2 ΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΕΣΠΕΡΙΝΟΥ Ἐπιστάντος τοῦ καιροῦ τοῦ Ἑσπερινοῦ, ἀπέρχεται Ὁ ἱερεὺς σὺν τῷ Διακόνῳ καὶ ποιοῦσι μετάνοιαν τῷ Προεστῶτι, τουτέστιν τῷ Ἡγουμένῳ, ἤ, ἀπόντος, εἰς τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰσέρχονται διὰ τῆς πλαγίας εἰς τὸ ἅγιον βῆμα. Καὶ προσκυνήσαντες τρὶς πρὸ τῆς ἁγίας Τραπέζης ἀσπάεζατι Ὁ ἱερεὺς τὸ ἅγιον Εὐαγγέλιον καὶ τὴν ἁγίαν Τράπεζαν καὶ λαβὼν τὸ ἐπιτραχήλιον εὐλογεῖ καὶ περιβάλλεται αὐτό. Εἶτα ἱστάμενος ἀσκεπὴς πρὸ τῆς ἁγίας Τραπέζης, ἀνοιγέντος τοῦ καταπετάσματος, ἐκφωνεῖ Εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν πάντοτε, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀιῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ὁ Ἀναγνώστης Ἀμήν. Καὶ ὁ Προεστὼς ἀναγινώσκει τὸν προοιμιακὸν ψαλμὸν ᾧδε. Δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν τῷ Βασιλεῖ ἡμῶν Θεῷ. Δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν Χριστῷ τῷ Βασιλεῖ ἡμῶν Θεῷ. Δεῦτε προσκυνήσωμεν καὶ προσπέσωμεν αὐτῷ Χριστῷ τῷ Βασιλεῖ καὶ Θεῷ ἡμῶν. ΨΑΛΜΟΣ ΡΓ. (103) (Προοιμιακὸς) Εὐλόγει, ἡ ψυχή μου, τὸν Κὺριον Κύριε ὁ Θεός μου, ἐμεγαλύνθης σφόδρα. Ἐξομολόγησιν καὶ μεγαλοπρέπειαν ἐνεδύσω, ἀνα-βαλλόμενος φῶς ὡς ἱμάτιον. Ἐκτείνων τὸν οὐρανὸν ὡσεὶ δέῤῥιν, ὁ στεγάζων ἐν ὕδασι τὰ ὑπερῷα αὐτοῦ. Ὁ τιθεὶς νέφη τὴν ἐπίβασιν αὐτοῦ, ὁ περιπατῶν ἐπὶ πτερύγων ἀνέμων. THE SERVICE OF VESPERS When it is the time for Vespers, The Priest, together with the Deacon, exit and make a metanoia before President, that is the Abbot, or, in his absence, his Throne, and then enter through the side door to the Holy Sanctuary. They come before the Holy Table and make three matanoias, and the Priest reverences both the Holy Gospel and the Holy Table, while the Deacon only reverences the Holy Table. The Priest takes his epitrachilion, blesses it and puts it on. Then, standing before the Holy Table, with his head uncovered, and having opened the curtain, he intones: Blessed is our God, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Reader: Amen. And the President reads the introductory psalm. Come, let us worship and fall down before God our King. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and God. Come, let us worship and fall down before Him, Christ our King, our God. PSALM 103 (Introductory) Bless the Lord, my soul! O Lord my God, you have been greatly magnified. You have clothed yourself with thanksgiving and majesty, wrapping yourself in light as in a cloak, Stretching out the heavens like a curtain, roofing his upper chambers with waters, Placing clouds as his mount, walking on the wings of the wind,

Ὁ θεμελιῶν τὴν γῆν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀσφάλειαν αὐτῆς, οὐ κλιθήσεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος. Ἄβυσσος ὡς ἱμάτιον τὸ περιβόλαιον αὐτοῦ, ἐπὶ τῶν ὀρέων στήσονται ὕδατα. Ἀπὸ ἐπιτιμήσεώς σου φεύξονται, ἀπὸ φωνῆς βροντῆς σου δειλιάσουσιν. Ἀναβαίνουσιν ὄρη καὶ καταβαίνουσι πεδία εἰς τὸν τόπον, ὅν ἐθεμελίωσας αὐτά. Ὅριον ἔθου, ὅ οὐ παρελεύσονται, οὐδὲ ἐπιστρέ-ψουσι καλύψαι τὴν γῆν. Ὅ ἐξαποστέλλων πηγὰς ἐν φάραγξιν, ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὀρέων διελεύσονται ὕδατα. Ποτιοῦσι πάντα τὰ θηρία τοῦ ἀγροῦ, προσδέξονται ὄναγροι εἰς δίψαν αὐτῶν. Ἐπ αὐτὰ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκηνώσει, ἐκ μέσου τῶν πετρῶν δώσουσι φωνήν. Ποτίζων