FROM THE PRESIDENT/FOUNDER Welcome to this special launch edition of the Food For Thought Netw ork (FFTN) new sletter, as we rejoice in five years of dedication to w omen s issues w ithin multicultural Melbourne, w hich is currently hosting the 2006 Commonw ealth Games. This edition is devoted to the history of the Netw ork, its vision, its grow th and outcomes. One aim of this new sletter is to encourage dialogue w ithin its readership and beyond. We look forw ard to hearing about your stories and including them in future editions. The FFTN w as born out of love, passion and motivation to make a real difference to women and their lives and to bridge the intergenerational gap w ithin the Greek Australian community. It has a developmental focus and it encourages everyone to learn by sharing know ledge, experiences, networks and supporting one another in order to improve our lives and ultimately creating a better w orld. We have a diverse and interesting membership comprising a myriad of professional and social backgrounds. The FFTN organises key speakers to present on current issues in a stimulating environment, over food and wine w hich encourages dialogue, raises aw areness and links people to relevant services and netw orks. An informal mentoring scheme exists w hich we hope to formalise in the near future. We believe that this netw ork is unique w ith a broader focus that any other professional association/ network and is relevant to every w oman. We hope that once you have attended one of our events you would be proud to invite along your Greek or non-greek friends; male or female to enhance cross-cultural dialogue and understanding. We encourage you to come along to our quarterly netw orking forums and the Philosophy Café. You can also access our site and contribute your feedback. We encourage you to officially register your membership to gain full access to all opportunities the netw ork provides. There are many people that have helped in the creation of this netw ork and I do not know where to start, as it would be impossible to mention everyone. In general I w ould like to thank all of the past committee members, presenters and members. How ever I w ould like to single out the former president of The Cultural Association of Hellenic Women of Victoria (CAHWV), Irene Papadopoulos. She has been unstintingly encouraging and supportive of my vision and journey to create an organisation such as the FFTN, w hich has evolved from the CAHWV and has attracted second and third generation w omen w ho recognise its relevance. Also a big thank you to Vicky Kyritsis ( first 3 years) and Eugenia Pavlopoulou (last four years), for their loyal support.thanks to Jean Mac Donald for her artw ork and desk top publishing. I w ould like to acknow ledge the support of the media in particular Neos Kos mos, SBS, 3XY radio, TA NEA, and Channel 31, in particular Rena Frangioudaki w ho have been instrumental in publicising the activities and outcomes of our netw ork to the w ider Greek Community. Last but not least, I w ould like to acknow ledge my husband Panagioti and my tw o children, Antonis and Areti, whose encouragement and support has been outstanding. In closing I w ould also like to w elcome Maria Zissimos, social researcher and first time mum, as our editor to the Netw ork and thank her for her initiativ e in putting this new sletter together and all of the contributors. We look forw ard to the next issue of the newsletter and the ongoing evolution as w e establish an editorial board w hich w ill advise on future editions. Varvara Ioannou Page2 2

FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to our first quarterly edition of the FFTN new sletter which coincides w ith the first FFTN netw orking forum for My name is Maria and I am the current editor of the FFTN e-newsletter. I first came across the FFTN w hile I w as scanning through the English edition of Neos Kos mos early in 2004, just after I had moved back from Brisbane, after four years. I loved the name Food For Thought and initially thought it w as a food connoisseur type of netw ork. Being a real food lover I thought that this was just the type of organisation I w ould love to get acquainted w ith. How ever soon enough I realised that Food For Thought offers a smorgasbord of stimulating dialogue about w omen s issues. We hope that the new sletter will encourage dialogue amongst our members in relation to issues covered in our netw orking forums and issues of interest to our members in general. We aim to include articles and contributions that cover the four key dimensions of our netw ork: Work, Family, Language and Culture and Health and Well-being. As this is our first edition it w ill be longer than subsequent editions in that it w ill include an outline of the netw ork s history as well as its guiding principles and operating guidelines, as w e celebrate five years in the ma king. This edition is a w ork in progress and w e would love your input on how we can improve the new sletter. Further more w e welcome your contributions and are keen to hear your stories about w ork, family and women s issues in general, so please send me your contributions on editor@fftn.org.au. In each edition a specific