2 PARISH LIFE Children doing Great Prostrations with Fr. Jon during the Great Compline Service celebrated on the Mondays of Great and Holy Lent. Great Prostrations are done three times during the Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian. Members of our Parish preparing the Baklava that will be sold at the upcoming Greek Cultural Festival on Friday, June 14 th, and Saturday, June 15 th. It s great because it s homemade and all the Quad Cities know it!!!

3 PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption, Greetings in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Many years ago someone told me, You may think you re a leader, but if you turn around and no one is following you, then you re just going for a walk. This is quite profound because it shows us that our perception and the reality aren t always the same. Likewise, soon we will all be feasting the Resurrection of our Lord - or will we? Be feasting, that is. The reality is that in order to feast, one must first prepare with fasting, prayer and modest behavior. For those who have prepared, Pascha is not only the paramount Christian celebration, but it is the feast of feasts. For those who believe they are feasting but haven t prepared, they are merely having a backyard lamb roast. This year more than ever, I have witnessed greater preparation by many and very little preparation, if any, by others. On one hand, we have had the best attendance at our weekday services that I have witnessed in my 6 years at the Assumption. I have also heard from many about their struggles to increase their fasting. What a blessing! On the other hand, there have been many who not only don t prepare, but even boast about immodest behavior, lack of participation and not fasting - which is not only a self-indictment of their lack of preparation, but by boasting, a complete and total disregard for His Church. For those who have prepared, I know you will be here Holy Week - walking with the Lord as He is betrayed, judged, crucified and resurrects. You will receive Holy Communion and break your fast with your brothers and sisters in Christ. You are leading; you will feast! For those who have not prepared, you have 2 choices - start preparing today and be with Christ during Holy Week, or continue on the same walk, thus reducing the feast to a weekend lamb roast. 6 JUNIOR OLYMPICS 32 nd Annual Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago Junior Olympics May 24 th 26 th, 2013 Hosted by: Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church (Palos Hills, IL) The purpose of the Junior Olympics is to encourage athletic competition and fellowship on a Metropolis-wide scale. The program has the participation of over 35 Parishes on average with over 2,000 participants each year and consists of three days of sporting, social, and spiritual events. 8 SAINT JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN Celebrated May 8 This Apostle was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the elder. First a fisherman by trade, he became an Apostle and the beloved Disciple of Christ. Only he of all the Disciples followed Him even to the Cross, and was entrusted with the care of our Saviour's Mother, as it were another son to her, and a brother of Christ the Teacher. After this, he preached throughout Asia Minor, especially in Ephesus. When the second persecution against the Christians began in the year 96 during the reign of Domitian, he was taken in bonds to Rome, and there was cast into a vat filled to the brim with boiling oil. Coming forth therefrom unharmed, he was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Returning again to Ephesus after the death of the tyrant, he wrote his Gospel (after the other Evangelists had already written theirs) and his three Catholic Epistles. In all, he lived ninety-five years and fell asleep in the Lord during the reign of Trajan in the year 100. He was called Theologian because he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible and eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this cause that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Irenaeus says-is depicted in his icon, for this was one of the four symbolic living creatures that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10).

9 SAINTS CONSTANTINE AND HELEN Celebrated May 21 This great and renowned sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Roman empire), and of the blessed Helen. He was born in 272, in Naissus of Dardania, a city on the Hellespont. In 306, when his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Italy, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he himself personally addressed. In 324, in the ancient city of Byzantium, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Romans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Nicomedia, he requested to receive divine Baptism, according to Eusebius, and also according to Socrates and Sozomen; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21 or 22, the day of Pentecost, having lived sixty-five years, of which he ruled for thirtyone years. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, which had been built by him. As for his holy mother Helen, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After this, Saint Helen, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Saviour was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and many others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about eighty years of age.

16 Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Θεολόγος 8 Μαϊου Ο Ιωάννης ήταν γιός του Ζεβεδαίου και της Σαλώμης και αδελφός του αποστόλου Ιακώβου νεώτερος. Στην αρχή ήταν μαθητής του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου και κατόπιν έγινε μαθητής του Κυρίου. Ήταν ένας απο τους δώδεκα μαθητές Του, και μάλιστα ο μαθητής "ον ηγάπα ο Ιησούς", δηλαδή, τον οποίο αγαπούσε ιδιαίτερα ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός. Ο Ιωάννης είναι ο συγγραφέας του 4ου κατά σειρά Ευαγγελίου στην Καινή Διαθήκη, καθώς επίσης τριών Καθολικών Επιστολών και της Αποκάλυψης. Τη ζωή του κοντά στον Κύριο τη γνωρίζουμε μέσα απο τα Ευαγγέλια της Καινής Διαθήκης. Ο Ιωάννης συνεχίζει έντονα τη δράση του και μετά την Ανάληψη του Κυρίου. Αυτός και ο Πέτρος είναι πρώτοι που κήρυξαν, μετά την επιφοίτηση του Αγίου Πνεύματος, σε όλο το λαό το όνομα του Ιησού. Η παράδοση, επίσης, μας λέει ότι ο Ιωάννης κήρυξε το Ευαγγέλιο στη Μ. Ασία, και ιδιαίτερα στην Έφεσο. Στα χρόνια του αυτοκράτορα Δομετιανού βασανίστηκε και εξορίστηκε στην Πάτμο, όπου έγραψε και την Αποκάλυψη. Ο Ιωάννης έζησε γύρω στα 100 χρόνια (πέθανε γύρω στο 105 με 106 μ.χ.). Εκείνο, όμως, που αξίζει να αναφέρουμε, είναι η φράση που συνεχώς έλεγε στους μαθητές του: "Τεκνία, αγαπάτε αλλήλους", που σημαίνει, παιδιά μου, να αγαπάτε ο ένας τον άλλο. Και όταν οι μαθητές του ρώτησαν γιατί συνεχώς τους λέει την ίδια φράση, αυτός απάντησε "διότι είναι εντολή του Κυρίου, και όταν αυτό μόνο γίνεται, αρκεί".