ὄρη ἐκ τῶν ὑπερῴων αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ καρποῦ τῶν ἔργων σου χορτασθήσεται ἡ γῆ. Ὁ ἐξανατέλλων χόρτον τοῖς κτήνεσι, καὶ χλόην τῇ δουλείᾳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων τοῦ ἐξαγαγεῖν ἄρτον ἐκ τῆς γῆς. Καὶ οἶνος εὐφραίνει καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου τοῦ ἱλαρῦναι πρόσωπον ἐν ἐλαίῳ, καὶ ἄρτος καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου στηρίζει. Χορτασθήσονται τὰ ξύλα τοῦ πεδίου, αἱ κέρδοι τοῦ Λιβάνου, ἅς ἐφύτευσας. Ἐκεῖ στρουθία ἐννοσσεύσουσι, τοῦ ἐρῳδιοῦ ἡ κατοικία ἡγεῖται αὐτῶν. Making spirits his Angels and a flame of fire his Ministers, Establishing the earth on its sure base; it will not be moved to age on age. The deep, like a cloak, is its mantle; waters will stand upon the mountains. At your rebuke they will flee; they will quail at the voice of your thunder. The mountains rise and the plains descend to the place which you established for them. You fixed a limit that they will not pass, nor will they return to cover the earth. You send out springs into the valleys; waters will run between the mountains. They will give drink to all the beasts of the field; the wild asses will await them to quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the air will make their dwelling: and sing among the rocks. He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the earth will be filled from the fruit of your works. He makes grass spring up for the cattle, and green herb for the service of mankind; to bring food out of the earth, And wine makes glad the human heart; to make the face cheerful with oil, and bread strengthens the human heart. The trees of the plain will be satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon that you planted. There the sparrows will build their nests; the heron s dwelling is at their head.

4 THE SERVICE OF KNEELING Ὄρη τὰ ὑψηλὰ ταῖς ἐλάφοις, πέτρα καταφυγὴ τοῖς λαγωοῖς. Ἐποίησε σελήνην εἰς καιρούς ὁ ἥλιος ἔγνω τὴν δύσιν αὐτοῦ. Ἔθου σκότος, καὶ ἐγένετο νύξ ἐν αὐτῇ διελεύσονται πάντα τὰ θηρία τοῦ δρυμοῦ. Σκύμνοι ὠρυόμενοι τοῦ ἁρπάσαι, καὶ ζητῆσαι παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ βρῶσιν αὐτοῖς. Ἀνέτειλεν ὁ ἥλιος, καὶ συνήχθησαν, καὶ εἰς τὰς μάνδρας αὐτῶν κοιτασθήσονται. Ἐξελεύσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐπὶ τὸ ἔργον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν ἐργασίαν αὐτοῦ ἕως ἑσπέρας. Ὡς ἐμεγαλύνθη τὰ ἔργα σου, Κύριε πάντα ἐν σο-φίᾳ ἐποίησας! ἐπληρώθη ἡ γῆ τῆς κτίσεώς σου. Αὕτη ἡ θάλασσα ἡ μεγάλη καὶ εὐρύχωρος ἐκεῖ ἑρπετά, ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός, ζῷα μικρὰ μετὰ μεγά-λων. Ἐκεῖ πλοῖα διαπορεύσονται δράκων οὗτος, ὅν ἔπλασας ἐμπαίζειν αὐτῇ. Πάντα πρὸς σὲ προσδοκῶσι, δοῦναι τὴν τροφὴν αὐτῶν εἰς εὔκαιρον δόντος σου αὐτοῖς συλλέξουσιν. Ἀνοίξαντός σου τὴν χεῖρα, τὰ σύμπαντα πλησθή-σονται χρηστότητος ἀποστρέψαντος δέ σου τὸ πρόσωπον, ταραχθήσονται. Ἀντανελεῖς τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκλείψουσι, καὶ εἰς τὸν χοῦν αὐτῶν ἐπιστρέψουσιν. The high mountains are for the deer; rocks a refuge for hares. He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knew the hour of its setting. You appointed darkness, and it was night, in which all the beasts of the forest will prowl; Young lions roaring to plunder and to seek their food from God. The