2 MELINA MERCOURI Melina Mercouri began as a great actress of the Greek cinema and theatre. During the years of junta when she was self-exiled in Paris, she fought in order to make known to everyone in the world what happened in Greece. Later, when she was minister of culture in the Greek government, she began a big movement to have the Greek monuments of ancient history, which rightfully belong to us, returned to Greece. Among the monuments that were stolen by Thomas Bruce (Lord Elgin) from the Acropolis is a Caryatid. Caryatids were six beautiful sculptures of women which by their head they supported Erechtheion s roof. It is said, that Lord Elgin attempted to still one more Caryatid but was frightened from cries that were heard from the statues of the remaining Daughters which were crying for their missing sister Where are you sister? What have they done to you? In our country, as well as in the rest of the world, she is admired because she was very important as a leader, an actress and a singer. I believe that she is also popular in England because of the movement for the return of the monuments as a lot of English people support it. And I believe that she sang very well and she has made very nice movies. Finally March the 6th, the day of death of Melina Mercouri, has been designated by UNESCO as a global day of culture in which the prize "Melina Mercouri" is awarded, as a prize of cultural offer. This award is given since 1997 every two years, to people or organizations for their efforts to safeguard the cultural monuments of humanity. SAKIS ROUVAS Anastasios "Sakis" Rouvas II (Greek: Αναστάσιος "Σάκης" Ρουβάς, pronounced[sakis rouvas]; 5 January 1972), often referred to mononymously as Sakis, is a Greek musician, television and film artist, businessman, and former pole vaulter who is one of the most successful and influential entertainers of all time in Greece and Cyprus. Beginning a career as a member of the national athletics team, Rouvas commenced a musical career in 1991 and became one of Greece's first pop performers; widely recognized as the genre's main performers to this day, he is credited with breaking cultural and generational barriers and aiding in the popularization of Western music genres in Greece and Cyprus. After five commercially successful albums with PolyGram Greece, Rouvas signed with Minos EMI in Having been a notable artist in the Balkans for years, Rouvas embarked on multiple projects abroad and represented his country in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 and 2009 and copresented the 2006 contest, while also venturing into film and television. Rouvas has contributed to several philanthropic organizations and his influence went beyond the arts as he became nationalized into a cultural icon. He is the most commercially successful entertainer in Greece, having expanded his empire more than any other celebrity. Amongst Rouvas' other achievements include multiple recognized awards including six Arion Music Awards, 12 MAD Video Music Awards more than any other male artist, an MTV Europe Music Award, and a World Music Award number-one albums and singles that have all achieved certifications of gold or higher, and sales of an estimated two million records as of 2008, making him one of Greece's best-selling music artists in history. Rouvas' distinct musical and performance style has influenced other artists, while his contributions to music have made him a prominent part of popular culture for nearly two decades. In 2009, Down Town named him "Entertainer of the Decade", while in 2010 Forbes listed him as the third most powerful and influential celebrity in Greece and top ranked singer. MARIA TRITA Senior C Real English,Geraka A Brief History of Alexander the Great When Alexander, the oldest son of Philip, King of Macedon, was born in 356BC, the greatest empire in the world was the Persian Empire. The great Persian conqueror Cyrus had conquered lots of smaller countries to put together the Persian Empire more than a hundred years earlier. Macedon was a small kingdom on the edge of the Persian Empire. Alexander's father Philip