When he lived in Chicago he served as general secretary, vice president and president of the Cretan Fraternity of Chicago & Suburbs. On a national level, he serves as the PAA s representative in Crete. He and his wife Sonia have been married for 39 years and have two sons, George and Manolis. George and his wife, Yulie Grigoraki, gave them a grandson named Ippokratis. 2. HARRY MARK PETRAKIS Harry has authored more than 23 novels, short stories and memoirs. He was twice nominated for the National Book Award in fiction, and his work has been adapted for television and film. His best-selling novel, A Dream of Kings, became a major motion picture. In 2014, the PAA awarded Harry the Kazantzakis Award for his significant contributions to literature. 3. HELENE SEMANDERES Helene is a member of the editorial board of KPHTH Magazine. She is also an active member of her local chapter, Arkadi-Maleme of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she has served as president and has directed the club s dance groups for over 20 years. CAROL TRAVAYIAKIS Carol was born and raised in Heraklion, Crete, and has been active in the Greek American community of Boston and the PAA for 30 years. At the local level, Carol was a member of the Boston Asterion II Youth Chapter and the Rathamanthus-Ide Chapter of Boston where she served as board member, secretary, and twoterm president. She also helped plan the 34th PAA Convention. At the national level, Carol served as general secretary, Trustee of the University of Crete Endowment Fund, and as Women s Executive Director. Carol is employed at Genzyme Corporation. She resides in Boston with her husband, Kosta, her children, Lefteri and Marina, and their respective families. 4 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Christos Anesti John Sargetis PAA President j.sargetis@comcast.net Dear Members and Friends: From my family to yours, we wish you a blessed Easter holiday. Christos Anesti kai Xronia Polla! Our rich Easter traditions, which stem from our Greek Orthodox faith, have been around for more than 2000 years. I hope that your families continue to pass on those traditions to the younger generations. In this issue, we pay homage to the Easter Holiday with an article from Father Robert Archon. In addition, we highlight the work of many Cretans who have chosen to serve our church, including stories about four archbishops of Cretan decent, Iconographer George Filippakis, and an homage to the recent passing of the head abbot of Arkadi Monastery, Archimandrite Anthimos Kalpakis. The PAA s Kazantzakis award winner, author Harry Mark Petrakis, has also written a remembrance of his family s immigration story from Crete to Salt Lake City, Utah, where his father first served as a Greek Orthodox Priest in America. PAA Convention Salt Lake City June 27 to July 2 If you have not yet made plans to attend our National Convention in Salt Lake City from Sunday, June 27, to Thursday, July 2, or if you are still thinking about it, I encourage you to attend. Even if your schedule allows you to be there for only a few days, I promise you will not regret going and will come away having had one of the best times of your life. Please look at the last eight pages of this magazine for all the details about the convention or visit the convention website at PAASLC2015.ORG for more details. This convention is your best opportunity to impart our Cretan culture and heritage on your children and grandchildren. As parents or grandparents, you have spent tens of thousands of dollars on their education. For about $1,500 for airfare, hotel and the youth package, your child or grandchild will, in the six days of the convention, experience Cretan culture, history and spirit they won t find anywhere else outside of Crete. If you are reading this message and our magazine, then I know our Cretan history, culture and heritage are important to you. You must want your children and grandchildren to be proud of everything it means to be a descendant of Crete. Send them to this convention and come yourselves! We want our youth to have a great time and dance all night! That s how I got hooked on the PAA during my first convention in Pittsburgh in the 1970s. At this convention our youth and adults will see and experience firsthand where a large segment of Cretans immigrated to in the early part of 20th century, including my father. Many Cretans settled in the coal mining towns of Utah and toiled day in and day out, risking their lives for a dollar a day to send back money to the old country to support their poor families in the villages of Crete. I believe it s important for our youth, who are so blessed and fortunate to be born in America, to see what their ancestors encountered when they came to Utah and other towns across America, where nearly all of them worked in mines, steel mills and factories. Many artifacts of these early years are displayed at the museum at the Cathedral in Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City chapters, along with the PAA, have planned rich cultural programs every day and night that offer our members and their families new insights on our heritage. 