sun rose and they were gathered together and they will lie down in their dens. Man will go out to his labor; and to his laboring until evening. How your works have been magnified, O Lord. With wisdom you have made them all, and the earth has been filled with your creation. Also this great, wide sea; there are creeping things without number, living creatures small and great. There ships go to and fro; this dragon which you fashioned to sport in it. All things look to you to give them their food in due season. When you give it them, they will gather it. When you open your hand all things will be filled with goodness. But when you turn away your face they will be troubled. You will take away their spirit, and they will perish and return to their dust.

5 GREAT VESPERS FOR MONDAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT 5 Ἐξαποστελεῖς τὸ πνεῦμά σου, καὶ κτισθήσονται, καὶ ἀνακαινιεῖς τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς. Ἤτω ἡ δόξα Κυρίου εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας εὐφραν-θήσεται Κύριος ἐπὶ τοῖς ἔργοις αὑτοῦ. Ὁ ἐπιβλέπων ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ ποιῶν αὐτὴν τρέμειν ὁ ἁπτόμενος τῶν ὀρέων καὶ καπνίζονται. ᾌσω τῷ Κυρίῳ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ μου, ψαλῶ τῷ Θεῷ μου ἕως ὑπάρχω. Ἡδυνθείη αὐτῷ ἡ διαλογή μου, ἐγὼ δὲ εὐφρανθήσομαι επὶ τῷ Κυρίῳ. Ἐκλείποιεν ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἄνομοι, ὥστε μὴ ὑπάρχειν αὐτούς. Εὐλόγει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον. Καὶ πάλιν. Ὁ ἥλιος ἔγνω τὴν δύσιν αὐτοῦ. Ἔθου σκότος, καὶ ἐγένετο νύξ Ὡς ἐμεγαλύνθη τὰ ἔργα σου, Κύριε πάντα ἐν σοφίᾳ ἐποίησας! Δόξα. Καὶ νῦν. Ἀλληλούϊα, Ἀλληλούϊα, Ἀλληλούϊα δόξα σοι Ὁ Θεὸς (τρίς). (Καὶ μεθ ἑκάστην δέησιν) You will send forth your spirit, and they will be created, and you will renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure to the ages. The Lord will rejoice at his works. He looks upon the earth and makes it tremble. He touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord while I live; I will praise my God while I exist. May my words be pleasing to him. While as for me, I shall rejoice in the Lord. O that sinners might perish from the earth, and the wicked, so that they are no more. Bless the Lord, my soul! And again The sun knew the hour of its setting: you made darkness, and it was night. How your works have been magnified, O Lord. With wisdom you have made them all! Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Glory to you, O God. Ὑπὲρ τῆς εἰρήνης τοῦ σύμπαντος κόσμου, εὐσταθείας τῶν ἁγίων τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἐκκλησιῶν, καὶ τῆς τῶν πάντων ἑνώσεως, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν. For the peace of the whole world, the good estate of the holy churches of God and the union of all, let us pray to the Lord. For this holy house and those who with faith, reverence and fear of God enter therein, let us pray to the Lord. For our father and Archbishop (name), the honorable presbytery, the diaconate in Christ, all the clergy and the people, let us pray to the Lord. For our president, civil authorities and armed forces, let us pray to the Lord. For this city, every city (or Holy Monastery, land, or island), and countryside and for the faithful who dwell therein, let us pray to the Lord. For