7 NOTICE UPCOMING COMMUNITY BOARD ELECTION We are looking for interested and motivated members of our Community to run in the upcoming election for the Community Board of Directors. Those eligible to run must: Desire to contribute your time and talents, and work as part of a team for the betterment of our Community! Be eighteen (18) years of age or more and have been a resident of Canada for a continuous period of Two (2) years. Be a member in good standing of the Church. Be a person who has lived and abides by the canons and teachings of the Greek Orthodox faith. All interested persons are asked to put their name forward to Mr. Chris Argiriou no later than Thursday, 01 December Please contact Mr. Argiriou or any Board member if you have any questions. Election day is Sunday, 06 December 2015 in the Board Room of the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre (MHCC). Voting will commence after Divine Liturgy and will end at 5:00 pm. Who can vote? Parish members with one (1) year paid membership (2015) are entitled to vote and may cast a ballot at the MHCC. Come and vote! Have your say in the future of our community! 7

8 Thoughts from our Parish Priest CHRISTMAS With Christmas being just around the corner, many of us are already making preparations for the holidays. The Church prepares our spirits and bodies for the birth of the Christ by fasting, praying, almsgiving, and reflecting on the birth of God as a human, and what that means for us. In our homes meals, presents, and family gatherings have to be planned and prepared beforehand. The Christmas season offers us two types of celebrations: a) the Church version, which offers us an understanding into the love God has for us - a humble, sacrificial love, as Christ is born not as a king or judge, but as a humble and loving companion in this world, and b) the secular version, with Rudolf, Santa, and store specials. As Orthodox Christians, though we celebrate with presents and family gatherings (and really, why not celebrate with joy the birth of Christ with our families and friends), our main focus and celebration is always the birth of Christ. Advertisements, store sales and specials, our need to get the perfect gift for everyone, our hope that we get the perfect gift - all lead up to this one day of family traditions, present exchanges, meals, and then nothing. The end. The dinner finishes, the gifts are unwrapped, everyone has gone home. What are we left with? Dishes to wash, wrapping and packaging to throw out, and bills to pay. We come to an abrupt stop; a cold, unnatural end to the one-day festivities. In the middle of the consumerist madness that is everywhere we turn around this time of the year, our Church calls us to remember the spiritual; to remember Christ. We are called to fast in order to humble our body so the spirit may be free to celebrate the birth of its Creator. We are called to pray that the joy of the Incarnation - the same joy that has all the angelic powers constantly singing and praising God - fills our hearts and lives. We are reconciled with our Father as the Son takes on our nature and becomes ours; the Son of God becomes also the Son of Man. As the Son takes on our nature, the Father adopts us as heirs of His Kingdom. We are the prodigals, and after such a long and hard self-imposed exile, God comes and finds us because we cannot reach Him, and not only does He find us, but He makes us heirs of His house. We are called to pray and strive for peace, not only among nations, but between humanity and God. Indeed, we cannot know true peace and joy until we reconcile ourselves with our Lord. The Christmas season (the days between Christmas and Theophany) is