T he m ethod of p rincipal componen t analysis w as emp loyed to determ ine the w eigh t value of each index, and the so il feasib ility fo r H uπnan tobacco2grow ing area w as evaluated by estim ating in tegrated fertility index ( IF I ) of each so il samp le. T he resu lts indicated that: (1) con ten ts of o rgan ic m atters, to tal N and hydro lytic N in H uπnan tobacco2grow ing so ils w ere rich, bu t con ten ts of P (to tal P and availab le P) and K (to tal K and availab le K) in so ils w ere low. ph value, availab le S and w ater so lub le C l w ere su itab le. (2) T here ex isted sign ifican t variation fo r the so il fertility of H uπnan tobacco2 grow ing area. IF I values of the w ho le p rovince ranged from 0. 127 to 0. 968, w ith the m ean of 0. 547 and the coefficien t variation of 19. 17%. (3) A cco rding to IF I values, so il fertility of the w ho le p rovince cou ld be classified in to five grades: h igher, h igh, m edium, low and low er. T he p ropo rtion of so il fertility grades above m edium w as 92. 3%. T he IF I values of L ongshan and L iuyang w ere h igher; tho se of Dongπan and H engnan w ere low er; and tho se of o ther coun ties w ere m edium.
