Το πρότζεκτ αυτό ξεκίνησε με τη μάχη της Rainer εναντίον ενός ναρκισσιστικού-ηδονοβλεπτικού προτύπου της χορευτικής YVONNE RAINER b.1934, San Francisco, California, United States by Erin Brannigan My films always were meant to confound in a certain way. (Yvonne Rainer) 1 Dancer, choreographer, performer, filmmaker and writer Yvonne Rainer, who began choreographing in 1961 and made her first film in 1967, is a key figure in the story of the New York avant-garde in terms of both her writing and practice. 2 Rainer provided a commentary on the influences that preceded her own aesthetic objectives and articulated her own project through practice and explicatory discourse, establishing her position as a key player within the New York avant-garde from the early 1960s through to the mid-nineties. During this period she produced twelve films, including silent short works for multimedia performances (which she calls filmed choreographic exercises 3 ) as well as features. According to Rainer, her fascination with dance and film emerged simultaneously when she moved on from acting at 25. She is certainly a choreographer who had as many film reference points as choreographic, evidenced in her use of projection in her stage work and her erudite use of cinematic quotation in her film work. 4 What links Rainer s dance and film work is an intense critique of disciplinary conventions and a profound interrogation of the role of performance. Performance is central to all aspects of Rainer s work; she herself refers to performance as the subject matter in her films and Peggy Phelan describes her writings as rhetorical performances. 5 Rainer s parents were migrants, her mother Polish-Jewish ( a potential stage mother ) and her father Italian ( an anarchist and a house painter ), who settled in San Francisco. Rainer describes herself as a shy child who liked to read and her childhood as depressed. 6 At around 15 she started attending socialist-anarchist meetings with her brother where she made friends with some visiting New Yorkers. At 20 Rainer fell into acting school at the Theater Arts Colony in San Francisco, but after some frustrations there she moved to New York with a painter, Al Held. There she became involved in the visual arts scene and continued acting classes, now at the Herbert Berghof school where she was told she was too intellectual. Rainer started full-time training at the Martha Graham School at 25 and danced full-time with the support of her parents, spending her spare time at the Museum of Modern Art watching film classics. She moved on to Merce Cunningham s classes and then became part of an informal collective meeting in the Cunningham studios who would work together and perform for each other. Yvonne Rainer became a central figure in the American postmodern dance movement, specifically the New York activity surrounding the venue, Judson Church. Following Merce Cunningham s lead, Judson Dance Theatre was inclusive of artists working in other disciplines. Filmmaking was particularly predominant at Judson Dance Theatre events and Sally Banes describes this area as a key outgrowth of the group. 7 A film work, by regular contributor Elaine Summers and others, opened the very first Judson performance and within the series there were other screenings including Brian De Palma s 1963 film, Woton s Wake (which parodies Maya Deren among other things). 8 Peter Wollen and Vicky Allan have written that experimental filmmakers have always been interested in analogies between dance and film as kinetic and time-based art forms, 9 and in the case of the 60s and 70s, choreographic and film/video strategies can be discussed as concomitant with the two disciplines informing and elaborating on each other. Rainer ultimately states, however, that her influences were from outside the experimental film scene; that she was familiar with the work of Maya Deren and filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage and Kenneth Anger, but the ideas didn t really turn me on the way that [John] Cage s ideas in music and 60s art practices had. 10 Yvonne Rainer was one of the first dance practitioners to make a wholesale return to the everyday body as an alternative to the performing body which displays skills and virtuosity. Rainer s choreographic innovations involved combining movements that completely digress from the functional or purposeful with the tone of an everyday attitude. This led to the development of an even, anti-dramatic phrasing, challenging the traditional intentionality behind performance with the dancer appearing as a neutral doer. Rainer thus set up a tension between the actions themselves (non-mimetic, choreographed content) and the tone of their execution (pedestrian attitude, non-virtuosic); a