slowly being replaced with the shopping season (the days leading up to Christmas). We get so frustrated, tired, and burned out during the shopping season, that when the Church calls us to celebrate the birth of Christ in the actual Christmas season, we are so tired from the shopping, the noise, and the demands we put on ourselves to have the perfect Christmas, that we have no energy to glorify the birth of our God from His birth to His Baptism. Christ is born on Christmas day and is revealed to us as God at Theophany. These twelve days is the real feast of Christmas. As we receive our presents, let us also remember that the Holy Spirit gives us gifts as well, and let us be grateful for those gifts which are far more precious than anything we can give. As we celebrate the birth of our Saviour with our families and friends, let us pray that the peace of God speaks to every single human heart in the world and moves each heart and soul towards peace, reconciliation, forgiveness, and holiness. Merry Christmas to all of you. Christ is born, glorify Him! 8

9 Thoughts from our Parish Priest ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΑ Τα Χριστούγεννα έρχονται γρήγορα, και πολλοί από εμάς ετοιμαζόμαστε για τις γιορτές. Η Εκκλησία προετοιμάζει τις ψυχές και τα σώματα μας για την γέννηση του Χριστού με νηστεία, προσευχή, ελεημοσύνη, και στρέφοντας τη σκέψη μας στην γέννηση του Θεού ως άνθρωπος, και τι σημαίνει αυτό για εμάς. Στα σπίτια μας τα γεύματα, δώρα, και οικογενειακές συνάξεις σχεδιάζονται και ετοιμάζονται από πριν. Οι χριστουγεννιάτικες γιορτές μας προσφέρουν δυο είδη εορτασμών, α) τον εκκλησιαστικό, ο οποίος μας προσφέρει μια κατανόηση της αγάπης που έχει ο Θεός για εμάς - μια ταπεινή αγάπη θυσίας, όπως ο Χριστός γεννιέται όχι σαν βασιλιάς η δικαστής, άλλα σαν ταπεινός και στοργικός σύντροφος σε αυτόν τον κόσμο, και β) ο κοσμικός εορτασμός, με τον Ρούντολφ, και τον Άι Βασίλη. Ως Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί, αν και γιορτάζουμε με δώρα και και οικογενειακές συνάξεις (και αλήθεια, γιατί να μην γιορτάσουμε με χαρά την γέννηση του Χριστού με τις οικογένειες και τους φίλους μας), η κύρια χαρά και γιορτή μας είναι πάντα η ενσάρκωση του Χριστου. Διαφημίσεις, εκπτώσεις, η ανάγκη να πάρουμε το τέλειο δώρο για τον καθένα, η ελπίδα ότι θα λάβουμε το τέλειο δώρο - όλα μας οδηγούν στη μια ήμερα οικογενειακών παραδόσεων, ανταλλαγής δώρων, γεύματα, και μετά τίποτα. Τέλος. Το γεύμα τελειώνει, τα δώρα έχουν ανοιχτεί, και όλοι έχουν πάει στα σπίτια τους. Τις μας μένει; Πιάτα να πλύνουμε, τυλίγματα και κουτιά να πετάξουμε, και λογαριασμοί να πληρώσουμε. Ερχόμαστε σε ένα απότομο τέλος, ένα κρύο, αφύσικο τέρμα στην μονοήμερη γιορτή. Στη μέση αυτής της τρέλας του καταναλωτισμού που βρίσκεται όπου και να κοιτάξουμε, ειδικά αυτές τις μέρες, η Εκκλησία μας καλεί να θυμηθούμε και το πνευματικό, να θυμηθούμε τον Χριστό. Καλούμαστε να νηστέψουμε για να ταπεινώσουμε το σώμα, ώστε η ψυχή να ελευθερωθεί για να γιορτάσει την γέννηση του δημιουργού της. Καλούμαστε να προσευχηθούμε για την χαρά της Ενσαρκώσεως - η ίδια χαρά που κάνει τις αγγελικές δυνάμεις να τραγουδάνε και να δοξάζουν τον Θεό ασταμάτητα - να γεμίσει τις καρδίες και τις ζωές μας. Ο Υιός παίρνει πάνω Του την ανθρώπινη φύση μας και γίνεται δικός μας, και έτσι συμφιλιωνόμαστε με τον Πάτερα μας, γιατί ο Υιός του Θεού γίνεται και Υιός του Ανθρώπου. Ο Υιός παίρνει πάνω Του την ανθρώπινη φύση, και ο Πατέρας μας υιοθετεί ως κληρονόμους της Βασιλείας Του. Είμαστε οι άσωτοι, και μετά από μια τόσο μακρά και δύσκολη αυτοεξορία, ο Θεός έρχεται και μας βρίσκει γιατί δεν μπορούμε εμείς να φτάσουμε Αυτόν. Και όχι μονό μας βρίσκει, άλλα μας κάνει κληρονόμους του Οίκου Του. Καλούμαστε να