5 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Spain Bodegas M - O Date & place of tasting shown in italics Growers / Wineries are in alphabetical order with area underneath Bodegas Viña Magaña Navarra Magaña Dignus Tempranillo 50% Merlot 25% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Tasted in Lilley June 2013 The nose is black fruited quite firm and the palate is chewy chunky with some rich flavours. Fresher fruits still black fruit in character show towards the back supported by ripe feeling tannins. Bramble and bilberry give freshness on the finish. Mar de Frades Rais Baixas White Wines Albariño Tasted at the Wines from Spain tasting March 2012 The nose has some nice rich peach and apricot flavours and although the palate starts quite full the mid palate has high acidity slightly green and quite hard on the finish. Albariño Tasted at the Wines from Spain tasting London March 2014 Sweet on the nose the start of the palate is full of white peach and apricot. There is mid acidity fresh limes that give a lighter slight hard feel to the back palate and finish. Albariño Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians June 2016 Citrusy and salty both nose and palate is fresh bright. 6 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Bodeagas de la Marquesa Rioja Valserrano Gran Reserva Tempranillo 90% Graciano 10% Tasted at Rioja 10 x 10 Banking Hall London October 2016 The fruit on the nose is rich and sweet the palate has depth of flavour with the ripe black fruits underpinned by fresher firmer red. Sweet at the back the finish is fresher light and firm. Martin Codax Cambados Rais Baixas White Wines Albariño Tasted at the Mansion House July 2010 The mix of pineapple and grapefruit gives a lovely mix of flavours. There is sweetness of fruit on the start of the palate but the lime and lemon freshness shows towards the back. The balance is excellent and the back palate has an attractive bitter sweet character Albariño Tasted at the Carlton Club September 2011 The nose has the crispness of green limes and this freshness is there on the start of the palate. There is mid sweetness hints of tropical fruits and towards the back the mix of lime, grapefruit and white peach gives a lovely bitter sweet character. Albariño Tasted at the Liberty tasting The Oval January 2016 Light and bright the nose is fresh a lime and lemon mix the start of the palate crisp. There is a hint of sweetness a hint of white peach but the citrus mix dominates and refreshes the back palate. Lias Albariño Tasted at the Liberty tasting The Oval January 2016 The nose is fresh and bright the palate richer with depth of fruit. The sweeter tropical fruits are backed by fresh grapefruit layers of interest. The back palate has green lime acidity slightly salty and fresh with the fruit lingering on the finish. 7 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Tasted at the Carlton Club January 2014 Ripe and sweet fruited the nose has depth of flavour and the fruit on the start of the palate is rich. The citrus that comes through on the mid palate refreshes but greengage and pear richness are there at the back giving depth on the finish. Mara Martín Godello Tasted at the Liberty Wines tasting January 2012 The nose is quite rich with a mix of tropical fruits. The richness on the palate is balanced by apple freshness but towards the back a herbal character tends to overtake the fruit flavours and dominate. Bodegas Martínez Alesanco Badarán Rioja Reserva Tempranillo 90% Garnacha 10% Tasted at Rioja 10 x 10 Banking Hall London October 2016 Fresh red fruits the nose is light the start of the palate bright. The mid palate is firm but it fills out towards the back with ripe red fruits. The tannins are still obvious and tend to hold back the fruit and shorten the finish. Nada Que Ver Maturana Tinta 100% Tasted at Rioja 10 x 10 Banking Hall London October 2016 The nose is fresh the start of the palate bright with a fruit salad of red fruits. Rich cherry, wild strawberry give mid richness and depth but at the back the fresh fruits dominate the finish is light and fragrant. 8 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Lots of ripe bramble and bilberry fleshes out the nose with underneath some fresher cherry and raspberry. The fruit on the palate feels ripe and the tannins are rounded ensuring a supple feel. It has a lovely length with lots of fruit showing towards the finish. La Basseta Garnacha Cariñena Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah Tasted at the Wines from Spain Tasting London March 2008 Cassis is very much in evidence on the nose backed by bramble and some fresher red fruits. The palate is rich, black chocolate rich in the middle and lighter towards the back with a touch of black pepper. La Creu Alta Cariñena Garnacha Cabernet Sauvignon Tasted at the Wines from Spain Tasting London March 2008 The nose has a herbal twist and this vegetal character comes through on the palate. Sweet cleaner black fruits are in evidence towards the finish rather spoilt by the vegetal nature of the nose and the start of the palate. Mas d En Comte Porrera Priorat White Wines Cal Pla Blanco Macabao 40% Garnacha Blanca 30% Moscatel 30% Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting London September 2010 The nose has a lot of very strong flavours with the fruit being underpinned by a green herbal earthiness. The mid palate has mineral freshness but towards the back the herbal grassy character tends to dominate. Blanco Garnacha Blanc 50 % Picapoull Blanc 25% Xarel.lo 25% Tasted at the O W Loeb tasting London September 2010 There is a lot of character on the nose with greengage to the fore backed by some green herbal flavours. 