1 ΤΟ «ΘΕΟΣ ΚΥΡΙΟΣ» GOD IS THE LORD Ήχος πλ.α Ψαλμός ριζ Θεός Κύριος και επέφανεν ημίν, ευλογημένος ο ερχόμενος εν ονόματι Κυρίου. Mode pl. 1 st Psalm 117 God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Στίχος α. Εξομολογείσθε τω Κυρίω, ότι αγαθός, ότι εις τον αιώνα το έλεος αυτού. (Ψαλμός ριζ 1) Στίχος β. Πάντα τα έθνη εκύκλωσάν με, και τω ονόματι Κυρίου ημυνάμην αυτούς. (Ψαλμός ριζ 10) Στίχος γ. Παρά Κυρίου εγένετο αύτη, και έστι θαυμαστή εν οφθαλμοίς ημών. (Ψαλμός ριζ 23) Verse 1. Give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, for his mercy is for ever. (Psalm 117, 1) Verse 2. All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them. (Psalm 117, 10) Verse3. This came about from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes. Let us worship the Word who is unoriginate* with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born* for our salvation, O believers, and let us sing His praise.* For in His goodness He was pleased* to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death,* and to raise up those who had died,* by His glorious Resurrection. 1

2 Δόξα... Τοῦ Προδρόμου. Ἦχος δ. Ταχὺ προκατάλαβε. Ἐκ γῆς ἀνατείλασα ἡ τοῦ Προδρόμου κεφαλή, ἀκτίνας ἀφίησι τῆς ἀφθαρσίας, πιστοῖς τῶν ἰάσεων ἄνωθεν συναθροίζει τὴν πληθῦν τῶν Ἀγγέλων, κάτωθεν συγκαλεῖται τῶν ἀνθρώπων τὸ γένος, ὁμόφωνον ἀναπέμψαι, δόξαν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ. Καὶ νῦν... Θεοτοκίον. Τὸ ἀπ αἰῶνος ἀπόκρυφον, καὶ Ἀγγέλοις ἄγνωστον μυστήριον, διὰ σοῦ Θεοτόκε τοῖς ἐπὶ γῆς πεφανέρωται, Θεὸς ἐν ἀσυγχύτῳ ἑνώσει σαρκούμενος, καὶ Σταυρὸν ἑκουσίως ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν καταδεξάμενος δι οὗ ἀναστήσας τὸν πρωτόπλαστον, ἔσωσεν ἐκ θανάτου τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν. Glory... For the Forerunner. Mode 4 th. Come quickly. The Forerunner's head has risen once again from the earth; * it sends forth the brilliant rays of incorruption and cures to the faithful all. * Above it has assembled the arrays of the Angels; * below it calls the human race to gather together. * In unison we offer up glory to Christ our God. O Theotokos, through you became manifest to us on earth the mystery, which was hid from eternity, and which the Angels themselves knew not: that God, uniting natures without confusion, becomes a man and accepts crucifixion for our salvation voluntarily. By virtue of this, resurrecting man whom He had first created, He saved our souls from death. 3 ΙΕΡΕΥΣ Ἔτι καὶ ἔτι, ἐν εἰρήνῃ τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν. PRIEST Again and again, in peace let us beseech the Lord. Ἀντιλαβοῦ, σῶσον, ἐλέησον καὶ διαφύλαξον ἡμᾶς, ὁ Θεός, τῇ Σῇ χάριτι. Succour, save, be merciful and protect us, O God, by Thy grace. Τῆς Παναγίας, ἀχράντου, ὑπερευλογημένης, ἐνδόξου, Δεσποίνης ἡμῶν, Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας, μετὰ πάντων τῶν Ἁγίων μνημονεύσαντες, ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἀλλήλους, καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ζωὴν ἡμῶν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ παραθώμεθα. Τὸν Σταυρὸν τοῦ Κυρίου ἐγκωμιάσωμεν, τὴν Ταφὴν τὴν ἁγίαν ὕμνοις τιμήσωμεν, καὶ τὴν Ἀνάστασιν αὐτοῦ ὑπερδοξάσωμεν ὅτι συνήγειρε νεκρούς, ἐκ τῶν μνημάτων ὡς Θεός, σκυλεύσας κράτος θανάτου, καὶ ἰσχὺν διαβόλου, καὶ τοῖς ἐν ᾅδῃ φῶς ἀνέτειλε. Let us honor the Cross of the Lord with solemn praise,* and His holy entombment extol with sacred hymns,* and His Rising from the dead supremely glorify;* for He despoiled the realm of death and the devil's might, for He is God;* then He resurrected* the dead from the graves together,* and made the light to dawn on those in hell. Glory... Whereas You, O Lord, were labeled dead, yet in fact You put death to death. And You, the very emptier of graves, were yourself interred. Soldiers overhead were guarding the sepulcher, even as You below resurrected the dead of all ages. Lord almighty and incomprehensible, glory to You. Καὶ νῦν. Θεοτοκίον. Τὸν συνάναρχον Λόγον. Χαῖρε πύλη Κυρίου ἡ ἀδιόδευτος χαῖρε τεῖχος καὶ σκέπη τῶν προστρεχόντων εἰς σέ χαῖρε ἀχείμαστε λιμὴν καὶ Ἀπειρόγαμε ἡ τεκοῦσα ἐν σαρκί τὸν Ποιητὴν σου καὶ Θεόν, πρεσβεύουσα μὴ ἐλλείπῃς, ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀνυμνούντων, καὶ προσκυνούντων τὸν Τόκον σου. 5 Κάθισμα β Κύριε, μετὰ τὴν τριήμερόν σου Ἀνάστασιν, καὶ τὴν τῶν Ἀποστόλων προσκύνησιν, ὁ Πέτρος ἐβόα σοι Γυναῖκες ἀπετόλμησαν, κἀγὼ ἐδειλίασα Λῃστὴς ἐθεολόγησε, κἀγὼ ἠρνησάμην σε ἆρα καλέσεις με τοῦ λοιποῦ μαθητήν; ἢ πάλιν δείξεις με ἁλαιέα βυθοῦ; ἀλλὰ μετανοοῦντά με δέξαι, ὁ Θεὸς καὶ σῶσόν με. Δόξα... Κύριε, ἐν μέσῳ σε προσήλωσαν, οἱ παράνομοι τῶν καταδίκων, καὶ λόγχῃ τὴν πλευράν σου ἐξεκέντησαν, ὦ Ἐλεῆμον ταφὴν δὲ κατεδέξω, ὁ λύσας ᾅδου τὰς πύλας, καὶ ἀνέστης τριήμερος ἔδραμον Γυναῖκες ἰδεῖν σε, καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν Ἀποστόλοις τὴν Ἔγερσιν Ὑπερυψούμενε Σωτήρ, ὃν ὑμνοῦσιν Ἄγγελοι, εὐλογημένε Κύριε δόξα σοι. 2 nd Kathisma After You had risen on the third day, O Lord, and after the Apostles had worshiped You, Peter cried out to You, ʺWomen stood courageously, but I acted cowardly. The Robber stated Your divinity, but I disavowed You. Will You ever call me Your disciple anymore, or will You again appoint me as a fisher of the deep? I pray You to receive me in repentance, O God, and save me.ʺ Glory... The violators of the Law had You crucified amid the convicts. Furthermore, they pierced Your side with a lance, O Lord of mercy. You accepted burial, You destroyed the gates of Hades, and on the third day You resurrected. The Women ran to see You, and they announced the resurrection to the Apostles. Supremely exalted Savior, whom the Angels extol, O blessed Lord, glory to You. Καὶ νῦν... Θεοτοκίον. Τὸν συνάναρχον Λόγον. Ἀπειρόγαμε Νύμφη Θεογεννήτρια, ἡ τῆς Εὔας τὴν λύπην χαροποιήσασα, ἀνυμνοῦμεν οἱ πιστοὶ καὶ προσκυνοῦμέν σε, ὅτι ἀνήγαγες ἡμᾶς ἐκ τῆς ἀρχαίας ἀρᾶς καὶ νῦν δυσώπει ἀπαύστως, πανύμνητε Παναγία, εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς. Bride unwedded, who nevertheless engendered God,* changing Eve's pain and sorrow into exultant joy,* we the faithful now extol you and we honor you;* for you have lifted us up from the primal curse.* And now entreat importunely* and unceasingly, O all-lauded* and all-holy one, that we be saved. 5