προσευχηθούμε και να δουλέψουμε για την ειρήνη, όχι μόνο ανάμεσα στα έθνη, άλλα επίσης μεταξύ ανθρώπου και Θεού. Πράγματι, δεν μπορούμε να ξέρουμε αληθινή ειρήνη και χαρά μέχρι να συμφιλιωθούμε με τον Κύριο μας. Η ήμερες των Χριστουγέννων (απο τα Χριστούγεννα έως τα Θεοφάνεια) αργά αντικαθίστανται με τις ήμερες για τα ψώνια (τις ήμερες πριν τα Χριστούγεννα). Γινόμαστε τόσο εκνευρισμένοι, κουρασμένοι, και εξαντλημένοι τις μέρες πριν τα Χριστούγεννα, ώστε όταν η Εκκλησία μας καλεί να γιορτάσουμε την γέννηση του Χριστού μέσα στις πραγματικές μέρες των Χριστουγέννων, είμαστε τόσο κουρασμένοι από τις αγορές, τον θόρυβο, και τις απαιτήσεις που έχουμε από τους εαυτούς μας για τα τέλεια Χριστούγεννα, που δεν έχουμε την δύναμη ή την θέληση να δοξάσουμε την γέννηση του Θεού μας έως την Βάπτιση Του. Ο Χριστός γεννιέται τα Χριστούγεννα και φανερώνεται σε εμάς στα Θεοφάνεια. Αυτές οι δώδεκα μέρες είναι η αληθινή περίοδος των Χριστουγέννων. Όπως ανοίγουμε τα δώρα μας, ας θυμηθούμε ότι και το Αγιο Πνεύμα μας δίνει δωρα, και ας είμαστε ευγνώμονες για αυτά τα δώρα, τα οποία είναι πιο πολύτιμα από ότι μπορούμε εμείς να δώσουμε. Όπως γιορτάζουμε την ενσάρκωση του Θεού με τις οικογένειες μας και τους φίλους μας, ας προσευχηθούμε η ειρήνη του Θεού να μιλήσει στην καρδία κάθε ανθρώπου σε αυτόν τον κόσμο, και να κινήσει κάθε καρδία και ψυχή προς την ειρήνη, την συμφιλίωση, την συγχώρεση, και την αγιότητα. 10 Message from the Community President Αγαπητοί Συμπάρικοι, Αρχίσαμε τη δουλειά του Φθινοπώρου δυναμικά και προσπαθούμε να βάλουμε τις προτεραιότητες μας, καθώς η δουλειά στηνν Κοινότητά μας δε σταματά ποτέ. Μπήκε ο Νοέμβριος και ετοιμαζόμαστε για πολλά, όπως και για το Ρεβεγιόν της Πρωτοχρονιάς. Πιστεύω, ότι θα περάσουμε πολύ ωραία εμείς και οι οικογένειες μας. Ο Βασίλης Γαλάτης και η παρέα του κάνουν φοβερό κέφι και θα διασκεδάσουμε πολύ, για να ξεκινήσει καλά η χρονιά μας με κέφι και καλή διάθεση. Tα εισιτήρια για την εκδήλωση είναι μετρημένα για αυτό φροντίστε νωρίς να προμηθευτείτε τα δικά σας. Στις 6 Δεκεμβρίου έχουμε τις εκλογές και την καθιερωμένη ενημέρωση για τις εργασίες μας. Θα ήθελα να σας προτρέψω να προσφερθείτε όλοι να δώσετε από τον εαυτό σας και το πολύτιμο χρόνο σας, να συμμετέχετε στις εκλογές και άρα στο Συμβούλιο με τις καλές σας ιδέες και την αγάπη σας για την Κοινότητά μας. Λάβετε μέρος στην καθιερωμένη ενημέρωση για τις εργασίες, που έγινα στην Κοινότητα μας και ελάτε να ακούσετε για ποια θέματα έχουμε βάλει σκοπό να γίνουν μελέτες και εφαρμογή. Η συμμετοχή σας και οι καλές σας ιδέες είναι πολύ σεβαστές και απαραίτητες και με τη δική σας συμμετοχή κάνουμε και εμείς ό,τι καλύτερο μπορούμε. Με πολύ αγάπη εύχομαι στον καθένα ξεχωριστά, ό,τι καλύτερο έχει ο Θεος και πολλές ευχές για τις Άγιες Μέρες, που έρχονται. Βίκη Σκούρα My fellow Community members, We have started our autumn activities dynamically and we are trying to prioritize our activities, as the work of the Community never ends. November is here and we are preparing for many things, i.e. our New Year s Eve dance. I believe we will have a great time with our families. Vasilis Galatis and his friends create a great atmosphere and we will celebrate and bring in the new year with joy and celebration. The tickets for the event are numbered, so please make sure you pick up your tickets early. On December 6 we have Board elections and our Fall Update meeting. I ask you all to offer yourselves and your precious time and participate in the elections, and therefore in the board, with your great ideas and love for our Community. Take part in the Fall Update meeting and be informed about the work taking place in our Community, as well as what projects we are planing to study and work on. Your participation and good ideas are respected and needed, and with your participation we in turn do the best we can. 13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion.To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