9 SPAIN August 07, 2012 The mix of flavours on both nose and palate give a lovely complexity. Black fruits appear to dominate but behind are some fresher red fruits, cherry and raspberry. The tannins although giving structure are ripe allowing the sweet fruit to show to advantage. Mas Doix Priorat Salanques Garnacha Cariñena Syrah Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 There is a lot of sweet fruit on the nose with the ripe feeling bramble and cassis filling out the mid palate. The chunky richness is balanced by the red cherry that shows through towards the back. Salanques Garnacha 65% Carinena 25% Syrah 10% Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The red fruit gives freshness on the nose brings out the spices. Although the palate starts with red fruited freshness the mid palate has lots of black fruits lovely and rich lots of power and depth of flavour. There is an underlying freshness bilberry and bramble backed by a mix of minerals. Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles Carinena 55% Garnacha 45% Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The nose has a hedgerow mix of flavours bramble some red cherry and mulberry. Sweet ripe fruit fills out the mid palate. The fleshiness is helped by ripe tannins and the mix of fruits lingers on the finish. Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles Carinena 55% Garnacha 45% Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The nose has depth of fruit a complex mix of red and black fruits and the palate has the same mix of flavours. On the mid palate red cherry and mulberry dominate their freshness bringing out the hints of spice and the minerals on the back palate. The finish is long and quite fresh fruited. 10 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Mas Las Mola Priorat Garnacha Carignan Cabernet Sauvignon Tasted at the Carlton Club September 2011 The Llicorella slate soils give an exciting mineral quality to the wine. Powerful black cherry and blackcurrant are very much in evidence on nose and palate with slightly fresher elderberry and bilberry in the middle. The back palate is full of concentred flavours, rich, deep and powerful Mas Martinet Falsets-Gratallops Priorat Martinet Bru Grenache Carignan Syrah Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 There is a lot happening on the nose with the sweet black fruits backed by slightly fresher red. The mid palate has a powerful mix of flavours with the richness of the black fruits underpinned by fresher red cherry and raspberry. The finish is long with lots of complex spicy flavours. Martinet Bru Grenache Carignan Syrah Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Although the nose is quite rich the palate is lighter with more bramble and bilberry. Under the freshness the fruit feels ripe and this mid fleshiness is helped by ripe feeling tannins. The finish is long the freshness giving it a lighter more elegant feel. Martinet Bru Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Concentrated flavours richness depth of fruit the nose has sweet black fruits the palate black cherry richness. There is mid freshness lighter a mix of red fruits but it fills out at the back the fruit ripe the finish has depth and sweetness. Clos Martinet Grenache Carignan Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The fruit is ripe fleshing out the nose and giving a sweet start to the palate. Rich damson plum fills out the mid palate the suppleness helped by rounded tannins. There is enough freshness to balance with the predominant red cherry giving a firmer feel on the finish. 11 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Clos Martinet Grenache Carignan Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 There is an attractive red fruited racy freshness about the nose but the mid palate is more profound with a black fruited power and richness. There is an underlying balancing freshness a mix of red cherry and bilberry and this gives a lighter more elegant feel to the finish. Clos Martinet Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 The nose has fragrance bramble and red fruits the palate though has depth rich ripe fruit supple and velvety in the middle a powerful mix of flavours. Under the power the richness there is a balancing freshness and although lighter at the back the finish has sweet fruited depth. Cami Pesseroles Grenache Carignan Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The power of the black fruits on the nose is balanced by the fresher red on the palate. The freshness on the palate brings out the fragrances towards the back. There are lots of complex layers of fruit and a good length of flavour. Cami Pesseroles Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Rich and ripe on the nose depth of fruit on the palate a mix of black plum, cassis and black cherry. The mid palate has breadth and depth concentred flavours and power but there is balance with freshness at the back the finish lighter the flavours lingering. Escurons Grenache Syrah Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 The red fruited mix and the minerals give a lovely vibrant freshness on the nose. The mid palate is richer deeper more serious with a cassis power the layers of fruit giving complexity. The red fruits that show towards the back bring out an attractive herbal quality. Escurons Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Brooding rich fruit the nose has black fruited depth the palate a powerful mix of flavours. Under the power the richness the depth of fruit bilberry and bramble lighten and refresh. The tannins are still quite firm but at the back rich ripe fruit gives fleshy depth. 