9 MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOHN HAYDEN HABY: Christ is in our midst! Having the opportunity to enter your homes and businesses to bless them has been a rich blessing, I am so thankful for the opportunity. Everyone has been so loving and welcoming. I greatly appreciate your hospitality and philoxenia. Before beginning Great Lent, we celebrate Forgiveness Sunday. Forgiveness Sunday can be just another Sunday, or it can be a great day of spiritual renewal. If we honestly reflect on our lives, someone will come to mind that we harbor ill feelings towards. These feelings may or may not be justified. We may be the innocent victim. Still, our harboring these feelings damages our soul, degrades our spirituality and hurts our relationship with God. Our inability to forgive, destroys us like a spiritual cancer within our soul. Therefore, we must pray for God to prick our conscience to make us aware of those who we have not forgiven. Then, we must forgive them, repent and ask for God s forgiveness. The most difficult passage in the Lord Prayer is forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. This passage frightens me. Forgiveness Sunday allows us to begin lent with a fresh slate as we put aside the burdens of unforgiveness. We grow spiritually through an active liturgical and ascetical lifestyle. Think of it as a gym membership. We don t get fit by having a gym membership but by exercising. An active liturgical and ascetical life exercises our spiritual life. During Great Lent we increase the emphasis on our spiritual growth with increased prayer, fasting, almsgiving and more liturgical services. With active participation we grow spiritually because we focus more on God and less upon ourselves, and the cares of the world. During Great Lent we have a more active liturgical life. The Divine Liturgies of Saint Basil have longer prayers that the priest prays. Weekday services include Pre-sanctified liturgies, Great Compline and the Akathist to the Theotokos. Pre-sanctified liturgy begins with the vespers service and then transitions into liturgy. The service uses a previously consecrated lamb or αμνός (the bread representing Christ) from the Sunday Divine Liturgy. These services allow us to increase our pray life and our participation in Holy Communion. A major component of Great Lent consists of fasting. For most of us fasting becomes more of a burden and a great tool of Satan for discouragement than a spiritual exercise. This is why we work our way into fasting. Remembering the objective is spiritual growth; we must recognize the goal of fasting is not what we give up but what we gain. It is all about our focus. When we eat a lighter diet, our bodies become more alert and we can focus more on our prayer life. When we eat less we become hungrier. We can use this hunger to redirect our focus from our own desires to the words of our Lord who said, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matt. 5:6). With each hunger pain we can pray God will redirect our passion to righteousness. While we refrain from certain foods, we gain spirituality. Let me encourage everyone to make the most out of Great Lent. The more we can pray, fast and give alms, the more we will be blessed. The more we can participate in the liturgical services, the more we will be blessed. I pray everyone continues to have a blessed and holy Great Lent. Blessings, Fr. John Hayden Haby 6