28 28η Οκτωβρίου OXI DAY BANQUET AHEPA SCHOLARSHIPS / ΥΠΟΤΡΟΦΙΕΣ ΑΧΕΠΑ Guest speaker, Maria Mitousis, received standing ovations and delivered an inspiring talk at the OXI Day Banquet held on October 24th, This year marks 25 years since the first AHEPA Scholarships were awarded. One of three individuals who were the first to receive a scholarship in 1990 was present. Eleni (Bafaloucos) Balageorge was acknowledged and thanked for contributing funds for the AHEPA Scholarship Program in 2014 and Special thanks to Demetrios and Helene Kontzamanis and Dr. Stasa Veroukis who continue to provide funds for scholarships. Further thanks were expressed to all who have contributed to the AHEPA Scholarship Program directly or as volunteers to fund raising efforts and made it possible to offer scholarships annually for 25 years. In 2015 six scholarships were offered by the AHEPA Family of Winnipeg. The $2,000 Science and Engineering, and the new $1,500 Archimedes scholarship were not awarded this year, as no applicants met all the requirements for each of these scholarships. The following scholarship recipients were announced on October 24th, 2015 at the OXI Day Banquet. In 25 years ( ), 96 AHEPA scholarships amounting to $126,000 have been awarded to 74 worthy students. A few individuals contributing a few hundred dollars per year can sustain a scholarship for a long time! Scholarships could also be another meaningful way to remember a loved one or be a part of your estate planning. 29

30 KEFI Dancers (Senior, Junior, Adult) Dance Classes for the 2015/2016 Season: Psarakia (grades 1-3) and Delfinakia (grades 4-6) will continue to have dance class during Greek School. If your child is NOT registered in Greek School and would like to participate in dance classes, please contact the Greek School for exact practice times for each grade. Jr. Kefi (grades 7-11): Classes will be Sundays from 6-7pm in the MHCC multipurpose room, unless otherwise noted. Registration fee is $50 per student. There will be no Junior Kefi dance practices in December. Dance practice will start again January 17, Happy Holidays! Please contact Agapi Katrakis at or if you are unable to attend dance practice. If less than four (4) dancers are available, dance practice will be cancelled. The Jr. Kefi assistant instructor for this year is Sam Korantzopoulos. If yes, we want them! The Greek Community of Winnipeg will be celebrating 100 years of incorporation in the City of Winnipeg. As part of the commemoration of this community milestone we are gathering photographs showcasing our wonderful community to be part of a Community Archive. The photos may be print or digital copies. All print copies will be returned once scanned. Thank you! GREEK FOLK COSTUMES Our community prides itself on having an extensive collection of authentic Greek folk costumes. These costumes are worn by our community groups for dance performances, as well as at events while representing our community. We would like to expand this collection, particularly the costumes for our youth. Currently, we have a limited number of costumes that will fit this age group, and we have an increasing interest from the kids to wear costumes during their dance performances. If you have a costume that you would like to donate to the community for use by community groups, such as Kefi and Greek School, please drop them off in the church office with the Office Administrator. All sizes and regions are welcome!