5 ΜΉΝΥΜΑ ΠΡΟΈΔΡΟΥ Χριστός Ανέστη Αγαπητά μέλη και φίλοι, ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ και ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ Εύχομαι εσείς οι οικογένειές σας να είχατε υγιές, χαρούμενο και ευτυχισμένο Πάσχα! Οι πλούσιες για πάνω από χρόνια παραδόσεις του Πάσχα, προέρχονται από από την Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη πίστη μας. Ελπίζω ότι οι οικογένειες σας θα συνεχίσουν να περνάνε αυτές τις παραδόσεις στις νεότερες γενιές. Σε αυτό το τεύχος, αναφερόμαστε στήν εορτή τής Ανάστασης με ένα άρθρο από τον Πατέρα Χαράλαμπο Αρχοντάκη. Επιπλέον, παρουσιάζομε το έργο πολλών Κρητικών, οι οποίοι έχουν επιλέξει να υπηρετήσουν την εκκλησία μας, συμπεριλαμβανομένων αρθρων απο την ζωή και το έργο του αγιογράφου Γιώργου Φιλιππάκη, τεσσάρων αρχιεπισκόπων Κρητικής καταγωγής και ένα αφιέρωμα στην πρόσφατη αποδύμηση στον Κύριο τού Ηγουμένου τής Μονής Αρκαδίου, Αρχιμανδρίτου Άνθιμου Καλπάκη. Συμπεριλάβαμε επισης ενα αρθρο, ανάμνηση της μετανάστευσης τής οικογένειας τού συγγραφέα Χάρη Μαρκ Πετράκη και παραλήπτη του Καζαντζάκιου βραβείου τής Παγκρητικής. Το αρθρο αναφέρεται στην ιστορία του πατέρα του, ως πρώτος στο Σολτ Λέικ Σίτι, Γιούτα, Κρητικος και Ελληνας Ορθόδοξος Ιερέας στην Αμερική. Συνέδριο ΠΕΑ στο Σόλτ Λέικ Σίτι - 27 Ιουνίου με 2 Ιουλίου Αγαπητοί συμπατριώτες και συμπατριώτισσες, αν δεν έχετε ακόμη κάνει σχέδια για να παρευρεθήτε στο Συνέδριο τής Παγκρητικής στο Σόλτ Λέικ Σίτι το οποίο θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τήν Κυριακή 27 Ιουνίου έως Πέμπτη 2 Ιουλίου, ή εάν το σκέφτεστε ακόμη, σάς παροτρύνω να μήν αργοπορείτε. Ακόμη και αν το πρόγραμμά σας, δεν σάς επιτρέπει για ολη την εβδομάδα, σάς υπόσχομαι οτι δεν θα μετανιώσετε να παρευθειτε εστω και για λίγες μέρες, γιατι πιστέψτεμε θα ειναι μία από τις καλύτερες εμπειρίες της ζωής σας. Παρακαλώ κοιτάξτε τίς τελευταίες 8 σελίδες αυτού του τεύχους για πληροφορίες ή στην ιστοσελίδα «PAASLC2015.ORG» για περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες. Εάν δεν μπορείτε να παρευρεθείτε εσείς προσωπικά, αλλά έχετε παιδιά ή εγγόνια που δεν έχουν πάει ποτέ σε συνέδριο τής ΠΕΑ, τώρα είναι η καλύτερη ευκαιρία για να τα φέρετε σε επαφή με την κληρονομιά και τον κρητικό πολιτισμό μας. Ως γονείς ή παππούδες έχετε ξοδεύσει ή σκοπεύετε να ξοδεψετε δεκάδες χιλιάδες δολάρια για την μόρφωσή τους. Αλλά για περίπου $ σε αεροπορικό εισιτήριο, ξενοδοχείο και το πακέτο τών εκδηλώσεων, για 6 ημέρες, η εμπειρία που θα αποκτήσει το παιδί ή το εγγόνι σας πάνω στον πολιτισμό, την ιστορία και το Κρητικό πνεύμα θα ειναι ανεκτίμητη. Εάν διαβάζετε το μήνυμά μου αυτό στο περιοδικό ΚΡΗΤΗ, τότε ξέρω οτι η Κρητική ιστορία, ο πολιτισμός και η κληρονομιά μας είναι σημαντικά για σάς. Θα πρέπει να θέλετε τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια σας να είναι περήφανα για ό, τι σημαίνει να είσαι απόγονος της Κρήτης. Στείλτε τα σε αυτό το συνέδριο και ελάτε κι εσεις! Τα συνέδρια δεν είναι μόνο για διασκέδαση χωρίς αυτο να σημαινει οτι ειναι λάθος. Θέλομε η Νεολαία μας να διασκεδάσει και να χορέψει όλη τη νύχτα! Αυτός ηταν ο λογος που προσκολήθηκα στην Παγκρητική απο την πρώτη μου φορα στο συνέδριο του Πίτσμπουργκ στήν δεκαετια τού 70. Στο Συνέδριο του Σολτ Λέικ Σίτι νεοι και ενήλικες θα δουν και θα γνωρίσουν από κοντά, το μέρος όπου ένα μεγάλο τμήμα των Κρητών που μετανάστευσαν στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα, όπως ο πατέρας μου, εγκαταστάθηκαν σε πόλεις της Γιούτα και εργάστηκαν στα ορυχεία διακινδυνεύοντας καθημερινώς την ζωή τους με πληρωμή ένα δολάριο την ημέρα για να στείλουν χρήματα και να βοηθήσουν τίς οικογένειές τους στην Κρήτη. Πιστεύω ότι είναι σημαντικό για τους νέους μας, που είχαν την τύχη να γεννηθούν στην Αμερική και έχουν την ευκαιρία να μορφωθούν και να εκπληρώσουν τα όνειρά τους εδώ, να δούν το τι οι πρόγονοί τους αντιμετώπισαν όταν ήρθαν στην Αμερική, που ως γνωστον το σύνολο σχεδόν αυτων δούλεψε σκληρά σε ορυχεία και εργοστάσια. Αξίζει να έρθετε στην Γιούτα ισως έστω και μόνο για να δείτε το μουσείο στο καθεδρικό ναό.. Οι σύλλογοι του Σολτ Λέικ Σίτι, μαζί με την ΠΕΑ έχουν οργανώσει πλούσια πολιτιστικά προγράμματα μέρα και νύχτα καθ όλη την διάρκεια τής παραμονής μας και σας διαβεβαιώ οτι και η Νεολαία μας αλλά και οι οικογένειές τους θα αποκτήσουν νέα αντίληψη για την κληρονομιά μας. This year marks the beginning of my clinical rotations in hospitals and clinics, and as such requires extra purchases, including purchasing medical equipment and study tools for rotations, as well as paying for my USMLE Step 2 exams. With your help, I am able to purchase the necessary study tools for my hospital rotations that have been invaluable for my education. Θα ήθελα να εκφράσω ένα εγκάρδιο «Ευχαριστώ» στις οικογένειες Μανουσάκη και Βαρουχάκη, των οποίων τα κληροδοτήματα προς τιμήν των γονέων τους θα είναι πάντα, ακόμα και μετά από την αποφοίτησή μου από το Πανεπιστήμιο Rutgers, μέρος της ζωής μου. Θα ήθελα επίσης να ευχαριστήσω την κ. Μία Μπούτζουκα και ολόκληρη την Επιτροπή για την αφοσίωσή τους στην επιλογή των υποψηφίων για τις υποτροφίες Βενιζέλιον Οι πολυάριθμες υποτροφίες της Π.Ε.Α. είναι μια απόδειξη της φιλανθρωπίας όλων των μελών της οργάνωσης. Αντωνακάκης Dear President John Sargetis, It is with immense gratitude and appreciation that I write this letter to you and the PAA Venizelion Scholarship committee today. I am honored to have been selected to receive both the Demetrios & Eleni Manousakis and George & Hedwig Varouh scholarships. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Manousakis and Varouh families, the testament in honor of their respective parents legacies will always be part of my life beyond Rutgers University. I would also like to thank Mrs. Mia Boutzoukas and her committee for their dedication in selecting the recipients of the 2014 Venizelion Scholarships. The numerous PAA scholarships are a testament of philanthropy of so many members. Their financial support expands the opportunities available to my generation to enhance our lives through higher education. Having had the opportunity to be the first in my family to serve the PYA means a great deal to me. My Cretan heritage is an encompassing part of my life and one reason I believe to always give more than I receive, my hope is to remain active in the PAA and to someday be blessed to leave a testament of my own for the education of future generations. This award has given me a great deal of enthusiasm and pride, which will propel me forward as I complete my final few semesters as an undergraduate at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. 12 Κυριακή του Πάσχα ΤΟΥ ΠΑΤΕΡΑ ΧΑΡΑΛΑΜΒΟΥ ΑΡΧΟΝΤΑΚΗ βαριά πέτρα του τάφου έχει πέσει. Κυλίστηκε πολύ H νωρίς από το μνήμα. Δε μπορούσε να κρατήσει για πάντα τον Αθάνατο. Οι εχθροί Του νόμισαν πως Τον σκότωσαν, αλλά δεν τοξεύαν οτι εν αυτώ ζωή ην. Νόμισαν πως ο τάφος ήταν το τέλος αλλά δεν κατάλαβαν πως ήταν μια καινούργια σωτήρια αρχή. Έκλεισαν το στόμα εκείνου του πλάνου, μα δεκάδες κι εκατοντάδες άλλα στόματα άνοιξαν για το κήρυγμα του Ναζωραίου. Βάλανε τους ανθρώπους. Η ανομία τον σκέπασε στο μνήμα, μα με την ανάστασή Του ξεσκέπασε την ανομία. Αν η σταύρωση του Ιησού ήταν θεληματικά αδυναμία, η ανάσταση είναι δείγμα της παντοδυναμίας Του. Νικήθηκε από τον Ανίκητο. Που σου θάνατε το κεντρώο; Που σου αδη, το νικος; Με την ανάσταση νικήθηκε ο διάβολος. Κάποτε είχε νικήσει τον πρώτον Αδάμ. Τώρα ο δεύτερος Αδάμ τού σωτηρίας του έχει συντρίψει το κεφάλι. Για τη συντριβή του διάβολου είχε μιλήσει αμέσως μετά την παρακοή ο ίδιος ο Θεός. Αυτός σου τηρήσει κεφαλήν και συ τηρήσεις αυτού πτέρναν (Γεν. Γ 15). Ο απόγονος της δεύτερης Εύας - της Πανάγιας - θα δινε το τελευταίο χτύπημα στο διάβολο, καταστρέφοντας ολότελατη δύναμη του. Γι αυτό ο Θεός αυτόν υπερύψωσε και εχαρίσατο αυτώ όνομα το υπερ παν όνομα (Φιλιπ. Β 9). Είναι νικητής του διάβολου, αλλά και του θανάτου. Είναι ο παντοδύναμος Νεκρεγερτης. Θανάτω θάνατον πατήσας. Ο θάνατός Του έγινε πηγή της αθανασίας. Από τώρα και στο εξής είναι γλυκύ πράγμα να πεθαίνεις εν Κυρίω. Είναι χαρά ν αναπαυεσαι στον Ιησού. Ο θάνατος δεν είναι πια εξορία. Είναι επιστροφή στο χαρούμενο σπίτι μας, εκεί που όλα χαίρουν και τραγουδούν και πανηγυρίζουν. Από τώρα ο θάνατος δεν είναι παρά η σκάλα του Ιακώβ, που το κάτω μέρος της είναι στο σκοτεινό τάφο, αλλά η κορυφή της φτάνει αιώνια δόξα τ ουρανού. Η ανάσταση του Κυρίου είναι η πιο μεγάλη νίκη στην ιστορία των ανθρώπων. Είναι ο θρίαμβος της δικαιοσύνης. Είναι του θανάτου η νέκρωση, του Άδη η καθαίρεση. Είναι η απαρχή μιας καινούργιας ζωής. Νυν πάντα πεπλήρωται φωτός, ουρανός τε και γη και τα καταχθονία. Το μεσημβρινό σκοτάδι της Παρασκευής το έχει διαδεχτεί η φωτοπλημμυρα της Κυριακής. Υστερα από τον εκούσιο θάνατο του σταυρού, ακολουθεί η Ανάσταση και η δόξα. Ηγέρθη ο Κυρίος όντως! Χριστός ἀνέστη! Οι καρδίες ας γεμίσουν χαρά. Τα στοματά ας ψάλλουν επινίκιους ύμνους κι ατέλειωτα αρχαγγελικά αλληλούια. Τα χέρια ας υψωθούνε στον ουρανό για να δοξολογήσουν τον Κύριο. Λαμπρυνθώμεν τη πανηγύρι και αλλήλους περιπτυξώμεθα. Ας δώσουμε το φίλημα της αγάπης. Οι εχθροί να δώσουνε τα χέρια με την υπόσχεση μιας καινούργιας αγάπης και φιλίας. Όλοι να

Τώρα γνωρίζουμε πως μας έχει συγχωρήσει, κι άνοιξε διάπλατα τις πύλες της Βασιλείας Του για να μπούμε νικητές. Παρεδόθη δια τα παραπτώματα ημών και ηγέρθη δια την δικαίωσίν ημών. Χριστος Ανέστη! Ο θάνατος, που ποδοπατούσε τις ελπίδες μας και μαδούσε τα όνειρα μας, νικήθηκε. Ένας αντιπρόσωπος των ανθρώπων, ο Θεάνθρωπος, μονομάχησε με το θάνατο. Ουρανός και γη ήταν θεατές της μοναδικής μονομαχίας. Ο θάνατος φαινόταν πανίσχυρος. Ο αντιπρόσωπος των ανθρώπων ματωμένος κι ανίσχυρος κρεμάστηκε στο σταυρό του μαρτυρίου Του. Πέθανε! Αλλά ο θάνατός Του ήταν του θανάτου ο θάνατος. Από τότε το μέλλον είναι δικό μας. Ο ουρανός δικός μας. Η δόξα δική μας. Λυτρωθήκαμε. Σωθήκαμε. Ανακαλύψαμε τις δροσόλουστες πηγές της χαράς. Βρήκαμε το μονοπάτι της βασιλείας του Θεού. Η δικαίωση δεν είναι όνειρο και πόθος. Είναι μια γλυκιά πραγματικότητα. Μια πραγματικότητα που μας εγγυάται τον ουρανό. Τα αρχαιά παρήλθεν, ιδού καινά γέγονε τα πάντα. Τώρα μπορούμε να πολεμήσουμε πιο αποτελεσματικά την αμαρτία. Αμήν. K COVER STORY Holy and Great Pascha REV. FR. ROBERT J. ARCHON The stone which sealed the Tomb of Christ has fallen. The stone was rolled early on Sunday morning. It was unable to contain forever the Eternal One. Christ s enemies thought they had killed Him, but however they failed to realize that in Him is found life. They thought the tomb was the end of the story, the end of Christ, but they failed to comprehend what was in actuality the beginning of the story of salvation. They thought they had closed the mouth of Him Who was one of us, but neither tens nor hundreds were