Τῶν ἀγγέλων ὁ δῆμος κατεπλάγη ὁρῶν σε ἐν νεκροῖς λογισθέντα, τοῦ θανάτου δέ, Σώτερ, τὴν ἰσχὺν καθελόντα καὶ σὺν ἑαυτῷ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐγείραντα καὶ ἐξ ᾅδου πάντας ἐλευθερώσαντα. Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, δίδαξόν με τὰ δικαιώματά σου. EVLOGITARIA Mode pl. 1 st Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples? Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrhbearing women. See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. Very early in the morning, the myrrhbearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, ʺThe time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.ʺ Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. When the myrrh bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, ʺWhy do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.ʺ 7

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to You, O God. Ἡ Ὑπακοὴ Ἦχος πλ. α' Ἀγγελικῇ ὁράσει τὸν νοῦν ἐκθαμβούμεναι, καὶ θεϊκῇ Ἐγέρσει τὴν ψυχὴν φωτιζόμεναι, αἱ Μυροφόροι τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις εὐηγγελίζοντο Ἀναγγείλατε ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι, τὴν Ἀνάστασιν τοῦ Κυρίου, συνεργοῦντος τοῖς θαύμασι, καὶ παρέχοντος ἡμῖν τὸ μέγα ἔλεος. Hypakoè Mode pl. 1 st Mentally amazed by the angelic apparition, inwardly illumined by the divine resurrection, the ointment bearing women brought good tidings to the Apostles. ʺProclaim the resurrection of the Lord among the Gentiles, as He works with you by means of miracles, granting us His great mercy.ʺ 9

