3 PASTORAL THOUGHTS Beloved Parishioners, Our Lord s Glorious Resurrection is again with us, shedding even more abundantly the Love and great Compassion of God. Unworthy though we may be, mercy, forgiveness, loving kindness, compassion, charity, salvation, peace, and sanctification are ours, if we but humbly accept the great gift of God in our lives, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christ lived righteously on earth in order to recreate us. He suffered that we might be forgiven of our sins. He died that we might be spared the eternal damnation of eternal Death. He was resurrected that we may also be resurrected spiritually and physically. And He ascended into Heaven that we might receive the Holy Spirit and His Grace and Power that we may become like Christ. Because of the Resurrection, the Feast of Feasts, there is Life, there is Hope, and there is real Peace. If we live and walk in the Light of the Resurrection we shall spread light and the world will know it. Let us humbly, and with true repentance, seek the Lord while He may be found and let us make Him Master of our lives that we may become true and real Christian heirs of the Kingdom and recipients of God s Blessings and Gifts. May you and your loved ones be blessed by the Holy Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ this year and always. The Sacrament of Holy Confession will be available to all the children. Palm Sunday, April 12 th The children need to be in church to take part in the Procession of the Palms. Holy Wednesday, April 15 th at 4:00 p.m. for Holy Unction. Holy Friday, April 17 th at 9:30 a.m. for the Retreat and at 1:00 p.m. for the Apokathelosis. Fr. Constantine will make excusal forms available for those who might need them. Pascha/Easter, April 19 th for the Resurrection, 12 midnight and April 22 nd for St. George Vespers at 7:00 p.m. HOLY COMMUNION- Holy Communion will be offered on April 11 th, 12 th, 15th, 16 th, 18 th, 19 th and 23 rd. Holy Communion is truly the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and becomes fire burning the unworthy. For this reason we appeal to your love that before receiving Holy Communion you take care to make your Holy Confession, receive the permission of your Spiritual Father, and prepare with the required fast as established by the Holy Fathers of the Church. CONFESSION- Don t let Pascha/Easter pass without ridding yourself of accumulated sins. Holy Confession will be available after the Salutations to the Theotokos every Friday during Lent and on Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, April 13 th and 14 th from 3-5 p.m. or by appointment for any other day. HOLY COMMUNION FOR THE SICK- Father Constantine is more than willing to visit the sick and shut-ins. Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, April 13 th and 14 th have been setaside for this purpose. Please call the Church office and make an appointment. RESPECT FOR THE RESURRECTED CHRIST- Show your respect for the Resurrected Christ by remaining for the entire Divine Liturgy. It is the height of irreverence, disrespect and faithlessness to exit the Church just when the Resurrected Christ appears to us in His glory and beckons us to come forward and taste His graciousness in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. For the 40 days of Lent and Holy Week we anticipate this joyous moment of Christ s victory over death. It is inconceivable to me that upon hearing the good news that our Savior has resurrected we choose to excuse ourselves from His presence. If anything, our desire to be with Him after His Passion should be our only desire. Are we to abandon Him again just like His disciples? Are we in such a rush to sit at our paschal table? Have not 40 days of fasting taught us to throw off the shackles of servitude to our bellies? Give your priest the opportunity to personally greet you with the words, "Christ is Risen and

4 to give you a red paschal egg at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy! EASTER OFFERING-Glorifying His holy Resurrection, let us make a generous contribution to His Church. Let your gift reflect your faith in Him, as well as your appreciation and gratitude that He ascended the Cross of His own free will and was crucified for you and me and in place of you and me. Be moved to return love for love! BISHOP DEMETRIOS OF CHICAGO METROPOLIS' VISIT Bishop Demetrios visited our parish on Sunday, March 8 th, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, to celebrate Divine Liturgy and the Procession of the Icons. He also was the Homilist at the Pan-Orthodox Vespers which took place at the Descent of the Holy Spirit Church in Schererville, Indiana later that afternoon. On behalf of Father Constantine and the Parish Council, we thank Mr. James Xerogiannis at Harry-O s Restaurant for the lovely dinner he provided for Bishop Demetrios on Sunday, March 8 th. PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY CLEANING OF CHURCH FOR PASCHA The Philoptochos Ladies, with the help of the Jr. Goya, will be cleaning the church for Pascha on Saturday, April 4 th. April 12 th, Palm Sunday Philoptochos ladies will be selling Tsourekia (Easter Bread) after Divine Liturgy. Cost of bread will be $7.00 each. If you would like to place an order for Tsourekia, you may call the church office at April 16 th, Holy Thursday We will be dyeing and wrapping eggs for Pascha at the church. Meet in the Kitchen at 9 a.m. if you would like to lend a hand. April 22 nd & 23 rd, The Feast Day of St. George The Philoptochos kindly asks all the ladies of our parish to please help by baking sweets for the coffee fellowships following both the Vespers of the 22 nd and the Divine Liturgy on the 23rd. 6 GOOD FRIDAY LENTEN RETREAT Once again, the Sunday School of St. George will host its Annual Good Friday Lenten Retreat on Friday, April 17 th. We encourage everyone to come and get involved in this worthwhile educational event. Our schedule is as follows: 9:30a.m. Registration in the main hall Participants will receive registration packet and schedule. 