able to quench the mouths which proclaimed the message (Good news) of the Nazarene. They placed guards at the Tomb, but they forgot how He guards all of humanity. Historically iniquity stained the message of salvation, but with the resurrection of Christ, He covers once and for all, iniquity. If the crucifixion of Jesus was a willful weakness, the resurrection is the very example of His omnipotence. He Who descended into the grave is everlasting, but Hades could not contain its power, chants triumphantly the Church. Death has lost its power. Death was conquered by the unconquerable. Where is your sting O Death? Where is your victory O Hades? With the resurrection the Evil One was vanquished. Somewhere however the Evil One was victorious against the first Adam. Now, the Second Adam (Christ) has injured the very head of the evil snake. God immediately responded upon the disobedience of Adam and Eve according to Genesis 3:15...he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. The second Eve, the Panagia has unwritten and undone the Evil One s curse on humankind, according to St. Paul s letter to the Philippians 2:9, Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name. Christ s resurrection was not simply a victory against the Evil One but upon Death itself. He (God) is the all-powerful death defier. By death He conquered death, says the hymn. His death became the source of eternal life. From this time forth all humanity now sleeps in death and regains eternal life. Eternal life is now joyful rest in Christ. Death is no longer a banishment from paradise, but a return to our true joyful home. Where everyone rejoices, sings, and celebrates. From this point forward death is no longer the ladder of Jacob, which the lowest level is a darkened tomb, but rather, the ladder s top appears as the glory of the heavens. The resurrection of the Lord is the greatest victory in human history. It is the victorious celebration of righteousness. It is the death of death, and the annihilation of Hades. Following the passionate death of our Savior Christ on the Cross, follows the Resurrection and the Glory. Christ is Risen! Christ now becomes the Prototype of all humanity, as the GodMan, Who battled with Death. Christ shared in the fullness of humanity and truly died on the Cross and suffered death. From that time forward the heavens are now ours. The Glory ours. We have been redeemed. We have been saved. Righteousness is not simply a dream or desire, but a sweet reality. Let us rejoice as Christ has conquered death by death bestowing life, eternal life to all. Amen. K KPHTH 13

Photo Courtesy Harry Mark Petrakis 14 KPHTH APRIL 2015 hold a browned photograph of my parents and four of my I older brothers and sisters taken shortly before they emigrated to America from the island of Crete in In the seventy years that have passed since then, the countenances in the portrait have remained suspended in time. I inherited the photograph from one of my brothers, and it has hung in the houses where I have lived. Each time I look at it I am reminded that all of life is a mystery that lies not as much in the end as in the beginning. In the portrait my patriarchal father is seated in an armchair, his family clustered beside him. He wears the anklelength black cassock and high black stovepipe hat which were the raiment of Greek Orthodox priests in that period. His black hair flows into a black, bushy beard. His eyes are unwavering and vigilant, as if he understands he is the guardian of his flock. Suspended from a chain around his neck hangs the golden cross I saw him wearing for the last time in his coffin thirty-five years later. My mother, short and small, stands close beside him. She was then in her early twenties, and her eyes and face radiate a serenity and sweetness. I was born in 1923, and another sister, Irene, was born in As I remember my mother from my childhood, hardship and suffering had carved lines and shadows in her cheeks and about her lips. I can never recall her eyes as tranquil as they appear in the photo. Dan, my brother, was the oldest of the children. His hair is cropped short and razor-cut above his ears. He wears a white shirt and an oversized tie that dangles so far below his belt and pants it seems part of a clown s apparel. He has the bright, curious stare of a youth surveying new wonders. Beside him, perhaps perched on a box or chair because she s a head taller than Dan, is my sister Barbara. Her abundant hair frames her extraordinarily large and lucent eyes. The curls falling across her shoulders look fair, although I remember her hair darker later on. Above her head, a large white ribbon billows like a wind-blown sail. The remaining two children, my sister Tasula and my brother Manuel, appear much younger and smaller although they are separated from the other children by only a few years. Manuel has hair as curly and long as Tasula. She wears a white frock, he a white sailor suit. Both wear white button shoes and white ankle-length socks. But it is their eyes, innocent and comely, that resemble one another as if they were twins. When the photograph was taken in Crete, they were on the eve of their voyage across the ocean to America. My father had been offered a community in Price, Utah, comprised of