10 Άγιοι Σαράντα Μάρτυρες που μαρτύρησαν στη Σεβάστεια Και οι σαράντα αυτοί Άγιοι ήταν στρατιώτες στο πιο επίλεκτο τάγμα του στρατού του Λικινίου. Όταν αυτός εξαπέλυσε διωγμό κατά των χριστιανών, οι Άγιοι σαράντα συλλαμβάνονται αμέσως από τον έπαρχο Αγρικόλα (στη Σεβάστεια). Στην αρχή τους επαινεί και τους υπόσχεται αμοιβές και αξιώματα, για να αρνηθούν την πίστη τους. Τότε ένας από τους σαράντα, ο Κάνδιδος, απαντά: «Ευχαριστούμε για τους επαίνους της ανδρείας μας. Άλλ' ο Χριστός, στον όποιο πιστεύουμε, μας διδάσκει ότι στον καθένα άρχοντα πρέπει να του προσφέρουμε ό,τι του ανήκει. Και γι' αυτό στο βασιλέα προσφέρουμε τη στρατιωτική υπακοή. Αν, όμως, ενώ ακολουθούμε το Ευαγγέλιο, δεν ζημιώνουμε το κράτος, αλλά μάλλον το ωφελούμε με την υπηρεσία μας, γιατί μας ανακρίνεις για την πίστη πού μορφώνει τέτοιους χαρακτήρες και οδηγεί σε τέτοια έργα;» Ο Αγρικόλας κατάλαβε ότι δεν μπορούσε να τους επιβληθεί με ήρεμο τρόπο και διέταξε να τους βασανίσουν. Οπότε, μια παγωμένη χειμωνιάτικη νύχτα, τους ρίχνουν στα κρύα νερά μιας λίμνης. Το μαρτύριο ήταν φρικτό. Τα σώματα άρχισαν να μελανιάζουν. Αλλα αυτοί ενθάρρυναν ο ένας τον άλλο, λέγοντας: «Δριμύς ο χειμών, αλλά γλυκύς ο παράδεισος. Λίγο ας υπομείνουμε και σε μια νύχτα θα κερδίσουμε ολόκληρη την αιωνιότητα». Ενώ προχωρούσε το μαρτύριο, ένας μόνο λιποψύχησε και βγήκε από τη λίμνη. Τον αντικατέστησε όμως ο φρουρός (Αγλάϊος), που είδε τα στεφάνια πάνω από τα κεφάλια τους. Ομολόγησε το Χριστό, μπήκε στη λίμνη και μαζί με τους 39 παίρνει και αυτός το στεφάνι του μαρτυρίου, αφού μισοπεθαμένους τους έβγαλαν το πρωί από τη λίμνη και τους συνέτριψαν τα σκέλη. Τα μαρτυρικά λείψανα ευρέθησαν από τους Χριστιανούς σε κάποιο γκρεμό, όπου είχαν συναχθεί κατά θεία οικονομία και ενταφιάσθηκαν με ευλάβεια. Στον Ευεργετινό αναφέρεται ότι ενώ οι Άγιοι Τεσσαράκοντα Μάρτυρες βρίσκονταν στο στάδιο της αθλήσεως έχοντας παραμείνει όλη τη νύχτα μέσα στην παγωμένη λίμνη και καθώς τους έσερναν στον αιγιαλό για να τους συντρίψουν τα σκέλη, η μητέρα ενός Μάρτυρος παρέμενε εκεί πάσχουσα με αυτούς, βλέποντας το παιδί της που ήταν νεότερο στην ηλικία από όλους, μήπως και λόγω του νεαρού της ηλικίας και της αγάπης προς την ζωή, δειλιάσει και βρεθεί ανάξιο της τιμής και της τάξεως των στρατιωτών του Χριστού. Στεκόταν λοιπόν, εκεί και άπλωνε τα χέρια της προς το παιδί της λέγοντας: «Παιδί μου γλυκύτατο, υπόμεινε για λίγο και θα καταστείς τέκνο του Ουράνιου Πατέρα. Μην φοβηθείς τις βασάνους. Ιδού, παρίσταται ως βοηθός σου ο Χριστός. Τίποτε δεν θα είναι από εδώ και πέρα πικρό, τίποτα το επίπονο δεν θα απαντήσεις. Όλα εκείνα παρήλθαν, διότι όλα αυτά τα νίκησες με τη γενναιότητά σου. Χαρά μετά από αυτά, άνεση, ευφροσύνη. Όλα αυτά θα τα γεύεσαι, διότι θα είσαι κοντά στον Χριστό και θα πρεσβεύεις εις Αυτόν και για μένα που σε γέννησα». Τα λείψανα των Αγίων βρήκε με θεία οπτασία, το έτος 438 μ.χ., η αυτοκράτειρα Πουλχερία (βλέπε 17 Φεβρουαρίου) κρυμμένα στο ναό του Αγίου Θύρσου, πίσω από τον άμβωνα, στον τάφο της διακόνισσας Ευσέβειας σε δύο αργυρές θήκες, οι οποίες κατά την 7

