8 Thoughts from our Parish Priest MAKING SUFFERING USEFUL St Paul wrote to the Christians living in Corinth that God comforts us in our sorrow so that we might comfort others in their time of tribulation. In our own personal experience, we can discover the truth in these important words. Out of the painful crucible of our own suffering, we are able to find within us a well-spring of strength that we may never knew we possessed. We acquire a deepened understanding of the human condition, a greater sensitivity and compassion for the sufferings of others, and a heightened ability to share with others our conviction in the sureness of ultimate victory. Victor Frankl, recalling his experience in a German concentration camp wrote in his book Man s Search For Meaning these wonderful words of affirmation: The dawn was gray around us, gray was the sky above, gray the snow in the pale light of dawn, gray the rags in which my fellow prisoners were clad, and gray their faces. I was struggling to find reason for my suffering, my slow dying. In a last violent protest against the hopelessness of imminent death, I sensed my spirit piercing through the enveloping gloom. I felt it transcend that hopeless, meaningless world, and from somewhere I heard a victorious yes in answer to my questions of the existence of ultimate purpose. At that moment, Frankl s profound suffering taught him a lesson equally as profound - that the ladder of hope has nothing to stand on here below; it is held up from above and thus becomes available to all who might reach out to find it. The pain and suffering we experience are unique to our own person, and so are the myriad lessons they teach us. Out of their depths, however, come common treasures which can strengthen our character, sharpen our understanding, and put our priorities in the right order. For each of us, therefore, no suffering is without purpose. God allows us the experience of suffering in the hope that we will then share with others what we have learned, and become a source of blessing and help to them. Let us be open to God s comfort so that in the good time of his choosing, He can then comfort others through His servants. 8

9 Thoughts from our Parish Priest ΚΑΝΟΝΤΑΣ ΤΟΝ ΠΟΝΟ ΧΡΗΣΙΜΟ Ο Άγιος Παύλος έγραψε στους χριστιανούς της Κορίνθου, ότι ο Θεός μας παρηγορεί στην θλίψη μας, ώστε και εμείς να παρηγορήσουμε άλλους στην ώρα της δοκιμασίας τους. Στην προσωπική μας εμπειρία, μπορούμε να ανακαλύψουμε την αλήθεια σε αυτές τις σημαντικές λέξεις. Μέσω του πόνου του δικού μας σταυρού, μπορούμε να βρούμε μέσα μας μια πηγή δύναμης και κουράγιου, που ίσως δεν ξέραμε, ότι υπήρχε. Αποκτούμε μια βαθύτερη κατανόηση της ανθρωπότητας, μια μεγαλύτερη ευαισθησία και οίκτο για τον πόνο των άλλων ανθρώπων, και μια μεγαλύτερη ανάγκη να μοιραστούμε με άλλους την πεποίθηση και σιγουριά μας, ότι θα βγούμε από αυτά τα βάσανα νικητές. Ο Βίκτωρ Φράνκλ, περιγράφοντας την εμπειρία του στα γερμανικά στρατόπεδα στο βιβλίο του Η Αναζήτηση του Ανθρώπου για Νόημα, γράφει τα επόμενα λόγια: Η αυγή ήταν γκρίζα, γκρίζος ο ουρανός από πάνω, γκρίζο το χιόνι στο χλωμό φως της αυγής, γκρίζα τα κουρέλια τα οποία οι άλλοι φυλακισμένοι φορούσαν, και γκρίζα τα πρόσωπα τους. Πάλευα να βρω τον λόγο των βάσανων μου, του αργού θανάτου μου. Σε μια τελευταία, βίαιη διαμαρτυρία εναντίον της ματαιότητας του επικείμενου θανάτου μου, αισθάνθηκα το πνεύμα μου να διαπερνάει την κατάθλιψη, που μας τύλιγε. Το ένιωσα να ξεπερνάει εκείνον τον μάταιο, χωρίς νόημα κόσμο, και από κάπου άκουσα ένα θριαμβευτικό ΝΑΙ ως απάντηση των ερωτήσεων μου της ύπαρξης ενός μεγαλύτερου σκοπού. Εκείνη τη στιγμή, τα βαθιά βάσανα του Φράνκλ τον δίδαξαν ένα μάθημα τόσο βαθύ, όσο και τα βάσανα του, ότι η σκάλα της ελπίδας δεν έχει τίποτα να στηριχτεί σε αυτόν τον κόσμο. Κρατείται και προσφέρεται από πάνω, και έτσι γίνεται διαθέσιμη σε όλους που απλώνουν τα χέρια τους να την βρουν. Ο πόνος και το βάσανο που περνάμε είναι μοναδικά για το κάθε ένα άτομο, και το ίδιο ισχύει για τα μυριάδες μαθήματα, που μας διδάσκουν. Και όμως, από τα βάθη μας βγαίνουν κοινοί θησαυροί, που μπορούν να δυναμώσουν τον χαρακτήρα μας, να ακονίσουν την κατανόηση μας, και να βάλουν τις προτεραιότητες μας στην σωστή σειρά. Έτσι, για κάθε έναν από εμάς, κανένας πόνος δεν είναι χωρίς νόημα ή σκοπό. Ο Θεός μας επιτρέπει την εμπειρία του πόνου με την ελπίδα, ότι και εμείς θα μοιραστούμε με άλλους αυτά που μάθαμε, και θα γίνουμε πηγές ευλογίας και βοήθειας για αυτούς. Ας μείνουμε ανοιχτοί στην ανακούφιση, που μας δίνει ο Θεός, ώστε στον καιρό που Αυτός διαλέγει, θα παρηγορήσει άλλους μέσω των δούλων Του. 9