theme w ill be explored and w e w ill seek input from our readers. As the theme for the first seminar is on relationships, w e w ould love to receive relevant articles on this theme. We w ill publish some of these stories in the next edition in June in addition to a substantive piece on this theme. Until next time take care, Maria Zissimos DISCLAIMER Please note that the views expressed in this newsletter are those of the individual and not necessarily of FFTN members or its committee. We require that by submitting an article for an edition, you are giving us permission to use the article in future editions of the newsletter or magazine editions, giving full credit to its author(s). However we do not guarantee that all articles will be published. CONTRIBUTIONS If you wish to send an article to be included in the next edition of the newsletter, please the editor at editor@fftn.org.au by 29 th April Also please feel free to us your suggestions for topics that you would like us to consider for future FFTN functions and/or newsletter editions. 4 NETWORK HISTORY This is an edited version of a talk that Varvara Ioannou gave at a Conference entitled the Future of Community Organisations, Networks and Diasporas. web_images/varvarra%20iannou%20 (English).pdf The Food For Thought Netw ork (FFTN) w as founded by Varvara Ioannou in The rationale for the formulation of the FFTN w as based on Attendees at the inaugural FFTN seminar in May 2001 She also came to the realization that second and third generation Greek Australians have complex and varying needs that are influenced and sculptured by their home, social, professional and educational environments. These children are socialised and educated in a culture that puts emphasis on the individual, w here people are supposed to look after their ow n interests and those of the immediate family; hence individualis m prevails over collectivism. This is in contrast to Greece w here collectivism prevails. An example of this is the establishment of brotherhoods, associations, churches, Greek schools, by the first generation Greek Australians. The Australian born children of immigrants w ho, according to George Megalogenis, have achieved better educational and occupational outcomes than those w ith Australian born parents are caught betw een these tw o value systems and may feel that the organisations that their parents founded and worked hard to establish are no longer relevant to their needs in Australia. From left: Eugenia Pavlopoulou, Varvara Ioannou and Vicky Kyritsis Varvara s experience w ithin the ethno-specific sector and her research findings. Varvara has had extensive involvement w ith a variety of organisations and netw orks both in the Greek community and mainstream Australia and she has many insights into w hat has worked in the past and w hat can be improved. Armed w ith these insights she conducted a research study one year prior to the launch of the FFTN to address w hether the existing ethnospecific organisations were relevant to current and future second and third generation Greek Australians. This research was qualitative and w eb based and w as prepared for a talk at a conference. The research focused on the status and efficacy of ethno-specific organizations amongst Australian born children of Greek immigrants. Varvara s experience w ithin the ethno-specific sector had made her very aw are that culture is evolving, not static and that the core values for the Greeks in the 1980 s (namely language, religion and family ) w ere not necessarily applicable to second and third generation Greek Australians. NETWORK VISION To make a difference and build understanding through supportive and encouraging Networks. Page4 4

NETWORK HISTORY (Cont ) Varvara then considered the socio-economic and political impact on people s ability to participate in community organizations w ithin tw o age groups; & the w hich are outlined below : years Young people at this stage of their lives are still discovering their identity and/or they may be more interested in having a good time, going out, dancing, socializing w ith friends, traveling, getting involved in relationships, finding partners, paying HECS fees, saving to buy a house etc Supporting them during this stage is recommended, such as the extension of the programs for youth to visit Greece and at least get an updated view of today s Greek society and culture this may counteract any outdated view s they may have of their parents homeland Encourage attendance to Greek Film Festivals and other music and sporting events years (couples and families) Becoming parents changes this group s needs. As mixed marriages are on the increase there is an evaluation of the value system they w ould like to pass on to the next generation. Earlier unresolved identity crisis issues may reappear Existing Greek Australian organizations may not be as relevant to families from mixed marriages. Organisations that address cultural issues and are in tune w ith the new realities of life w ill be more relevant and desirable Empty nesters have more time to get involved in organizations in community organisations After talking to a number of second and third generation w omen and men w hom she had met