healthful seasons, abundance of the fruits of the earth and peaceful times, let us pray to the Lord. For travelers by sea, land and air, the sick, the suffering, captives and their salvation, let us pray to the Lord. For our deliverance from all tribulation, wrath, danger and necessity, let us pray to the Lord. Help us; save us; have mercy on us; and keep us, O God, by Your grace. Chanter: Lord have mercy. PSALM 140 Lord, I have cried unto You; hear me. Hear me, O Lord. Lord, I have cried unto you; hear me. Attend to the voice of my supplication when I cry unto You; hear me, O Lord. Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice; hear me, O Lord. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth and a protecting door about my lips. Incline not my heart to evil words to make excuses in sins. With those who work iniquity; and I will not associate with the choicest of them. Let the righteous man chasten me with mercy and reprove me; as for the oil of the sinner, let it not anoint my head. For even my prayer is against their good pleasure. Their judges have been swallowed up like a rock.

8 THE SERVICE OF KNEELING Ἀκούσονται τὰ ῥήματά μου, ὅτι ἡδύνθησαν ὡσεὶ πάχος γῆς ἐῤῥάγη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, διεσκορπίσθη τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν παρὰ τὸν ᾅδην. Ὅτι πρὸς Σέ, Κύριε, Κύριε, οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου ἐπὶ σοὶ ἤλπισα, μὴ ἀντανέλῃς τὴν ψυχὴν μου. Φύλαξόν με ἀπὸ παγίδος, ἧς συνεστήσαντό μοι, καὶ ἀπὸ σκανδάλων τῶν ἐργαζομένων τὴν ἀνομίαν. Πεσοῦνατι ἐν ἀμφιβλήστρῳ αὐτῶν οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί, κατὰ μόνας εἰμὶ ἐγὼ, ἕως ἄν παρέλθω. ΨΑΛΜΟΣ ΡΜΑ. (141) Φωνῇ μου πρὸς Κύριον ἐκέκραξα, φωνῇ μου πρὸς Κύριον ἐδεήθην. Ἐκχεῶ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ τὴν δέησίν μου, τὴν θλῖψίν μου ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἀπαγγελῶ. Ἐν τῷ ἐκλείπειν ἐξ ἐμοῦ τὸ πνεῦμά μου, καὶ σὺ ἔγνως τὰς τρίβους μου. Ἐν ὁδῷ ταύτῃ, ᾗ ἐπορευόμην, ἔκρυψαν παγίδα μοι. Κατενόουν εἰς τὰ δεξιά, καὶ ἐπέβλεπον, καὶ οὐκ ἧν ὁ ἐπιγνώσκων με. Ἀπώλετο φυγὴ ἀπ ἐμοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ἐκζητῶν τὴν ψυχήν μου. Ἐκέκραξα πρὸς σέ, Κύριε εἶπα Σὺ εἶ ἐλπίς μου, μερίς μου εἷ ἐν γῇ ζώντων. Πρόσχες πρὸς τὴν δέησίν μου, ὅτι ἐταπεινώθην σφόδρα. The shall hear my words, for they are sweet. As a clod of earth is broken on the ground, so their bones are scattered by the side of Hades. For to You, O Lord, O Lord, are my eyes; I have hoped in You; take not away my soul. Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me, and from the stumbling blocks of those who work iniquity. The sinners shall fall into their own net. I am apart from them until I pass away. PSALM 140 With my voice, to the Lord have I cried; with my voice, to the Lord have I made my supplication. I shall pour out before Him my supplication; my affliction before Him shall I declare, As my spirit is departing from within me; and You knew my paths. In this way on which I was walking they hid a snare for me. I looked to my right and beheld, and there was no one that knew me. There is no escape for me, and no one searching for my soul. I cried to You, O Lord; I said: You are my hope, You are my portion in the land of the living. Attend to my supplication; for I have been greatly humbled.

