NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE WTC ΝΑΟΣ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ ΤΟΥ WTC Προσφιλείς Αδελφοί και Αδελφές εν Χριστώ, Στην Εορτή της Παγκόσμιας Υψώσεως του Τιμίου και Ζωοποιού Σταυρού, γιορτάζουμε την ανεύρεση του Τιμίου Σταυρού του Κυρίου μας από την Αγία Ελένη όταν εκείνη επισκέφθηκε την Ιερουσαλήμ το έτος 326 για να προσκυνήση τους Αγίους Τόπους που σχετίζονταν με την ζωή, την διακονία, την Σταύρωση και την Ανάσταση του Χριστού. Αφού διαβεβαιώθηκε ότι ήτο ο Τίμιος Σταυρός θεραπεύοντας μια ετοιμοθάνατη γυναίκα η οποία τον ακούμπησε, ο Σταυρός προσκυνήθηκε από την Αγία Ελένη και όλους τους παρευρισκομένους. Καθώς ο Πατριάρχης Μακάριος τον ανύψωσε για να τον δούν, αναφώνησαν όλοι «Κύριε ελέησον». Αυτό το ένδοξο και ευλογημένο γεγονός οδήγησε στην καθιέρωση της Εορτής της Υψώσεως του Τιμίου Σταυρού και στον ετήσιο εορτασμό της λυτρωτικής δυνάμεώς του ως συμβόλου της συμφιλιώσεως διά του Χριστού. Η στάση των πιστών κατά την ανεύρεση του Σταυρού και η ύψωσή του από τον Πατριάρχη απετέλεσαν γεγονότα χαράς και ευγνωμοσύνης προς τον Θεό. Καί ενώ νηστεύουμε την ημέρα αυτή σε αναγνώριση της θυσίας του Κυρίου μας επί του Σταυρού, ταυτοχρόνως την πανηγυρίζουμε ως ημέρα και εορτή η οποία προσφέρει μαρτυρία στον κόσμο της δυνάμεως της αγάπης του Θεού για μας. Υψώνουμε τον Σταυρό διότι ενώ χρησιμοποιήθηκε φαινομενικά ως μέσο μαρτυρίου και ατιμίας έφερε τιμή και δόξα στον Θεό. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως μέσο αφαιρέσεως της ζωής, αλλά κατέστη είσοδος στην αιωνιότητα. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως μέσο βίας, αλλά για τους πιστούς κατέστη όπλο αληθινής ειρήνης. Ο Σταυρός, σύμβολο πόνου και ήττας, διά του Χριστού κατέστη σύμβολο ελπίδος και θριάμβου. Αντί θανάτου, ο Κύριος, διά του Σταυρού, μας χάρισε ζωή και περίσσευμα ζωής. Στην εορτή αυτή, η ύψωση του Σταυρού αποτελεί ωραία και δυναμική μαρτυρία του Ευαγγελίου της αληθείας και της αγάπης. Αποτελεί ομολογία της δυνάμεως της χάριτος του Θεού και της σωτηρίας που προσφέρεται διά της πίστεως στον Χριστό. Αυτή η εορτή αποτελεί επίσης κλήση στον καθέναν από μας να στρέψουμε το βλέμμα και τα μάτια της ψυχής μας στον Σταυρό και να τον υψώσουμε για να τον δούν οι άλλοι. Υψώνουμε τον Σταυρό του Χριστού όταν δεν διστάζουμε ή φοβούμεθα να δηλώσουμε ότι είμαστε Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί σε οποιαδήποτε περίπτωση ή περιβάλλον βρεθούμε. Υψώνουμε τον Σταυρό όταν τα σπίτια και οι οικογένειές μας αποτελούν κατοικητήριο Χριστού. Υψώνουμε τον Σταυρό για να δούν όλοι τη δύναμη της πίστεως και της χάριτος όταν ζούμε σύμφωνα με τον τρόπο του Σταυρού, δηλαδή όταν κάνουμε θυσίες για το θέλημα του Θεού και τις ανάγκες των άλλων, όταν ζούμε με αγάπη και ταπεινότητα και όταν οι ζωές μας δείχνουν πάντοτε την οδό του Χριστού. Καθώς εορτάζουμε αυτή την Εορτή και σκεπτόμεθα την μαρτυρία του Σταυρού, προσφέρουμε τις προσευχές και υποστήριξή μας σαν ετήσια παράδοση στην αγαπημένη μας Θεολογική Σχολή του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Υψώνοντας τον Σταυρό και προσφέροντας μαρτυρία του Ευαγγελίου, η Σχολή του Τιμίου Σταυρού κατέχει σημαντικό ρόλο στη ζωή της Εκκλησίας και της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής μας. Σε αυτό το ιερό ίδρυμα αυτοί που σήκωσαν τον Σταυρό του Κυρίου μας και ακολούθησαν το κάλεσμά Του στην Αγία Ιερωσύνη και διακονία λαμβάνουν την καθοδήγηση και εκπαίδευση την οποία χρειάζονται για να φέρουν τον Σταυρό. Μέσα σε ένα περιβάλλον λατρείας και προσευχής, ακαδημαικής τελειότητος και ομονοίας εν Χριστώ, οι σπουδαστές έχουν την ευκαιρία να προσηλωθούν στον Σταυρό, να καλλιεργήσουν την πίστη και αφοσίωσή των, να βιώσουν την ελπίδα, την δύναμη και τον θρίαμβο τα οποία είναι άκρως απαραίτητα για μια ζωή διακονίας. Είθε να προσευχηθούμε ειδικά αυτή την ημέρα για τους σπουδαστές, το διδακτικό προσωπικό, το λοιπό προσωπικό, τους εφόρους και τους δωρητές της αγαπημένης μας Σχολής του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Σας παρακαλώ να προσφέρετε την υποστήριξή σας στη Σχολή μας και στους σημερινούς και μελλοντικούς φοιτητές θεολογίας από τις ενορίες σας. Σήμερα, ο Τίμιος και Ζωοποιός Σταυρός θα υψωθεί ενώπιόν μας στις Εκκλησίες όλου του κόσμου. Καθώς τον αντικρύζουμε, τον προσκυνούμε και δοξάζουμε τον Θεό για όλα όσα έχουν γίνει διά του Χριστού για τη σωτηρία μας, είθε να ανανεώσουμε τη δέσμευσή μας να υψώνουμε τον Σταυρό κάθε ημέρα στις ζωές μας. Διά του δώρου της δυνάμεως του Σταυρού και την χάρη του Θεού, είθε να δείξουμε στους άλλους την οδό προς τον Χριστό και την αιώνια ζωή. Exalt the Lord our God. Verse: The Lord reigns; let the people tremble. St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:18-24 BRETHREN, the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart." Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The Gospel of John 19:6-11, 13-20, 25-28, 30 At that time, when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him." The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer. Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?" Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin." When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King!" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. Then when Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