young immigrant Cretan coal miners. They had built a church and required a priest. My father could provide them a link to the families and church they had left in Greece, but he and my mother suffered over the decision whether to leave Crete. Their greatest fears were for their children. Yet it was because of the children, and particularly the educational opportunities they felt America would provide for them, that they made the decision for the journey. My family posed for the final photograph, leaving it as a keepsake for parents, siblings and friends they were leaving. Afterwards they traveled from Crete to Piraeus, the port of Athens, and boarded a ship for America. Although the conditions and the duration of the crossings had improved over those journeys made in the earlier part of the century, there were still hardships. The children developed a form of ship s fever and Dan suffered from a severe dysentery. There were several frightening lifeboat alerts when German U-boats were detected watching them. (A week before their departure, a U-boat had fired on and damaged an American freighter.) They also endured a fierce storm that rocked their ship with huge waves. They spent almost all of a night in their small cabin, huddled together in prayer, my mother telling me

15 ΡΕΠΟΡΤΑΖ later, certain we were going to die, our bodies lost forever in the sea. When their ship entered New York harbor, they first saw the imposing Statue of Liberty. The passengers crowded the rails to view it, many weeping and kneeling to say their prayers, a few who knew the lines from the poem by Emma Lazarus repeating them to others. At different times in the years that followed, I heard my mother and brother and sister speak of their first sight of the statue. I felt grateful she was a woman, my mother said. I felt she would understand a woman s heart. I wondered what she was holding, my sister Barbara said. Then I recognized it as a torch like the Olympians carried in ancient Greece. I had read in school about the Colossus of Rhodes, my brother Dan said. I thought this must be the Colossus of America. Many years later, in a letter written to me less than six months before he died, Dan mentioned a dream in which he had seen the statue. Perhaps, nearing the end of his life, his spirit returned to what he recalled as the beginning of his life in America. But my family s entrance into America wasn t without stress and fear. Even after they had passed through the examining areas, the representative from the parish who would escort them back to Utah hadn t arrived. In the confusing exchanges with an inspector and interpreter who knew little more Greek than my father knew English, a decision to detain my family overnight was construed by my father as imprisonment. In his effort to show the officials that he wasn t a pauper and should be allowed to enter the country, my father showed them a gold coin he had carried from Greece. To authenticate its purity, he bit the metal. I saw the coin years later and it seemed to me to reveal a faint indentation from my father s bite. (Or was it the intensity of his emotion I remembered when I saw the coin?) His protests were to no avail. They were sent to the male and female dormitories, my father with the boys, my mother with the girls. It was the first time they had ever been separated. My father would talk later in his life about the first night on Ellis Island as his introduction to democracy. He spent the dark, sleepless hours, frantic about my mother and the girls, hearing the snores and mutterings in strange tongues of strangers in beds around him. When the first traces of dawn lightened the sky, he rose and walked to a window. Through the bars he saw the statue that loomed in the harbor. He saw the statue suddenly as a spiritual incarnation of some ancient, beneficent goddess, sent to console him in his anguish, reassuring him that a fortuitous destiny would prevail. And, later that morning, the escort from Utah arrived and my family entered America. This is the story I remember as I look at the photograph. In the sprawling multiplicity of nationalities and races that make up our nation now, myriad other stories are enclosed in family albums, within similar old pictures, in diaries, journals and letters. They symbolize the triumph of diversity, the persistence of a dream, the longing for a sanctuary of green leaves and of peace, of an education for one s children, and the free worship of one s faith. All of life, my father often said, was a miracle we must try to deserve each day. And the greatest miracle in his life, he told us, was to have brought his family to America. The miracle renders insignificant the ephemeral glitter of celebrations, the minting of medallions and the plethora of gaudy and tawdry souvenirs with which we mark these events. These have nothing to do with the vision my father saw from the barred window of his compound on that misted dawn seventy years ago. He sensed the meaning of the great statue clearly then, and that is the dream each of us, sons and daughters of immigrants, grandsons and granddaughters of immigrants, must renew and fulfill in our own lives. 