There will be no charges. Please bring your own plate to share and also your drinks. There will be some meze platters on each table from our Committee. Celebration of Easter Day Our traditional Easter will be again celebrated on Sunday 4 th of April at our community hall after the church service around 12:30pm. Traditional lambs on the spit will be available. It is important to RSVP by 28 th of March to avoid disappointment. Please contact our Committee member Michalis Miliotis at to make your reservations. Priority will be given to our members. The ticket prices are $25 for our members, $30 for non members and children from 7-15 years old $15 (members and non members) and under 7 years old are free. Εορτασμός του Πάσχα Το παραδοσιακό μας Πάσχα θα γιορτάσουμε την Κυριακή 4 Απριλίου στο χωλ μας μετά τη λειτουργία της εκκλησίας μας γύρω στις 12:30μμ. Θα έχουμε παραδοσιακά αρνιά στην σούβλα. Είναι απαραίτητο να κάνετε τις κρατήσεις σας μέχρι τις 28 Μαρτίου για να αποφύγουμε απογοητεύσεις. Θα δοθεί προτεραιότητα στα μέλη μας. March 25, the Independence Day in Greece March 25, the Independence Day in Greece March 25 is both a national (revolution against the Turks) and religious holiday (Annunciation). March 25 is the nameday for Vangelis or Evangelos and Vangelio or Evangelia or Eva. There is a school flag parade in every town and village and a big armed forces parade in Athens, the capital of Greece. The Byzantine Empire fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Greeks remained under the Ottoman rule for nearly 400 years. During this time their language, their religion and their sense of identity remained strong. On March 25, 1821 the bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in Peloponnese and one more revolution started against the Turks. The people of Greece shouted "Freedom or Death" and they fought the War of Independence for 9 years ( ) until a small part of modern Greece was finally liberated and it was declared an independent nation. The struggle for the liberation of all the lands inhabited by Greeks continued. In 1864, the Ionian islands were added to Greece; in 1881 parts of Epirus and Thessaly. Crete, the islands of the Eastern Aegean and Macedonia were added in 1913 and Western Thrace in After World War II the Dodecanese islands were also returned to Greece. The feast of the Annunciation marks the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he told her that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is celebrated on 25 March each year. More importantly, since it occurs 9 months before the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day, the Annunciation marks the actual incarnation of Jesus Christ the moment that Jesus was conceived and that the Son of God became the son of the Virgin. 25η Μαρτίου 1821 (Εθνική Εορτή) Η 25η Μαρτίου είναι η μια από τις δύο Εθνικές Εορτές μας. Την ημέρα αυτή τιμούμε τους ήρωες της επανάστασης του Τους ήρωες αυτούς που έδωσαν την ζωή τους ώστε η πατρίδα μας να είναι μια ελεύθερη χώρα. Από τις 29 Μαΐου του 1453, μετά την άλωση της Πόλης, και για τέσσερις αιώνες οι Έλληνες ζούσαν κάτω από την τουρκική κατοχή. Πολλοί από τους Έλληνες της εποχής αυτή δεν άντεχαν τον τουρκικό ζυγό και είχαν καταφύγει στα βουνά. Αυτοί ήταν και οι πρωτεργάτες της επαναστάσεως. Συνέχεια στη σελίδα 2 Page 1

