Page 2 The Chalice January April 2015 Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. My beloved in Christ, Happy New Year! Christmas and New Year s are celebrations in which families give and receive gifts. It s a joy to finish one year and receive another new one. Parents are busy giving their children a gift and making them feel good during these holidays and on their birthdays. God, too, has not been sitting idle, but has given us the very best gift. Maybe it s not exactly what we wanted, but it was what we really needed Jesus Christ who has brought a great change into our life that was being destroyed by sin. The gift from God is Jesus Christ who brings peace and pardon to our life, joy and happiness in moments when we thought all was lost. He has given us not only Jesus Christ, but also the chance to begin another new year, 2015, thus giving us the opportunity to carry out our projects we have on our agenda. My beloved brothers and sisters don t forget to put God on your agenda of activities. Remember that He is our Father and He wants to keep on guarding and protecting you as His child. The New Year also is a time to improve as an individual and as a church family. We should not focus on failures but on the opportunities to make things better in your life through God; and as a church family, we look for opportunities to grow together spiritually as one family in the Body of Christ. With a new season, it is an opportunity to make things better. There are opportunities for families who can look back to see things didn t go too well. All too often, we are hard on ourselves. Forgive yourself! The Church is here to help you! Know that you have God in your life. Let your words, thoughts, and deeds reflect your love in Christ! Through Him, we have an opportunity to be better husbands, wives, fathers and mothers. As humans, we make promises great and small not always knowing whether we can deliver on them, however much we may desire. What differentiates us from God is that we can trust Him to keep His promises. Adam and Eve discovered to their dismay that the consequence of disobedience was indeed death, as promised. God followed that with a second promise to crush the serpent that colluded with them, leading to their death. Adam and Eve did not live to see the second promise fulfilled. Many succeeding generations were born and died without seeing it. But in the fullness of time Jesus Christ came, taking on our first parents death and the death of all succeeding generations, summing up in Himself all humanity, leaving out none of us. So in the death of Jesus all mankind died, and His resurrection put the world right before God. That is the good news we are invited to believe. That good news accepted in faith continues to work out the new order of Christ in our lives. God s promise in Christ spans the life remaining of this world; it gives hope each day that He who began His new work in us will bring it to completion at the time of our Lord s return. Happy New Year and a blessed lifetime! Yours in Christ, + From Your Priest s Desk

Page 3 The Chalice January April 2015 Parish Council President s Message Fellow Parishioners: As the New Year begins, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year! I would like to congratulate newly elected Board members Angela Koutsouris, Gus Kakavas, and Al Peters. I would also like to thank outgoing Board members Tony Verikios, Tommy Parlapanides and Eva Chryssanthakopoulos for their dedication and service to Saint Barbara. From September 26-28, 2014, Saint Barbara held its annual festival. It was a big success. Total revenue was comparable to last year s record setting revenue totals. There were many volunteers, great publicity and marketing, the festival ad journal did very well, the weather was great and the crowds were very large. Thank you to the Saint Barbara community who worked at the festival, the festival committee and its Chairman Sotiris Sergiou, the ad journal Chairman Tasos Papanikolas, the sponsors of the festival and all the delicious food donated by area diners and restaurants. We showcased our religion, heritage, Greek dancing, Greek pastries, food, and the Greek spirit. On December 14, 2014, the wonderful Christmas pageant put all of us in the Christmas spirit. Many children participated in the pageant which is always good to see. All of us also enjoyed the Christmas brunch that followed the pageant. Many thanks are extended to the PTO, the organizers of the pageant, all of our children who practiced many hours and to all the parents. The AHEPA Family sponsored the New Year s Eve party which was well attended. There was a band, mezzedakia, dancing, champagne, a cash bar and vasilopita. The drawing for the Ford Mustang has been extended to June 22, Please see any Parish Council member for tickets. The concert performance by Basile the Comedian at the Parish Athletic Center has not been established as of the writing of this article but stay tuned for details. The annual PTO Glendi will take place on February 7, Also, the fashion show will take place on May 8, 2015 at the Ramada s Versailles Ballroom. The fashion show is chaired by Theodora Sergiou and is a wonderful event that is very successful for the Church. The Parish Athletic Center is getting a lot use and not just by the Church s tenants. The GOYA basketball team, the youth basketball team and the GOYA volleyball team are practicing and hosting games at the PAC. Saint Barbara will be hosting the State playoffs for basketball and volleyball on January 10, Please cheer on our GOYA and youth teams. Also, the GOYA will be hosting a volleyball tournament fundraiser on Saturday, January 24th, 2015 at the Parish Athletic Center. The details are in the registration forms. All are welcome, young and old. I am looking forward to another productive and successful year at Saint Barbara with all of the Saint Barbara community working together for the continued success of our Church. Lou Karagias, Parish Council President