through her work and various conferences and seminars in mainstream Australia, Varvara developed a model (a year in the making) for moving forw ard, w hich she put to the test by inviting people to provide feedback and get involved. Her motivators w ere; Her social conscience Her involvement w ith a variety of organisations and netw orks both in the Greek community and mainstream Australia. Her family history; Varvara comes from a family w here her father and uncle w ere community leaders. She said that her house was always full of people and this was a source of learning for me as I was growing up. Her personal need to be intellectually stimulated Her interest in doing leadership differently Pride in her bi-cultural heritage and w anting to see this enhanced. She said I like to encourage others to be stimulated and learn more about our Greek heritage and bring their knowledge and experiences back to the community Her passion for humanity I am devoted to human rights and diversity and constantly try to break barriers for all sorts of people to succeed. I want to make a difference Page5 5

The Netw ork s guiding principles and operating guidelines are outlined below : GUIDING PRINCIPLES We have a clear purpose and vision and are a positive organisation. We are a modern and democratic, not for profit community based organisation. OPERATING GUIDELINES We conduct quality events current issues with an emphasis on personal and professional development. We are usually run on Friday nights over food (3 hours max) - separate room in a Greek restaurant. We are an all inclusive group that w elcomes diversity w ithin its participants and everyone is welcome. We aim to raise aw areness of work and family issues and provide links to services available in the mainstream community. Our functions are affordable and designed to cover cost of function. There is a strong opportunity for networking. Discussion is conducted in both Greek and English (person speaking chooses the language they feel most comfortable w ith). We have a strong focus on issues pertaining to language/culture & health/w ell-being. We engage quality speakers w ho donate their time. Our key focus is on self development. PHILOSOPHY CAFE We use technology to communicate w ith our members via . The Netw ork now has a web age,. It also informs the public about its events via the Greek media. One of the most positive highlights for Andrea, Stamatia and I w ere the philosophy classes we attended in 2005 organised by the Food for Thought Netw ork. Andrea and myself w ork in a florist shop in the CBD. Although it can be hectic, w e alw ays manage to find the time for passionate philosophical heritage discourse draw ing heavily on our Greek philosophical heritage, but also on w orld issues, politics, religion and spirituality. So, w hen we saw the announcement in the English edition of Neos Kosmos, we were very excited. Classes were held on the last Wednesday of the each month ( May to October). From the very first day we knew it would fulfil our expectations, so we invited my daughter along. The venue of choice w as Elements Café on Lonsdale St. It w as very convenient. We gathered around the back of the restaurant w ith Dr.Vitkos at the helm and covered a different topic each month draw ing from prominent ancient Greek philosopher s; but as the evening progressed the discussion w ould open for all to participate and eventually ending in a lot of questions. The venue w as conducive to a night of philosophical discourse, w ith food and beverage on offer. The people attending w ere very eclectic, men and w omen of verifying ages, backgrounds and profession. The venue provided a more informal, social atmosphere as opposed to the formal class room environment, and most people felt relaxed enough to engage in the evening s discussion. In those moments of human interaction, w e felt w e enriched our capacity to think, listen and share a broad spectrum of thoughts and ideas. Dr.Vitkos is a wonderful man to listen to; he show s great patience and insight in the fields of philosophy. The classes had a very positive influence on my daughter Stamatia, w ho is a student and decided to take philosophy as a VCE subject. As for Andrea and myself w e look forward to March How ever until then we wait w ith great anticipation and continue to indulge in our favourite past time; philosophical discourse of course! The next Philosophy Café will be held on March , (the last Wednesday of the month), at Elements By Andrea Costi, Amelia and Stamatia Spanos Café in Lonsdale Street. 