Cyprus Rotary / District Rotary 2450 DG Announcement on South Sudan At its recent meeting, the RI Board considered the question of which district would be best suited to include South Sudan since this became a separate country. The Board s decision is the following indicating that South Sudan is not a part of D2450 effective immediately: D-2. Districting of South Sudan DECISION: The Board 1. assigns the new country of South Sudan to District 9200 and subsequently to District 9212 as of 1 July 2013; 2. requests the general secretary to notify the clubs in District 9200 and in South Sudan of this decision. From Rotary International Rotary news in brief from around the globe ShelterBox teams distributed more than 550 tents to Madagascar for families left homeless by a powerful cyclone.photo by Angela Spencer-Smith/ShelterBox Last spring, the Rotary clubs of Lagos Central and Dunwoody, Georgia, USA, began implementing water and sanitation projects in 12 schools in the states of Lagos and Ogun. R otary clubs around the globe have many things in common, including a commitment to service. All year long, clubs are taking action to make a difference in their communities. Here s a roundup of recent club activities worldwide: Australia More than 200 children with disabilities played modified cricket during the second annual Dream Cricket Day in October. The Rotary clubs of Bowral-Mittagong, Berrima District, and Moss Vale worked with the Movement Disorder Foundation and the Bradman Foundation to organize the event, which took place in Bowral, home to Sir Donald Bradman, one of Australia s best cricketers. Canada Hospital visits can be frightening for children. To help provide comfort, the Rotary Club of Ajax, Ont., has donated stuffed animals to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital for the past eight years. In November, the club presented 463 plush toys, bringing its total to 10,000. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and local Walmart stores and Canadian Tire locations have contributed funds to the program. England The Rotary Club of New Milton hosts families in need for weeklong vacations in the bungalow it maintains by the English Channel. The families enjoy access to pools, tennis courts, and the nearby New Forest national park. Other Rotary clubs sponsor the guests, and members of the New Milton club are on hand to greet them and provide help during their stay. Over the past 45 years, 945 families 21 each summer have vacationed in the bungalow. India The U.S. government estimates that 893 girls are born in India for every 1,000 boys, as compared with 955 girls in the United States. Although sex-selective abortion is illegal in India, many experts believe the disparity is a result of that practice. In response, the Rotary Club of Chandigarh renewed its campaign against female feticide in July by joining with Panjab University s School of Communication Studies to present a radio series entitled Hamari Beti. The show focuses on issues such as the societal reasons for sex-selective abortion and the role of doctors in preventing it. Nigeria Last spring, the Rotary clubs of Lagos Central and Dunwoody, Georgia, USA, began implementing water and sanitation projects in 12 schools in the states of Lagos and Ogun. While assessing community needs, the Rotarians discovered that sanitation systems would be as vital as clean water, as waterborne diseases were rampant. The US$62,000 effort supported in part by a Rotary Foundation Global Grant has provided renovated toilet facilities as well as training on efficient water use and hygiene. Public Relations Plan Public Relations Plan Main target: To get more citizens aware, especially whose who leave in Nicosia area, about our club, and our activities. What is Rotary, who are the Rotarians, what does Rotary do. Specifically, we should try to overcome and to clarify a misunderstanding and a misperception that runs across a lot of people in Cyprus that Rotary is a kind of a "sect" (heresy). This is a quite negative approach from a lot of people in Cyprus that affects the expansion, the role and the function of our club and our organization in general, especially in Cyprus a country with citizens that have very strong bonds to their religion. Also, we should sick and aim to expose and to promote most of our major activities, through the media (local and national). Use of media: In our days the use of media, especially electronic media, is a very powerful, important and effective tool (and vehicle) in order to promote and to inform the public about our organizations and our club's activities. We are listing below some of our initial suggestions regarding the promotion of our club's activities through the media: Prepare and send press (news) releases to all media (electronic and printed) regarding our major activities. Arrange the participation of our President and/or other Board members to various local radio programs, in order to speak and to explain the role, the function and the importance of our organization and especially our Nicosia-Lefkothea club. Inform the media (especially some "key" media persons and journalists) but also the public, in general, about our official web-side, so they can visit it and get the appropriate information. They could also have a link to our weekly electronic bulletin in order to follow our meeting activities and other general activities and projects of our club. Events that could be attractive to the media: We should organize specific events that are attractive both to the media and to the general public. Such events could be "tea - afternoons", dinners, special "theme" nights, or special nights (parties) at a local night club (such event could be also attractive to younger people). We can also organize special events like a Christmas Gala dinner, a Carnival dance dinner, a Saint Valentine's Day special dinner, an Easter lunch day, out in the fields, with the traditional lamb "suvla", etc. We can invite one or two notable, expert speakers (according to specific subjects and fields) well known Doctor, or a well known media personality, to give a speech thus, organizing an event open to the general public. For all these events and activities we can always collaborate with other local clubs. Local government officials: We could arrange meetings of our Board Members with high positioned local government officials in order to inform them about our activities, our efforts to support and to help the society through our charity activities and events and to make them aware about our existence and our function, especially in the district of Nicosia. Such meetings will be largely covered by the media. 2.