12 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Rich and ripe the nose has mix of sweet red and black fruits the palate is fleshy supple in the middle the tannins ripe and rounded. Firmer at the back some black cherry a hint of bramble but it finishes with sweet fruit and depth. Masia Duch Scala Dei Priorat El Tancat Cabernet Sauvignon 80% Garnacha & Merlot 20% Tasted at the Wines from Spain Tasting London March 2008 The nose has a varnish character and this unclean rather dry fruit feel is there on the palate. Dirty and oxidized flavours dominate the finish. Bressol Garnacha 80% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Tasted at the Wines from Spain Tasting London March 2008 This is a good example of old style wine making. The tannins are hard, dry and aggressive and the fruit has a varnish, oxidized character. Mas Perinet La Morera de Montsant Priorat Perinet Cariñena 40% Syrah 20% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Garnacha 10% Merlot 10 % Tasted at the Wines from Spain Tasting London March 2008 Concentrated sweet black fruits flesh out the nose. 13 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Sola Fred Carignan 90% Grenache 10% Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2010 The nose is quite rich with more of a black fruit character. The ripeness of the fruit gives flesh on the mid palate, lots of bramble and black cherry. Towards the back it feels slightly less concentrated with a touch of bilberry freshness. Castell de Les Pinyeres Garnacha Cariñena Cabernet Sauvignon Tasted at the Wines from Spain tasting October 2014 Black fruits the nose is quite firm very black cherry. The palate is sweeter some nice rich flavours lots of cassis mid fleshiness from dark chocolate with at the back a fresher feel more of a bramble character. Bodegas Mauro Tudela de Duero & Toro Mauro Tinto Fino Syrah Tasted at the Wines from Spain Tasting London March 2008 The nose is upfront, the rich mix of bramble and bilberry has a black pepper twist. Lots of fruit fleshes out the palate, the tannins feel ripe ensuring suppleness but towards the back there is some acidity giving a racy elegance. Mauro Tempranillo 90% Syrah 10% Tasted at the winery May 2010 There is an exciting spiciness on the nose with lots of blackberry fruit. The sweetness of the fruit is balanced by freshness but towards the back the richness reappears fleshing out the back palate. Mauro Tempranillo 90% Syrah 10% Tasted in Spain October 2011 The nose has an attractive sweetness with some black fruits behind the red. The palate is full and fleshy the suppleness helped by the silky tannins but towards the back the red cherry and raspberry give a balancing freshness. 14 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Tasted at the winery October 2012 There is a voluptuous richness to the nose and the palate starts with rich ripe black fruits. The sweetness of the fruit is underpinned by freshness some red cherry and mulberry lovely and vibrant. The back palate and finish though are packed with sweet fruit giving suppleness and richness. Mauro Vendimia Seleccionada Tempranillo Tasted at the winery May 2010 The nose is rich packed with ripe fruits, first blackberry and then fleshy strawberry. Fresh red cherry shows on the mid palate but the richness of the black fruits are very much in evidence lending weight to the finish. Mauro Vendimia Seleccionada Tempranillo Tasted in Spain October 2011 The nose is profound black fruit with depth of flavour. The black fruited mix does give a rich start to the palate but behind is red cherry that gives a fresher lighter feel towards the back. The layers of flavour give complexity the richness of the fruit balanced by the structure. Mauro VS Tinto del Pais 100% Tasted at the winery October 2012 The black fruited mix on the nose is rich with deep brooding flavours. At the start of the palate red cherry refreshes and the mineral mix adds to the complexity. Fine tannins give structure but do not hold back the fruit and the finish is long elegant and aromatic Terreus Tempranillo Tasted at the winery May 2010 There is a wonderful complexity on the palate with layers of flavour. The nose has the freshness of red cherry but the palate is fleshed out by black cherry and blackberry all so well balanced. The fruit lingers on the back palate. Terreus Tinto del Pais 100% Tasted at the winery October 2012 The nose is deep brooding with lots of powerful flavours. Damsons, black cherry fill out the mid palate refreshed by bilberry. The tannins are fine and ripe giving mid structure and towards the back minerals and bilberries lighten and give a stylish elegance to the finish. 