10:a.m.-12:00 noon Good Friday Lenten Retreat will be held in the Church. Please dress appropriately. Sorry, no jeans allowed. 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. Lenten Luncheon Registration is $5.00, which covers the entire family for Luncheon and Supplies. 1:00 p.m. Apokathelosis Service We are in dire need of Volunteers to help with the Retreat and to prepare the luncheon. Please contact the church office at or speak to any of the Sunday School personnel no later than Wednesday, April 15 th. EASTER VACATION --- There will be no Sunday School on Sunday, April 12 and 19, EASTER EGG HUNT -- Will take place on Sunday, April 19 th immediately following the Agape Vespers in the Sunday School classrooms for grades Pre-K to fourth grade. Parental Supervision is mandatory. JR. CHOIR On Sunday, April 5 th and May 3 rd, the Sunday School children will be singing God s praises during Liturgy. All students (grades 3-10) are to meet with Dr. Kerri in the meeting room at 9:30 a.m. for practice. SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MEETING The next Sunday School teachers meeting will take place on Thursday, April 9 th at 6:00 p.m. in the meeting room. This will be a combined meeting with the PTA to discuss Graduation Sunday MISSION BOXES Each child has received a small cardboard coin box from the Sunday School. They are to place whatever they can in the box and make a contribution to the spreading of Christ s Gospel. Parental involvement is encouraged in order to teach their child the importance of giving alms and mission work. The cardboard box is to be returned to the Sunday School on Palm Sunday, April 12, If there are any questions, then please contact the Church office for more information. LOOKING TO MAY MAY 31 st The community of Saint George will be honoring all High School, Greek School and Sunday School graduates. Be watching the weekly bulletin and May s Tropeoforos for more information. JR GOYA This year s Palm Sunday Luncheon will be held in the coffee fellowship room and space is limited. The next meeting for Jr. GOYA will take place on Friday, April 3 rd at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room. SR GOYA RETREAT The Sr. Goya will hold their annual Lenten retreat on Friday, April 3rd starting at 5:00 p.m. and concluding by attending the AKATHYST HYMN at 7:00 p.m. GREEK SCHOOL Greek School will not be held the week of April 13 th April 17 th due to Holy Week and April 22 nd for Saint George Vespers. THE GREEK SCHOOL PTA The PTA would like to extend a big thanks to all who helped at the Greek Independence Day program. We congratulate Keria Vula and the children who did such a wonderful job. 7 GREEK ORTHODOX BASKETBALL LEAGUE!!!! With impressive wins over St. Haralambos, Holy Cross, and with a win over St. Demetrios Elmhurst, to capture the championship, they ended a phenomenal season with a first place 19 and 1 record. Bringing home 2 TROPHIES, they also captured the award for the BEST SEASON RECORD!!!! Great teamwork, excellent shooting, fast breaks, phenomenal passing were the hallmark of a spectacular season. The boys were just fun to watch and played skillfully with every opponent they met. They also brought home earlier the THANKSGIVING CHAMPIONSHIP, making it BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS for TWO SEASONS!!! All players contributed to this team, whether it was playing on the court, or spirit, or both. They all did a phenomenal job representing our church in the Chicago league. Despite obstacles during the season, they all stepped up like a team and rose to the occasion! CONGRATULATIONS, BOYS ON A SUCCESSFUL SEASON!! Most valuable player awards go to Senior Bobby Manousopoulos, Senior Telly Panousis, and Junior Vaio Goulionis. They all had games where they stood out. Telly Panousis had a game high of 40 points in one game. Bobby Manousopoulos showed phenomenal driving ability and beat his opponents down the court with awesome finesse. Vaio Goulionis was virtually unstoppable underneath with a strong left backboard drive-up lay-up. Then, you had Senior Johnny Roumpakis who lit up the court and the fans with clutch 3 pointers and phenomenal passing in all championship games. Senior George Olson was always there to grab the ball and put it up for a quick lay-up and Peter Doukas (Noti) who made his mark in the championship game of the Thanksgiving Tourney putting up some nice clutch baskets, getting us closer to the championship title. Also, during the Thanksgiving championship, Bobby Tsiakopoulos made a nice debut with clutch 3 pointers to cinch the championship. Louie Tsiakopoulos also contributed to the winning effort by making some nice drive up shots. An up and coming player is Tommy Cappas who stepped up and filled in phenomenally at the guard spot when we needed him, hitting some great baskets along the way. The supporting players, all came off the bench every game and handled the ball just great insuring the win. They are: Tim