tension between content and performance. This interest in the relation between content material and notions of performance, and its impact on what Phelan terms the relation between spectacle and spectator, 11 continued in Rainer s film work. Rainer s films have mainly been analysed from within a feminist or avant-garde framework, and her career has been viewed as a linear progression with problems that emerged in her dancing being worked through in her films. Rainer s position as an innovator within film practice, pre-empting major shifts in both feminist discourse and avant-garde film movements, can be traced to her shift across disciplines bringing ideas and strategies from postmodern dance, visual arts and musical composition to the avant-garde film scene in New York. One of the most discussed aspects of Rainer s shift from dance to film has circled around her reconfiguration of the performer/spectator relation. This project began with Rainer s battle against a narcissistic/voyeuristic model of dance performance, a critique that had ideological repercussions for the dance audience. Rainer s choreography was freed from the exclusivity of virtuosic dance; an everybody was performing and this thrilled as many people as it shocked. A new relation between performer and spectator was achieved through a suppression of spectacle in the dancer s activity on stage, a kinetic familiarity with the corporeal performance, challenging phrasing that evened out dramatic crescendos and an aversion of the dancer s gaze. Spectatorial reconditioning was achieved through the very construction and execution of the dances, was built into the performance, inserting into her work an inherent socio-political challenge. The continuities between Rainer s performance strategies on stage and on screen are enlightening given the radical break she was making with contemporaneous trends in avant-garde film. If Rainer s films explore the ways in which art was undemocratic, ideological, fraught with problems related to power and authority, and decidedly mediated,12 she had already undertaken an exploration of such issues within her choreographic work. The sense of continuity within and across Rainer s two bodies of work comes from the continual questioning of meaning construction and presentation through performance, whether on the level of the actions of performers or the total performance comprising of the constituent elements of the work. 24 / VIDEODANCE 2007

Αλλά The continuities between Rainer s performance strategies on stage and on screen are enlightening given the radical break she was making with contemporaneous trends in avant-garde film. Rainer deconstructs the smooth surface of cinematic construction and critiques the politics of its spectator/performer relations by interrogating the basic components of the apparatus, just as she had deconstructed the performance conventions of contemporary dance by adjusting the tone and phrasing of the choreography at the level of the basic unit. The various combinations and contradictions of figural movement, image, spoken or printed text, sound and spatial perspective, and the relation of this on-screen material to audience expectation, is an area for constant interrogation in Rainer s films. 13 An interest in the relation between content and notions of performance, what Peggy Phelan 25 / VIDEODANCE 2007

Ο ρόλος της χορογραφίας έμελλε να αλλάζει σ όλη τη διάρκεια της κινηματογραφικής An interest in the relation between content and notions of performance, what Peggy Phelan terms Rainer s literal exploration of the disconnections between form and content, can be read in relation to narrative in Rainer s films. Rainer often discusses what could be called a play with the transmission of the performative in her screen work within the context of her interrogation of the cinematic elements of narrative and character. In 1978, Rainer spoke at The International Forum on Avant-Garde Film, discussing the demands of narrative filmmaking and describing a type of film that contains both narrative and non-narrative characteristics : For example, a series of events containing answers to when, where, why, whom, gives way to a series of images, or maybe a single image, which, in its obsessive repetitiveness or prolonged duration or rhythmic predictability or even stillness, becomes disengaged from story and enters this other realm, call it catalogue, demonstration, lyricism, poetry or pure research. The work now floats free of ultimate climax, pot of gold, pay-off, future truth, existing solely in the present. Or perhaps a work that starts out being meditative, concerned with resonance, mood suddenly changes its density by appropriating elements of melodrama. Rainer s