As students do not eat a full lunch at school, canteens only sell juices, cheese pies (τυρόπιτες), toast with cheese and fruit. Primary schools have two 10 minute breaks and one 30 minute break through the day when students can go to the canteen. Most primary schools operate from 8 15 am to 1 30 pm with some schools offering study time and enrichment activities like music or computer studies until 3 30 pm. When you want to wish someone a happy birthday, you say Να τα εκατοστίσεις which literally means May you live to be one hundred. The melody and words for the Happy Birthday song are different. Να ζήσεις (όνομα) Και χρόνια πολλά μεγάλος/η να γίνεις με άσπρα μαλλιά. Στην γη να σκορπίζει τις γνώσης το φως και όλοι να λένε να ένας σοφός. Name days As well as celebrating their birthday, most Greek people give each other a small present or a card on their name day (ονομαστική γιορτή). They will also treat their friends to special sweets. Typical Greek calendars show the name of a person for each day of the week. This person was a saint according to the Greek Orthodox Church. For example, if your name is Sophia and you happen to be in Greece on 17 November of any year, someone will probably come up to you and say: Χρόνια πολλά! 27 SUGGESTED TEACHING STRATEGIES Using the story Students: read the stories aloud and record themselves on audio cassette sequence the story using graphics and speech bubbles from a hard copy illustrate their own stories and present them to the class act out the stories and make video recordings if possible design an advertisement for the stories write profiles of the characters in the stories write summaries of the stories make up their own beginning or ending to the story continue the stories by writing the next chapter make up a class story: each student says or writes a sentence and it is added to by the next student write stories using the readers as a model. Using the activities Students: print and present their Write-a-story to the class create new Wonderwords using different vocabulary design sets of cards to play matching games create crosswords using the vocabulary from the stories create a list of alternative expressions that the dog on the skateboard could say write quiz questions and run a class quiz write and illustrate their own story using the Write-a-story activity as a model.