7 CREATE THE YEAR YOU INTEND - By Kalli Poulos 2006 has w ell and truly started w ith a bang not a whimper! I hear friends and clients alike saying that January w as not the lazy month w e have grown accustomed to, and that they are busy, busy, busy. It is very easy to get caught up in the busy-ness and be carried into the year rather than taking stock and consciously choosing a w ay forward. At this time, make a little space in your life and contemplate: What made the most impact on your life last year? What w ere your peak moments, w orthy of celebration? What w ere your biggest challenges? What do you really w ant for the 12 months to come? What will make the difference? HEART: We are most pow erfully motivated w hen our thoughts and actions are aligned to our heart-felt desires, our 'soul's dreams'. What w ould inspire you and make you 'come alive'? What w ould have the greatest impact on your life? What is it you may not be w illing to declare out loud, in case it does not happen, or because you feel you 'should' not w ant it (often based on adopted values, not your ow n). ENERGY: Your passion is the driver here and is fueled by clarity on w hy you w ant this. What w ould achieving this mean to you? What w ould open up as a result? How important is this to you? Pursue your soul's dreams, not your mind s. Alan Cohen RESOURCES: Know what resources you have available (and identify potential obstacles and how you w ill handle them) before you start on the journey. You w ill have instant support and safety nets! What resources (inner resources, friends, your coach, community) can you draw on right now, and also at times w hen it is hard to keep going? TRACKING: Take stock as you go along, to review and re-align to your outcomes. Are you on track? Are you still as excited about and committed to your original destination? Has something become more important? This brings us back to... 'Heart'! Enjoy the journey, and may your year be as you intend. "Don't ask what the world needs - ask what makes you come alive and go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." Howard Thurman Kalli is an accredited personal and executive coach.she delights in w orking w ith people to integrate successful business and professional outcomes w ith personal mastery and fulfillment. AWARENESS: Awareness of what has stopped you in the past is a clue to future success. Was it negative self-talk, others' opinions, self-defeating w ays of thinking or behaving? What do you need to change to support the journey forward.

PROFESSIONAL NEWS Four of our members have been successful in securing funds for various research projects. In 2003, Cypriot-born academic and w riter Erma Vassiliou received a grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to write her own biography. Er ma's autobiography entitled "The Water Drummer" (appearing w ith a different title in Greek), focuses on her life and times and delves into the emotions she experienced on her amazing journey. We congratulate Georgina Tsolidis w ho has secured a two year research project funded by the Australian Research Council. This project w ill explore diasporic identity through the Melbourne Greek community. The focus is on young people and various types of schooling. Congratulations to Elizabeth Gertsakis for her creative fellowship at the State Library of Victoria to research and develop an exhibition on the 19th Century illustrated newspapers in Victoria. The title of her research is Horror, Calamity and "Graphtos" in Victoria Popular Illustrated New s in Melbourne, have direct benefits for emergency service organisations in Australia, assisting them to adapt to new profesional and equity imperatives. Georgia Prattis We also congratulate Georgia Prattis w ho is leading an industry/university collaborative project funded by the Australian Research Council. The project is titled 'The making of a firefighter: recruitment, gender and cultural identity and professional person in a metropolitan fire station'. The research offers new understanding of how the gendered and cultural professional identity of recruit firefighters is shaped by the regimes of selection, training and transition to w ork, in a metropolitan fire station. The research explores w hether women's relational and communication capacities are developed or discouraged in a masculinist, anglo dominated w ork setting such as firefighting. The project w ill enhance understanding of w hy some occupations remain white anglo male dominated despite 20 years of policy and program level change initiatives. It w ill Page10 10

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY? By Georgina Tsolidis. Each year, all over the world, on the 8 th of March there are celebrations to mark International Women s Day (IWD). These take many forms and increasingly the day is marked within schools, communities and workplaces. The 8th of March is an occasion when women can celebrate their achievements towards equality. IWD also provides us with an opportunity to reflect on what else needs to be done to make our own lives and the lives of our daughters more meaningful and less oppressive. As the mother of a teenage daughter and someone who works with young people, I am struck by their belief that gender equality has been achieved. Yet according to Summers (2003) the position of women in Australian society has deteriorated since the 1990s. Many women are facing serious economic hardship. More women than ever before are working part-time and not necessarily by choice. Women s total average weekly earnings are 66% of men s. Women s reliance on welfare has increased, particularly as a result of the number of sole parent families headed by women. There are more divorced women over 60 than widows and many do not have access to superannuation and are not yet eligible for the pension. Childcare remains expensive and difficult to