rewiring of the conventions of cinematic production and generic expectation challenge the kind of cinema of illusion and exclusion based on an ordering notion of production, what Rainer calls the tyranny of the predominating form of narrative. What Rainer is describing in the quote above, these images that repeat, prolong, create rhythm, freeze, result in an alternative cinema that never completely gives over its connections with narrative conventions. These choreographic elements that play with movement across space and time demonstrate Rainer s interest in cinematic motion beyond movements of production, 14 but are only activated when they bump up against the narrativity that becomes more and more important across Rainer s oeuvre. Rainer often cites Jean Luc Godard in her writing and his influence is certainly felt in these strategies that work the space between the narrative and non-narrative in a detailed and sophisticated way. In Lives of Performers, Rainer s first full-length film and the one that most clearly demonstrates her shift from dance to film, the distance from narrative cinematic conventions and critique of traditional spectatorial positions is pronounced. Often considered as a kind of early sketch within Rainer s oeuvre that hasn t quite made the shift from stage to screen, this film lays bare Rainer s founding strategies that will go on to support her increasingly political content. In Lives of Performers there is no higher order or purpose structuring the action on screen and the elements and sections of the film are strung together like her uninflected dance phrases; no single part is given more value, the score is not subservient to the visuals, there is no central character with whom we identify. Rainer says the two ideas that frame Lives of Performers are dance and emotional life, and the film does revolve around both the on and off-stage, fictional and non-fictional activities of a group of dancer/performers. Footage of dance rehearsals, dramatic enactments, photo stills and tableaux vivants are set against a sound score that comments on and runs across the action. As Rainer puts it, although a very loaded set of circumstances begins to emerge in Lives of Performers, you cannot follow the story in the film. These circumstances are created through an exposition of the characters private and emotional lives via the spoken text and certain enacted scenes and images. But any sense of a fictional narrative is thwarted; the performers real names are used and are consequently mixed around, and the degree of realism in the naming of the cast bleeds into the romantic involvements and character attributes which could be mistaken as real. Spontaneous, intimate and realistic elements are set against the contrived and theatrical to subvert any persistent sense of the fictional; the layering of performances is confounding. Despite this play on notions of character, Rainer doesn t baulk from the use of melodrama or comedy on screen whenever she sees fit. But the melodramatic aspects of the film talk of love, desire and sexual contact, scenes of emotional intimacy, love triangles are countered by the filmic treatment which thwarts genre expectations. This subversion is particularly pointed in the distance that the commentary on the actions creates. The following quotation reiterates Rainer s comments above regarding the use of excessive cinematic movements in shifting the progression of the film from the horizontal to something more vertical : Where narrative seems to break down in my films is simply where it has been subsumed by other concerns, such as the resonances created by repetition, stillness, allusion, prolonged duration, fragmented speech and framing, self-conscious camera movement, etc. Rather than being integrated into the story, these things at times replace the story. Often, the orders of cinematic movement in Lives of Performers not only interrupt, but overwhelm any possibility of a horizontal drive in the film. For instance, the prolonged shot of Valda in her newly arrived sun visor exceeds any signifying function. There is also a substantial amount of stillness in the film, either through the freezing of action or shots of/pans over photographs. The director spends precious film stock on still photographs including images from a dance performance that the cast were involved in just prior to the film being made, and her reconstructions of pictorial compositions for the camera is strange and disturbing. Lives of Performers ends with a series of tableaux vivants, re-enacting the series of published production stills from a scenario of Pandora s Box. Movement and stillness exist for their own 26 / VIDEODANCE 2007