2 Συνέχεια από σελίδα 1 Στις 25 Μαρτίου του 1821 στην μονή της Μέγιστης Λαύρας στα Καλάβρυτα, ο επίσκοπος Παλαιών Πατρών Γερμανός, σήκωσε το λάβαρο της επανάστασης. Τότε άρχισε επίσημα η Ελληνική Επανάσταση που οδήγησε μετά από πολλούς αγώνες και θυσίες, στην ελευθέρωση και αναγνώριση του Ελληνικού κράτους το 1830 με τη συνθήκη του Λονδίνου. Συνθήκη που υπέγραψαν στις 22 Ιανουαρίου του 1830 η Αγγλία, η Γαλλία και η Ρωσία. Δύο χρόνια μετά, στις 14 Αυγούστου 1832, ορίστηκαν και τα σύνορα της Ελλάδας να φτάνουν μέχρι την νοητή γραμμή που έχει άκρα τον Παγασητικό και τον Αμβρακικό κόλπο. Τον Δεκέμβριο του έτους αυτού αποδέχτηκε η Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία αυτή την απόφαση και από τότε ξεκινά η πορεία του Νέου Ελληνικού Κράτους. Ο εορτασμός της 25ης Μαρτίου ως Εθνικής Εορτής καθιερώθηκε με το διάταγμα 980, στις 15 Μαρτίου του Την ίδια χρονιά έγινε και ο πρώτος επίσημος εορτασμός. Τελέστηκε δοξολογία στον ναό της Αγίας Ειρήνης, στην οδό Αιόλου. Πλήθος κόσμου είχε μαζευτεί και ανάμεσα τους ήταν και οι αγωνιστές της επανάστασης, οι οποίοι αποθεώθηκαν. Μετά τη δοξολογία, στήθηκε γλέντι στην πλατεία Κλαυθμώνος. Το βράδυ άναψαν φωτιές στην Ακρόπολη. Στον Λυκαβηττό στήθηκε ένας φλεγόμενος σταυρός, που έφερε την φράση «ΕΝ ΤΟΥ- ΤΩ ΝΙΚΑ». Από τότε η 25η Μαρτίου, γιορτάζεται κάθε χρόνο, σαν μέρα τιμής στους ήρωες της επανάστασης του Η 25η Μαρτίου είναι μία μεγάλη γιορτή και ταυτόχρονα μία μεγάλη Εθνική Επέτειος. Γιορτάζουμε την επέτειο της έναρξης της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης και τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου, την χαρμόσυνη δηλαδή είδηση της γέννησης του Ιησού Χριστού, που έφερε ο Αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ στην Παρθένο Μαρία. Η 25η Μαρτίου είναι μία μεγάλη γιορτή και ταυτόχρονα μία μεγάλη Εθνική Επέτειος. Γιορτάζουμε τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου, την χαρμόσυνη δηλαδή είδηση της γέννησης του Ιησού Χριστού, που έφερε ο Αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ στην Παρθένο Μαρία. Η λέξη Ευαγγελισμός σημαίνει αναγγελία χαρμόσυνης είδησης και ετυμολογικά προέρχεται από το ευάγγελος (=ευ+άγγελος, αγγέλω) Ο Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου είναι από τις μεγαλύτερες γιορτές της Εκκλησίας μας. Είναι ημέρα χαράς και ελπίδας και γιορτάζεται πανηγυρικά από τον απανταχού Ελληνισμό. Island, in the Holy Saturday at 11 a.m. when the first bell of the First Resurrection is heard. At that time local people throw pots out of their windows, smashing them onto the streets below. Those special made ceramic pots, called "botides" can be more than 1 meter tall and they are filled with water to make a louder crash. The noisy custom lasts for 3-5 minutes and is watched by thousands of people, mostly tourists, as Corfu is the most popular destination in Greece for Easter holidays. There are different theories about the origin and the explanation of this custom. The first explanation for the custom has a religious meaning, as a representation of the Evangelic books that refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ with the words: "Resurrect o Lord and crush them as ceramic utensils". The second explanation gives to the custom a Venetian origin, as Venetians ruled the Island in 15th and 16th century : it is a variation of an old Venetian custom of new years eve, where they used to through old stuff from the window, so that the new year will bring then new ones. And the third one gives it a pagan provenance, as Easter time is the time when nature starts its new year and re-awakens after winter. ΝΑΥΠΑΚΤΟΣ Το βράδυ της Μ. Παρασκευής, πλήθος κόσμου, ντόπιοι και επισκέπτες, ακολουθούν την περιφορά του Επιταφίου, σχηματίζοντας πομπές, οι οποίες διέρχονται από το λιμάνι, όπου είναι αναμμένες δάδες ειδικά τοποθετημένες στις τάπες του Κάστρου, γύρω από το λιμάνι. Στο μέσον της εισόδου του λιμανιού οι δάδες σχηματίζουν μεγάλο σταυρό, που φωταγωγεί ολόκληρο το λιμάνι παρουσιάζοντας μία φαντασμαγορική εικόνα μοναδικής ομορφιάς. Το έθιμο αυτό έχει παράδοση πολλών χρόνων που φαίνεται να θέλει να συνδυάσει τη θρησκευτική μυσταγωγία με την ηρωική προσπάθεια του μπουρλοτιέρη Ανεμογιάννη να πυρπολήσει τη τουρκική ναυαρχίδα στο χώρο αυτό. pageid=419&langid=1 Πάσχα στην Κρήτη Easter Celebration in Corfu Greece The celebration of Greek Orthodox Easter in the Island Corfu is a unique experience, particularly impressive