Femtosecond laser excitation: Ultrafast nanoacoustics at extremely high frequencies
Motivation (a) Ultrafast laser-generated nano-acoustical strain waves in materials are localized, short-lived lattice vibrations with many applications (b) Interest to use these strain waves for the dynamic characterization of nano-scale thermo-mechanical properties of materials under harsh environments, for example under electromagnetic and particle irradiation produced in fusion reaction chambers. The generation of very high-amplitude strain waves and their control at ultrafast time scales via shaped laser pulses is of significant importance.

Degenerate pump-probe transient reflectivity set-up Brillouin scattering observation through interference
Observing giant nano-acoustical strains Study of the transducer s nature: Ti transducer create order of magnitude higher Brillouin oscillations than Ag. Results attributed mainly to: a) ~20 times higher electron-phonon coupling coefficient, b) to high acoustic impedance matching between Ti and Si and c) to the high compressive yield strength of the Ti Study of the transducer s thickness: Interplay between the probe laser penetration length for the strain probing and the strain generation. Best film thickness seems to be around the penetration depth Important note: Ti as a transducer material allowing for strain detection using a laser probe wavelength (λ ~795 nm) which is away from the direct band gap value of Si at 3.4 ev where the Si acousto-optic coupling coefficients are higher. Probing: no need for laser frequency doubling or white light generation.

Theoretical Model Results Electron and Lattice Temperatures on surface Ti Ag Calculated strain pulse distribution in 25 nm metal/si systems as a function of depth, at different time instants. Solid blue and dot-dashed red lines correspond to Ti/Si and Ag/Si cases, respectively. Vertical dashed line corresponds to the metal/si interface position. Spatio-temporal evolution of Lattice Temperature Ti Ag The model predicts: The fast electron relaxation in Ti compare to Ag (~10 times faster) The higher lattice temperature of Ti compare to Ag (~1.5 higher) The higher strain generation in Si when Ti transducer is used compare to Ag (~4 times higher). For 25 nm thick Ti films the amplitude of the acoustic strain has peak values ~0.01, corresponding to a compressional stress of ~1.7 GPa! and has a localization od the order of 30 nm.