Ο σχολιασμός της Rainer χαρακτηρίζεται πάντα από σκεπτικισμό και ειρωνεία παρά από κυνισμό και απαισιοδοξία θέλει να προκαλέσει, όχι να αποξενώσει. also a substantial amount of stillness in the film, either through the freezing of action or shots of/pans over photographs. Movement and stillness exist for their own choreographic qualities, independent of narrative demands. One influence on Rainer in these early films that has not received much attention is the role of cinematographer Babette Mangolte, recently arrived to New York and prior to working with Chantal Ackerman. 15 Mangolte provides a link between Rainer and the innovative Paris-based film director whose attention to screen performance and anti-narrative film movement makes her work of relevance. Both dance as a type of performance along with a choreographic approach to other types of figural and filmic movement feature in Lives of Performers, and Rainer s choreographic background is perhaps most evident in this her first feature film. She describes the script for this film as being like choreographic directions, outlining groupings and regroupings and points to her interest in the effects of movement and stillness as a result of her dance days. But Rainer has already made the shift toward a more cinematic type of physical performance. On this adjustment Rainer writes: I was not only jettisoning a whole lexicon of formalized movement and behaviour, realizing instinctively that certain concessions to lifelikeness would have to be made. For the most part my speaking performers would be doing what people, or characters, so often do in the movies : sit around, eat, walk down the street, ride bicycles, look at things etc. If they danced in my early films, I gave them good reason assigning them the occupation dancer.(93) While dancers do dance in Lives of Performers, an equality is established between the movements of drama and movements identified as dance. Various entries by a protagonist (Valda Setterfield) into a room during a stage performance are cut together and draw our attention to the physical performance through repetition and variation. The same woman performs a solo in a spotlight, creating shapes with her arms, and this stylised movement has the same performative tone and inexplicable function as the previous example. The role of choreography would change throughout Rainer s film career. In relation to Journeys from Berlin/1971, Rainer says: So I guess the remnants of choreography and dance in my work manifest themselves in a certain kind of attention to physicality and have been subsumed by movement of the camera, framing and montage... In Journeys from Berlin I rehearsed... for over nine months and every gesture was choreographed down to the blink of an eye. 16 Ultimately there was an increasing shift toward dialogue in Rainer s film work, what she called the language-oriented strategies of my films and giving the example of Kristina Talking Pictures (1976) where characters sit up in bed and literally yap for forty minutes. By the time we get to Journey from Berlin/1971 (1980), Noel Carroll declares a revolution in the structurally obsessed American avant-garde film scene, stating that in this film language is more important than image. Rainer s subversive strategies regarding film form have provided the groundwork for, not only her philosophical and feminist subject matter, but an ever-broadening field of socio-political concerns both large and small; from the politics of New York real estate to the clinical demonising of menopause. As Adrian Martin writes, Rainer has always been a tough, critical, ever sceptical political artist,17 but she is also one who never commits the cardinal sin of losing her sense of humour. Μια μεταβατική εκδοχή του The Mind Ιs a Muscle (Judson Church, 22 Μαΐου, 1966) ερμηνεύτηκε από τους William Davis, David Gordon και Steve Paxton. [ ] Yvonne Rainer The winding story of a landmark choreography. I worked on Trio A alone for six months in The dance consisted initially of a 5-minute sequence of movement that would eventually be presented as The Mind is a Muscle, Part I at Judson Church on January 10, There it was performed by me, David Gordon, and Steve Paxton simultaneously but not in unison. In an interim version of The Mind is a Muscle (Judson Church, May 22, 1966), it was performed by William Davis, David Gordon, and Steve Paxton. In the final section, called Lecture, Peter Saul executed a balletic solo version, i.e. with pirouettes and jumps. In the final version (Anderson Theater, April 11, 1968), Trio A was performed by me in tap shoes in its original version at the end of the evening, while Paxton, Gordon, and Davis performed it as a trio at the beginning. The individual sequences last from 4 to 5, depending on each performer