Principles for Ministry Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7, especially verses 2 and 3 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.... Although this reading does not explicitly state that the chosen seven were ordained as deacons, tradition reads it as such. Certainly the Greek verb diakonein ( to serve ) in verse 2 is the basis for the name of the diaconate, or order of deacons. In early times, in keeping with apostolic practice, seven deacons always served under each bishop. That particular rule was discontinued, but many apostolic principles found in Acts still apply to ministry today. First is the principle that ethnicity should never block a candidate from ministry in the Church. Unlike ancient Israel, the Church is united through the blood of Christ out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation (Revelation 5:9). The Jerusalem congregation, in response to the complaint that the widows of the Greek-speaking members were being neglected by the Aramaic-speaking majority (Acts 6:1), chooses to appoint seven men with Greek names (verse 5). The leadership appears sensitive to the need to quell any hint of ethnic divisiveness in the life of the Church. Today, there are many ethnic groups in the Church, yet ethnicity should never exclude anyone from ministry, including ordination. Rather, the exclusion of a candidate because of ethnicity is a serious sin against the Lord s very Body. Second, care is taken for the defenseless and dependent, such as assuring that widows are not neglected (verse 1). Our priests today bring the holy chalice to communicants in wheelchairs, and to those in hospitals and nursing homes who can no longer visit the temple. This principle of care for the helpless extends to social services and every ministry the Church provides. A third principle may be seen in the effort to protect pastoral ministry by assuring that the apostles are not be diverted from their essential work of teaching and worship by other community needs (verses 2 through 4). Let us protect our clergy so they may conduct their ministries and not have their time and energy drained off into mundane tasks. Fourth, the Jerusalem Church assigns specific persons to each essential ministry in the life and functioning of the community (verse 3). Let us avoid allowing the business of all to become no one s business. Poor planning and a neglect of roles and functions can lead to disorder within a congregation. Let us do what we can to support the distribution of delegated work assignments. Fifth, we note that the selection of those who serve in ministry should be a cooperative process involving the Holy Spirit, the people, and the pastors. The seven are men full of the Holy Spirit (verses 3 and 5). It is the people s role to reply, Axios! at an ordination when the bishop declares, Axios, he is worthy. Let us wholeheartedly support our clergy and leaders! A sixth apostolic principle requires that candidates for ministry exhibit the active presence of the Holy Spirit, showing signs of wisdom (verse 3) and faith (verse 5). Of course only God sees the heart, and sometimes mistakes are made. The deacon Nicolas later became the leader of a heresy condemned by the Lord and the Church (Revelations 2:6, 15). As we participate in selecting leaders, let us strive to do God s will. Finally, we observe that commissioning for ministry takes place in the Church s assemblies for prayer (Acts 6:2, 6), including ordination to both the major and minor orders. In many communities, elected and appointed lay officers are also blessed at the end of liturgy. When we speak of stewardship and family we must also consider stewardship of family. Most often, we stress the importance of stewardship of the great gifts of God's material world, but which of God's gifts is greater than family? As Orthodox Christians, we are also stewards of our Church family - those with whom we worship, fellowship and serve the community. In the same way that we care for our immediate family, we also care for our Christian brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. In his book on the Eucharist/Divine Liturgy, Fr. Alexander Schmemann explains that in the early church, the Eucharistic sacrifice was offered by all the members of the church. Each person coming to the gathering of the Church brought with them everything they could spare for the needs of the Church. This meant for the sustenance of the clergy, widows and orphans, for helping the poor, and for all the good works of the Church. This is the Church that we as Orthodox Christians claim to be. In the Gospel of Matthew (6:19), Jesus instructs us, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal..." Often in life, we pursue and collect those things that do not last. We must ask, "One hundred years from now, where will our possessions be?" Our greatest blessing is our family. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to be stewards of this great gift. If we are faithful to this calling, perhaps our Lord will say to us as he did to the faithful steward, "Well done good and faithful steward" (Mt 25:23). METROPOLIS OF PITTSBURGH SUMMER CAMP 2015 The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh began online camper registration for Summer Camp 2015 at Camp Nazareth on Monday, March 16, 2015! JOY Sessions are for those currently in second grade through the sixth grade. GOYA Sessions are for those currently in grades seventh through twelfth. We are hoping to coordinate those going from the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the following sessions: JOY Session #1: Sunday, June 21, 2015 through Saturday, June 27, 2015 (Week One) GOYA Session #3: Sunday, July 5, 2015 through Saturday, July 11, 2015 (Week Three) Hurry and sign-up TODAY these sessions fill-up fast! RICE BOWL LENTEN PROJECT INITIAL COUNT The kids broke open their rice bowls in the gymnasium last Sunday and Mrs. Dieker's class and a few other kids and parents helped roll the coins. And believe me; we had a huge amount of coins. We are so blessed by our gracious and enthusiastic volunteers. We had a remarkable response. For our initial count, we collected $803.29 for needy kids in Christian orphanages around the world. This will feed 26 kids for a month, or 8 kids for 4 months, or 2 kids for a year. The options are endless. God bless you all for taking part in a very worthy cause. If you haven t turned in your rice bowl, there is still time to stop by the gymnasium today after communion to break it open. If you forgot your rice bowl today, you can make arrangement with either Helen Rankin or Eve Peratopoulos for a drop off time. CHURCH SCHOOL OPEN SHELTER PROJECT The Church School makes 175 sack lunches for the Open Shelter on the third Sunday of every month. The shelter serves people who are unable to provide basic needs for their families. We need the support of our students, parents, and members of our community to help meet our commitment to the shelter. Each month, the Church School seeks donations from the community.