11 διαθήκη της Ευσέβειας, είχαν εναποτεθεί στον τάφο της στο μέρος της κεφαλής της. Στην συνέχεια η Πουλχερία οικοδόμησε ναό έξω από τα τείχη των Τρωαδησίων. Σπουδαία από ιστορικής απόψεως θεωρείται από νεότερους ερευνητές η Διαθήκη των Αγίων Τεσσαράκοντα Μαρτύρων, η οποία αποσκοπεί στο να παρεμποδίσει τον διασκορπισμό των ιερών λειψάνων τους μεταξύ των Χριστιανών, πράγμα συνηθισμένο στην Ανατολή κατά τους χρόνους εκείνους. Οι γονείς του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου (βλέπε εδώ), που κατείχαν «κόνιν» και τεμάχια των ιερών λειψάνων των Αγίων Τεσσαράκοντα Μαρτύρων, ανήγειραν τον πρώτο ναό στην Ανατολή εις τιμήν των Αγίων, όπου και ετάφησαν, σε κτήμα τους στον Πόντο. Ναός αφιερωμένος στους Αγίους Τεσσαράκοντα Μάρτυρες υπήρχε στην περιοχή Μέση της Κωνσταντινούπολης, που είχε ανεγερθεί από τον αυτοκράτορα Τιβέριο Α ( μ.χ.) και συμπληρωθεί από τον αυτοκράτορα Μαυρίκιο ( μ.χ.). Το ναό κατεκόσμησε ο Ανδρόνικος ο Κομνηνός ( μ.χ.). Στο ναό αυτό λειτουργούνταν κατά την ημέρα της μνήμης των Αγίων Μαρτύρων οι αυτοκράτορες. Άλλοι ναοί υπήρχαν: α) στο παλάτι, και ο οποίος πανηγύριζε στις 27 Αυγούστου, β) στη νήσο Πλάτη, ἢ Πλατεία, γ) στη μονή της Χώρας, δ) στην Έμμεσα της Συρίας. Η Σύναξη αυτών ετελείτο στο αγιότατο Μαρτύριό τους πλησίον του Χαλκού Τετραπύλου. Τέλος αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι οι Άγιοι Τεσσαράκοντα Μάρτυρες είναι προστάτες της Ι. Μ. Ξηροποτάμου στο Άγιον Όρος, το Καθολικό της οποίας τιμάται στη Μνήμη τους. Κατά τους Παρισινούς Κώδικες 1575 και 1476 τα ονόματα τους ήταν: Κυρίων, Κάνδιδος (ή Κλαύδιος), Δόμνας, Ευτύχιος (ή Ευτυχής), Σεβηριανός, Κύριλλος, Θεόδουλος, Βιβιανός, Αγγίας, Ησύχιος, Ευνοϊκός, Μελίτων, Ηλιάδης (ή Ηλίας), Αλέξανδρος, Σακεδών (ή Σακερδών), Ουάλης, Πρίσκος, Χουδίων, Ηράκλειος, Εκδίκιος, (ή Ευδίκιος), Ιωάννης, Φιλοκτήμων, Φλάβιος, Ξάνθιος, (ή Ξανθιάς), Ουαλέριος, Νικόλαος, Αθανάσιος, Θεόφιλος, Λυσίμαχος, Γάϊος, Κλαύδιος, Σμάραγδος, Σισίνιος, Λεόντιος, Αέτιος, Ακάκιος, Δομετιανός (ή Δομέτιος), δυο Γοργόνιοι, Ιουλιανός, (ή Ελιανός ή Ηλιανός), και Αγλάϊος ο καπικλάριος. (Ορισμένοι Κώδικες αναφέρουν και επιπλέον των σαράντα ονόματα, όπως αυτά των Αγίων Αειθάλα, άλλου Γοργονίου κ.λ.π.). 8

15 Όσιος Αλέξιος ο άνθρωπος του Θεού Μαρτίου 17 Ο Όσιος Αλέξιος γεννήθηκε στη Ρώμη κατά τους χρόνους των αυτοκρατόρων Αρκαδίου ( μ.χ.) και Ονωρίου ( μ.χ.) από ευσεβείς και εύπορους γονείς. Ο πατέρας του Ευφημιανός ήταν συγκλητικός, φιλόπτωχος και συμπαθής, ώστε καθημερινά παρέθετε τρεις τράπεζες στο σπίτι του για τα ορφανά, τις χήρες και τους ξένους που ήταν πτωχοί. Η γυναίκα του ονομαζόταν Αγλαΐς και ήταν άτεκνη. Στη δέησή της να αποκτήσει παιδί, ο Θεός την εισάκουσε. Και τους χάρισε υιό. Αφού το παιδί μεγάλωσε κι έλαβε την κατάλληλη παιδεία, έγινε σοφότατος και θεοδίδακτος. Όταν έφθασε στη νόμιμη ηλικία, τον στεφάνωσαν με θυγατέρα από βασιλική και ευγενική γενιά. Το βράδυ όμως στο συζυγικό δωμάτιο ο Όσιος, αφού πήρε το χρυσό δακτυλίδι και τη ζώνη, τα επέστρεψε στην σύζυγό του και εγκατέλειψε τον κοιτώνα. Παίρνοντας αρκετά χρήματα από τα πλούτη του έφυγε με πλοίο περιφρονώντας την ματαιότητα της επίγειας δόξας. Καταφθάνει στην Λαοδικεία της Συρίας και από εκεί στην Έδεσσα της Μεσοποταμίας. Εκεί ο Όσιος Αλέξειος μοίρασε τα χρήματα στους πτωχούς, ακόμη και τα ιμάτιά του, και, αφού ενδύθηκε με κουρελιασμένα και χιλιομπαλωμένα ρούχα, κάθισε στο νάρθηκα του ναού της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου, ως ένας από τους πτωχούς. Προτίμησε έτσι να ζει με νηστεία όλη την εβδομάδα και να μεταλαμβάνει των Αχράντων Μυστηρίων κάθε Κυριακή, ενώ μόνο τότε έτρωγε λίγο άρτο και έπινε λίγο νερό. Οι γονείς του όμως τον αναζητούσαν παντού και έστειλαν υπηρέτες τους να τον βρουν. Στην αναζήτησή τους έφθασαν μέχρι το ναό της Έδεσσας, χωρίς ωστόσο να τον