s physical inclination. Two primary characteristics of the dance are its unmodulated continuity and its imperative involving the gaze. The eyes are always averted from direct confrontation with the audience via independent movement of the head or closure of the eyes or simple casting down of the gaze. Since its completion Trio A has undergone many incarnations. In 1967 I performed it solo as a Convalescent Dance (Angry Arts Week, Hunter Playhouse) [ ]. In 1970 I and some members of the Grand Union Lincoln Scott, Steve Paxton, David Gordon, Nancy Green, and Barbara Dilley performed it in the nude at Judson Church with five-foot American flags tied around our necks during the opening of the People s Flag Show (organized by Jon Hendricks, Faith Ringgold, and Jean Toche as a protest against the arrest of various people accused of desecrating the American flag, including gallery owner Stephen Radich, who had shown the flag-defiling work of sculptor Mark Morrel in 1967 and whose case traveled all the way to the Supreme Court, where it was thrown out on a technicality). [ ] In 1971 Pat Catterson performed it in reverse (now fully clothed) during her own evening of work at Merce Cunningham s studio; later that year she and a group of her students performed it on the sidewalk outside my hospital window. In 1972 Steve Paxton Performed Trio A for one hour at L Attico Gallery in Rome. In 1973 I incorporated it into the narrative of my multi-media This is the story of a woman who... In 1978, five years after I had stopped performing, I performed it in Merce Cunningham s studio for a 16mm film shoot (produced by Sally Banes). The life of Trio A for the next eleven years eludes me. [ ] On October 4, 1999, Trio A was performed at Judson Church by Pat Catterson, Y.R., Douglas Dunn, Steve Paxton, and Colin Beatty as Trio A Pressured. Pat Catterson danced it backwards; Rainer, Dunn, and Paxton as a trio; Y.R. and Beatty as a duet in which his movements were predicated on keeping her face in view; Catterson and Y.R. as a duet accompanied by The Chambers Brothers In the Midnight Hour. On August 3, 2000, Trio A Pressured #3 was performed by members of the White Oak Dance Project as part of the program PAST/forward and in the fall of 2002 it was included in a White Oak tour of European cities. 9 Η αρχιτεκτονική του ονείρου ή το φιλμ είναι ένα αίνιγμα The architecture of the dream or film is an enigma Ναι, είναι εκατομμύρια αστέρια. 1 Antonio Porchia Yes, there are millions of stars. And a million stars are two eyes looking at them. Λες και η επικίνδυνη αυτή ισορροπία μοιάζει να είναι απαραίτητη για την κινηματογραφική πράξη [ ]». 13 Τéo Ηernandez shot across the subterranean firmament of French cinema, leaving behind him a voluminous oeuvre over one hundred films, mostly in Super 8, thirty-one notebooks of meditations, and countless scripts, drafts and rushes 2 of his films which still remains largely inaccessible to the viewer since it is so rarely screened. Following the practice of the filmmaker as absolute creator who undertakes the entire process of making a film from its beginning to its final form, Ηernandez produced a multifarious oeuvre, at times tiptoeing into pure paroxysm, at times being compressed into hieratic stoicism, piercing like a straight line the main points of its universe: the Christopathic male body, baroque aesthetics, 3 the everyday as ritual, and ending up in death as a celebration of transformation. 4 Born in Mexico in 1939, Hernandez studied architecture. He came in contact with film in 1959, on the one hand through the founding of a group, together with his friend Antonio Campomanes, with an aim to create independent cinema in Mexico, and on the other, through the screenings at the French Institute of Latin America (I.F.A.L.) which helped to develop his feel of cinema. In 1968 he made his first film, 14, Bina Gardens (9 ), during a brief sojourn in London. This was followed a year later by Un film provocado por (26 ), shot in Paris, where he had been living since During the first period of his filmography, he made a series of 8mm films in Tangiers and Southern Morocco, where he traveled with Michel Nedjar, a sculptor and filmmaker and Hernandez s companion to the end of his life. In Images du bord de la mer (1969, 34 ), Estrellas de ayer (1969, 7 ), and Michel là-bas (1970, 21 ), one can already discern the themes that he persistently recycled in his oeuvre: the cinematic journal, 5 the portrait, love of literature, the journey, mythology. 2nd notebook, 19/12/81. Metro, 22:30. [ ] With my films I blend Hispanic austerity and the barbarity of the Aztecs [ ]. 