10 Message from the Community President Αγαπητή οικογένεια του Αγίου Δημητρίου, Το φθινόπωρο ήρθε με τα όμορφα χρώματα του, τη δροσιά του και μαζί του έφερε και τα φθινωπορινά προγράμματα της Κοινότητάς μας: Το Ελληνικό σχολείο με τους μικρούς μαθητές μας να τρέχουν, να γελούν και να μαθαίνουν, όσα Ελληνικά μπορούν, και εμείς δίπλα τους να καμαρώνουμε τα παιδιά μας και τα κατορθώματά τους. Το Κατηχητικό, που είναι για την εκκλησία μας το φυτώριο, που διαμορφώνει χαρακτήρες και που μέσα από αυτό τα παιδιά βάζουν στην ψυχούλα τους την πίστη και την αρετή. Για αυτό και οφείλουμε ένα μεγάλο «μπράβο» στους γονείς, που αγωνίζονται να οπλίσουν τα παιδιά τους με τη γνώση της κληρονομιάς μας. Το χορευτικά μας group, η GOYA, η Φιλόπτωχος, η AHEPA, οι κόρες της Πηνελόπης, όλα ξεκίνησαν δημιουργικά και με όρεξη. Αγαπητοί μου, θα ήθελα για άλλη μια φορά να τονίσω πόσο σημαντική είναι η βοήθεια όλων. Αν νομίζετε πως σε κάτι έχετε ταλέντο και θέλετε να αφιερώσετε λίγο από το χρόνο σας για την Κονότητά μας, ελάτε κοντά μας, και προσφέρετε τα ταλέντα σας στην Κοινοτική μας οικογένεια. Την ίδια πρόσκληση απευθύνω σε όλα τα μέλη, νέα και παλιά. Ειδικά τα νέα μέλη της Κοινότητας, ελάτε σε επικοινωνία και δώστε μας τα στοιχεία σας, για να σας ενημερώνουμε για όλα τα γεγονότα, εκδηλώσεις και ενδιαφέρουσες ειδήσεις, που μας αφορούν. Ελάτε να προσπαθήσουμε όλοι μαζί να κάνουμε το καλύτερο για την Κοινότητά μας. Τέλος, θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλους, όσους συμμετείχαν στο φθινοπωρινό καθαρισμό του προάυλιου χώρου της Εκκλησίας μας και όλους όσους έχουν αναλάβει κάποια δραστηριότητα, ώστε να υπηρετήσουν σε κάθε ομάδα την Κοινότητάς μας. 10

13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion.To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. 18 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. 20 The Ladies of Philoptochos The 2015 Folklorama was a huge success, and for this we are grateful to our wonderful Volunteers. Only 9 months are left for the next one, and we are preparing with great anticipation. We are open to new ideas and we would love to have Sponsors for this great event, as we have observed that all other pavilions do. We have the resources as so many of our people have their own businesses. We would appreciate a chairperson to undertake this position. We are able to always do a little bit more for our beautiful Community.Our participation is of great importance for the continuation of this great tradition. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the Daughters of Penelope are to encourage and promote loyalty to the country in which they live, cultivate the ideals and traditions of Hellenism, promote opportunities of education and promote the spirit of cooperation while working closely and in harmony with the entire AHEPA Family. They volunteer in many different organizations and support local needs, award scholarships, help the less fortunate, support their local church, and make a huge difference in their community. 27 CYPRIOT ASSOCIATION Cyprus Independence Day Cyprus Independence Day is celebrated on October 1. The day includes festivals and parades of schools and the military, including the display of tanks and other armory. At the end of the day, a special open event is held at the President s Palace. This holiday is separate from Cyprus National Day, which is marked on April 1. Both holidays relate to the same process of independence for Cyprus but each recognizes a different event. On April 1, 1955, Cyprus started a prolonged struggle to gain independence from Britain via the employment of a guerilla-type force called EOKA that fought against British colonial forces. In January of 1959, an agreement was signed in Zurich between Greece, Turkey, Britain and Cyprus, which was fine-tuned and came into effect on October 1,1960. During the earlier months of 1960, the Cyprus flag was designed and accepted as the Republic s official flag - a white flag with a copper-filled shape of the island of Cyprus that is underlined with two green olive branches. This flag is a large feature of the Independence Day celebrations: it is flown from buildings and