αναγνωρίσουν. Οι δούλοι επέστρεψαν άπρακτοι στη Ρώμη, ενώ η μητέρα του Αλέξιου με οδύνη, φορώντας πτωχά ενδύματα, καθόταν σε μια θύρα του σπιτιού πενθώντας νύχτα και ημέρα. Το ίδιο και η νύφη, που φόρεσε τρίχινο σάκκο και παρέμεινε κοντά στην πεθερά της. Ο Όσιος Αλέξιος για δεκαεπτά χρόνια παρέμεινε στο νάρθηκα του ναού της Θεοτόκου ευαρεστώντας το Θεό. Και μια νύχτα η Θεοτόκος παρουσιάστηκε στον προσμονάριο του ναού σε όνειρο και του ζήτησε να του φέρει μέσα στο ναό τον άνθρωπο του Θεού. Τότε ο προσμονάριος, αφού βγήκε από το ναό και δεν βρήκε κανένα παρά μόνο τον Αλέξιο, εδεήθηκε στη Θεοτόκο να του υποδείξει τον άνθρωπο, όπως κι έγινε. Τότε πήρε από το χέρι τον Όσιο Αλέξιο και τον εισήγαγε στο ναό με κάθε τιμή και μεγαλοπρέπεια. Μόλις ο Όσιος κατάλαβε ότι έγινε γνωστός εκεί, έφυγε κρυφά και σκέφτηκε να πάει στην Ταρσό, στο ναό του Αγίου Παύλου του Αποστόλου, όπου εκεί θα ήταν άγνωστος. Αλλα όμως σχεδίασε η Θεία Πρόνοια. Γιατί βίαιος άνεμος άρπαξε το πλοίο και το μετέφερε στη Ρώμη. Βγαίνοντας από το πλοίο κατάλαβε ότι ο Κύριος ήθελε να επανέλθει ο Αλέξιος στο σπίτι του. Όταν συνάντησε τον πατέρα του, που δεν αναγνώρισε τον υιό του, του ζήτησε να τον ελεήσει και να τον αφήσει να τρώει από τα περισσεύματα της τράπεζάς του. Με μεγάλη προθυμία ο πατέρας του δέχθηκε να τον ελεήσει και μάλιστα του έδωσε κάποιο υπηρέτη για να τον βοηθάει. Κάποιοι δούλοι από την οικία τον πείραζαν και τον κορόιδευαν, όμως αυτό δεν τον ένοιαζε. Έδινε την τροφή του σε άλλους, παραμένοντας όλη την εβδομάδα χωρίς τροφή και νερό, και μόνο μετά την Κοινωνία των Θείων και Αχράντων Μυστηρίων δεχόταν λίγο άρτο και νερό. Έμεινε λοιπόν για δεκαεπτά χρόνια στον πατρικό οίκο χωρίς να τον γνωρίζει κανένας. Όταν έφθασε ο καιρός της κοιμήσεώς του, τότε κάθισε κι έγραψε σε χαρτί όλο το βίο του, τους τόπους που πέρασε, αλλά και κάποια από τα μυστικά που γνώριζαν μόνο οι γονείς του. Κάποια Κυριακή, όταν ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ιννοκέντιος τελούσε τη Θεία Λειτουργία, ακούσθηκε φωνή από το Άγιο Θυσιαστήριο, που καλούσε τους συμμετέχοντες να αναζητήσουν τον άνθρωπο του Θεού. Την Παρασκευή ο Όσιος Αλέξιος παρέδωσε το πνεύμα του στα χέρια του Θεού, ενώ το απόγευμα της ίδιας μέρας οι πιστοί βασιλείς και ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος προσήλθαν στο ναό για να δεηθούν στο Θεό να τους αποκαλύψει τον άγιο άνθρωπο του Θεού. Τότε μια φωνή τους 12

16 κατηύθυνε στο σπίτι του Ευφημιανού. Λίγο αργότερα οι βασιλείς μαζί με τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο έφθασαν στο σπίτι του Ευφημιανού, προξενώντας μάλιστα την απορία της γυναίκας και της νύφης του για την παρουσία τους εκεί, και ρώτησαν τον Ευφημιανό. Όμως εκείνος, αφού ρώτησε πρώτα τους υπηρέτες, είπε ότι δεν γνώριζε τίποτα. Στην συνέχεια ο υπηρέτης που φρόντιζε τον Όσιο Αλέξιο, παρακινούμενος από θεία δύναμη ανέφερε τον τρόπο ζωής του πτωχού, τον οποίο εξυπηρετούσε. Τότε ο Ευφημιανός χωρίς να γνωρίζει ότι ο Όσιος είναι ήδη νεκρός, αποκάλυψε το πρόσωπο αυτού, που έλαμπε σαν πρόσωπο αγγέλου. Στο χέρι του Οσίου μάλιστα είδε χαρτί, που δεν μπόρεσε να αποσπάσει. Στη συνέχεια ανέφερε στους επισκέπτες του ότι βρέθηκε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. Οι βασιλείς και ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος τότε εδεήθησαν στον Όσιο να τους επιτρέψει να δουν το χαρτί που είχε στο χέρι του. Μόλις ο αρχειοφύλακας πήρε στο χέρι του το χαρτί, ο Ευφημιανός αντιλήφθηκε