6 In 1975, upon returning from his six-year wanderings with Nedjar through the East and Latin America, Hernandez settled permanently in Paris, where, one year later, he filmed his first film in Super 8, the emblematic Salomé (1976, 70 ), a ritualistic, hieratic and slow work, it is typical of his early style. 7 Salomé was a hallucinatory variation of Christian tradition as seen through the prism of the play by the same title, written in French by Oscar Wilde between This was the time when Hernandez screened his films himself, at slow speed, using a small projector and bringing to his images a dreamlike haze: 26th notebook, 07/04/83. Rue des Entrepôts, 14:20. [ ] The ritual of the film screening is a repetition of the daily ritual, of sleeping and dreaming. 8 During that period, Hernandez rallied together with Stéphane Marti, Maria Klonaris, Katerina Thomadaki, Jakobois, and Lionel Soukaz to form Une école du corps 9 (A School of the Body) filmmakers group, which under the influence of the Body Art artists Gina Pane and Michel Journiac focused on the perception of the human body through the cinematic act as a ritual, taking full advantage of the possibilities offered by the light equipment of Super st notebook, 08/04/90. Vision is a natural effort expressed through the drive of the entire body. 11 In the Le Corps de la Passion tetralogy consisting of the films Cristo ( 1977, 65 ), Cristaux (1978, 70 ), Lacrima Christi ( , 127 ), and Graal (1980, 77 ) Téo Hernandez examined the Passion of Christ as an archetypical story that interprets the West s morality and world view. These four films are built at the base of a set of references to the Christian myth which is perceived not as an illustration but as an exploration of the vision of the world [ ]. 12 Gradually, Hernandez s cinema speeds up and his photography becomes more free. The result is a color fluidity through the vigorous use of the camera and the fast-paced editing Corps aboli (1978, 24 ), Maya ( , 95 ). In his subsequent films, this technique evolved into the choreography of the camera around the object which is being filmed: 18th notebook, 10/02/88. [ ] When I m filming, [ ] I put my body in a state of imbalance, standing on one leg. It is as if this dangerous balance is necessary for the cinematic act [ ]. 13 Together with his friends and collaborators Michel Nedjar, Jakobois, and Gaël Badaud Hernandez set up the MétroBarbèsRochechou Art group, a name inspired by the metro station at Barbès, a district in the north of Paris where exoticism and the West converge. As a collective, they shot 4 à 4 MétroBarbèsRochechou Art ( , 65 ) and Grappe d yeux ( , 13 ), in which they filmed each other in a homosexual act carried out in a spirit of absolute freedom. Together with his friends and collaborators Michel Nedjar, Jakobois, and Gaël Badaud Hernandez set up the MétroBarbèsRochechou Art group, a name inspired by the metro station at Barbès, a district in the north of Paris where exoticism and the West converge. As a collective, they shot 4 à 4 MétroBarbèsRochechou Art ( , 65 ) and Grappe d yeux ( , 13 ), in which they filmed each other in a homosexual act carried out in a spirit of absolute freedom. Hernandez traversed Paris with them, recording the city on a series of electrical postcards: 14 Nuestra Señora de Paris ( , 22 ), Parvis Beaubourg ( , 52 ), L eau de la Seine ( , 18 ). At the same time, he continued to methodically 15 give shape to an oeuvre that was directly autobiographical, based on his personal triptych of observation-interpretation-transformation: 16 Tables d hiver ( , 39 ), Souvenirs / Florence (1981, 19 ), Trois gouttes de mezcal dans une coupe de champagne (1983, 16 ), 30 films brefs ( , 42 ). 10th notebook, 21/04/84. Rue des Entrepôts, 22:53. I often make the following mistake: when noting the frame rate in my filmography, I write down my name instead of the number. Frame rate: Téo Hernandez. [ ] Conscious of the increased possibilities existing in the synthesis of 30 films brefs, another title could be: 25 years of cinema (referring to the next 25 years during which I will be making films). And the sum of my films could include all the aspects of my life and my cinematic oeuvre: like a personal magazine in which homeland, family, childhood, adolescence, travels, people, are all represented and recalled in relation to everything: paranoia, gender, solitude, misogyny, nymphomania, color, light, editing [ ]. 17 In 1985 Hernandez made VITRIOL (1985, 17 ), the film that marked the beginning of his collaboration with studio dm, owned by the dancers/choreographers Bernardo Montet and Catherine Diverrès, and the turning of his gaze to the filming of dance as an inescapable evolution of his longtime research into the corporeality of cinema: Pas de ciel (1987, 28 ), Création de Concertino (1990, 29 ), Déjeuner sur l herbe (1991), 18 and the Tauride film series (1992) th notebook, 18/04/88. Malik Market, 13:40. [ ] Watching the dancers dancing, we often cry out: they will die! And indeed, their work, their dance consists precisely in this: to empty space of their death; to carve the void in order for their death to better appear. [ ] To empty the room of every reflection [ ]. 