Page 4 The Chalice January April 2015 ~PARISH NEWS~ PHILOPTOCHOS Love in Action Let All That You do Be Done With Love In November the Ladies of Philoptochos were very thankful at Thanksgiving for the love of our families and the love of our St. Barbara family. Among our blessings was a very successful Gift Auction which was enjoyed by everyone attending and which was successful because of the generous donations of many of our parishioners and outside contributors and because of the time put in by cochairs Cindy Lobman and Presbytera Donna and all of the ladies who wrapped the presents, baked the pastries, decorated the tables and gifts and those who came to help that night. We are grateful to all of you because with the proceeds from this event, we are able to help our Parish s needs and the needs of those who come to us for help continuously during the year and all our outreach programs outside of our community. We are also constantly visiting the shut-ins and assisting the aged and those who are ill or suffering and especially at this time of the year we offer our time and our love and monetary assistance to those who need it so desperately. December brought us the celebration of the Vesper Services of St. Barbara on Dec. 3 rd with his Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos officiating along with many priests from surrounding churches and followed by our beautiful Vesper Reception in her Honor which is known to be Exceptional. On St. Barbara s Name day we also had a wonderful luncheon reception after the Liturgy which was also attended by several priests from surrounding parishes, our own parishioners and many visitors. Costa Cousoulis was our chef in the kitchen, and with the help of Andrea Kaiafas, he once again served us a very delicious and enjoyable lunch. Our grateful thanks to him. We hope you all had a Blessed a Healthy and Merry Christmas. We also brought from the Ayia Skepi Monastery, with the help of Violetta and Demo Mageros, the delicious vasilopitas which were sold the two weeks before New Year s and which we all enjoyed at our St. Barbara s New Year s Eve Party, and also on January 5 4th when we hosted our Vasilopita Reception by the cutting of a piece of the Big Vasilopita by Father Paul for each of the Ministries and organizations. From January to March, we conduct our Annual Membership Drive. Please consider joining us and helping in any way you can. February 9 th we host the St. Haralambos Vesper Reception and on February 10 th we host the St. Haralambos Luncheon. St. Haralambos is a very special saint to all of us and we are always happy to be able to host the celebration of this beloved saint. March brings us to the period of Lent and preparation for Easter with our Epitaphio and special collection and preparation for Holy Week with the decoration of the Church, the Epitaphio, the Crucifixion and Anastasi Wreaths, the Friday Salutations Icons, as well as the dyeing and wrapping of the red Easter eggs for the Anastasi and Agape services. There are so many beautiful and emotional spiritual events coming up that we all look forward to with much anticipation to share with all of you. May God bless our Parish and all of you. Yours in Christ, Dee Linardakis, Philoptochos President GREEK LANGUAGE & CULTURE SCHOOL NEWS HAPPY NEW YEAR! HRONIA POLLA! Greek School year has started off well. Fifty two (52) children enrolled and they seem to be very excited to learn the Greek language, culture and traditions. This year we do not have Kindergarten and Sixth Grade classes. The teachers, kiria Theano and myself, are working very hard and conscientiously to achieve the best results. We had our first program on October 26 for OXI Day celebration. The students of Second and Fifth Grades participated and did an outstanding job. Our next program will be on Sunday, January 25 th, right after the Divine Liturgy for the Three Hierarchs and Greek Letters Day celebration. Poems will be recited by the First Third and Fourth Grades. The next program will be on Sunday, March 22nd for the celebration of Greek Independence Day. All students will participate. Mid-January the students will have their tests and at the end of the month will receive their Report Cards, Achievement Awards and Attendance Awards. Congratulations to all students for receiving awards. Keep up the good work!