was a strong and ambitious king. He wanted more power than just his own little kingdom of Macedon. Philip spent most of his life conquering the cities of Greece, to his south. By the time Alexander was eighteen years old, he led the left wing of his father's army at Chaeronea, the last big battle to conquer Greece. Two years later, when Alexander was twenty years old, a guardsman killed his father, Philip, and Alexander became king of Macedon and Greece. Soon Alexander decided to be like his heroes Cyrus and Achilles and conquer the Persian Empire for himself. In 335 BC, Alexander crossed over the Hellespont into the Persian Empire, marching his army south along the Mediterranean coast towards Egypt, conquering all the cities along his way (most cities actually just surrendered when they saw him coming). After Alexander conquered Egypt, he finally met and defeated the Persian king Darius III in battle at the battle of Issus in 333 BC. Darius ran away, and Alexander continued on through Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) into Persia itself (modern Iran). When Alexander finished conquering Persia, he burned Darius' great palace at Persepolis: only ruins are left today. Then he marched further east with his army up into the mountains of Bactria (modern Afghanistan). Even this was still land that had been inside the old Persian Empire, and so Alexander was determined that he would conquer it too. Bactria was hard to conquer, because small groups of Bactrian soldiers could hide in the mountains and Alexander had to fight them little by little. But Alexander gradually made alliances with the local kings. He married a Bactrian princess, Roxane, to help seal the deal, and he settled a lot of his Greek and Macedonian soldiers in new cities in Bactria to watch out for rebellions there. Then Alexander moved south, across the Kyber Pass into what is now Pakistan. Here he fought North Indian kings and queens Cleophis and Porus and others, and his armies met elephants for the first time. Still he was within the boundaries of the old Persian Empire - but now he had finally finished conquering it all. Should he go on even further east, across the Indus River? When Alexander reached the end of the old Persian Empire, he turned back. He did not go further east into India. Historians who were there say that this is because Alexander's soldiers refused to follow him any further east - the end of the Persian Empire was far enough for them. But the way back to Babylon, through the Gedrosia Desert (in modern Pakistan) wasn't such a good time either. There was almost no water or food, and three out of every four of Alexander's soldiers died before the army finally reached Babylon (in modern Iraq). Once he was back in Babylon, Alexander began to try to put together his Greek and Macedonian people with his Persian people to make a truly diverse empire. Like Cyrus before him, Alexander thought that respecting religious and cultural freedom and diversity was the best way to hold an empire together. Alexander ordered many of his soldiers to marry Persian women, as he himself had already done. He also put Persian men along with Greek men in important government jobs (even Alexander didn't allow women in the government). But while he was staying in Babylon, in 323 BC, Alexander caught a fever. Nobody knows exactly what the disease was maybe malaria or typhoid. The fever killed him in a few days, when Alexander was only 33 years old. He left no sons (though Roxane was pregnant), and his generals soon divided up his empire among themselves. This brief history of the life of Alexander the Great shows us an ingenious general with a sharp mind and an innovative spirit. He influenced the course of many civilizations around the world and has remained in our hearts and our history as one of the greatest men that have ever lived. 