access. Few women occupy positions of responsibility with fewer than 10% of board and senior executive positions in large Australian companies filled by women. In 2001, 13,500 women reported to police that they had experienced sexual assault. Authorities estimate that the number would be higher than 90, 000 if we include cases not reported to police. Domestic violence continues to be a significant issue, with over 1 million reported cases in Women are still having to justify and fight for the right to safe and accessible contraception and abortion. It seems that despite many of these issues being central to the campaign for women s equality undertaken in the 1960s and 1970s, there is little we can take for granted. Much of what we assumed as won remains in question. IWD provides a time to reflect on this situation. One of the major obstacles it seems, is optimism the heartfelt belief by so many young women that there is no problem. There is a risk that IWD will become simply a time for celebration, rather than a time for the political action that marks its character. IWD dates back to 1908 in USA, 1910 internationally, and 1928 in Australia. It has a strong tradition of political struggle and strike action. IWD is associated with the great political unrest at the turn of the 20 th century. During this period women in industrial nations were entering the paid workforce, which was sex segregated. They worked mainly in textiles, manufacturing and domestic services, earning low wages under appalling conditions. Trade unions were developing and women were campaigning for the vote. Revolutionary movements in Europe were strong. In 1907 some 20 30,000 women in the textile industry took strike action in the USA. In 1917 similar numbers of women in the same industry took strike action in Petrograd. The events in the USA led to the first IWD march being held in 1908, which called for the women s vote and economic and social reforms. IWD became international when it was adopted by the second International Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen. The 50 th anniversary of IWD was marked in 1960 in Copenhagen where it began. The United Nations declared 1975 International Women s Year and gave IWD official recognition. This became a prompt for Government activity around women s issues, including in Australia with the Whitlam Government funding a range of reforms. The women s movement has never been a uniform movement. Difference within it has commonly reflected the various priorities of groups of women based on different class, race and ethnic background. As part of International Women s Year the report But I wouldn t want my wife to work here was published. It gave voice to the experiences of migrant women who were, on the whole, working in factories at the time. These women described appalling pay and conditions, lack of childcare and support to learn English and neglect of their conditions by unions. This was a landmark report and triggered a campaign to broaden Australian feminism to include ethnic minority women and their priorities. The needs of migrant and refugee women remain urgent. Additionally, we must consider how women born here or who migrated at an early age, have needs specific to their situation. Minority women, in various ways and to various degrees, can experience cultural alienation, prejudice, stereotyping and lack of appropriate recognition. In the workforce, in education and as they support children and aging parents, they can also lack culturally appropriate institutional support. IWD has meant many different things to different women. It has been marked in various ways. Nonetheless it remains a good way of remembering what has gone before us in the struggle for equality and remains an important time for reflecting on what can still be done. 12 PHILIPPA S STORY FAMILY VIOLENCE IS EVERYONE S ISSUE In every issue we will be featuring real stories from real women about their lives and how they coped with various challenges they encountered throughout their life s journey. In this issue we feature Philippa s story, a moving story which was orated at a FFTN seminar in October Philippa is sharing her story to raise awareness. Hi, my name is Philippa, and for the sake of other women and other families, I m here to share a little of my life with you. I have a degree in Horticultural Science, and am a Key Account Executive for Amgrow Garden King, the second largest garden products company in Australia next to Yates. I have been studying part time for the past four years, and have just completed a Graduate Certificate of Marketing, finishing at the top of my year level at the same time as being the highest achieving salesperson in the state - and raising three teenagers single-handedly! My daughter is in her third year of a degree in linguistics at Monash University and performs in amateur musicals, my older boy is in Year 12 at the academically prestigious Melbourne High School, and my younger son is achieving well at Cheltenham Secondary College. The two older children have undertaken charity work for St Vincent de Paul and Very Special Kids in the last two years, and I am extremely proud of all of them for their highly developed sense