Page 5 The Chalice January April 2015 We are very happy to report that the students attendance is excellent. We emphasize the importance of regular attendance for the children s progress, as well as the help and interest shown by the parents for their children s homework. We thank all the parents for taking the time to bring their children to Greek school and all the people for helping and supporting our school. Stavroula Panas Greek School Supervisor SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS And for every child there is a purpose The 1st quarter of Sunday school was busy; our classroom sizes have grown considerably and our teachers have been extra busy, not only with preparing their lessons but also preparing themselves spiritually attending religious seminars presented by the Metropolis of New Jersey, studying for certifications, and monthly meetings to discuss the Sunday school curriculum. Our pledge and top priority is to make sure our children are receiving the best Orthodox education possible. On a lighter note; the children received a special visit from Senior Airman Georgette Kyriacou. In the beginning of October each classroom wrote special cards and prayers to Georgette while she was on assignment. When Georgette returned home she came to church to talk to the children. She expressed her sincere thanks for all the cards and prayers. Georgette personally visited each classroom; she brought special flag pins to give to each child, which they wore proudly. Welcome Home Georgette and God Bless you for your service to Our Country! In November, a time to give thanks; the children participated in the Good Smarten Shoe box Program. Giving and sharing as Orthodox Christians is an important part of our Sunday school curriculum; to know that somewhere in the world a less fortunate child will receive a gift for Christmas is truly a blessing. December was the Christmas pageant, if you were not able to attend you missed a beautiful program. Under the direction of Chrysanthe Patestos and Penny Golinski, the children were taught Christmas songs; through costumes and music, the Christmas Story was presented to our congregation. As Orthodox Christians we celebrate the holly season to remember what Christmas is about; the Birth of our savior Jesus Christ. The beautifully written Christmas music help us remember the same; thank you Chrysanthe and Penney. Our good wishes for a speedy recovery go to our first grade teacher Lucy Russo hurry back Lucy, we miss you. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year, until next time God s Love, Barbra Chryssanthakopoulos Sunday School Director P.T.O. Greetings and Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!!! It is hard to believe that another year has gone by, but we were blessed with a great and successful 2014!!! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parishioners and PTO members for supporting our functions and making a difference in our ministry. We finished our year with our Christmas Pageant and Brunch, which like always was amazing with our children reenacting and glorifying the Birth of Christ. Our annual PTO trip this year will be in NYC to see Aladdin on Broadway on January 10th. This is the time where families come together to have fun and create memories and friendships that would last a lifetime!!! The tradition of the Three Hierarchs Celebration will be honored once again on January 30th at the St. George church in Ocean Township. The children from both parishes will perform their poems followed by a dinner reception at their banquet hall. Let's not forget our largest PTO fundraiser of the year... the GLENDI!!!! The ladies of the PTO work very hard to organize and execute a fun but profitable evening for the entire family. In order though to achieve our goal, we are going to need the help and support of all our parishioners in any way possible. Donations are greatly welcomed as we prepare our baskets for the auction. With this year's theme of a LUAU, we will transform our church hall for a night into a sunny, warm Hawaiian beach front. It will be a great and fun night with music and dancing, food, gifts and so much more. Don't MISS IT!!!!

Page 6 The Chalice January April 2015 March marks Greek Independence Day where we have the Greek school celebration program and the raising of the flag outside the church. As Holy Week approaches in April, we will be busy preparing for our Lenten brunch and other fun filled activities for the children on Saturday of Lazarus along with the palm folding. With so much to plan and accomplish, I am looking forward to a new and prosperous year, and I encourage you to become a PTO member and make a difference in your child's life. Thank you ALL for your continued love and support and may the new year continue to fill your lives with God's Love!!! Best Wishes Always, Marina Papanikolas, PTO President GOYA Happy New Year, I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas! Back in September, the GOYA Lemonade Stand was a hit and I would like to thank all GOYAns, parents, and other volunteers that helped keep the stand running smoothly all weekend. Along with the festival, the GOYAns have participated in the Mr. and Miss GOYA Pageant where George Roeber competed for Mr. GOYA: Congratulations George! And for the first time in Saint Barbara history, one of our female GOYAns won Miss GOYA, an honor for our parish. We also participated in both the Harvest and Bowling dances, and had another successful Thanksgiving Bake Sale in the past couple of months. December was a busy month for the GOYA beginning with our participation with the Bridges Outreach Program on the 12th, preparing meals for the homeless at Saint George in Trenton and the next day some of our senior GOYAns were able to be a part of delivering these bags to the less fortunate; it was truly a humbling experience. On December 19, we had our annual Christmas Caroling and Party, which was of course a success; thank you to all who welcomed us in during caroling and offered us food and beverages to helped spread holiday cheer, we really appreciate it! Lastly, I would like to thank all who donated baked goods to our Christmas Cookie sale; we could not have done it without the help! We are ringing in the new year with a GOYA meeting on January 16th where we plan on finalizing all details to the numerous fundraisers we have in store for the whole community to take part in, starting on the 24th with our Volleyball Fundraiser which will include teams from various groups of our parish such as GOYA, PTO, Philoptochos, etc. With the Sights and Sounds Festival quickly approaching, we plan to immediately begin practices for the different sounds we will be presenting at Sights and Sounds as well as continuing on with our weekly Greek dance practices which also prepare for this upcoming date. February kicks off with the Valentine s Dance in Wyckoff on the 6th along with the continuation of our Sights and Sounds practices, since the date is closer than we think. On February 20th is our monthly meeting, where we plan to discuss further fundraisers and events for our GOYAns to take part in over the next couple of months. March is here, so you know what that means... Sights and Sounds in Westfield! This year the event will be taking place on March 7th. For those who are unaware about what Sights and Sounds is, this event is an entire day devoted to the GOYAns and showing their talents. From Greek dance, American singing, Greek play, choral speaking, and so much more, this is a day for us all to showcase our talents all while having fun with friends from all over the state. We practice for months to perfect our performances, since this might be the most anticipated event of the GOYA season. The next Friday will be our March meeting to discuss our GOYA Coffee hour on the 29th as well as possible fundraisers for us to execute during the Lenten season. The GOYA season is in full swing and I am ecstatic with all we have accomplished over the past few months and I think I can also speak for the Executive Board when I say that we cannot wait to see how much more we can accomplish over the next couple months. KALI PAREA Chloe Genakos GOYA President I can't believe that we are now in our thirtieth year. Where have the years gone? We are still meeting at our church hall every Wednesday from 11 am till 3 pm. We are looking for new members to join us. Our membership dues are still $10.00 a year and $3.00 weekly fee.