4 Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, we commemorate the finding of the holy Cross of our Lord by Saint Helen when she visited Jerusalem in the year 326 to venerate holy places related to the life, ministry, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. Confirmed as the Precious Cross by healing a dying woman who touched it, the Cross was venerated by Saint Helen and by all present, proclaiming Lord have mercy as Patriarch Makarios lifted it up for all to see. This glorious and blessed event led to the institution of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross and our annual celebration of its power of redemption and as a symbol of reconciliation through Christ. The response of the faithful to the finding of the Cross and its elevation by the Patriarch was filled with joy and thanksgiving to God; and while we fast on this day in recognition of the sacrifice made by our Lord on the Cross, it is a day and a celebration that offers a witness to the world of the power of God s love for us. We lift up the Cross because while it was used as an instrument of torture and indignity, it brought honor and glory to God. It was used as a means of ending life, but it became entrance to eternity. It was used as a violent weapon, but for believers it became a weapon of true peace. The Cross, a symbol of suffering and defeat, through Christ became a symbol of hope and victory. Instead of death, our Lord through the Cross brought us life and abundance of life. On this feast, the elevation of the Cross is a beautiful and mighty witness of the Gospel of truth and love. It is a testimony of the power of God s grace and of the salvation that is offered to all through faith in Christ. This feast is also a call to each of us to look to the Cross and to turn the eyes of our soul towards the Cross and to lift it up for others to see. We lift up the Cross of Christ when we are not hesitant or afraid to identify ourselves as Orthodox Christians in any context or environment. We lift up the Cross when our homes and families become a dwelling of Christ. We lift up the Cross for all to see the power of faith and grace when we live in the way of the Cross, that is when we sacrifice for the will of God and the needs of others, when we live in love and humility, and our lives constantly show the way to Christ. As we commemorate this Feast and reflect on the witness of the Cross, it is also our annual tradition to offer our prayers and support for our beloved Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. In lifting the Cross and offering a witness of the Gospel, our Schole of the Holy Cross has a vital role in the life of the Church and our Holy Archdiocese. At this sacred institution, those who have taken up the Cross of our Lord and followed His call to the Holy Priesthood and ministry receive the guidance and training they need to be bearers of the Cross. Within an environment of worship and prayer, of academic excellence, and of fellowship in Christ, students are able to look to the Cross, nurture their faith and commitment, and experience the hope, power and victory that is essential to a life of service. May we offer special prayers on this day for the students, faculty, staff, trustees and benefactors of our beloved School of Holy Cross, and please consider prayerfully your support for our Schole and for current and potential seminarians from your parish. Today, the Precious and Life-giving Cross will be raised before us in Churches throughout the world. As we look upon it, venerate it, and give glory to God for what has been accomplished through Christ for our salvation, may we renew our commitment to lift up the Cross each day of our lives. 7 Spr Ioannis (Yianni) Demenagas Life Scout Troop 715 Soles4Souls Ambassador I am collecting shoes to help in the fight against global poverty. My name is Ioannis (Yianni) Demenagas, I am a Boy Scout in Troop 715 currently working on becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest award a scout can attain. In order to do so, I must complete a service project. My project will be to organize a shoe drive in collaboration with Soles4Souls, a charity organization dedicated to giving shoes to the needy both here in the US and around the world. My goal is to collect 250 pair of shoes. Men s, women s and children s shoes will be collected. Soles4Souls is a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty. The organization advances its anti-poverty mission by collecting new and used shoes and clothes from individuals, schools, faith-based institutions, civic organizations and corporate partners, then distributing those shoes to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities. The organization has distributed over 50,000 new pairs of shoes to help Philippine victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Soles4Souls is committed to the highest standards of operating and governance, and holds a four-star rating with Charity Navigator. The connection between poverty and shoes is well-documented. The World Bank estimates that approximately 400 million children worldwide more than the entire U.S. population live in pronounced poverty. Millions of these children will grow up never having had a pair of shoes, resulting in significant ramifications for their health and well-being. Lacking proper footwear, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school. And tens of millions of these poverty-stricken, barefoot boys and girls will be infected with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases like hookworm, causing lasting suffering and lifelong debilitation.