3 An Everlasting Love Once upon a time there was a girl and a boy who were very much in love. One night the boy was looking outside the window while he was smoking. It was a project undertaken by King Ludwing. The foundation stone for the castle was laid in 1869 and this marked the official beginning of the building process. The castle was considered completed in 1880 and King Ludwing moved in in This castle is one of the rare world structures that is being seriously considered for the new 7 wonders of the modern world along with the Statue of Liberty and Great Wall of China. The Bran castle Sarantopoulou Baleria Senior B Bran Castle, situated near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Brasov, is a national monument and landmark in Romania. The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, on DN73. Commonly known as Dracula Castle, it is marketed as the home of the titular character in Bram Stoker s Dracula. There is however, no evidence that Stocker knew anything about this castle, which has only tangential associations with Vlad III, voivode of Wallachia, the putative inspiration for Dracula. The castle is now a museum open to tourists, displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Marie. Tourists can see the interior individually or by a guided tour. The underlying purpose of the practice of yoga is to reunite the individual self with the absolute, pure Consciousness or Truth, freeing the human spirit from ignorance; the illusion of time, space and causation. At its origin, Yoga was a way of life, a culture and a lifestyle which encompassed not just techniques, practices or ideas, but also eating habits, social interaction, and work. Modern Yoga is more of an organised, scientific system of techniques based on Physiology, Psychology and Philosophy derived from Indian culture. The keys to the practice of yoga are Asanas, Pranayama and Meditation. Asanas are basically postures which benefit the body and its inner organs in order to keep it in good health. Apart from that, the good condition of the body guarantees a good mental condition, for Yoga considers man as a mind-body unity. Pranayama stands for breathing techniques which appear to balance Prana, the bio-energy within every human being. And last but not least, Meditation, a term often misunderstood. Meditation is not the practice of sitting cross legged with your eyes closed while chanting Om. It is a state of mind. Scientists have observed that there are basically 4 states of mind depending upon the frequency of mind waves. These states are alpha, beta, gamma and theta. Beta is our normal waking state, which is characterized by brain rhythms of 14 cycles per second and above, the state in which we live and perform all our day-toactivities. The higher the brain day activity becomes, the greater the stress factor. On the other hand, alpha state is a very relaxed state of mind, characterized by brain rhythms of between 7 and 14 cycles per second. The big difference between operating in alpha and beta is that in beta our mind is in control of us, whereas in alpha we are in control of our mind. It is a state of "aware relaxation" and it gives us numerous advantages: it improves concentration, clarity of thinking, decision making, learning ability and memory. Moreover it lowers the levels of cortisol (a steroid hormone which is released in response to stress) and keeps us healthier by boosting our immune system. It is in that state of mind where the illusions of every day life, created in our brain, can be extinguished and our true nature can be revealed, delivering states of compassion, respect and creativity to stand in for anger, fear and devastation. 4 4 ΜΑΘΗΣΙΑΚΕΣ ΥΣΚΟΛΙΕΣ : ΠΟΙΑ ΠΑΙ ΙΑ ΑΦΟΡΑ; Οι µαθησιακές δυσκολίες απασχολούν ένα σηµαντικό ποσοστό µαθητών, γονέων και εκπαιδευτικών. Ο όρος µαθησιακές δυσκολίες είναι αρκετά γενικός και συχνά προβληµατίζει τους γονείς, ιδιαίτερα όταν τα παιδιά τους δυσκολεύονται στο σχολείο ή στο διάβασµα. Ο όρος αυτός όµως δεν πρέπει να χρησιµοποιείται για κάθε παιδί µε χαµηλές σχολικές επιδόσεις. Με τον όρο παιδιά µε µαθησιακές δυσκολίες εννοούµε τα παιδιά εκείνα που παρουσιάζουν διαταραχές σε µία ή περισσότερες από τις βασικές ψυχογνωστικές διαδικασίες που είναι απαραίτητες για την κατανόηση και τη χ ρήση του λόγου τόσο σε προφορικό όσο και σε γραπτό επίπεδο. Αυτές οι διαταραχές µπορούν