of compassion and community. On the surface, it would seem that we are a family of academic high achievers and well-balanced citizens, yet for all my intelligence, I could not even realise five years ago that I was i n a relationship cl assed as domesti c violence ; i t took a Southern Family Life counsellor to help me see that. Standing here today, it seems incredible that not so long ago, I was in a violent relationship where I was barely able to hold down my job, and was verbally and physically attacked on a regular basis. Picture me being punched repeatedly in the head, or hit across the mouth so that my teeth are chipped. Picture me being pushed face down, onto a concrete path, cracking my ribs in the process. Picture me being cornered in a bathroom with a samurai sword held 3cm from my bare stomach. Or worse still, picture me in the front hallway, after my partner has pushed his way inside my home, being head-butted in the face, pushed into the wall and onto the floor, with my sons, then aged 9 and 12, crying and pleading please don t hurt Mama, please don t hurt Mama. This was indeed a chapter in my life which has affected me profoundly; after a gentle upbringing in an average family, I never imagined that I would be the victim of domestic violence, or that my children would be exposed to its horror. The chilling fact is that at any time during a number of violent episodes, my partner could have lost a little more control and killed me, leaving my children orphans. They would have lost one parent to cancer, and the other to domestic violence. So how did it happen to me? How does it happen to any woman? Well, let me tell you: it does not happen because we are stupid, and it does not happen because we are weak. It may happen because we trust too much, or because we want to please others, but it certainly happens because some men recognise that they can have power over us and control us. Violence is a common and effective means of control over women. And please don t think that violence occurs on the first date, and then we go back for more. With these men, there is a very common pattern of behaviour: they treat a woman well in the beginning, to gain her trust and make her believe that she has found a person who loves her. Then they go about systematically isolating her from her friends, her family, and eventually, her whole support network. All the while, they ensure that she becomes increasingly dependent on them for friendship, emotional support, money, and maintenance of her self esteem. At the point where the woman is completely dependent, the man knows that he can treat her as badly as he wishes, and really mess with her mind. He knows that she won t try to leave because she has no money, nowhere to go, and no-one to turn to. He knows that the shame of domestic violence will prevent her from telling people about her situation, and if there are children involved, he knows that she is even further trapped. In short, this is a blueprint plan that can be applied to many women, in many rel ati onships, in many parts of our society, from the boardroom to the factory floor, and the sooner we accept it as fact, the sooner we can save families from destruction. Ultimately, it was out of love for my children that I found the inner strength to end my violent relationship. As I had anticipated, finally saying no to my partner brought on a particularly violent and terrifying episode when I had to ask a passing motorist to call the Police for help. I was out delivering junk mail that night when my partner attempted to run me down in his car, having left death threats on my phone during the day. From there began a long process involving many trips to the Magistrate s Court and more to the Police station, to ensure my safety and that of my children. This was also the point at which I had to confess to my employer that I was in a violent relationship. Although I had already identified him as a caring and tolerant family man who would hopefully understand my situation of distress, Page12 12

PHILIPPA S STORY FAMILY VIOLENCE IS EVERYONE S ISSUE (Cont ) I was nonetheless worried about telling him. Thankfully, he did not judge me. He showed compassion and concern, allowing me to take time off to attend court as required, or simply to have a break. He was actually the one adult left in my life who made me feel valued, and that became the starting point for my rehabilitation towards where I am now. My employer s compassion went beyond an employer employee relationship; his understanding occurred at a human to human level, enabling me to maintain my dignity and never feel that my value and integrity as a worker and an individual was ever questioned. During the worst 18 months of my relationship, it became almost impossible for me to work effectively. My partner was suspicious and jealous, and constantly checked on me via mobile phone, which was a tool of trade as a sales representative. I would receive up to 20 calls a day from him, asking where I was and whom I was seeing. He was constantly pressuring me to work from home, telling me to make phone calls to customers instead of visiting them. When I was out on the road making service calls, he would ring me before, during