Sideropoulos, Dean Boulazeris, Yiannis Sakelaris, Louis Bakris, Chris Zaglaras, and Andrew Kazas. The coaches are undoubtedly the best coaches in the league with a combined 40 year experience coaching and playing on our church teams throughout the years. Head coach Dr. Nick Roumpakis, and Assistant Coaches Frank Kostouros and Pete Cappas all made their mark this season in motivating, and advising this basketball team to bring out their best God-given talents every game. It was all these individuals, who, in a combined effort, made this basketball team a team that will go down among the best teams in the rich St. George basketball history. Once again, congratulations on a great year, boys!! ST. GEORGE GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls basketball team wound up with an impressive second place in the standings of the Chicago Greek Orthodox Basketball League. They advanced to the semifinals of the playoffs before losing to a very talented St. Nectarios team. Our girl s team consisted of Toula Manousopoulos, Joanna Marinakos, Maggie Mouratides, Sophie Chatziandreou, Alexia Aliferakis, Elle Panas, Katherine Andreatos, Evangelia Andreatos and Anastasia Papadatos. A great thank you goes to Coach Angie Mouratides who was dedicated and coached the girls to a successful season. Thank you girls, for helping us represent St. George and for supporting our boys too!!! GRADE SCHOOL BASKETBALL Even though St. George did not have a grade school team, they combined with St. Demetrios of Hammond. Players from our church who were part of this team were: Jimmy Lafakis, Alex Tsiakopoulos, and Christos Sakelaris. We were fortunate this year to have home games in Hammond. Moms that helped

8 out in the concession stand making it a fundraiser for GOYA were Fay Olson, Patty Roumpakis, Kathy Lafakis and Carol Sakelaris. Thanks, moms, for working BEHIND THE SCENES!!! WE WANT TO ALSO THANK ALL PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE TEAM THAT CAME OUT AND SUPPORTED OUR TEAM AT EVERY GAME -- HOME AND AWAY!! THANK YOU TO FATHER ALIFERAKIS FOR SPIRITUAL SUPPORT! POST SEASON TOURNAMENTS Our boys will also be playing in post season tournaments. They are entering the AHEPA Bone Marrow tourney in Chicago, the National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament (NHIBT) in Chicago, and the George Mougolias Memorial Basketball Tournament in Chicago. We want to thank Thad Kanavos for his work in assembling the rosters and paperwork, and the ORDER of AHEPA, Calumet Chapter #157, Schererville, Indiana, for sponsoring us in every one of these tournaments! This is an invaluable experience for our team to go up against some of the best high school talent in the country!! JR. OLYMPICS Plans are already underway for this year s Metropolis Jr. Olympics Program, which will be held on the weekend of May 22 nd 23 rd at SS. Constantine & Helen in Palos Hills, IL. The Olympics are for our youth ages 8-18 years old who may complete in various track and field events, along with soccer, tennis, swimming, softball, volleyball, and much, much more. More details will be forthcoming, however, we do need coaches and chaperones if we are to field a variety of teams and athletes. To volunteer your time or to sign up, contact Mrs. Eliana Grahovac at FANARI CAMP Our Metropolis of Chicago summer youth camp will be held June 21 27, 2009 at the Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, Wisconsin. The FANARI CAMP EXPERIENCE is one that all our youth should take advantage of and participate in. It gives our children an opportunity to meet other Orthodox youth, while spending time learning about our faith in a fun and Orthodox Christian environment. If your child is interested in this camp experience, please contact either Father Constantine or the youth advisors or stop by the Church office shelf for an application form. Age for campers is or entering grades 6 th 11 th. Early Bird Rate Deadline May 1, 2009: $425-2 children $800-3 Children $1,200; Registration Deadline June 1, 2009: $450-2 children $850-3 children $1,275; Late Registrations after June 1 st : $475-2 children $900-3 children $1,250. (All campers must be from one family.) This includes transportation, meals, lodging and activity fees. AVON WALK FOR BREAST CANCER Donations to our "St. George Spears" who are walking for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer may be made through the church office or you can donate directly online at avonwalk.org. Please make checks payable to "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer". ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (A.R.E.) We are continuing our study of the last book of Holy Scripture, the Book of Revelations. This is a Bible Study format. We will be meeting Monday after the Great Compline Service, April 6 th and once again on Monday April 27th at 7:00 p.m. ALL ARE WELCOME!!! LAKE COUNTY RIGHT TO LIFE ANNUAL BANQUET Lake County Right to Life s annual banquet will take place on Friday, April 24 th at The Patrician Banquet Center in Schererville. The Silent Auction begins at 6:30 p.m. The speaker is David Bereit, who will speak on Hope for the Future in the Pro-Life Movement. He has been n outspoken pro-life advocate since He has served as Executive Director of the American Life League and National Director of Stop Planned

9 Parenthood (STOPP). David now directs the National 40 Days for Life Campaign as seen on EWTN-TV. Lake County Right to Life is offering people the opportunity to show their support for the pro-life cause.
