Femtosecond laser excitation: Ultrafast nanoacoustics at extremely high frequencies
Motivation (a) Ultrafast laser-generated nano-acoustical strain waves in materials are localized, short-lived lattice vibrations with many applications (b) Interest to use these strain waves for the dynamic characterization of nano-scale thermo-mechanical properties of materials under harsh environments, for example under electromagnetic and particle irradiation produced in fusion reaction chambers. The generation of very high-amplitude strain waves and their control at ultrafast time scales via shaped laser pulses is of significant importance.
Ultrafast laser excitation of metal filmsubstrate systems Electron dynamics J. Hohlfeld et al., Chem. Phys. 251, 237 (2000) Lattice dynamics (a) Non-thermal electron excitation (b) Electron thermalization (via e-e & e-ph) (c) Electron-lattice thermal equilibrium 1. Laser-induced strain 2. Strain propagation 3. Strain reflection from interface 4. Detection of strain at surface (echo)
In search of the best metallic transducer Why is Ti ideal for the study of ultrafast laser-induced thermo-mechanics? Very large electron-phonon coupling factor, G: Fast electron-lattice thermalization: distinguish between electron and lattice dynamics More efficient energy conversion of optical energy into thermo-mechanical strain Ti Au Z. Lin, L.V. Zhigilei, and V. Celli, Phys. Rev. B 77, (2008) High stress yield: High melting point Large strains with no lattice damage Ideal as internal coating of nuclear reactor chambers Ideal as a buffer material for cooling in bi-layer metal-substrate systems
Degenerate pump-probe transient reflectivity set-up Brillouin scattering observation through interference
Observing giant nano-acoustical strains Study of the transducer s nature: Ti transducer create order of magnitude higher Brillouin oscillations than Ag. Results attributed mainly to: a) ~20 times higher electron-phonon coupling coefficient, b) to high acoustic impedance matching between Ti and Si and c) to the high compressive yield strength of the Ti Study of the transducer s thickness: Interplay between the probe laser penetration length for the strain probing and the strain generation. Best film thickness seems to be around the penetration depth Important note: Ti as a transducer material allowing for strain detection using a laser probe wavelength (λ ~795 nm) which is away from the direct band gap value of Si at 3.4 ev where the Si acousto-optic coupling coefficients are higher. Probing: no need for laser frequency doubling or white light generation.
Theoretical Model I A revised version of the extended Two-Temperature Model (TTM) is used to account for the early and transient interaction of the non-thermal electron distribution with the electron and lattice baths (2) (2) T e (2) (2) (2) (2) (2) U Ce ke Te -G Te -TL t t T U C G T T T (2) 3 (2) L (2) (2) (2) el (2) (2) (2) (2) (2) L e - L (3 2 ) L jj t t j1 T C k T T (3) 3 (3) L (3) (3) (3) (3) (3) (3) (3) L L L - (3 2 ) L jj t j1 t U 2 ln 2 ee A J t U el h t 1 0 dm 1 exp p 1 2 z t t0 1 H ( ) ee t t dz 1 t ( p ) 0 HeL t t exp 4 ln 2 exp dt ee e and L are associated with electrons and lattice, respectively, k e is the thermal conductivity of the electrons. C e and C L are the heat capacity of electrons and lattice, respectively, G is the electron-phonon coupling factor while superscripts i correspond to the Ag/Ti (i = 2) and Si materials (i = 3), respectively, and T 0 = 300 K. ε jj correspond to components of thermally induced strains, J is the laser fluence, t p is the laser pulse duration, A is the absorbance, d m is the metal film thickness, Λ is the ballistic depth α is the absorption coefficient and t 0 = 3t p while H ee and H ep are functions that contain details and parameters related to the transient creation of non-thermal electron distribution
Theoretical Model II Connection with elastic theory Spatio-temporal distribution of thermally induced lattice displacement v: v v t z 2 (i) 2 (i) (i) (i) (i) (i) (i) (2) ( 2 ) (3 2 ) 2 2 (i) T L t The strain and stress along the z-axis are given by the expressions: (i) (i) v (i) (i) (i) (i) (i) (i) (2) (i), z ( 2 ) (3 2 ) TL T z 0 λ, μ, and α' are the Lamé constant, shear modulus and thermal expansion coefficients of the materials.
Theoretical Model Results Electron and Lattice Temperatures on surface Ti Ag Calculated strain pulse distribution in 25 nm metal/si systems as a function of depth, at different time instants. Solid blue and dot-dashed red lines correspond to Ti/Si and Ag/Si cases, respectively. Vertical dashed line corresponds to the metal/si interface position. Spatio-temporal evolution of Lattice Temperature Ti Ag The model predicts: The fast electron relaxation in Ti compare to Ag (~10 times faster) The higher lattice temperature of Ti compare to Ag (~1.5 higher) The higher strain generation in Si when Ti transducer is used compare to Ag (~4 times higher). For 25 nm thick Ti films the amplitude of the acoustic strain has peak values ~0.01, corresponding to a compressional stress of ~1.7 GPa! and has a localization od the order of 30 nm.