20 On 19 June 1992 Téo Hernandez wrote in his notebook for the last time: to be suspended in the void, in space [...] to kick away the invisible, to chase after subterranean powers to make the body pulsate. 21 He died a few months later in Paris. Since 2001 Kine have been posing questions concerning the limits of cinema and the (non) materiality of film. Through a series of projections that develops, with no order, in miscellaneous spaces, the composition of their nucleus is revealed: the freedom to experiment, filming in Super 8, and the interest in a circle of creators which is constantly broadening. (TH, Ιούλιος 1978) Nuestra Señora de Paris / Super 8 (μεγέθυνση στα 16mm / blown up to 16mm) Σκηνοθεσία/direction, θέμα/ subject, κάμερα/ camerawork, μοντάζ/ editing, ζενερίκ/ credits, παραγωγή/ production: Téo Hernandez Από μία ιδέα τού/ Based on an idea by Juan Blanco Ηχητική μπάντα / Soundtrack: Jakobois Με τον/ With Gaël Badaud Έγχρωμο/ Color, ηχητικό/ sound, 22 Ταχύτητα προβολής/ Frame rate: 18 καρέ ανά δευτερόλεπτο/ 18 frames per second Ο Téo Hernandez αναπλάθει κινηματογραφικά τον καθεδρικό ναό της Παναγίας των Παρισίων, κατασκευάζοντας από τα επιμέρους στοιχεία του ναού (όψεις, εσωτερικό, βιτρό) μία χρωματική δίνη μέσα από τεχνικές μεθόδους που έχει ήδη εξερευνήσει στις προηγούμενες ταινίες του: η χορογραφημένη κίνηση της κινηματογραφικής μηχανής Super 8 σε συνδυασμό με το γρήγορο μοντάζ συντελούν σε μια θραυσματική εικονοποιία. (TH) Salomé 1976 / Super 8 (1982 / μεγέθυνση στα 16mm / blown up to 16mm) Σκηνοθεσία/direction, θέμα/ subject, κάμερα/ camerawork, μοντάζ/ editing, σκηνικά/ sets, κοστούμια/ costumes, φωτισμοί/ lighting, ηχητική μπάντα/ soundtrack, ζενερίκ/ credits, παραγωγή/ production: Téo Hernandez Μουσική/ Music: Agustin Lara, Elvira Rios, Mahalia Jackson, Sophie Tucker Με τους/ With: Monica Carpiaux, Mona Thomas, Carlos Palacio, Michel Nedjar Έγχρωμο/ Color, ηχητικό/ sound, 65 Ταχύτητα προβολής/ Frame rate: 24 καρέ ανά δευτερόλεπτο/ 24 frames per second This film does not constitute the illustration of a historical narrative or a literary text, but rather constructs its body through the energy produced by its dynamic, as well as through the three basic elements: light, color and frame rate [n.b.: the film s original Super 8 version was screened at 4 different frame rates and ran to 70 ]. [ ] The film proposes a perception experience: by denying the use of elements of external analysis (psychological, moral, social, etc.) in order to justify its starting point, it creates its own body, which can only be traced through the transformation of the viewer s gaze, thus endangering his perception. The film offers the viewer a vision, blurred and different, [ ] which moves, shifts and looks not only at the light but also at the darkness; the colors do not function in terms of ordinary realism, but as visual impressions and symbolic tensions. [ ] The frame rate splits the concept of time as it is imposed by cinema. The music does not illustrate the film but rather proposes a counterpoint to the image, charting a parallel course which, at intervals, meets the linkage points/crystallizations of chains that provoke and reveal the endless interpretational possibilities of the image. (TH, July 1978) Nuestra Señora de Paris / Super 8 (μεγέθυνση στα 16mm / blown up to 16mm) Σκηνοθεσία/direction, θέμα/ subject, κάμερα/ camerawork, μοντάζ/ editing, ζενερίκ/ credits, παραγωγή/ production: Téo Hernandez Από μία ιδέα τού/ Based on an idea by Juan Blanco Ηχητική μπάντα / Soundtrack: Jakobois Με τον/ With Gaël Badaud Έγχρωμο/ Color, ηχητικό/ sound, 22 Ταχύτητα προβολής/ Frame rate: 18 καρέ ανά δευτερόλεπτο/ 18 frames per second Téo Hernandez attempts a filmic recreation of Notre-Dame de Paris, using the cathedral s separate sections (external views, the interior, the stained glass windows) to create a colorful whirlpool. This is achieved through the techniques he has already explored in his earlier films: the choreographed movement of the Super 8 camera combined with fast-paced editing result in a splintered iconopoeia. In the film s soundtrack, the counterpoint of religious songs and noises (power drills), processed by Jakobois, filmmaker and friend of Hernandez, reinforces the sense of the mystical experience created by the images. 4th notebook, 08/12/82. I saw the cathedral as a Sphinx, a cave, an Aztec pyramid. (TH) Κίνε 32 / VIDEODANCE 2007