Τείχισον ἡμᾶς ἁγίοις Ἀγγέλοις σου ὅπλισον ἡμᾶς ὅπλοις δικαιοσύνοις σου, περιχαράκωσον ἡμᾶς τῇ ἀληθείᾳ σου, φρούρησον ἡμᾶς τῇ δυνάμει σου, ῥῦσαι our offences the depth of your compassion. Look from your holy height, Lord, upon your people here present and who await from you rich mercy. Visit us in your goodness; deliver us from the oppression of the devil; make our lives safe with your holy and sacred laws. Entrust your people to a faithful Angel guardian; gather us all into your kingdom; give pardon to all who hope in you; forgive their sins and ours; purify us by the operation of your holy Spirit; destroy all the wiles of the foe against us. He adds this prayer: Blessed are you Lord, Master almighty, who made the day light with the light of the sun and the night radiant with the rays of fire; who have granted us to pass through the length of the day and to draw near the beginnings of the night. Hear our supplication and that of all your people. And pardoning all of us our offences, voluntary and involuntary, accept our evening entreaties and send down the multitude of your rich mercy and acts of compassion on your inheritance. Wall us about with your holy Angels; arm us with the arms of justice; fence us with the rampart of your truth; guard us by your power; deliver us from every misfortune and from every trick of the adversary. Grant us also that both the present day with the coming night and all the days of our life may be perfect, holy, peaceful, sinless, without stumbling, without dreams, at the prayers of the holy Mother of God and of all the Saints who have been well-pleasing to you since time began.

Do you, then, the radiance of the Father, the unchangeable and unalterable stamp of his Essence and nature, the source of salvation and grace, open also the lips of me, a sinner, and teach me how I should and for whom I ought to pray, for you know the multitude of my sins, but your compassion will overcome their measureless number. Govern my life, by the ineffable power of your wisdom, you who govern all creation by a word, who are the fair haven of the storm-tossed, and make known to me the way in which I shall walk. Grant to my thoughts the Spirit of your wisdom, to my folly the Spirit of understanding, with the Spirit of your fear overshadow my deeds. Renew a right Spirit within my inward parts and make firm the instability of my mind with the sovereign Spirit, so that guided each day by your good Spirit to what is profitable, I may be found worthy to do your commandments and always keep in mind your Coming, which searches out all that we have done. Do not neglect me, so that I become deceived by the corrupted pleasures of the world, but give me strength to yearn for the enjoyment of the treasures which are to come. For you said, Master, that whatever someone asks in your name they receive without restraint from your co-eternal God and Father. And so I a sinner at the coming of your holy Spirit implore your goodness, The things that I have prayed for grant me for my salvation. Yes, Lord, the loving and most generous giver of every benefaction, for it is you who give superabundantly more than we ask. It is you who are compassionate, merciful, who without sin became a partaker in our flesh and who in loving compassion bend down to those who bend the knee to you and became the atonement for our sins. Give your people, Lord, your acts of pity; hear us from your holy heaven; sanctify us by the power of your saving right hand; shelter us in the shelter of your wings; do not despise the works of your hands. Against you alone we have sinned,

