SERVICE OF DAILY VESPERS Priest: Blessed is our God, always, now, and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Ἀµήν. Proemial Psalm (Psalm 103) Προοιµιακός (Ψαλµὸς ργ ) * Come, let us worship and fall down * Δεῦτε, προσκυνήσωµεν καὶ before God, our King. Come let us worship and fall down Δεῦτε, προσκυνήσωµεν καὶ before Christ, our King and God. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, the King and our God. Bless the Lord, my soul; Lord my God, you are exceedingly magnified; You are clothed in confession and majesty, You cover Yourself with light as with a garment. Who spreads the heaven like a curtain; Who covers His chambers with waters. Who appoints the clouds for His ascent, Who walks on the wings of the winds. Who makes His Angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire. Who establishes the earth on its foundations, so that it should not move unto to the ages of ages. * From Pascha until its Apodosis instead of Come, let us worship..., we chant: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life, (thrice, once from the Holy of Holies, and twice by the choir).

The abyss like a garment is His mantle, upon the mountains shall the waters stand. At Your rebuke They will flee, at the thunder of Your voice they will fear. Mountains rise up and the plains sink down, to the place You have appointed. A boundary is set so that they shall not pass, neither return to cover the earth. Who sends forth springs in the valleys, the waters will run between the mountains. From them all beasts of the field shall drink, wild asses will quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the heavens will dwell, they will sing among the rocks. Who waters the mountains from His chambers, the earth shall be satisfied with the fruit of Your works. Who brings forth grass for the cattle, and plants for the service of men. To bring forth bread from the earth, and wine to gladden the heart of man. To make his face cheerful with oil, and bread to strengthen the heart of man. The trees of the plain are fed, the cedars of Lebanon, which You planted. There sparrows make their nests, the house of the heron is among them. The high mountains are for the harts, the rock protects the hares. He has made the moon for seasons, the Ἐποίησε σελήνην εἰς καιρούς ὁ ἥλιος sun knows its going down. 2

You appointed the darkness, and there was the night, wherein all the beasts of the forest move about. Young lions roaring after their prey, and seeking their food from God. The sun arises, and they gather together, and they lie down in their dens. Man goes forth to his work, and to his labor until the evening. How magnified are Your works, Lord, in wisdom You have made them all, the earth is filled with Your creation. That sea, great and wide, wherein there are innumerable creeping things, small living creatures with the great. There ships travel, that dragon whom You made to play therein. All things wait on You, to give them their food in due season, when You give it to them, they will gather it. When You open Your hand, all things shall be filled with goodness. When You turn away Your face, they shall be troubled. You will take away their spirit, and they shall cease, and they shall return to their dust. You will send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. Let the glory of the Lord be to the ages, the Lord will rejoice in His works. Who looks upon the earth and makes it Ὁ ἐπιβλέπων ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ ποιῶν tremble, Who touches the mountains αὐτὴν τρέµειν, ὁ ἁπτόµενος τῶν ὀρέων, and they smoke. 3

I will sing to the Lord in my life, I will chant to my God for as long as I have my being; may my words be pleasing to Him, for I will rejoice in the Lord. May sinners cease from the earth, and may those who work iniquity exist be no more. Bless the Lord, my soul. (Again) The sun knows its setting, darkness comes, and there is night. (Again) How magnified are Your works, Lord, in wisdom You have made them all. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. Our Hope, O Lord, glory to You. The following verses are intoned by the chanter: Set a watch before my mouth, Lord, and a door of restraint before my lips. Do not incline my heart to evil words, to make excuse with excuses in sins. With men that work iniquity; and I will not join with their chosen. The righteous man will chasten me with mercy, and reprove me; but do not let the oil of the sinner anoint my head. For yet more is my prayer against their pleasantries; their judges have been swallowed up near the rock. They shall hear my words, for they are sweetened; as a clod of earth is broken on the earth, their bones have been scattered near to Hades. For to You, Lord, Lord, are my eyes, I have hoped in You; do not take my soul away. Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me, and from the traps of those who work iniquity. The sinners shall fall into their own net; I am alone until I pass by. Psalm 141 and Stichera I cried with my voice to the Lord, I made supplication with my voice to the Lord. I will pour out my supplication before Him, I will declare my affliction before Him. When my spirit was fainting within me, Ἐν τῷ ἐκλείπειν ἐξ ἐµοῦ τὸ πνεῦµά µου, then You knew my paths. 7

In that way on which I have walked, they hid a snare for me. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, and there was no one who knew me. Flight has failed me, and there is no one who watches out for my soul. I have cried to You, Lord I said: You are my Hope, You are my Portion in the land of the living. Attend to my supplication, for I am brought very low. Deliver me from those who persecute me, for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison that I may confess Your name. The righteous shall wait patiently for me until You reward me. Out of the depths I have cried to You, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