for anyone who visits this beautiful island. It tells the story of Hypatia, a female philosopher in Roman Egypt, who is portrayed by Weisz. With dramatic license, the biopic includes a romantic angle: her slave falls in love with her. The film was co-financed by Spanish company Sogecable. It was screened Out of Competition at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in May, was released in Spain on 9 October, and is being released country by country throughout late 2009 and early Cast Rachel Weisz plays Hypatia of Alexandria Max Minghella plays Davus, her slave Oscar Isaac as governor Orestes Sammy Samir as bishop and saint Cyril of Alexandria Manuel Cauchi as bishop Theophilus of Alexandria, uncle of Cyril Ashraf Barhom as Ammonius, a Parabolani monk BOOK WITH GREEK INTEREST Award-winning Plimmerton novelist Patricia Grace has turned her pen to non-fiction. Her latest book, Ned & Katina, takes place on the island of Crete during World War II. It tells the story of Ned Nathan, a wounded Maori Battalion soldier, who meets and falls in love with a Cretan woman, Katina. Ned and Katina Nathan's children asked Grace to tell their parents' story. "When they told me about the lives of their parents I became very interested and wanted to see if I could write something about them, and I could," says Grace. "It was a gift they gave me, but a responsibility too, to get everything right. "What I was aiming to do was to get to know the people I was writing about." In some ways she finds writing non-fiction is easier than fiction. "The plot is all set out and you know where you're going, but there's still fitting it altogether." However, writing Ned & Katina still required a lot of work. Grace said she had to research the war as well as Ned and Katina's story. "I found out a lot about that era. I had heard of the Battle of Crete, but I never knew what had happened there." The Battle of Crete began on May 20, 1941, when Germany launched an airborne invasion of Crete. For 12 days New Zealand, British, Australian and Greek troops, assisted by Cretan civilians, tried to repel the German assault. More than 2000 New Zealanders were taken prisoner; more than 650 died. Ned was one of many badly injured soldiers, forced to stay behind, relying on the shelter of the local community. Grace, who is of Ngati Toa, Ngati Raukawa and Te Ati Awa descent, is known for her focus on Maori stories found herself drawn to Ned's tale. "The idea of a Maori man and woman from a village in the mountains in Crete, that's intriguing to me." Ned and Katina's family helped with Grace's research, supplying documents, letters, photos and stories. She said the family's involvement was critical and she couldn't have done it without them. "The family had the resources; the cuttings, photos and all of their [Ned and Katina's] things. No matter how the book sells, it would not be a success if the family did not like it. "They were very supportive. From their point of view, it's their parents' story and it's about what was going on during that era. Also, they can give this to their children and grandchildren." Although Grace enjoyed writing Ned & Katina, she says it was hard work, especially writing appendices and photo captions, and ensuring all her references were correct. "It's not something I plan on doing again," she says. Page 3