flagpoles and carried by school children and military units (along with the Greek flag). Historic Meeting of Cypriot Political and Religious Leaders On September 10, 2015 the religious and political leaders of Cyprus came together for the first time at the Ledra Palace Hotel in an historic meeting, held under the auspices of the Swedish Embassy. President Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci met with Church of Cyprus Archibishop Chrysostomos II, the Mufti of Cyprus Talip Atalay, the Archbishop of the Maronite Church of Cyprus Soueif, the Archbishop of the Armenian Orthodox Church of Cyprus Nareg and the Reverend Jerzy Kraj of the Latin Catholic Church of Cyprus.They were accompanied by the moderator of the Office of the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process, Peter Weiderud and the Ambassador of Sweden, Klas Gierow. In remarks after the meeting, Mr Weiderud re-marked that the willingness of both community leaders to meet with the religious leaders in Ledra Palace gives great hope not only for the advancement of the common agenda on freedom of religion and belief but also how religion and dialogue of the religious leaders can better contribute to sustainable peace on the island and that has very much been the focus of the talks today. He also announced that the religious leaders expressed their support to the political process and offered their strong support to the community leaders to the dedicated work they are doing. 27

28 KEFI Dancers (Senior, Junior, Adult) Dance Classes for the 2015/2016 Season: Psarakia (grades 1-3) and Delfinakia (grades 4-6) will continue to have dance class during Greek School. If your child is NOT registered in Greek School and would like to participate in dance classes, please contact the Greek School for exact practice times for each grade. Jr. Kefi (grades 7-11): Classes will be Sundays from 6-7pm in the MHCC multipurpose room, unless otherwise noted. Registration fee is $50 per student. Dance practices for November are as follows: November 1, 2015 November 8, 2015 November 15, 2015 November 22, 2015 November 29, 2015 Please contact Agapi Katrakis at or if you are unable to attend dance practice. If less than four (4) dancers are available, dance practice will be cancelled. The Jr. Kefi assistant instructor for this year is Sam Korantzopoulos. If yes, we want them! The Greek Community of Winnipeg will be celebrating 100 years of incorporation in the City of Winnipeg. As part of the commemoration of this community milestone we are gathering photographs showcasing our wonderful community to be part of a Community Archive. The photos may be print or digital copies. All print copies will be returned once scanned. Thank you! GREEK FOLK COSTUMES Our community prides itself on having an extensive collection of authentic Greek folk costumes. These costumes are worn by our community groups for dance performances, as well as at events while representing our community. We would like to expand this collection, particularly the costumes for our youth. Currently, we have a limited number of costumes that will fit this age group, and we have an increasing interest from the kids to wear costumes during their dance performances. If you have a costume that you would like to donate to the community for use by community groups, such as Kefi and Greek School, please drop them off in the church office with the Office Administrator. All sizes and regions are welcome! 31 The Greek Community of Winnipeg Presents Chasing Lesvian Vampires: Modern Greek Folklore and the Archaeological Pursuit of the Vrykolaka A lecture by Dr. Matthew Maher, Department of Classics, University of Winnipeg Sunday, November 22, :30 pm Beginning with the origin and evolution of the well-known western vampire, it is demonstrated just how much our perception of vampires has been shaped by (and has shaped) the popular culture of the 19th, 20th, and of course, the 21st century. A folkloric analysis of the Greek vampire (vrykolaka) clearly indicates a pervasive and very real fear of the vampire in Eastern Europe. After exploring archaeological examples of suspected vampires in cases reported from Greece, Italy, and the United States, it is demonstrated that from a bioarchaeological standpoint, the belief in vampires can perhaps be explained by a number of more rational and scientific reasons.