15 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Toro Tasted at the Tudela winery May 2010 The nose has an exciting earthy mineral quality, all quite rustic. Black fruits dominate, the tannins are firm giving structure and the finish has a lovely peppery spice quality. San Román Tinta de Toro 100% Toro Tasted in Spain October 2011 Although the nose is quite red fruit dominated there depth and power richness of flavour. More black cherry shows on the palate backed by herbs and spices. There is some oak showing on the full bodied creamy mid palate with a succulent mix of fruits fleshing out the finish. San Román Tinto de Toro 100% Toro Tasted at the winery October 2012 The nose is firm lots of black cherry and sloe and although the palate is structured there is lots of fruit underneath black plum and cassis with the richness of liquorice. The intensity of flavour is lightened by bilberry and bramble and the finish has lots of minerals and a hint of spice. Bodegas del Medievo Aldeanueva de Ebro Rioja Monte Araya Rioja Selección Especial Tempranillo Tasted in Lilley July 2012 Sweet red fruits give some richness to the nose and weight at the start of the palate. The mid palate is lighter with fresh raspberry and although towards the back it is sweeter it lacks a bit of character and concentration. 16 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Tasted in Whitwell Hertfordshire October 2013 Black fruits dominate and although there are red fruits at the back it is rich and ripe. The layers of flavour on the palate give complexity ripe tannins help the suppleness fleshy black fruits are backed by slightly fresher red yet the richness of the fruit fills out the back palate. Mocen Rueda White Wines Mocen Rueda Verdejo Tasted in Spain October 2011 There is a mix of flavours on the nose some quite sweet peach and grapefruit backed by fresh limes. Rich fruit fills out the mid palate well balanced by the citric freshness at the back. Molino Loco Yecla Monastrell Tinto Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians November 2014 Vibrant red fruits the nose is fresh the palate bright and herbal. Intermingling with the red fruits Bramble adds complexity the mid palate has slightly more depth hints of sweetness the finish though IS fresh long and spicy. Bodega y Viñedos Monfil Cariñena Garnacha Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2012 The fruit on the nose is fresh a mix of red cherry and bilberry and the palate has layers of flavour freshness yet mid sweetness. Although the tannins are quite firm supporting the black fruit in the middle show their sweetness and there are red fruits at the back refreshing the finish.. Garnacha Tasted at Lincoln s Inn December 2012 The nose has a mix of fruits sweet black plum with fresher red cherry behind. There is a hedgerow mix on the palate black fruits and red fruits all feeling ripe. Rounded tannins and dark Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 16
17 SPAIN August 07, 2012 chocolate give a fleshy sweetness on the mid palate with towards the back a red fruited freshness. Garnacha Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting March 2015 Leafy and fresh the nose has a mix of fragrances the palate full of autumn hedgerow fruits. The mid palate is sweet the richness helped by ripe tannins fleshy but at the back the balancing freshness gives a lighter feel yet there is sweetness coming through giving richness on the finish. Bodegas Moñtanar Castilla-La Mancha White Wines Organic Verdejo Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2016 Apple blossom on the nose the start of the palate is zesty and fresh mid sweetness ripe pears a nice depth of flavour. Lime and apple balance the richness the back plate fresh with bitter almonds on the finish. Bodegas Monteabellón Ribera del Duero Avaniel Joven Tempranillo 100% Tasted at the Ribera del Duero tasting London October 2014 Bright lively red fruited on the nose the start of the palate is quite tight. There is a richer feel in the middle with some fleshy mulberry but at the back cherry stone refreshes and lightens. Roble 5 mesas en Barrica Tempranillo 100% Tasted at the Ribera del Duero tasting London October 2014 The nose is closed the start of the palate firm black cherry and sloe. It fills out a bit in the middle but the tannins are obvious the back palate tight with lots of oak vanilla spice on the finish. Crianza 14 meses en Barrique Tempranillo 100% Tasted at the Ribera del Duero tasting London October 2014 Very firm the nose quite tight the predominant black fruits are backed by fresher red. 18 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Monte Amán Ribera del Arlanza Tempranillo Tasted in Lilley June 2005 It is firm on the nose at the moment and has a leafy cherry stone character with a nice weight of fragrant leafy fruit on the palate. The taste is structured and long with red berried and bilberry flavours showing on the finish. Tempranillo Tasted in Lilley June 2005 The nose is broader and shows a good depth of fruit. Complex flavours show on the palate with a mix of bilberry, wild strawberry and loganberry. The finish is long and definite and has a cherry stone character. Tempranillo Mesas Barrica Tasted in Lilley June 2005 It is very fragrant on the nose with the fruit over powering the hints of vanilla. There is a good depth and weight of sweet fruit on the palate and although mid palate feels firm and structured there is good balance and a smoky depth to the finish. Monte Araya Rioja Rioja Tinto Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2012 Fresh red cherries feature strongly on the nose with sweeter flavours giving some weight on the palate. The tannins are ripe adding to the feeling of suppleness but towards the back there are lots of reds fruits giving a lighter fresher feel to the finish Bodegas Monte Blanco Rueda White Wines Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 18
