Question #1: Do you believe in John 3:16? In John 3:16 we learn that For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not parish but have everlasting life. Let s focus a little on that last part. Do you believe in the resurrection? Do you believe in the possibility of Heaven or everlasting life? Do you believe there is anything after this life? These are fair questions because in his book, American Grace, Robert Putnam reports on the results of a nationwide survey that concluded that while approximately 80% of Americans are absolutely sure there is a God, only 60% are absolutely sure that there is a heaven and only 52% have this level of certainty about life after death. What do you believe? I am pleased to report that 100% of the attendees at all of my Parish stewardship programs raise their hands and testify to believing in the resurrection, the possibility of Heaven and the promise of John 3:16. This leads us to our second question. Question # 2: Are you ready? If this were the exact moment when you were called to meet your Maker, is the state of your faith and the body of your works sufficient to assure you of salvation for all of eternity? If they are, congratulations, you are unique and ready. But if you are like most of us, there is more you can and should do. So what keeps us from going all in and better using our gifts for God s greater glory and our salvation? Stewardship is what we do with the gifts God gave us. He didn t have to give us any, or many, gifts. So did you ever wonder why your Father blessed you with all of the incredible talents, abilities and resources He has entrusted uniquely to you? And are you doing the best you can with them? If not, why not? When we are asked to reconsider our stewardship commitments, we sometimes excuse our own conduct (or lack thereof) by sitting in judgment of our perception of the relative lack of contributions of others. But when our judgment day comes, won t we stand alone? Whether we 21

Stewardship (cont. from page 21) did more or less than our brother or sister probably won t really matter. It s about what we do with the gifts we were given. It s personal. Being less bad than someone else does not make us good. One of my priests, Father Barnabas (www.orthodoxonpurpose.com, delivered an inspiring sermon sharing one of the most critical lessons he learned from his pastoral counseling training. He informed us that most people already know the right thing to do. They know when they are doing the right thing and when they are not doing enough. The job of the counselor/ advisor/mentor is merely to help us actually admit and acknowledge what we already know. Sounds like Socrates actually had it right. So is your stewardship contribution of your time, talent, treasurers and tithes to your Parish/ Metropolis/Archdiocese the best you can do given the gifts you have been given? What was the first answer that came to your mind? If your personal salvation for all of eternity depended on the truth of this answer, what would your answer be? In his book, The Second Brain, Scientist Dr. Michael Gershon, explained: A hundred million neurotransmitters line the length of the gut, approximately the same number that is found in the brain. So when someone asks you: What does your gut say? or advises you to Follow your gut they are actually giving you sound scientific advice. Our Father has given us a second brain to help us discover the truth for ourselves. So what does your gut say right now? Is there anything more you can do, or give, for your Parish/ Metropolis/Archdiocese and for your salvation? The icon of Pentecost inspires us to reflect on our personal ministry. To be a part of Christ s holy commission and help bring His word and our faith to ourselves and others through the exercise of our own unique stewardship calling can be a noble and compelling life objective for each of us. Eternity is an awfully long time. It is far longer then the relatively short time we will spend on this orb we call earth. So if what we do with God s gifts to us here helps determine where we will spend the rest of eternity, our stewardship stakes in our daily lives just got a lot higher. This brings us back to question #2. Are you ready? Is the state of your faith and your body of works sufficient to assure you of the right result on judgment day? As John 3:16 teaches, our belief in our Lord is a critical part of our faith journey. So too is our stewardship over the talents God has given us. Ask yourself the right questions, and you will discover the truth for yourself. Then go do something more today (and for all the tomorrows you are given) in gratitude for Christ s redeeming love and to help prepare your soul for salvation! May God bless you as you pursue your own unique stewardship calling. Stay on The Path and enjoy the journey. (SOTPAETJ) 22

St. Kosmas Aitolos Bookstore BOOKSTORE HOURS: Monday thru Friday 10am-4pm The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios By: Dionysios Farasiotis This powerful memoir tells the story of a Greek youth who, out of a desire to know the truth empirically, began to experiment in yoga, hypnotism, and various occult techniques. Eventually drawn back to the Faith of his forefathers Orthodox Christianity he visited the ancient monastic republic of Mount Athos in his native Greece, where he was brought to a knowledge of the Truth of Jesus Christ by the saintly Elder Paisios ( ). Nevertheless, believing he had only found part of the truth on the Holy Mountain, he chose to give the same opportunity to Hindu yogis that he had given to Elder Paisios and other Orthodox monks. Thus, at the age of twenty-five, he embarked on a trip to India, where he undertook his search in the ashrams of three famous gurus, one of whom was worshipped as a god. His experiences in India, along with his subsequent encounters with Elder Paisios on Mount Athos, are recounted in the present book in vivid detail. Popular in Greece since its first publication there in 2001, The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios is a page-turning narrative of both outward adventures and inward struggles. What stands out most in this book, however, is the radiant image of Elder Paisios, possessed of divine gifts, laboring in prayer for his fellow man, and overflowing with unconditional love. Through this, one sees the uncreated Source of the elder s love and of the author s spiritual transformation: the true God-man Jesus Christ, Who honors man s personal freedom while drawing him, through love, into everlasting union with Himself.