17 Άγιος Κωνσταντίνος 21 Μαϊου Ο Μέγας Κωνσταντίνος γεννήθηκε το 274 μ.χ. Πατέρας του ήταν ο Κωνστάντιος ο Α ο Χλωρός και μητέρα του η Ελένη, απο το Δρέπανο της Βιθυνίας. Ο Κωνσταντίνος απο 18 χρονών έγινε στρατιωτικός και, χάρη στην ανδρεία του, τιμήθηκε με τα ανώτερα αξιώματα του στρατού. Ήταν αυτός, που με το χριστιανικό σταυροειδές λάβαρο με το ελληνόγραμμα "εν τούτω νίκα", κατατρόπωσε τα στρατεύματα του Μαξεντίου και έπειτα του Λικινίου. Επίσης, ήταν ο πρώτος αυτοκράτωρ που ευνόησε την Εκκλησία, μετά απο τρείς αιώνες ανελέητου διωγμού. Μετέφερε την πρωτεύουσα του κράτος του στο αρχαίο βυζάντιο, και εκεί έκτισε τη βασίλισσα των πόλεων, την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Στο τέλος, ο Κωνσταντίνος αξιώθηκε και του Αγίου Βαπτίσματος, και αμέσως μετά είπε: "Νύν αληθεί λόγω μακάριον οίδ εμαυτόν, νύν της αθανάτου ζωής πεφάναι άξιον, νύν του θείου μετειληφέναι φωτός πεπίστευκα". Τώρα, δηλαδή, σύμφωνα με το λόγο της αλήθειας, ξέρω ότι είμαι μακάριος, τώρα έχω γίνει άξιος της αθανάτου ζωής, τώρα έχω πιστέψει πώς έλαβα το θείο φώς. Ο Μέγας Κωνσταντίνος πέθανε σε ηλικία 63 ετών (21 Μαΐου 337). Η δε μητέρα του Ελένη, που συνεορτάζεται με το γιό της, ήταν αυτή που βρήκε τον Τίμιο Σταυρό στους Αγίους Τόπους και έδωσε στο Μέγα Κωνσταντίνο την πρέπουσα διαπαιδαγώγηση. 20 PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES Parish Council Meeting Minutes March 12, 2013 Call to Order at 6:45pm. Fr. Jon led the opening prayer. Roll Call: Present: John Stopoulos, Cathy Diakageorgiou, Mike Haney, Paris Fotos, Orest Akulow, Kosta Dounoulis, and George Georgiadis Excused: Denny Mekus and Matt Miller Treasurer s Report: Current Balance is $2, (February 28th, 2013 balance was $3,674.96). Need a projected total of $8, to pay bills for the Month of March. Motion made by Kosta to transfer $2, with an option to transfer an additional $2, if needed from the Festival Fund to pay bills for the month of March. 2nd by: Cathy. President s Report: Presbytera Tzerdimos would like to say THANK YOU to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church for everything after the falling asleep of her husband Fr. Nikiforos Tzerdimos. Priest s Report: Parish Council will denote $50 per person for the Epitaphio Flowers. Motion made by Cathy, 2nd by: Kosta. Installed 29 LED s at a total cost of $ The Church will once again have a lamb for Pascha with a Pot Luck celebration. On March 31, 2013 Chris Avramopoulos will be coming to the Church to promote Junior Olympics and Fanari Summer Camp. Need to try and have all the children of the parish present. Paris Fotos has volunteered to help organize the athletic events of the Church which include Jr. Olympics, GOYA Basketball Tournament and Summer Softball League. Motion to appoint Paris to athletic director made by Cathy, 2nd by: Orest Scholarship Fund. Cathy and Kosta will join the 5 member board along with members of the Philoptochos, Pam Collier and Erica Melchin, and the Priest to put a system together to help raise more money. GOLF OUTING date is Monday June 24th, Evangelical Outreach Committee. The new committee will work on a better system for those visiting the Church to learn more about the faith and putting together a system for outreach. Parish Council will be in charge of getting four people to carry the

21 PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES Epitaphio and one person to carry the large Cross on Holy Friday Evening. Fr. Jon is looking into other insurance options for him and his family to decrease the cost we are paying annually for health insurance. Motion made by Kosta to allow Fr. Jon to go with other health insurance plan if it cuts the cost by 50% or more, if it doesn t cut it by at least 50% the parish council will re-visit the health insurance options. 2nd by: Cathy. Old/New Business: GENERAL ASSEMBLY SUNDAY APRIL 21, 2013 It was discovered that the Grease Trap baffle is gone in the kitchen. Lupe will work on fabricating a new baffle to replace the missing one. Need to label Kitchen sinks, etc. appropriately so those who use the kitchen know where things go. Kosta will mount a 1st aid kit in the kitchen so people know where it is in case it is needed. Kosta makes a motion to get bids for electrical upgrades to the Church before festival to cut costs so that it can be presented at the General Assembly. 2nd by: Paris We will be checking the current rates at The National Bank to see if they are the same or better then what we are currently getting to move some business to them. Solea lights bid came in at +/- $1, Planning a GOYA event in May. Have not decided exact date, time or event yet. Motion to adjourn by: Cathy motioned, 2nd by: Mike.