10 ΟΙ ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΟΙ Ἦχος πλ. α' Ἀντίφωνον αʹ Ἐν τῷ θλίβεσθαί με Δαυϊτικῶς, ᾄδω σοι Σωτήρ μου Ρῦσαί μου τὴν ψυχὴν ἐκ γλώσσης δολίας. ANAVATHMOI Mode pl. 1 st 1 st Antiphon. When I am afflicted, I sing to You, like David, O my Savior. Deliver my soul from a crafty tongue. Τοῖς ἐρημικοῖς ζωὴ μακαρία ἐστί, θεϊκῷ ἔρωτι πτερουμένοις. Blessed is the life of those who dwell in the desert, winged as they are by divine eros. Δόξα... Καὶ νῦν... Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, περικρατεῖται πάντα τὰ ὁρατά τε σὺν τοῖς ἀοράτοις αὐτοκρατὲς γὰρ ὄν, τῆς Τριάδος ἕν ἐστιν ἀψεύστως. Glory... Both now... By the Holy Spirit are all things maintained, both seen and unseen; for, being autocratic, He is one of the Trinity, truly. Ἀντίφωνον β' Εἰς τὰ ὄρη ψυχὴ ἀρθῶμεν δεῦρο ἐκεῖσε, ὅθεν βοήθεια ἥκει. 2 nd Antiphon O my soul, let us rise into the mountains; come, let us go there whence help comes. Δεξιά σου χεὶρ κἀμέ, Χριστὲ ἱπταμένη, σκαιωρίας πάσης περιφυλαξάτω. Let Your soaring right hand protect me, O Christ, from treachery on every side. Δόξα... Καὶ νῦν... Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, θεολογοῦντες φῶμεν Σὺ εἶ Θεός, ζωή, ἔρως, φῶς, νοῦς, σὺ χρηστότης, σὺ βασιλεύεις εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. Glory... Both now To the Holy Spirit we say, theologizing, "You are God, life, eros, light, nous; You are goodness; You reign to the ages." 10

11 Ἀντίφωνον γ' Ἐπὶ τοῖς εἰρηκόσι μοι Εἰς τὰς αὐλὰς προσβῶμεν Κυρίου, χαρᾶς πολλῆς πλησθείς, εὐχὰς ἀναπέμπω. Ἐπὶ οἶκον Δαυΐδ, τὰ φοβερὰ τελεσιουργεῖται πῦρ γὰρ ἐκεῖ φλέγον, ἅπαντα αἰσχρὸν νοῦν. Δόξα... Καὶ νῦν... Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, ζωαρχικὴ ἀξία, ἐξ οὗ πᾶν ζῷον ἐμψυχοῦται, ὡς ἐν Πατρί, ἅμα τε καὶ Λόγῳ. 3 rd Antiphon. Because they said to me, "Let us go to the courts of the Lord," I am filled with great joy, and I send up my petitions. On the house of David are the fearsome things to be fully accomplished; for therein will be fire, burning every shameful thought. Glory... Both now... In the Holy Spirit, as in the Father and the Logos, is the principle of life; from Him is every living being endowed with a soul. When He was at table with them, He took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the scriptures? And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon! Then they told what had happened on the road and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread. 14

Another Mode 3 rd. On this day. Sinners, let us fall before the Lord and Master in prayer, and as once the Publican let us present Him our sighing. He desires that all humanity gain salvation. And to all who are repentant He grants forgiveness. He became a man for our sake, though with the Father without beginning as God. Oekos Brethren, let us all garb ourselves in lowliness, and with laments and sighs strike at our conscience, that at the judgment then, which is in perpetuity, we shall be viewed guiltless, attaining our impunity. For there we have true mitigation; to see it, let us make supplication. For there is pain and sorrow s unseating, gone the deep sighs, there in wondrous Eden, of which Christ was fashioner, He being with the Father without beginning as God. 23

Lord, although the tomb had been sealed by the transgressors of the law, You came forth from the sepulcher, just as You were born from the Theotokos. For both have been sealed to those who would inquire, but the miracles have been revealed to those who faithfully worship the mystery. As we extol it, restore to us exultant joy and Your great mercy. Praise God in His saints, praise Him in the firmament of His power. 31 Αἰνεῖτε αὐτὸν ἐπὶ ταῖς δυναστείαις αὐτοῦ αἰνεῖτε αὐτὸν κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῆς μεγάλωσύνης αὐτοῦ. Lord, the women ran to the sepulcher to see You, the Christ, who had suffered for us. When they came, they found an Angel sitting on the stone that from fear had rolled away. The Angel called out to them, saying, ʺThe Lord has risen. Tell the Disciples that resurrected from the dead is He who saves our souls.ʺ Idiomela from the Triodion. Mode 1 st. Praise Him with the sound of trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre. Brethren, let us not offer prayer as did the Pharisee, for he who exalts himself will be brought to humility. Let us humble ourselves in the presence of God, as did the Publican, and through fasting cry to Him God, be merciful to us sinners. Praise Him with timbrel and dance, praise Him with strings and flute. A Pharisee, by self-esteem dominated, and a Publican, in repentance prostrated, both approached You the only Master. But the one, after boasting, was deprived of the blessings, while the other, not speaking, was counted worthy of Your gifts. Confirm me in such sighs as these, Christ God, since You love humanity. 31
