DG Announcements Cyprus Rotary / District Rotary 2450 Nominations for District Governor Nominee 2014-15 for District 2452 Nominations for District Governor Nominee 2014-15 for District 2452 Friday, May 25, 2012 Dear Club President, Greetings Today 25 May 2012, I open the nominations for District Governor Nominee for District 2452 (Armenia, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, UAE) for the year 2014-15 with the following procedures. Eligible Clubs of District 2452 are invited to submit (if they wish) their suggestions of their members for District Governor Nominee 2014-15, and in view of the redistricting resolution, District 2452 shall be comprised of clubs of Armenia, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, UAE Only (without Egypt). District 2452 shall select its 2014-15 District Governor-Nominee by a Nominating Committee procedure as per the resolution passed on 20 May 2012 at the 76th District 2450 Conference in Aqaba, Jordan. A nominating committee that shall be charged with the duty to seek out and propose the best available candidate for governor-nominee in this process shall be comprised of Nine members, the Seven most recent past governors plus the current governor and the incoming Governor, provided each is still members of a club in D2452, as its members. A club may suggest only one of its own members as a candidate for governor-nominee. From Rotary International Past RI General Secretary Herbert Pigman dies Rotary International News -- 22 May 2012 Herbert A. Pigman, who served as RI general secretary and vice chair of the International PolioPlus Committee (IPPC), died 18 May in Ambia, Indiana, USA. He was 78. Pigman, a member of the Rotary Club of Boswell, served as RI general secretary from 1979 to 1986 and from 1993 until his retirement in 1995. In 1985, under his leader ship, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program, a public-private partnership created to assist international health agencies and governments in eradicating polio. Pigman served as vice chair of the IPPC from 2000 to 2005 and director of the PolioPlus Immunization Task Force from 1986 to 1989. He worked with the spearheading partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to help establish strategies and policies for ending the disease. The GPEI has lost a giant, and Rotary has lost someone who so clearly understood the willingness of Rotarians to finish the job, said Dr. Robert S. Scott, chair of the IPPC. He was an architect of the PolioPlus program and worked tirelessly towards the goal of eradicating polio. I lost not only a very wise and knowledgeable Rotarian in every aspect of PolioPlus but also a friend who was never too busy to call on for advice. As director of the PolioPlus task force, Pigman traveled widely, serving as Rotary s liaison to UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the national health ministries of many countries. The task force helped launch Rotary s polio immunization operations throughout Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Right from the start, Herbert Pigman was an aggressive leader and advocate in Rotary s fight to eradicate polio, said RI General Secretary John Hewko. His stewardship helped pave the way for Rotarians worldwide to help rid the world of this crippling disease. Pigman began his career with Rotary in 1956 as an assistant editor of The Rotarian magazine. From 1964 to 1975 he was RI undersecretary, responsible for Rotary s program development, publications, and international meetings. He served as executive assistant to the RI president from 1976 to 1978. In 1979, he was elected general secretary, and he served in that post until 1986. Pigman graduated from Franklin College in Indiana with a degree in journalism and received an honorary doctorate in the humanities. He also served as a trustee of the college. He pursued farming and newspaper publishing before his second term as RI general secretary began in 1993. He was a member of The Rotary Foundation centennial book committee. Pigman twice received Indiana s highest civilian honor, the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, in recognition of his distinguished work for Rotary. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; sons Thomas and Dan; and daughters Jenny, Sally, and Liz. Visitation will be held Wednesday, 23 May, from 16:00 to 20:00 at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport, Indiana, and Thursday, 24 May, from 11:00 to 13:00 at the Locust Grove Methodist Community Church in Ambia, where a service will be held. Interment will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the PolioPlus Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.gradyfuneralhome.com. Herbert A. Public Relations Plan Public Relations Plan Main target: To get more citizens aware, especially whose who leave in Nicosia area, about our club, and our activities. What is Rotary, who are the Rotarians, what does Rotary do. Specifically, we should try to overcome and to clarify a misunderstanding and a misperception that runs across a lot of people in Cyprus that Rotary is a kind of a "sect" (heresy). This is a quite negative approach from a lot of people in Cyprus that affects the expansion, the role and the function of our club and our organization in general, especially in Cyprus a country with citizens that have very strong bonds to their religion. Also, we should sick and aim to expose and to promote most of our major activities, through the media (local and national). Use of media: In our days the use of media, especially electronic media, is a very powerful, important and effective tool (and vehicle) in order to promote and to inform the public about our organizations and our club's activities. We are listing below some of our initial suggestions regarding the promotion of our club's activities through the media: Prepare and send press (news) releases to all media (electronic and printed) regarding our major activities. Arrange the participation of our President and/or other Board members to various local radio programs, in order to speak and to explain the role, the function and the importance of our organization and especially our Nicosia-Lefkothea club. Inform the media (especially some "key" media persons and journalists) but also the public, in general, about our official web-side, so they can visit it and get the appropriate information. They could also have a link to our weekly electronic bulletin in order to follow our meeting activities and other general activities and projects of our club. Events that could be attractive to the media: We should organize specific events that are attractive both to the media and to the general public. Such events could be "tea - afternoons", dinners, special "theme" nights, or special nights (parties) at a local night club (such event could be also attractive to younger people). We can also organize special events like a Christmas Gala dinner, a Carnival dance dinner, a Saint Valentine's Day special dinner, an Easter lunch day, out in the fields, with the traditional lamb "suvla", etc. We can invite one or two notable, expert speakers (according to specific subjects and fields) well known Doctor, or a well known media personality, to give a speech thus, organizing an event open to the general public. For all these events and activities we can always collaborate with other local clubs. Local government officials: We could arrange meetings of our Board Members with high positioned local government officials in order to inform them about our activities, our efforts to support and to help the society through our charity activities and events and to make them aware about our existence and our function, especially in the district of Nicosia. Such meetings will be largely covered by the media. 2. Anniversary Publication The club's public relations committee is finishing a glossy publication about the «25 years of Service To Τhe Community» of the Rotary Club of Nicosia- Lefkothea. Research, text and lay out by PP Christodoulos Achilleoudis.