Page 7 The Chalice January April 2015 We look forward to starting the year with the cutting of the Vasilopita at our first meeting in January. There will be luncheons for Valentine's Day in February, St. Patrick's Day in March and our pre - Easter Lenten in April. If we get enough people there could also be trips to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, Atlantic City and Sights and Sound. Hopefully when you read this article we will have a new board of officers.

Page 17 The Chalice January April 2015 HOLY HUMOUR While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign: "Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust." ======== A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. "Reverend," said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip." The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business." ======== People want the front of the bus, the back of the church, and the center of attention. ======== Sunday after church, a mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, "Don't be scared, you'll get your quilt." Needless to say, the mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the mom asked him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was about. He said "Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming." ======== The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

Page 18 The Chalice January April 2015 Orthodox Prayer for the Self: Orthodox Prayers to Remember Lord, into the hands of Thy great mercy I commend my body and soul, thoughts and acts, desires and intentions, needs of my body and soul, arrival and departure, my faith and hope. To Thee I commend the end of my life, the day and hour of my expiration, the repose of my soul and the resurrection of my body. Do Thou, O Most Merciful God, O gentle Lord, Whose clemency is ever unconquered by the sins of the world, take me, who am more sinful than all others, under the wings of Thy protection, and deliver me from all evil. Cleanse the great multitude of my iniquities, grant the reformation of my wicked and hardened life, and ever defend me against approaching evil transgressions, that I in no manner ever anger Thee. Shelter my weakness from passion and evil men; guard me against visible and invisible enemies, lead me on the road to salvation and to Thyself, Who art my harbor and the heaven of my desires. Grant me a shameless, peaceful Christian death, protect me from evil spirits, be merciful to me, Thy servant, on Thy last judgment, and number me among the blessed flock on Thy right, that together with them I may glorify Thee, my Creator, forever. Amen. Orthodox Prayer before a Journey: O Lord Jesus Christ our God, the true and living way, be Thou, O Master, my companion, guide, and guardian during my journey; deliver and protect me from all danger, misfortune, and temptation, that being so defended by Thy divine power I may have a peaceful and successful journey and arrive safely at my destination. For in Thee I put my trust and hope, and to Thee, together with Thine Eternal Father and the All-Holy Spirit, I ascribe all praise, honor, and glory, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Orthodox prayer for a child when he begins school: O Lord our God and Creator, who hast honored men with Thine own image; who hast taught Thine elect, so that most wise are they who give heed to Thy teaching; who revealest wisdom unto babes; who hast imparted Thy teaching unto Solomon and unto all who have sought Thy wisdom: Open Thou the heart, the mind, and the lips of this Thy servant, (Name), that he/she may receive the power of Thy law, and understand the knowledge which shall be taught him/her, to the glory of Thine all-holy Name, to the profit and building up of Thy holy Church, and that he/she may comprehend Thy good and perfect will. Deliver him/her from every hostile oppression; preserve him/her in the Orthodox faith, and in holiness all the days of his/her life, that he/she may increase in wisdom and in the fulfilling of Thy commandments, that being thus prepared he/she may glorify Thine all-holy Name and become an heir of Thy kingdom. For Thou art God, mighty in mercy, and gracious in strength, and unto Thee is due glory: To the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner.