4 Community Notices Bake Sale The Bake Sale was a huge success with people driving in all way from the North Shore to buy some spanakopita!! We opened the doors at 9am and by 10.30am we had sold out of every item!! People kept arriving until lunchtime wanting to buy greek "goodies". We are so pleased with this result and we made a profit of $ Next time we will organise to make twice the quantity so that noone misses out! Well done everyone who helped!! A special thank you to Mary Greanias for making countless chocolate chip cookies and cakes and to St Pierre s for providing all the pots of Taramasalata. Also a big Thank you to everyone who came to the hall to make baklava and other greek cakes and to all the other volunteers who baked cakes and pitas at home. We could not have done it without you!! Η Πώληση Γλυκών ήταν τεράστια επιτυχία όπου κόσμος ερχότανε από παντού και από το Νορθ Σόορ για να αγοράσει σπανακόπιτα! Ανοίξαμε τις πόρτες στις 9 το πρωί και στις 10:30 είχαμε πουλήσει τα πάντα!! Ο κόσμος ερχότανε μέχρι το μεσημέρι για να αγοράσει τις ελληνικές λιχουδιές. Χαρήκαμε πολύ με το αποτέλεσμα εισπράξαμε $ καθαρό κέρδος. Την επόμενη φορά θα κανονίσουμε διπλή ποσότητα φαγητού για να μην χάσει κανένας! Μπράβο σε όλους που βοηθήσανε!! Ειδικό ευχαριστώ στην Πρεσβειτέρα Μαρία που έφτιαξε πολλά σοκολατένια μπισκότα και κέικ και στο St Pierre s που μας παραθέσανε όλες τις ταραμοσαλάτες. Ευχαριστούμε όλους θερμά όλους όσους ήρθανε στο χωλ για να φτιάξουνε μπακλαβά και άλλα ελληνικά κέικ αλλά και όλους τους εθελοντές που φτιάξανε γλυκά και πίτες στο σπίτι τους. Δεν θα μπορούσαμε να το κάνουμε χωρίς εσάς!! Apokreatiko Glendi Our very own Apokreatiko Glendi was held on the evening of Saturday the 13th of February at our hall. After a busy day with the very successful Bake Sale it was great to see so many people attending this event. Everyone bought a plate of food to share and the Committee provided bbq meat and some salads. As is typical of Greek events there was a huge variety and amount of Greek food to be enjoyed. Our very own band "Greek Nights" was available to play for us and as usual they were a highlight of the night. The prize for the best costume went to Christina Daglas and Christina Simeonidis. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who helped out! Το μοναδικό Αποκριάτικό μας Γλέντι πραγματοποιήθηκε το Σάββατο 13 Φεβρουαρίου στο χωλ μας. Μετά από μια επιτυχημένη μέρα με την Πώληση Λιχουδιών (Γλυκών) ήταν πολύ ωραίο που ήρθε τόσος κόσμος. Ο καθένας έφερε και μοιράστηκε το πιάτο με το φαγητό του και το Συμβούλιο έκανε μπάρμπεκιου με κρέας και σαλάτες. Όπως κάθε παραδοσιακό Ελληνικό γλέντι υπήρχε άφθονο ελληνικό φαγητό. Η μοναδική μας ορχήστρα «Ελληνικές Βραδιές» έπαιξε για εμάς και ήτανε απίθανη. Το βραβείο για το καλύτερο κοστούμι δόθηκε στην Χριστίνα Ντάγκλας και στην Χριστίνα Συμεωνίδου. I, Margherita Jones, would like to thank everyone for coming to my recent birthday party in early January. Thanks to everyone for the gifts and the lovely food that came on the night. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. The amount raised on the night for the youth group was $326.80, so I would like to thank you for your generosity. 5 Shall we travel? - to meet Greece Why Santorini? The world famous island of Santorini is the southern most island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea, and is located 63 nautical miles north of Crete. HOW TO REACH SANTORINI By plane Santorini can be reached from most international airports via Athens. The flying time from Athens to Santorini is approximately 40 minutes. Nearly all international scheduled flights arriving in Athens allow adequate time for making the connecting flight to Santorini. By ferry boat Another way to reach the island is by a regular ferry boat service from the port of Piraeus, Thessaloniki or Crete and almost all the Cycladic islands. The boat trip takes approximately 8-13 hours depending on the ferry and the ports of call. Daily high speed boats are also available only during the summer period leaving from the port of Piraeus and from numerous other Cycladic islands and Crete. The trip lasts about 4 5 hours. Santorini's famous beaches are spread out mainly along the eastern and the south-eastern side of the island. Each beach has special characteristics, which make it unique and outstanding. The black shining pebbles, the