16 Αγιογραφία, Ιερή Τέχνη Μια ματιά στη ζωή του Αγιογράφου Γεωργίου Φιλιππάκη Γεώργιος Φιλιππάκης γεννήθηκε στο Ηράκλειο τής Ο Κρήτης. Γονείς αυτού ο Κωνσταντίνος Φιλιππάκης απο τα Σταυράκια Ηρακλείου και της Ειρήνης, το γένος Αεράκη απο τα Ανώγεια Μυλοποτάμου, οι οποίοι απέκτησαν 4 παιδιά, τον Γεώργιο και την Μαρία που ειναι δίδυμοι και την Χρυσούλα με τον Γιάννη. Ο Γιώργος ειναι παντρεμένος με την Μαίρη, το γένος Γεωργίου Μπουτσικάκη, απο την Ανώπολη Σφακείων και εχουν ενα γυιο τον Κωνσταντίνο. Τού Γιώργου η αγάπη για την ζωγραφική ξεκίνησε απο τα μαθητικά του χρόνια. Πάντα ζωγράφιζε και αντέγραφε απο τα περίφημα εργα του Μιχαήλ Δαμασκινού δάσκαλου του Ελ Γκρέκο και των αδελφών Καστροφίλακα. Στα έντεκά του χρόνια ζωγράφισε την πρώτη του εικόνα και με χαρά έτρεξε στο σχολείο να την δίξει στην δασκάλα του. Οπως κράταγε την εικόνα και περπατούσε στο δρόμο, τον βλέπει μία τουρίστρια απο την Σουηδία και την αγόρασε. Η χαρά του ηταν απερίγραπτη. Στα δώδεκά του χρόνια γνωρίζεται με τον μεγάλο αγιογράφο Στυλιανό Καρτάκη απο τα Χανιά, ο οποίος εκείνη την εποχή ζωγράφιζε τον Καθεδρικό Ναό τού Αγίου Μηνά στο Ηράκλειο τής Κρήτης. Μαθήτευσε μαζί του για πέντε χρόνια, έμαθε την Κρητική Σχολή Αγιογραφίας και συνέχισε τίς σπουδές του στο Μετσόβειο Πολυτεχνείο Αθηνών. Καί ενώ θητά το Στρατιωτικό του, στα 19 του χρόνια γίνεται διαγωνισμός στην Γεωγραφική Υπηρεσία Στρατού και επιλέγεται απο τον Στρατηγό Κωνσταντίνο Πετρίτη, διοικητής στο Στρατό και του αναθέτη να ζωφραφίσει το Εκκλησάκι του στην ιδιωτική του βίλα στην Αίγινα. Συγχρόνως αναλαμβάνει την εκκλησία της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στην Αίγινα οπως και την δημιουργία φωρητών εικόνων στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Νεκταρίου Αιγίνης. Το 1969 μετά απο πρόσκληση τών γονέων του, έρχεται στην Νέα Υόρκη. Το 1970 κάνει την πρώτη του έκθεση στην Κληρικολαϊκή τής Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής στο Waldorf Astoria, τής Νεας Υορκης. Εκεί αναγνωρίζεται το ταλέντο του και αναλαμβάνει την πρώτη του μεγάλη εργασία, αυτήν του Καθεδρικού Ναού του Αγίου Ιωάννου, Βοστώνης και συνεχίζει την λαμπρή του καριέρα μέχρι σήμερα, έχοντας στο ενεργητικό του πάνω απο 60 εκκλησίες. Εργα του βρίσκονται σε ολη την Αμερική, Αλάσκα, Καναδά, Αυστραλία ακόμα και στην Κινα. Κατόπιν εντολής τού Παναγιωτάτου Πατριάρχου Βαρθολομαίου, ο Γιώργος Φιλιππάκης αναλαμβάνει να ζωγραφίσει τίς πρώτες εικόνες της νεο ιδρυθήσας Μητροπόλεως Νοτίου Ασίας. Εργα του βρίσκονται σε ιδιωτικές συλλογές πολλών επωνύμων και διακεκριμμένων ανθρώπων. Ο κ. Φιλιππάκης εχει δώσει πολλές διαλέξεις σε Θεολογικές Σχολές και Πανεπιστήμια. Επίσης συνεντεύξεις σε αμέτρητες εφημερίδες σε ολη την Αμερική και σε τηλεοπτικά κανάλια, οπως το 1977 στο NBC TV and Studio στο Burkbank τής Καλιφόρνιας επίσης και στο Odyssey channel και σε πολλά άλλα. Εχει ζωγραφίσει τον Αγιο Φώτιο, στον Αγιο Αυγουστίνο τής Φλωριδας με φρέσκο ή νοπογραφία και πού σήμερα ειναι ενα περίβλεπτο Εθνικό Μνημείο που κατακλύεται απο χιλιάδες επισκέπτες καθε χρόνο για να θαυμάσουν το έργο που αντιπροσωπεύει τούς πρώτους μετανάστες που ήρθαν στο Δυτικό Ημισφαίριο το Γι αυτό το εκκλησάκι και για την καταπληκτική του εργασία το 1982, ο Γιώργος Φιλιππάκης τιμήθηκε με το «Mellen E. Greeley Award», απο το Αμερικάνικο Ινστιτούτο Αρχιτεχτώνων επί χειροτεχνία της Εικονογραφίας. Το 1994 η Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής του απονέμει A Sacred Art continues on page 18. 17 ΠΡΟΦΙΛ A Sacred Art A Look into the Life of Iconographer George Filippakis George Filippakis was born in Heraklion, Crete. His parents were Constantine Filippakis from Stavrakia in Heraklion and Irene, nee Aerakis, from Anogia in Mylopotamos. He is the eldest of four children. The other siblings are his twin Maria, Chryssoula and John. George is married to Mary, nee Boutsikakis, from Anopoli Sfakeion and they have a son Constantine. George s love for painting started in school. He always painted and admired the works of Michael Damaskinos (teacher of El Greco) and the brothers Kastrofilaka. At 11 years old he painted his first icon. While on his way to show his teacher, a tourist from Sweden stopped him and bought his icon. He was ecstatic. At 12 years old he met the great iconographer Stylianos Kartakis from Chania, who, at the time, was painting the Cathedral of Saint Minas in Heraklion, Crete. He studied under Kartakis for five years at the Cretan School of painting and then went on to continue his studies at the National Technical University of Athens. Upon graduation he served in the army. While serving in the Geographic Service unit, the commander of the Army, General Constantine Peregrines, commissioned him to paint the icons of his church in Aegina. At the same time, he also created icons for the church of St. Nektarios. In 1969, he arrived in New York at the invitation of his parents. In 1970, he had his first exhibition at the Greek Orthodox Church of North and South America Clergy Laity conference at the Waldorf Astoria. There, his talents were recognized and he was immediately commissioned to paint the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint John in Boston. Today, his brilliant career continues, having painted more than 60 churches. His works are found throughout America, Alaska, Canada, Australia and even in China. A Sacred Art continues on page 18. Το παράσημο αποδώθηκε στον Γιώργο Φιλιππάκη απο τον τότε Αρχιεπίσκοπο, κ.