and after these calls, checking on what I was doing and how long I was spending with customers. If I dared to switch the phone off or leave it in the car so that he couldn t contact me, there would inevitably be an argument about it, with an accompanying physi cal assaul t of some sort. In these ci rcumstances, I was working under extreme levels of stress at all times. In truth, he would have liked to see me kept within the confines of my home, without seeing anyone. I was unable even to make a quick trip to the supermarket without his permission or him accompanying me and I was forbidden to enter the schoolyard when I dropped my boys off at school, because he didn t want me meeting anyone, let alone making friends with people who might help me to see that the life I was living was not normal. Domestic violence had other implications for my working life: I suffered a variety of stress-related illnesses whi ch reduced my productivity, I needed time to see counsellors and solicitors, and naturally, I was unable to attend sales promotions or work functions because of my jealous partner. Despite the stress, my work became the one area of my life where I had some small chance of getting away from my partner and acting independently. If I had been sacked or forced to resign due to pressure from him, my life and that of my children would have totally fallen apart. I would have had no income, no car, no assets and no support system whatsoever, let alone the self esteem required to pick myself back up from that situation and become reemployed. Thanks to the understanding nature of my boss, I was able to maintain my job, doing as much as I felt capable of at the time. This lack of pressure from him gave me the breathing space I needed for recovery, and work became an area of partial normality. My work helped replenish some of my self esteem, as well as allowing me to survive financially. Had I not had that, I may well have drifted back into the relationship, as I had done twice before. At one time when my partner threatened to ring my boss and make libellous statements about me, I warned my boss about it and his reply was I won t even give him the chance to speak. This basic act of support on his part had the effect of me feeling protected, safe and valued and instilled in me such a sense of gratitude that I became even more committed to my job and determined to help my company succeed. Thanks to a small ad for Southern Family Life in a school newsletter some years before, I knew where to turn for free or low-cost counselling support. This counselling helped me to deal with what I had already endured, and even with what occurred afterwards, because it is hard for violent partners to fully relinquish their control. Domesti c viol ence i s a very messy busi ness and these relationshi ps commonly take a while to be resol ved. In my case, I had to deal with breaches of intervention orders and other annoyances for a further 18 months before I was finally and fully rid of my partner. As part of the counselling process, I was given some literature about abusive and controlling relationships which made me realise that I was not alone in what I had experienced. The realisation that many other women, of all different backgrounds, had shared and continue to share my experiences gave me enormous strength; I was not dealing with what I perceived to be my own deficiencies, but I was part of some kind of epidemic, so to speak. Although my boss had been compassionate and understanding, I still felt too much shame to discuss with him my need for counselling. This caused me even more stress as I often had to have sessions during work hours and didn t tell him that I was taking the time to do so. However, this continued counselling support accelerated my recovery, enabling me to regain my strength and to set new goals which centred upon improving myself as a parent and as an employee. Gaining the confi dence to take up a course of study i n Business Marketing has made me a far more valuable and highly skilled employee today, and I firmly believe that my contributions in the workplace of late have more than made up for my lost productivity of several years ago when I was not in control of my life. I cannot stress enough that for a woman in a violent relationship, knowing where to turn when the time is right can be crucial to her success in getting away, and the provision of cheap or free counselling, in accessible areas, with organisations that are geared toward helping families, can be the lifeline that can help her and her children survi ve. It makes good business sense to hold on to employees rather than lose them, but apart from the that, it is the caring and compassionate thing to do to help when you see someone in need. Response in the workplace is so dependent on beliefs and attitudes, and these attitudes and beliefs will only be positive when the topic of relationship violence is discussed openly and intelligently. The more that we can all talk about and understand domestic violence, the more women can be helped. These issues must be talked about, for silence is the perpetrators strongest ally. Page13 13

PHILIPPA S STORY FAMILY VIOLENCE IS EVERYONE S ISSUE

Page15 15