να παρουσιαστούν ως µειωµένη ικανότητα του παιδιού όσον αφορά την ακουστική προσοχή, την ανάγνωση και γραφή, την ορθογραφία, την ανάκληση πληροφοριών, την οµιλία καθώς επίσης και την συµπεριφορά. Οι κυριότερες µαθησιακές δυσκολίες είναι η δυσλεξία, η δυσγραφία, η δυσαναγνωσία, η δυσαριθµησία, η διαταραχή λόγου και η διάσπαση προσοχής. Αξίζει στο σηµείο αυτό να αναφερθεί ότι τα παιδιά που αντιµετωπίζουν µαθησιακές δυσκολίες έχουν φυσιολογική νοηµοσύνη. Οι αιτίες των µαθησιακών δυσκολιών είναι συνήθως απόρροια διαφόρων παραγόντων. Μία από τις σηµαντικότερες αιτίες εµφάνισης µαθησιακής δυσκολίας είναι ο γονιδιακός συντελεστής, δηλαδή η κληρονοµικότητα. Πολύ σηµαντική επίσης είναι η ψυχολογική και σωµατική κατάσταση της µητέρας κατά τη διάρκεια της κύησης. Έχει παρατηρηθεί ότι εάν η µητέρα καπνίζει, καταναλώνει αλκοόλ ή είναι αγχώδης κατά τη διάρκεια της εγκυµοσύνης, οι πιθανότητες το παιδί να παρουσιάσει µαθησιακή δυσκολία αυξάνει. Επιπλέον, σύµφωνα µε πρόσφατες επιστηµονικές µελέτες, σηµαντικό ρόλο στην εµφάνιση δυσκολιών παίζει ο πρόωρος τοκετός, το χαµηλό βάρος κατά τη γέννηση του παιδιού καθώς επίσης κάποια προβλήµατα παρουσιάζονται στα δίδυµα, τα τρίδυµα κτλ. Η κατάσταση βέβαια χειροτερεύει εάν το παιδί µεγαλώνει σε ένα περιβάλλον γεµάτο εντάσεις και τσακωµούς καθώς υπάρχει συσχετισµός ανάµεσα στους γενετικούς παράγοντες και το περιβάλλον ανάπτυξης. Τα συµπτώµατα που µπορεί να παρουσιάσει ένα παιδί µε µαθησιακές δυσκολίες είναι ποικίλα και µπορούν να επηρεάσουν την ανάπτυξη και τις επιδόσεις του. Τα παιδιά µε µαθησιακές δυσκολίες κουράζονται πάρα πολύ εύκολα και παρουσιάζουν αδυναµία συγκέντρωσης για αρκετή ώρα στο µάθηµα. Έτσι εκδηλώνουν συχνά έντονη κινητικότητα και αφαιρούνται µε αποτέλεσµα να δέχονται συνεχείς παρατηρήσεις από τους δασκάλους τους για να εντείνουν την προσοχή τους. Αγχώνονται επίσης για τις σχολικές εργασίες και εκδηλώνουν συχνά αρνητική στάση απέναντι στο σχολείο. Πέρα όµως από το µαθησιακό κοµµάτι, παρατηρούµε ότι τα παιδιά αυτά αντιµετωπίζουν έντονα προβλήµατα και στην καθηµερινή τους ζωή. Όταν ένα παιδί αποθαρρύνεται συνεχώς από το περιβάλλον του, είναι πολύ λογικό να αισθάνεται αποµονωµένο και διαφορετικό από την οµάδα. Έτσι αποφεύγει την συναναστροφή µε τους συνοµηλίκους του ενώ πολλές φορές καλλιεργεί µια επιθετική συµπεριφορά πιστεύοντας ότι µε αυτή θα ενταχθεί στην οµάδα ή ακόµα κι ότι θα γίνει αρχηγός της. Συνεπώς οι µαθησιακές δυσκολίες συνυπάρχουν µε συναισθηµατικά και κοινωνικά προβλήµατα. Οι δυσκολίες που αντιµετωπίζουν τα παιδιά στην κατανόηση και παραγωγή γραπτού λόγου, στην κατάκτηση της δεξιότητας για σωστή γραφή αλλά και στην προσπάθειά τους να ενταχθούν στο κοινωνικό σύνολο, δηµιουργούν γνωστικές ελλείψεις, αυξηµένο άγχος, µειωµένη αυτοεκτίµηση, έλλειψη κινήτρων και προβλήµατα στις κοινωνικές τους σχέσεις. Οι µαθησιακές δυσκολίες εµφανίζονται συνήθως στα προσχολικά χρόνια, όταν το παιδί είναι περίπου 6-7 χρονών, ενώ εξελίσσονται καλά όταν από µικρή ηλικία παρακολουθήσει εξειδικευµένα ψυχοεκπαιδευτικά προγράµµατα και υπάρχει συνεχής συνεργασία µε ειδικό ψυχολόγο ή λογοθεραπευτή. Τόσο οι γονείς όσο και οι εκπαιδευτικοί θα πρέπει να γνωρίζουν τα συµπτώµατα, γιατί µια σωστή θεραπευτική προσέγγιση µπορεί να αποτρέψει την εξέλιξη της κατάστασης σε πολύ χειρότερο επίπεδο. Η έγκυρη αναγνώριση και συνειδητοποίηση των ψυχολογικών, εκπαιδευτικών και κοινωνικών παραγόντων που εµπλέκονται στο πρόβληµα του παιδιού είναι το πιο σηµαντικό εφόδιο στην προσπάθεια σχεδιασµού µιας αποτελεσµατικής παρέµβασης που έχει ως στόχο να ενισχύσει την αίσθηση ικανότητας, αυτάρκειας και προσωπικού ελέγχου του παιδιού. Επιπλέον η ενηµέρωση των εκπαιδευτικών για την έννοια και τη φύση των µαθησιακών δυσκολιών καθώς επίσης τον έγκαιρο εντοπισµό και την αναγνώρισή τους, είναι πολύ σηµαντική για την εκπαιδευτική αξιολόγηση. Ο καθηγητής µέσα στην τάξη είναι αυτός που πρέπει να ισορροπήσει και να διαµορφώσει το διδακτικό πρόγραµµα ώστε ο µαθητής µε µαθησιακές δυσκολίες να µη νοιώθει κατωτερότητα, απογοήτευση και αποτυχία και να ενισχύει συνεχώς την προσπάθειά του. Ο καθηγητής είναι αυτός που πρέπει να διαµορφώσει το κατάλληλο περιβάλλον, το οποίο θα συντελέσει