ότι επρόκειτο για τον υιό του, τον οποίο αναζητούσε χρόνια τώρα, και μεγάλο πένθος έπεσε στην οικογένειά του. Θρήνος μεγάλος και από την γυναίκα και τη νύφη του. Ο βασιλεύς Ονώριος και ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος μετέφεραν το τίμιο λείψανο του Οσίου στο μέσο της πόλεως και κάλεσαν όλο το λαό για να έλθει να προσκυνήσει και να λάβει ευλογία. Όσοι προσέρχονταν και ασπάζονταν το τίμιο λείψανο, άλαλοι, κουφοί, τυφλοί, λεπροί, δαιμονισμένοι, όλοι θεραπεύονταν. Βλέποντας αυτά τα θαύματα οι πιστοί δόξαζαν τον Θεό. Ήταν τόσος ο κόσμος που προσερχόταν για να δει το τίμιο λείψανο, που δεν μπορούσαν να το μεταφέρουν στο ναό του Αγίου Βονιφατίου για να το ενταφιάσουν. Έριξαν ακόμη και χρυσό και άργυρο στον κόσμο για να του αποσπάσουν την προσοχή, αλλά μάταια. Όταν πια μεταφέρθηκε το τίμιο λείψανο στο ναό, για επτά μέρες γιόρταζαν πανηγυρικά και στην γιορτή συμμετείχαν οι γονείς και η νύφη. Στη συνέχεια τοποθετήθηκε το τίμιο λείψανο σε θήκη φτιαγμένη από χρυσό, άργυρο και πολύτιμους λίθους. Αμέσως άρχισε να ευωδιάζει και να αναβλύζει μύρο, το οποίο έγινε ίαμα και θεραπεία για όλους. Η Κάρα του Οσίου Αλεξίου δωρήθηκε στη Μονή Αγίας Λαύρας Καλαβρύτων το 1398 μ.χ. από τον Αυτοκράτορα Μανουήλ τον Παλαιολόγο. Κατά την πυρπόληση της Μονής από τους Οθωμανούς το 1585 μ.χ. διασώθηκε από δύο μοναχούς. 13

17 Venerable Alexios the Man of God March 17 Saint Alexios was born at Rome into the family of the pious and povertyloving Euphemianus and Aglais. The couple was childless for a long time and constantly prayed the Lord to grant them a child. And the Lord consoled the couple with the birth of their son Alexios. At six years of age the child began to read and successfully studied the mundane sciences, but it was with particular diligence that he read Holy Scripture. When he was a young man, he began to imitate his parents: he fasted strictly, distributed alms and beneath his fine clothing he secretly wore a hair shirt. Early on there burned within him the desire to leave the world and serve God. His parents, however, had arranged for Alexios to marry a beautiful and virtuous bride. On his wedding night, Alexios gave her his ring and his belt (which were very valuable) and said, Keep these things, Beloved, and may the Lord be with us until His grace provides us with something better. Secretly leaving his home, he boarded a ship sailing for Mesopotamia. Arriving in the city of Edessa, where the Icon of the Lord Not-made-by- Hands (August 16) was preserved, Alexios sold everything that he had, distributed the money to the poor and began to live near the church of the Most Holy Theotokos under a portico. The saint used a portion of the alms he received to buy bread and water, and he distributed the rest to the aged and infirm. Each Sunday he received the Holy Mysteries. The parents sought the missing Alexios everywhere, but without success. The servants sent by Euphemianus also arrived in Edessa, but they did not recognize the beggar sitting at the portico as their master. His body was withered by fasting, his comeliness vanished, his stature diminished. The saint recognized them and gave thanks to the Lord that he received alms from his own servants. The inconsolable mother of Saint Alexios confined herself in her room, incessantly praying for her son. His wife also grieved with her in-laws. Saint Alexios dwelt in Edessa for seventeen years. Once, the