We do not know how to worship a strange god, nor to spread out our hands, Master, to another god. Forgive us our offences and, accepting our supplications on our bended knees, stretch out to us all a helping hand. Accept the prayer of all as acceptable incense, rising up before your kingdom, above all goodness. Ὁ ἱερεὺς τὴν Εὐχὴν Ἡ ἀενάως βρύουσα ζωτικὴ καὶ φωτιστικὴ πηγή, ἡ συναΐδιος τοῦ Πατρὸς δημιουργικὴ δύναμις, ὁ πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκονομίαν, διὰ τὴν τῶν βροτῶν σωτηρίαν, ὑπερκάλλως πληρώσας, Χριστέ, ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν. Ὁ θανάτου δεσμοὺς ἀλύτους, καὶ κλεῖθρα ᾍδου διαῤῥήξας, πονηρῶν δὲ πνευμάτων πλήθη καταπατήσας, ὁ προσαγαγὼν σεαυτὸν ἄμωμον ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἱερεῖον, τὸ σῶμα δοὺς τὸ ἄχραντον εἰς θυσίαν, τὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας ἂψαυστόν τε καὶ ἄβατον, καὶ διὰ τῆς φρικτῆς ταύτης, καὶ ἀνεκδιηγήτου ἱερουργίας, ζωὴν ἡμῖν αἰώνιον χαρισάμενος, ὁ εἰς ᾍδου καταβάς, καὶ μοχλοὺς αἰωνίους συντρίψας, καὶ τοῖς κάτω καθημένοις ἄνοδον ὑποδείξας, τὸν δὲ ἀρχέκακον καὶ βύθιον δράκοντα, θεοσόφῳ δελεάσματι ἀγκιστρεύσας, καὶ σειραῖς ζόφου δεσμεύσας ἐν ταρτάρῳ, καὶ πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ, καὶ σκότει ἐξωτέρῳ, διὰ τῆς ἀπειροδυνάμου σου κατασφαλισάμενος ἰσχύος, ἡ μεγαλώνυμος σοφία τοῦ Πατρός, ὁ τοῖς ἐπηρεαζομένοις μέγας ἐπίκουρος φανείς, καὶ φωτίσας τοὺς ἐν σκότει, καὶ σκιᾷ θανάτου καθημένους. Σύ, δόξης ἀενάου Κύριε, καὶ Πατρὸς ὑψίστου Υἱὲ ἀγαπητέ, ἀΐδιον φῶς, ἐξ ἀϊδίου φωτός, Ἣλιε δικαιοσύνης, ἐπάκουσον ἡμῶν δεομένων σου, καὶ ἀνάπαυσον τὰς ψυχὰς τῶν δούλων σου, τῶν προκεκοιμημένων πατέρων καὶ ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν, καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν συγγενῶν κατὰ σάρκα, καὶ πάντων τῶν οἰκείων τῆς πίστεως, περὶ ὧν καὶ τὴν μνήμην ποιούμεθα νῦν, ὅτι ἐν σοὶ πάντων τὸ κράτος, καὶ ἐν Deacon: Again and again, on bended knees, let us pray to the Lord. Chanter: Lord, have mercy. The Priest prays: Christ our God, ever-flowing Spring, source of life and illumination, coeternal creative power of the Father, for the salvation of mortals, who fulfilled the whole dispensation with surpassing goodness; tore apart the indissoluble bonds of Death and the bars of Hell, trampling down multitudes of evil spirits; offered yourself as an unblemished oblation for our sake, giving your most pure body, intangible and inaccessible to every sin, as a sacrifice, and through this dread and inexpressible offering you granting us the grace of everlasting life. You descended into Hell, smashed the everlasting bars and showed the way up to those who sat below. With a bait of divine wisdom you hooked the author of evil, the dragon of the deep, bound him with cords of darkness in Tartarus and secured him with the unquenchable fire and the exterior darkness through your infinitely powerful strength. Glorious wisdom of the Father, who appeared to those in distress as a mighty helper and enlightened those who sat in darkness and the shadow of death, Lord of unending glory, beloved Son of the most high Father, eternal light from eternal light, Sun of justice, hear us who entreat you and give rest to the souls of your servants who have fallen asleep before us, our fathers, mothers and brethren and the rest of our relatives according to the flesh and all our kinsfolk of the household of the faith, whose memory we too now keep,