unique land formations, the black, white and red sand, make up an unforgettable scenery. Most beaches are well organized offering the choice of lounging chairs, umbrellas, and various water sports. Perissa and Perivolos two of the most famous beaches of Santorini. These two beaches together form the longest black -sanded beach on the island. Here one will find also a variety of tavernas and restaurants as well as hotels. Vlychada with its beautiful carved mountain, the "moonscape" landscape, sculptured by the wind through the years. The Red beach with its unique vertical cliffs, the White beach, which can be reached only by boat, and the unspoilt beach of Mesa Pigadia form the epilogue of an unrevealing landscape, which has been transformed through the ages. If you are in the mood to live such a cosmopolitan and intense life as nowhere else in the world, the choices for entertainment in Santorini are plenty. After many decades of lively night life, Fira is still offering the classical way of entertainment in the island and has an array of choices for all tastes. Πάμε ταξίδι για να γνωρίσουμε την Ελλάδα Γιατί στην Σαντορίνη; Το νησί της Σαντορίνης βρίσκεται στο νοτιότερο άκρο του συμπλέγματος των Κυκλάδων, στο Αιγαίο Πέλαγος, 63 ναυτικά μίλια βόρεια της Κρήτης. Με αεροπλάνο ΠΩΣ ΜΠΟΡΕΙΤΕ ΝΑ ΠΑΤΕ; Σε όλη τη διάρκεια του χρόνου υπάρχουν καθημερινά δύο πτήσεις από Αθήνα για Σαντορίνη. Η διάρκεια της πτήσης Αθήνα - Σαντορίνη είναι περίπου 40 λεπτά. Με πλοίο Όλο το χρόνο, υπάρχουν καθημερινά δρομολόγια με συμβατικά πλοία που συνδέουν τη Σαντορίνη με τον Πειραιά. Το ταξίδι διαρκεί 8-13 ώρες, ανάλογα με τον τύπο του πλοίου και τα ενδιάμεσα λιμάνια που προσεγγίζει. Στη διάρκεια της καλοκαιρινής περιόδου δρομολογούνται από το λιμάνι του Πειραιά ταχύπλοα πλοία νέας τεχνολογίας που καλύπτουν τη διαδρομή σε 4-5 περίπου ώρες. Την καλοκαιρινή περίοδο υπάρχει επίσης σύνδεση με την Κρήτη, τη Θεσσαλονίκη και με τα περισσότερα νησιά των Κυκλάδων. Οι διάσημες παραλίες της Σαντορίνης εκτείνονται κυρίως κατά μήκος της ανατολικής και της νότιας πλευράς του νησιού. Κάθε παραλία έχει χαρακτηριστικά τα οποία την καθιστούν μοναδική και σημαντική. Τα μαύρα λαμπερά χαλίκια, οι μοναδικοί σχηματισμοί εδάφους, η μαύρη, άσπρη και κόκκινη άμμος, δημιουργούν ένα αξέχαστο τοπίο. Όλες οι παραλίες είναι καλά οργανωμένες με ξαπλώστρες, ομπρέλες και δυνατότητα συμμετοχής σε θαλάσσια σπορ. Δύο από τις πιο διάσημες παραλίες της Σαντορίνης είναι η Περίσσα και ο Περίβολος. Αυτές οι δύο παραλίες διαμορφώνουν τη μακρύτερη μαύρη-στρωμένη με άμμο παραλία στο νησί. Εδώ θα βρει κανείς ποικιλία από ταβέρνες, εστιατόρια και ξενοδοχεία. Οι νοτιότερες παραλίες του νησιού είναι: - Η Βλυχάδα με το όμορφο βουνό και το σεληνιακό τοπίο που σμιλεύεται από τον αέρα μέσω των ετών. - Η Κόκκινη Παραλία με τους μοναδικούς απότομους βράχους, η Ασπρη Παραλία που πρόσβαση υπάρχει μόνο με βάρκα και η παραλία στη περιοχή Μέσα Πηγάδια που διαμορφώνει ένα υπέροχο τοπίο που έχει μετασχηματιστεί μέσω των ηλικιών. Οι επιλογές για διασκέδαση στη Σαντορίνη είναι πολλές, αρκεί να έχει κανείς τη διάθεση να ζήσει τόσο κοσμοπολίτικα και τόσο έντονα όσο σε λίγα μέρη στον κόσμο. Μετά από πολλές δεκαετίες έντονης νυχτερινής ζωής, τα Φηρά αποτελούν ακόμα τον κλασικό τόπο διασκέδασης στο νησί και προσφέρουν μια ευρεία γκάμα επιλογών για όλες τις προτιμήσεις. Page 5