Mother of God spoke to the sacristan of the church where the saint lived: Lead into My church that Man of God, worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven. His prayer rises up to God like fragrant incense, and the Holy Spirit rests upon him. The sacristan began to search for such a man, but was not able to find him for a long time. Then he prayed to the Most Holy Theotokos, beseeching Her to clear up his confusion. Again a voice from the icon proclaimed that the Man of God was the beggar who sat in the church portico. The sacristan found Saint Alexios and brought him into the church. Many recognized him and began to praise him. The saint secretly boarded a ship bound for Cilicia, intending to visit the church of Saint Paul in Tarsus. But God ordained 14

18 otherwise. A storm took the ship far to the West and it reached the coast of Italy. The saint journeyed to Rome and decided to live in his own house. Unrecognized, he humbly asked his father s permission to settle in some corner of his courtyard. Euphemianus settled Alexios in a specially constructed cell and gave orders to feed him from his table. Living at his parental home, the saint continued to fast and he spent day and night at prayer. He humbly endured insults and jeering from the servants of his father. The cell of Alexios was opposite his wife s windows, and the ascetic suffered grievously when he heard her weeping. Only his immeasurable love for God helped the saint endure this torment. Saint Alexios dwelt at the house of his parents for seventeen years and the Lord revealed to him the day of his death. Then the saint, taking paper and ink, wrote certain things that only his wife and parents would know. He also asked them to forgive him for the pain he had caused them. On the day of Saint Alexios death in 411, Archbishop Innocent ( ) was serving Liturgy in the presence of the emperor Honorius ( ). During the services a Voice was heard from the altar: Come unto Me, all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Mt.11:28). All those present fell to the ground in terror. The Voice continued: On Friday morning the Man of God comes forth from the body; have him pray for the city, that you may remain untroubled. They began to search throughout Rome, but they did not find the saint. Thursday evening the Pope was serving Vigil in the Church of Saint Peter. He asked the Lord to show them where to find the Man of God. After Liturgy the Voice was heard again in the temple: Seek the Man of God in the house of Euphemianus. All hastened there, but the saint was already dead. His face shone like the face of an angel, and his hand clasped the paper, and they were unable to take it. They placed the saint s body on a cot, covered with costly coverings. The Pope and the Emperor bent their knees and turned to the saint, as to one yet alive, asking him to open his hand. And the saint heard their prayer. When the letter was read, the righteous one s wife and parents tearfully venerated his holy relics. The body of the saint was placed in the center of the city. The emperor and the Pope carried the body of the saint into the church, where it remained for a whole week, and then was placed in a marble crypt. A fragrant myrrh began to flow from the holy relics, bestowing healing upon the sick. The venerable relics of Saint Alexios, the Man of God, were buried in the church of Saint Boniface.