όχι µόνο στο να πετύχει το παιδί αλλά και να βιώσει αυτή του την επιτυχία ως αποτέλεσµα κυρίως των δικών του προσπαθειών και ικανοτήτων. Ας µην ξεχνάµε ότι τα παιδιά µε µαθησιακές δυσκολίες έχουν ανάγκη να αµείβονται πιο συχνά και µε συνέπεια. Είναι πολύ σηµαντικό ο εκπαιδευτικός να ξοδεύει αρκετό χρόνο µε τον κάθε µαθητή ξεχωριστά για να µπορέσει να δηµιουργήσει και να διατηρήσει µια σχέση ζωντανή και λειτουργική. Η σωστή εκπαιδευτική προσέγγιση είναι δυνατόν να αλλάξει αποφασιστικά τη στάση που έχει το παιδί απέναντι στο σχολείο και να του δώσει την αισιοδοξία και τη δύναµη που χρειάζεται για να προγραµµατίσει το µέλλον του και να επιτύχει τους στόχους του. Now they want to read everyone s Facebook page too! Why is this happening? It s all about security. After the bombs in London on 7th July 2005, a new European Union law said that European Governments can read s and mobile phone texts. Why? So that the police can track terrorists. In March 2009, the UK Government decided to extend this law. This means they can now look on social networking sites, like MySpace and Facebook. The way we collect information needs to change so that the police can fight terrorism, says the Home Office. What do the critics say? Isabella Sankey of Liberty says this is a terrifying prospect. It would turn millions of innocent Britons into suspects. And Richard Clayton, a computer security expert at Cambridge University, says, They are looking at who you communicate with and who your friends are. It is very intrusive into your private life. Antony Moutsos Director of Studies Real English Melissia World Trade Center The original World Trade Center was a complex with seven buildings featuring landmark twin towers in Lower Manhattan, New York City, United States. The complex opened on April 4, 1973, and was destroyed in 2001 during the September 11 attacks. The site is currently being rebuilt with five new skyscrapers and a memorial to the casualties of the attacks. As of November 2011, only one skyscraper has been completed, with four more expected to be completed before One World Trade Center will be the lead building for the new complex and is expected to be finished by A sixth tower is still awaiting confirmation to be built. At the time of their completion, the original 1 and 2 World Trade Center, known colloquially as the Twin Towers, were the tallest buildings in the world. The complex was designed in the early 1960s by Minoru Yamasaki and Associates of Troy, Michigan, and Emery Roth and Sons of New York.[2] The twin 110-story towers used a tube-frame structural design. To gain approval for the project, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey agreed to take over the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, which became the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH). Groundbreaking for the World Trade Center took place on August 5, The North Tower (1) was completed in December 1972 and the South Tower (2) was finished in July The construction project involved excavating a large amount of material, which was later used as landfill to build Battery Park City on the west side of Lower Manhattan. The cost for the construction was $400 million ($2,200,000,000 in 2012 dollars).[3] The complex was located in the heart of New York City's downtown financial district and contained 13.4 million square feet (1.24 million m2) of office space.[4][5] The Windows on the World restaurant was located on the 106th and 107th floors of 1 World Trade Center (the North Tower) while the Top of the World observation deck was located on the 107th floor of 2 World Trade Center (the South Tower). Other World Trade Center buildings included the Marriott World Trade Center; 4 World Trade Center; 5 World Trade Center; 6 World Trade Center, which housed the United States Customs. All of these buildings were built between 1975 and The final building constructed was 7 World Trade Center, which was built in The second King Kong was filmed in 1976 with some scenes mentioning and showing the World Trade Center. There are several organizations which help people by getting them