General methods. Unless stated otherwise, all solvents were purified and dried according to standard methods prior to use. 1 H and 19 F NMR spectra were recorded on Varian or Agilent instrument (400 MHz and 376 MHz, 300 MHz and 282 MHz, respectively) and referenced relative to tetramethylsilane signal or residual protio solvent signals and CFCl 3 respectively. 13 C NMR spectra were recorded on Varian or Agilent instrument (100 MHz or 75 MHz) and referenced relative to residual solvent signals. Data for 1 H NMR are recorded as follows: chemical shift (δ, ppm), multiplicity (s = singlet, d = doublet, t = triplet, m = multiplet or unresolved, br = broad singlet, coupling constant(s) in Hz, integration). Data for 13 C NMR and 19 F NMR are reported in terms of chemical shift (δ, ppm). General procedure for the synthesis of substrates (1a-i) Compounds 1a-d [1-3] were prepared by reductive amination of ferrocene aldehyde with the corresponding amines. 1-Dimethylaminomethyl-1 -bromoferrocene was synthesized according to known literature [4]. Dimethylaminomethylferrocene (1a) Analytical data for 1a [1] : 1 H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 4.14 (t, J = 1.6 Hz, 2H), 4.08 (s, 7H), 3.25 (s, 2H), 2.14 (s, 6H). Pyrrolidin-1-ylmethylferrocene (1b) Analytical data for 1b [2] : 1 H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 4.18 (t, J = 0.9 Hz, 2H), 4.10 (m, 5H), 4.09 (s, 2H), 3.42 (s, 2H), 2.45 (t, J = 6.3 Hz, 4H), 1.71 (t, J = 4.4 Hz, 4H). S2

Piperidin-1-ylmethylferrocene (1c) Analytical data for 1c [3] : 1 H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 4.14 (t, J = 1.6 Hz, 2H), 4.09-4.08 (m, 7H), 3.34 (s, 2H), 3.31 (s, 4H), 1.54-1.48 (m, 4H), 1.34 (t, J = 4.4 Hz, 2H). Methylpropylaminomethylferrocene (1d) Analytical data for 1d [3] : 1 H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 4.16 (s, 2H), 4.11 (s, 7H), 3.39 (s, 2H), 2.25 (s, 2H), 2.15 (s, 3H), 1.55-1.42 (m, 2H), 0.88 (t, J = 7.2 Hz, 3H). Procedure A: To a solution of 1,1 -dibromoferrocene (5.58 g, 30 mmol, 1 equiv.) in hexane (100 ml) at 0 o C was successively added TMEDA (3.49 g, 30 mmol, 1 equiv.) and n BuLi (25.2 ml, 63 mmol, 2.1 equiv.). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 19 h. Then DMF (6.58 g, 90 mmol, 3 equiv.) was added dropwise. After that, the mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched with ice-cold water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na 2 SO 4 and filtrated. After the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the crude aldehyde was obtained and used directly in the next step. To a solution of the above obtained aldehyde (2.3 g, 9.5 mmol, 1.0 equiv.) in S3

methanol (30 ml) were added triethylamine (1.35 g, 13.3 mmol, 1.4 equiv.), 4Å MS (400 mg) and dimethylamine hydrochloride (0.85 g, 10.5 mmol, 1.1 equiv.). Then sodium cyanoborohydride (0.78 g, 12.35 mmol, 1.3 equiv.) was added. The mixture was stirred overnight. Then the reaction mixture was filtrated through a pad of celite. After the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/petroleum = 1/4 to 2:1, v/v) to give 1e (0.78 g, 17.7% yield). Analytical data for 1e [5] : 1 H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 9.87 (s, 1H), 4.68 (d, J = 1.6 Hz, 2H), 4.51 (d, J = 1.2 Hz, 2H), 4.22 (d, J = 1.2 Hz, 2H), 4.18 (d, J = 1.6 Hz, 2H), 3.12 (s, 2H), 2.10 (s, 6H). To a solution of 1-dimethylaminomethyl-1 -bromoferrocene (1 equiv.) in tetrahydrofuran (0.2 mol/l) at -78 o C was added n BuLi (1.1 equiv.). The reaction mixture was stirred at -78 o C for 2.5 h. Then the corresponding electrophile reagent (1.5 equiv.) was added dropwise. After that, the mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched with ice-cold water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na 2 SO 4 and filtrated. After the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/petroleum = 1/10, v/v) to give 1f-i. 1-Dimethylaminomethyl-1 -(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)ferrocene (1f) Yellow solid (0.26 g, 22% yield). Analytical data for 1f: m.p. = 55.3-57.6 o C. 1 H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 4.20 (t, J = 1.6 Hz, 2H), 4.14 (t, J = 2.0 Hz, 2H), 4.10-4.09 (m, 4H), 3.26 (s, 2H), 2.26 (s, 6H), 1.48 (s, 6H). 13 C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl 3 ) δ 100.8, 84.5, 69.8, 68.4, 68.1, 68.0, 66.2, 58.6, 45.3, 31.3. Synthesis of planar chiral catalysts or ligands and their applications in asymmetric reactions To a solution of (R p )-1-dimethylaminomethyl-2-(bezofuran-2-yl)ferrocene 3a (1 equiv.) in diethyl ether (0.06 mol/l) at -78 o C was added t BuLi (1.5 equiv.). The reaction mixture was stirred at -78 o C for 5 h. Then the corresponding electrophile reagent (2.0 equiv.) (dissolved in diethyl ether, 0.2 mol/l) was added dropwise. After that, the mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched with ice-cold water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na 2 SO 4 and filtrated. After the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/petroleum = 1/20, v/v) to give 4.