6 Συνέντευξη του μήνα Interview of the month The interview of the month is with aperry Katsoulis (Παρασκευάς Κατσούλης), a member of our Community, who has achieved as a business man, along with his family, much success GREEK ROOTS I was born in Wellington in February My parents, George and Sophia, were Greeks who emigrated to New Zealand in the late 50s. Originally born in Romania, to parents who themselves had emigrated from Samos and from Thrace early in the century, they strongly maintained their Greek Heritage while growing up. After World War 2 my parent s families moved to Athens, where they lived for 10 years, and there my parents met and got engaged. My mother had attended College and thereafter worked as an Accountant with the largest department store in Athens, Lambropoulos Brothers. By the mid 50s however most of their family had emigrated to New Zealand, and so family ties were calling. The journey to New Zealand took my parents, traveling with my grand parents, 3 weeks by sea, during which my mother was frequently sea sick, while my father enjoyed himself on deck. Upon arriving in Wellington, my mothers initial impression was not great, and she affectionately said to my father, George, lets save up and go back to Greece! Of course that never happened, and they quickly settled into a happy routine. They married in the Greek Orthodox church in Lloyd St, and lived firstly in Tasman St Newtown, and thereafter in Taranaki St where we were brought up. We had an extremely happy childhood, and were brought up in a typical Greek tradition. Our grandparents lived with us, and they were always there to give good advice, and the odd shilling too! My grandfather tended a garden with grape vines, corn, apples, and other vegetables. He made wine and also Koliva for the Greek church, as he was originally a pastry cook. My father like many Greek immigrants started working at the wharves, and soon after went into business with my uncle in a traditional seafood store. My mother worked for AMP insurance for some time, then stopped work to look after us when my brother Costa was born, followed by brothers Nick and Foti. Our Greek traditions were strongly upheld by my parents, and in fact I only learnt to speak English when I went to school at five years old. Mt Cook school was a multi cultural school, with Chinese, Indians, Greeks, Maoris, Samoans, and even New Zealanders. Every year it held a United nations day, where all the different cultures performed their traditional dances, and songs. My mother who was also teaching Greek at the local community, taught the children the Kalamatiano, and the Greek national anthem. That was fine, but we always felt silly dressing up as Tsoliathes no matter how proud my mother said we should be! As with many Greek children, Greek school and church were a weekly routine. Greek school 3 days a week after school was always a chore, although we had a very passionate teacher, Mr Lefteris who praised us and kept us motivated. There were a trio of who he singled out, and enjoyed teaching us. At the end of the Greek school years his motivation helped me achieve an award for best non Greek born student. Over the years we grew up as part of the Greek community. There was church, the annual Greek dances at the Apollon, and we had many Greek friends and of course our cousins. MY FIRST TRIP TO GREECE My love affair with Greece began when I was 17 years old in Before then my impressions of Greece were post cards and pictures of the Acropolis. I had never visited Greece. Theo Thanasi, my mothers brother, who had been a cook in the Greek navy, invited me to go with him and my three cousins on a trip to Europe and then Greece. As Greece was our final destination we could not wait. We spent three months of a wonderful summer traveling around mainland Greece, and the islands. Every day was spent at the beaches, the tavernas, and visiting the fabulous ancient ruins and historical sites. It was exciting relaxing and adventurous. At 17 there are few worries, and I felt totally at home. My uncle, who was very free spirited and who loved Greece, also introduced me to the delicacies of Retsina, Ouzo, and octopus. He was proud that he had been brought up in Piraeus, and that he had survived several sinkings during the war. He also insisted you should never order off a menu at a Taverna, but go into the kitchen to see