Born in Thessaloniki, Dr. Kalaitzidis earned a PhD in Byzantine musicology at the University of Athens. He is one of the most distinguished performers and teachers of the oud in the Mediterranean. Paul Macres is a Holy Trinity congregant and choir member! A Minnesota native, Paul has been a member of Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra since He studied at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, where he earned a Professional Studies Certificate in music performance. Paul also holds a master s degree from Rice University and a bachelor s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, both in music. 2 Message from Father George TEN YEARS AFTER Being a newcomer to the Crescent City, I have quickly learned that life is recalled in two unique ways: Before Katrina and After Katrina. Over the past week, there have been television specials, newspaper remembrances, church services, and the sharing of personal stories and accounts of those terrible days beginning with the landfall of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent catastrophic flooding. Those of you, who lived through Katrina, know where and when you evacuated, who you were with, when you returned, and the condition of your homes and belongings. It was such a once in a lifetime encounter that truly changed your world. The way that you look at life will never be the same as it was before Katrina. As Presbytera Harriet and I were storing our household belongings and then moving them into the home that we just purchased here in New Orleans, we were reminded by a number of people that the furniture, clothing, and artifacts from our lives and our twenty-seven years marriage were merely things that could be taken away by an event like Hurricane Katrina. The numerous objects that we as humans collect over the years, whether they are small mementoes or items of great wealth, are merely extra baggage. The devastation left behind and the loss of life after Katrina was horrifying, but the outpouring of love and concern from people across the country and the world was abundant and humbling. In addressing the readiness of the infrastructure, it is easy to cast blame and suggest one person or organization was the real culprit at fault, but often it is unhealthy to look backwards and to dwell on what has been lost. As Christians it is necessary to learn from the past, live in the present, and hope for the future. Through prayer and reflection on our Lord s revelation in Scripture, we can be empowered to be prepared for the hardships in our lives such as the life changing events that were associated with Katrina. But, beyond that we look to the Lord for the hope of His love and blessings in the future. On this tenth anniversary commemoration of Hurricane Katrina, may we reflect on these words and allow our Lord s love, compassion, and mercy strengthen us in our personal prayer life and in our personal spiritual growth so that we may be strong in our vigilance - always being prepared for any evil flung at us by the devil and always being prepared to endure the hardships inflicted by a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I do hope. (Psalm 130:5) GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING A General Assembly will be held next Sunday, September 13, 2015, after church services in the Hellenic Cultural Center. The agenda will include Committee Reports and Metropolis of Atlanta Strategic Planning Presentation by Steven E. Psarellis. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting. All parishioners of our Community, who are Members in Good Standing, are encouraged to check their stewardship status prior to the meeting, if they have questions, by calling the Cathedral office. HYMNOLOGY During the past two years our Sunday School students learned ten (10) new hymns of the Orthodox Liturgy, which they are encouraged to chant during services. Next Sunday, September 13, please join the choir and the youth in chanting ANEITE TON KYRION - PRAISE THE LORD, shortly after Holy Communion. ORDER OF ST. MARKELLA ANNUAL DINNER DANCE The Order of St. Markella of Chios will host its annual Dinner Dance on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at the Hellenic Cultural Center. Music will be provided by Muses Greek Band. Call Maria Anastasiou at or Kosta Frezoulis at for details. PHILOPTOCHOS MEETING SEPTEMBER 12 Philoptochos helps those in need here in our community and beyond, assisting the elderly, the sick, and the poor. It gives to Orthodox missions, IOCC, St. Basil s Academy, local charities, Ozanam Inn, and other places. Philoptochos works to make the lives of others better. Please consider renewing your stewardship or joining Philoptochos and see how you can help! Suggested Annual Stewardship is $35 with $15 going to National Philoptochos projects and $6 going to Metropolis projects. The local group uses the other money, along with fundraisers, to support the good works of the chapter. GARAGE SALE The Garage Sale is a major fundraiser for Philoptochos and is scheduled for September 19 and 20. Thank you for the items that you already donated. If you have more to bring, please place these in the pastry room for pricing. Large items should be brought to the hall the week before the garage sale. To avoid transportation costs, the committee asks that you find a friend with a truck to help deliver your items to the Hellenic Cultural Center. SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Seniors are invited to the next Senior Citizens Luncheon on September 24 at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. Appreciation is extended to Despina and Panagiotis Patselikos for sponsoring the luncheon in memory of his parents, Ermioni and Pantelis Patselikos. Make plans now to attend. SUNDAY SCHOOL AND GREEK SCHOOL UPDATE Parents, be aware that Sunday School and Greek School classes will resume next Sunday, September 13. THE EPISTLE II Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4 BRETHREN, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. THE GOSPEL Matthew 22:2-14 The Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."
