MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOHN HAYDEN HABY: Christ is in our midst. It s that time again and the festival is just around the corner. When Gen. George C. Marshall took command of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA, he found the post in a generally run-down condition. Rather than issue orders for specific improvements, he simply got out his own paintbrushes, lawn equipment, etc., and went to work on his personal quarters. The other officers and men, first on his block, then throughout the post, did the same thing, and Fort Benning was brightened up. True leadership is by example and our true Christian leadership or witness is by example. I believe we must recognize the importance of our Christian witness. I write this quote as we prepare for the festival next month. We naturally fall into the trap of thinking the festival is just a business and a fundraiser for the church. The festival is so much more. The festival is an opportunity to present Orthodoxy to those without a church and to the under churched. Many churches are failing their parishioners and these failed parishioners seek something deeper and richer in their spiritual journey. Orthodoxy offers them the opportunity to strengthen their faith and participate in the fullness of the faith. These seekers will be naturally attracted to Orthodoxy. But when we do not act in a Christ like manner they will be repulsed. Basically, a festival is like opening a store and a restaurant with mostly volunteer labor. It is very difficult and very stressful. Most of the volunteers do tasks outside their normal skill set and their comfort zone. We must recognize the need to rise above our emotions and passions. We must recognize that we represent Christ in our actions. We must be prayerful in preparing for the festival and during the festival. The general public will test our patients and our ability to love our neighbor. Our fellow parishioners will test our patients and our ability to love our neighbor. We have a higher calling to be Christ like in these difficult circumstances and trials. I also wish to share my philosophy on leadership and responsibility. One of my old bosses was Admiral Hyman George Rickover, the father of the nuclear 5
MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOHN HAYDEN: navy. He made an elaborate quote on responsibility but I will summarize it. Unless someone is responsible for something, then no one is responsible. We can not have an effective festival with out parishioners assuming leadership roles and taking responsibility for certain parts of the festival. We don t pay these parishioners we just ask them to set up and take charge of that area. We ask them to take the risk of failure. The best thing we can do for those accepting this responsibility is to give them the freedom and control to exercise these responsibilities. We all have different management styles, methods, approaches, demeanors and personalities. It does not matter how it was done in the past or how we would do it. The person responsible is the person responsible. As servants of Christ we need to support these leaders even when we disagree with the way they execute their responsibilities. The best thing we can do for our leaders is pray for them. Let us keep supporting the festival by preparing with our labors and prayers. Fr.
St. Demetrios the Holy Great Martyr and Myrrh-streamer October 26 This glorious and wonderworking saint was born in Thessalonica of noble and devout parents. Implored of God by childless parents, Demetrios was their only son, and so was raised and educated with great care. Demetrios s father was a commander in Thessalonica. When his father died, Emperor Maximian appointed Demetrios as commander in his place. As he appointed him, Maximian, an opponent of Christ, particularly recommended that he persecute and exterminate the Christians in Thessalonica. Demetrios not only disobeyed the emperor but openly confessed and preached the Lord Jesus Christ in the city of Thessalonica. When the emperor heard of this he became furious with Demetrios. Then, when he was returning from battle against the Sarmatians, Maximian stopped at Thessalonica to investigate the matter. The emperor summoned Demetrios and questioned him about his faith. Demetrios openly acknowledged his Christian Faith to the emperor and also denounced the emperor s idolatry. Maximian cast Demetrios into prison. Knowing what was awaiting him, Demetrios gave all his goods to his faithful servant Lupus to distribute to the poor, and joyfully awaited his imminent suffering for Christ the Lord. An angel of God appeared to him in prison, saying: Peace be to you, O sufferer of Christ; be brave and be strong! After several days, the emperor sent soldiers to the prison to kill Demetrios. The soldiers found the saint of God at prayer and ran him through with lances. Christians secretly took his body and honorably buried it. Healing myrrh flowed from the body of the martyr of Christ, curing many of the sick. Soon, a small church was built over his relics. An Illyrian nobleman, Leontius, was afflicted with an incurable illness. He hastened, with prayer, to the relics of St. Demetrios and was completely healed. In thanksgiving, Leontius erected a much larger church on the site of the old church. The saint appeared to him on two occasions. When Emperor Justinian wanted to translate the relics of the saint from Thessalonica to Constantinople, flaming sparks sprang from the tomb and a voice was heard: Stop, and do not touch! And thus, the relics of St. Demetrios have remained for all time in Thessalonica. As the protector of Thessalonica, St. Demetrios has appeared many times, and on many occasions has saved Thessalonica from great calamity. His miracles are without number. The Russians considered St. Demetrios to be the protector of Siberia, which was conquered and annexed to Russia on October 26, 1581. http://www.gometropolis.org/orthodox-faith/feast-days/holy-great-martyr-demetrios-the-myrrh-streamer/ 11
Saint Thomas the Apostle October 6 Thomas was also called The Twin, one of the original Twelve Apostles. Through his doubt in the Resurrection of Christ the Lord, a new proof was given of that wonderful and saving event. The Lord said to Thomas: Reach hither thy finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas replied: My Lord and my God (John 20:27-28). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, when the apostles cast lots to see where they would each go to preach, the lot fell to Thomas to go to India. Thomas converted many to the Christian Faith, and established the Church there, appointing priests and bishops. Before his martyric death, he and the other apostles were miraculously brought to Jerusalem for the burial of the Most-holy Theotokos. Arriving too late, he wept bitterly, and the tomb of the Holy Most-pure One was opened at his request. The Theotokos body was not found in the tomb: the Lord had taken His Mother to His heavenly habitation. Thus, in his tardiness Thomas revealed to us the wondrous glorification of the Mother of God, just as he had once confirmed faith in the Resurrection of the Lord by his unbelief. http://ww1.antiochian.org/node/23987 13