to play with dolphins. People with special needs often live routine lives in hospitals and day centres, where they follow set programmes. Depending on their illnesses they get up, eat, do physical exercise and go to bed at fixed hours. They lead very regular lives. What did many children with special needs do during Christmas holidays? They went to Florida and played with a lot of dolphins. A charity organization organized that day as a Christmas present for them. Children had a lot of fun swimming with dolphins. Jellyfish Areti Drakou, Senior A Student of Melissia Real English Jellyfish live in the water and they can swim very well. Jellyfish have poison and if they sting you, you can get very sick. They can t see very well. Some jellyfish live a few hours and others live from a few months to many years. Their bodies consist of 95% water and 5% a material called jelly. They eat fish eggs, small fish and other jellyfish. In Japan people eat the jellyfish. They eat it with soy sauce, sesame oil and chili sauce. There are many types of games like software that run on computers or special consoles that are connected to the TV. These consoles are very popular but very expensive too.both console and computer games have very good graphics and be much better than the first generation. All games are rated from P.E.G.I. - the Pan - European game information age rating system. P.E.G.I. rates the games according to the age of the children that are going to play and makes sure that parents will buy the correct game. 6 Helping Children learn to pay attention Many parents wonder how to get their kids to focus on their homework, especially when the available time is limited. Before we take a look at what all parents want, we have to realize that parents must focus on more than one goal in order to succeed. Firstly, they must pay attention to the weakest part of their child s abilities. Their child may have a short memory span and (ADHD) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which is a condition in which a child has difficulty concentrating and which it can lead to learning and behavioral problem. When it comes to the above conditions, we always address one problem at a time. You cannot correct everything in a day or a week. Patience is the key to success. What parents can do about it is to play some games with their children. Memory games, like the classic one called Memory. In this game we can increase the difficulty of each level of the game. Before your child continues to the next level, he must be able to understand the first level. Besides, there are several educational games available that deal with specific problems in these areas that regulate the degree of concentration. Children with short attention spans should become engaged in these tasks at an earlier age to ensure good results. Games which co-ordinate eye focus and body movement are always pleasant activities that give impressive results. They tend to have the mind controlling the body and enable one to concentrate better. If parents want to get positive results, they have to make sure that their child doesn t develop negative feelings towards them and especially the game. Give him /her time and lots of support without expecting immediate results. You have to be patient and find time otherwise the results will be disastrous. Be strict; don t give up on your first attempt when it is obvious that your child reacts negatively. Your child is doing this out of defense. Get your child to be organized. Lack of organization could also be your problem and in addition, your child tends to copy your behavior. To put it briefly, the secret is to remain calm and patient. Eventually, everyone finds his personalized way of doing things right. I had a great time this Christmas! My cousins came from Drama and we spent together our holidays. We played a lot every day and we watched many movies. At New Year s Eve, Santa visited our house! It s fantastic game. I can be a captain in a cruise boat, on a cargo boat or on a coast guard boat yet to be a captain on a Greenpeace bot with mission to protect the environment.