κ. Ιάκωβο για τις εξαιρετικές του Αγιογραφίες σε ολο το Δυτικό Ημισφαίριο και διότι στην Αμερική συνέβαλε στα μέγιστα στην διάσωση τής γνήσιας παραδοσιακής Βυζαντινής Αγιογραφίας. Το 2002 το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο χρήει τον Γώργο Φιλιππάκη, Αρχοντα του ταγματος του Αγίου Ανδρέα του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως με τον τίτλο ΑΡΧΩΝ ΑΓΙΟΓΡΑΦΟΣ. Σαν γνήσιος Κρητικός προσπαθεί να συμβάλλει για την προόθηση τών ιδανικών τής πατρίδας μας τωρα και 45 χρόνια. Σ αυτα τα χρόνια εχει συμβάλλει ως πρόεδρος του συλλόγου Ερωτόκριτος-Αρετούσα στο Long Island NY για 10 χρόνια και για 6 χρόνια σαν πρόεδρος τής Μικτής Εκπαιδευτικκής Επιτροπής τών Κρητικών συλλόγων της Νέας Υόρκης και Νέας Ιερσέης. Η Παγκρητική μαζί με την ΑΧΕΠΑ έχτησαν στη Νεα Σμύρνη τής Φλώριδας ενα μνημείο εις μνήμην όλων τών Ελλήνων μεταναστών που ήρθαν στην Αμερική απο το Σε αυτό το μνημείο με τον τότε πρόεδρο τής ΠΕΑ κ. Σταυρο Σημαντήρη, αναγνώρισαν επτά διακεκριμμένους Κρήτες. Τα ονόματά τους είναι χαραγμένα σε ενα σημείο του μνημείου αυτού και ειναι: Λούης Τίκας, Νικόλαος Γαλιφιανάκης, Κωνσταντινος Παπαδάκης (Πρόεδρος του Drexel), Χάρης Πετράκης (Συγραφέας), Μιχάλης και Ανδρέας Μανάτος (Πολιτικοί) και Γεώργιος Φιλιππάκης (Καλλιτέχνης). Αξιόλογος, με πολλά χρόνια εμπειρίας και ενας απο τούς μοναδικούς στο είδος τουδεξιοτέχνης, ο κ. Φιλιππάκης, συνεχίζει μέχρι σήμερα να ζωγραφίζει βυζαντινές εικόνες για πολλές εκκλησίες και να υπερέχει ως ένας από τούς καλύτερους Βυζαντινούς Αγιογράφους στις ΗΠΑ. Σε προσωπικό επίπεδο ας μου επιτραπεί να προσθέσω οτι είναι ενας υπέροχος άνθρωπος, ευγενικός, αξιοαύθμαστος, εξαίρετος συμπατριώτης, χαμηλών τόνων, αλλα με αφάνταστη δυναμικότητα μέσα του, με απέραντη αγάπη και καλωσύνη στην καρδιά του. In 1994, the Archdiocese awarded George the Gold Medal of Apostle Paul, the highest distinction given by the Archdiocese to a layperson. The medal was presented to George Filippakis by the then Archbishop James for his outstanding icons throughout the western hemisphere and his contributions to the preservation of authentic traditional Byzantine iconography. In 2002, the His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarchate bestowed upon him the title of Archon of the Order of St. Andrew with the vestment of Agiographos. The PAA helped AHEPA build a monument in New Smyrna, Florida, honoring the memory of all Greek immigrants who came to America from On this monument, former President Stavros Semanderes recognized seven distinct Cretans by having their names engraved on it. They are Louis Tikas, Nicholas Galifianakis, Konstantinos Papadakis (President of Drexel), Harry Mark Petrakis (Author), Michael and Andrew Manatos (Civil) and George Filippakis (Artist). Mr. Filippakis continues still today to paint Byzantine icons for many churches. He is a wonderful, gentle, and kind person with an unimaginable capacity of love for his craft. Today, his works are found in the private collections of many celebrities and distinguished people. Εἰρηναίου συμπλήρωση μιᾶς ὅλης 40 ετίας Ἀρχιερωσύνης H τυγχάνει μείζων ἐκκλησιαστικό γεγονός καί ὁρόσημο ἀξιομνημόνευτο καί ὑπογραμμίσιμο, κυρίως ὅταν τό γεγονός τοῦτο συνοδεύεται, ὅπως στήν περίπτωση τοῦ Σεβασμιωτάτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Κρήτης κ. Ὁ Σεβασμιώτατος Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Κρήτης γιά σαράντα συναπτά χρόνια προσφέρει στήν Ἐκκλησία ὄχι μονάχα τίς γνώσεις του, τή διοικητική μέριμνα, τόν πολύτιμο χρόνο του, τήν ἀναγκαία ἀνάπαυσή του, τό πενιχρό βαλάντιό του μαζί μέ τά πολλά πνευματικά θεοδώρητα τάλαντα τῆς ψυχῆς του, ἀλλά πρωτίστως προσφέρει τόν ἑαυτό του ὁλόκληρο προκειμένου νά δώσει τήν καλή μαρτυρία τοῦ Χριστοῦ καί τῆς Ἐκκλησίας. Ἀναλώνει τόν ἑαυτό του μέ τρόπο θεάρεστο καί θεοφιλῆ. Αὐτό, ὅμως, τό ὁποῖο ἀξίζει περισσότερο στόν τιμώμενο Ἱεράρχη δέν εἶναι τόσο αὐτό πού κάνει ὅσο αὐτό πού ὁ ἴδιος εἶναι: Ἐπίσκοπος πού πορεύεται σέ μία ἄλλη διάσταση καί προοπτική. Μέσα στόν κόσμο ἀλλά μακρυά ἀπό τά κοσμικά καί τά ἀνθρώπινα. Ἀκολουθεῖ τό λόγο τοῦ Ἁγίου Γρηγορίου πού παραγγέλνει: «Τό τοῖς ἔμπροσθεν ἐπεκτείνεσθαι», δηλαδή νά προχωροῦμε ὡς χριστιανοί καί ὡς ἄνθρωποι μόνο μπροστά. Καί ἡ πορεία τοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Εἰρηναίου γιά σαράντα χρόνια εἶναι ἀνωδική γιατί πάντα πάει μπροστά καί μόνο μπροστά. Ἔρχεται στή σκέψη μας τούτη τήν ὥρα ὁ λόγος τοῦ Ἱεροῦ Χρυσοστόμου, Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, ὁ ὁποῖος ταιριάζει ἀπόλυτα στόν Σεπτό πρόσωπο τοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Κρήτης κ.