what is freshly cooked! I will never forget that trip. THE FAMILY BUSINESS Upon returning to NZ I vowed to return to Greece as soon as possible. However the realities of University life made it impossible at the time. After graduating with a BCom, I worked for IBM for a year. However immediately I could sense that the corporate world would not be fully satisfying for me. Self employment was calling me. Another Greek tradition. I persuaded my brothers to join together and along with our fathers support (He mortgaged his house so we could obtain a loan for the first shop) we opened the first St Pierre s store in the BNZ Centre in Wellington, in August Like all new businesses, the first few years are always the most difficult, and we went through several excrutiating months when we thought we should just quit, and go and get regular jobs. Our fathers support was always there however, and we felt we should keep persisting. At the end of the first year, St Pierre s which was then an enormous delicatessen with cheeses, salamis, fish and many gourmet delicacies won Wellington s top store as voted by the public. We survived the 87 crash, which taught us many lessons, and slowly expanded the Company. My brother Nick moved to Auckland and opened the first Auckland shop. Business can be a very satisfying although risky career, and we made many friends and formed lasting relationships. We opened a joint venture in Saudi Arabia and I also visited China, as well as making several trips to the USA where we studied retailing. 25 years later St Pierre s still survives as a family business. We are extremely proud of our 300 employees who we treat as much as possible as a family, and we still enjoy running the Company. We will soon have 30 branches, in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton with the latest opening last week in Tauranga. Our business now specializes in Sushi and Japanese food, and we import all our key ingredients from Japan, where we go annually to visit our suppliers, and check out market trends. FAMILY AND BACK TO GREECE! Family has always been very important to me. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife, Coral, and two fantastic children, Louis and Zoe, now 16 and 13. 7 Συνέχεια από σελίδα 6 In 1999, when my daughter was just one year old, we decided to take a trip to Greece, my first time in 22 years. We traveled around the Greek islands, visiting Poros, Hydra, Spetses and other places. The following year we went to Cephalonia. Ithaki, Samos, Kos, and Serifos. We were addicted. My old passions for Greece had been brought back to life. Although this was not the Greece of my teen age years, it was still fabulous. We fell in love with Sifnos, a beautiful Greek island in the Cyclades, and went there for several years. It was then we started thinking how wonderful it would be to invest in a small island house. A few years ago our dream came true and we are now building a house on the island. We feel very fortunate. My wife Coral and our children Louis and Zoe love our trips to Greece and it certainly has given us a special relationship. We love going to Amorgos, and always enjoy visiting Athens. We have made good friendships there with local people and others who regularly go there. My son Louis enjoys learning Greek, and although yet to test his fluency has benefited greatly from Greek school and especially from his teacher Ilias. Both children have been fortunate to have him as their teacher. My feeling is that my parents and relatives have planted the Greek roots deeply in me. My hope is that I can do the same for my children, and I hope they can do the same for theirs. The Membership fee for a family is only $50 and for an individual $30 annually. Most of the funds raised from membership fees are used for publishing and mailing the Community s newsletter to all members.