κ. Εἰρηναίου: «Οὐ γάρ διδάσκων μόνον, οὐδέ φθεγγόμενος, ἀλλά καί ὀρώμενος ἁπλῶς, ἱκανός ἐστι ἅπασαν ἀρετῆς διδασκαλίαν εἰς τήν τῶν ὀρώντων ψυχήν εἰσαγαγεῖν» 1. Καί μόνο νά δεῖ κάποιος τόν Ἀρχιεπίσκοπο Εἰρηναίο εἶναι ἀρκετό γιά νά διδαχθεῖ τήν διδασκαλία κάθε ἀρετῆς. Ὅλοι οἱ Κρήτες τῆς Ἀμερικῆς, ἑνώνουμε τή φωνή μας μέ τά ἀδέλφια μας στήν Κρήτη καί μέ σεβασμό καί τιμή εὐχόμαστε πρός στόν Σεπτό Ποιμενάρχη τῆς γενέτειράς μας: Εἰρηναίου τοῦ Σεβασμιωτάτου καί Θεοπροβλήτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Κρήτης πολλά τά ἔτη. His Eminence Irineos, Archbishop of Crete, recently celebrated 40 years of service. The Archbishop of Crete His Eminence Irineos, the Archbishop of Crete, was born on August 9, 1933 in Mixorouma, a village outside of Rethymnon. He studied at the Ecclesiastical School of Crete in 1952; the diocese then sent him to the Halki Seminary to further his theological education. He was ordained Deacon on November 22, 1956 at the church of the Holy Trinity School of Theology. He then was ordained Presbyter on December 22, 1957 and was assigned the entire region of South England. There he founded the community of Bristol and built the Saints Peter and Paul Church, while completing his postgraduate studies in Pastoral Theology at the College of Saint Boniface. In 1960 he moved back to Greece to serve as Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Kissamos and Selino. He served at this post until 1972, when he was appointed principal of the Ecclesiastical School of Crete. He was elected Metropolitan of Kydonia and Apokoronas in February 1975 and stayed in that position until he was enthroned as Archbishop of Crete in Heraklion in August He recently celebrated 40 years of service in the priesthood. 20 ΠΡΟΦΙΛ CRETAN CLERGY OF DISTINCTION PROFILE Ο Πάπας και Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας και Πάσης Αφρικής Θεόδωρος Β Ύστερα από τον τραγικό θάνατο του Πατριάρχου Αλεξανδρείας, του από Κύπρου Πέτρου του 7μου το 2004, με την πτώση του ελικοπτέρου που τον μετέφερε στο Άγιο Όρος, η Ιεραρχία του παλαίφατου Πατριαρχείου ανέδειξε παμψηφεί, ως διάδοχο του, τον από Κρήτης Μητροπολίτη Ζιμπάμπουε, κ.κ. Θεόδωρο και έτσι εξελέγη ο 7ος ΚΡΗΤΙΚΗΣ καταγωγής Πατριάρχης του Αποστολικού θρόνου του Αγίου Μάρκου (Σίλβεστρος, Μελέτιος Πηγάς; Κύριλλος Λούκαρις; Γεράσιμος Παλλαδάς; Γεράσιμος Σπάρταλος και Μελέτιος Μεταξάκης). Ο Μακαριώτατος Πάπας και Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας και πάσης Αφρικής, (κατά κόσμον Νικόλαος Χορευτάκης) κ.κ. Θεόδωρος, γεννήθηκε στην Κρήτη το 1954 και αφού διήκουσε τα πρώτα εγκύκλια μαθήματα στη γενέτειρα, φοίτησε στη Ριζάρειο Εκκλησιαστική Σχολή και εν συνεχεία στη Θεολογική Σχολή του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Μετά την αποφοίτηση του, υπηρέτησε το λόγιο γέροντα του Μητροπολίτη Λάμπης και Σφακίων κυρό Θεόδωρο (Τζεδάκη) επί μίαν δεκαετίαν ως Αρχιδιάκονος και Πρωτοσύγκελος. Προσκλήθηκε από τον Πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας Νικόλαο και υπηρέτησε σε διάφορες καίριες θέσεις. Στην Οδησσό της Ρωσίας ως Πατριαρχικός Έξαρχος, παρακολούθησε και μαθήματα Τέχνης, Ιστορίας και Φιλοσοφίας. Το 1980 εξελέγη Επίσκοπος Κυρήνης και τοποθετήθηκε Εκπρόσωπος του Πατριάρχου στην Ελλάδα και Διευθυντής του Πατριαρχικού Γραφείου στην Αθήνα. Εν συνεχεία, ο αείμνηστος προκάτοχος του τον μετεκάλεσε στην Αλεξάνδρεια και τον κατέστησε Πατριαρχικό Επίτροπο της πόλεως, εξελέγη δε και Μητροπολίτης Καμερούν μετ ολίγον όπου και ανέπτυξε μεγάλη ιεραποστολική και φιλανθρωπική δράση. Το 2002 μετετέθη στη Μητρόπολη Ζιμπάμπουε από όπου, μετά τον τραγικό θάνατο του προκατόχου του, εξελέγη ως ο 115ος Πάπας και Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας και πάσης Αφρικής. Ο Μακαριώτατος Πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας είναι ένας απλός και ταπεινός άνθρωπος, γεμάτος αγάπη και καλωσύνη, ένας μειλίχιος χαρακτήρας που στο αντίκρισμα του νοιώθεις αμέσως πατρική αγάπη και στοργή, με βαθειά πίστη στο Θεό και αναγνώριση της ευθύνης του ως κληρικού της Αγίας μας Ορθοδοξίας και ως κεφαλή του δευτέρου κατά σειρά παλαιού Πατριαρχείου. Οι δραστηριότητες του, ιδιαίτερα στους τομείς της ιεραποστολής και της φιλανθρωπίας και ιδίως η φροντίδα του για τα αναξιοπαθούντα ταλαίπωρα παιδιά της μαύρης Ηπείρου είναι παγκοσμίως γνωστά. Οι συνεχείς περιοδείες του σε όλα τα μήκη και πλάτη της Αφρικής και οι πρωτοβουλίες που αναλαμβάνει για την ίδρυση και συντήρηση σχολείων, εκκλησιών, ιατροφαρμακευτικών κέντρων, κλινικών και όλων των ειδών της φιλανθρωπικής και κοινωνικής προσφοράς και η ευαισθησία του στον ανθρώπινο πόνο, την πείνα και τη μιζέρια τον έχουν καταστήσει ιδιαίτερα αγαπητό και σεβαστό και στο ποίμνιο του αλλά και σε όλο το χριστιανικό κόσμο. Εμείς στην Παγκρητική είχαμε την ειδική ευλογία να τον γνωρίσουμε από κοντά και να πάρουμε την ευχή του όταν τον επισκεφθήκαμε στο ανακαινισμένο Πατριαρχικό Μέγαρο στην Αλεξάνδρεια κατά την διάρκεια του εν πλώ συνεδρίου της Π.Ε.Α. το Μας δέχτηκε με μεγάλη αγάπη, μας απεύθυνε πατρικά λόγια και αφειδώλευτα μας επιδαψίλευσε με την Πατριαρχική ευλογία του. Όλοι οι Κρήτες, απανταχού της οικουμένης, σεμνυνόμεθα και είμαστε υπερήφανοι για τον δικό μας Πατριάρχη, τον Αλεξανδρείας και πάσης Αφρικής ΘΕΟΔΩΡΟ Β και εγκάρδια του απευθύνομε το: ΠΟΛΛΑ τα ΕΤΗ! He was born Nicholas Choreftakis in Crete in He studied at Rizarios Ecclesiastical School and then continued his education at the Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Patriarch Theodoros II is a simple and humble man, full of love and kindness, with a deep faith in God. His overseas an array of missionary and charity work in Africa, with a focus on the children of the region. He constantly visits all areas of Africa and overseas an array of initiatives, including the establishment and maintenance of schools, churches, medical centers, clinics and all kinds of charitable and community service. His sensitivity to human suffering, hunger and misery have made him very popular and respected throughout the Christian world.