19 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Verdejo Tasted at the Wines from Spain tasting March 2012 Tasted in Lincoln s Inn October 2012 The nose is quite rich hints of tropical fruits and white peaches. The grapefruit that shows on the palate refreshes and brings out the flavours on the back palate. Verdejo Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2013 Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians November 2013 Peach and apricot give depth of flavour on nose with tangerine gives freshness on the palate. There is more citrus at the back giving a lovely fresh fruity finish. Verdejo Tasted at the Spanish Wine Fair London March 2014 Citrus refreshes the nose but behind are richer flavours some pineapple and pear with the sweetness in the middle balanced by a citrus mix at the back. Verdejo Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2016 The nose is fresh slightly herbal and the start of the palate is citrusy and bright. Richer in the middle ripe pears the sweeter flavours balanced by the lime apple mix on the back palate. Bodegas Monterebro Jumilla White Wines Blanco Sauvignon Blanc 100% Tasted in Lilley May 2013 The nose has a mix of lime and tropical fruits racy and fresh fragrant yet with depth of flavour. The start of the palate is fresh fruited with lots of citrus but it fills out in the middle some white peach then towards the back the freshness dominates with lime, grapefruit and minerals. Blanco Sauvignon Blanc 100% Tasted in Lilley July 2013 The lemon flowers elderflower mix has an underlying herbal mineral freshness and the palate starts with the same raciness. It fills out in the middle white peach hints of tropical fruits the peachy richness balanced by flinty citrus at the back. The mix of flavours lasts well on the finish. Blanco Sauvignon Blanc 100% Tasted in Lilley May 2015 White flowers the nose has floral charm with the freshness of limes and lemons. Bright and crisp on the start of the palate yet there is sweetness under the fresh fruit a pineapple, pear and tropical fruits mix. Rich and sweet fruited on the mid palate a hint of black cherry yet at the back fresher fruits give a lighter feel bringing out hints of black pepper. The palate is the same an attractive bitter sweetness the richer fruit giving depth at the back the finish lighter with peppery spicy red fruits. There is balance an underlying freshness some redcurrants and raspberries the finish fuller with just a hint of sweetness. Joven Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley May 2013 The nose has a hedgerow mix of fruits bramble, some black cherry and rosehips. The start of the palate is fresh with a mix of flavours quite spicy but it fills out towards the back with sweeter flavours. The finish is brambly fresh fruited with a touch of black pepper. The palate is sweet with ripe fruit a lovely mix of flavours lots of interest. The sweetness is well balanced by fresh bilberry a rustic mix with black pepper and spices giving lots of interest on the finish. Crianza Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley July 2013 The nose has the fleshiness sweetness of ripe black plum and the start of the palate is the same rich fruited lots of liquorice and sweetness of flavour. Well handled tannins add to the mid fleshiness sweet and ripe with a good depth of flavour. It feels fresher at the back lighter on the finish with the bramble and elderberry mix lingering on the finish. Crianza Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley January 2016 The nose has an autumn hedgerow mix bright and fresh the palate a mix of blackberry and black cherry. Sweet fruit in the middle the tannins are fine rich and ripe fleshy and supple. At the back there is a mix of fresh black fruits but it fills out on the finish sweeter and richer. Crianza Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley December 2016 The nose has depth the start of the palate intensity a rich mix of black fruits. The mid palate is slightly lighter with autumn hedgerow fruits bramble and rosehips a hint of herbal spice but it fills out at the back with the richness of ripe black fruits, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. The finish has length of flavour. Barrica Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley May 2013 The nose is full of sweet ripe fruit with the black fruits tending to dominate. Bramble and black cherry are underpinned by red fruits redcurrant and red cherry the layers of flavour giving lots of complexity. The tannins are fine the mid palate supple with the freshness that is there at the back bringing out a hint of oak on the finish. Barrica Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley July 2013 The nose is a bit closed at the moment but there is the feel of sweetness and ripe black fruits at the back. Bramble and black cherry dominate the start of the palate slightly herbal with the freshness of redcurrant and bitter cherry on the back palate layers of flavour giving lots of complexity. 24 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley May 2015 The youth shows on the nose a bit firm at the moment and the start of the palate is a bit tight. It fills out in the middle sweet and ripe an attractive mix of black fruits their ripeness giving more flesh at the back. There is a balancing freshness helping to bring out cedar wood spice on the finish. Barrica Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Lilley December 2015 The fruit feels ripe the nose has sweetness. Black cherry is backed by damson plum depth of fruit in the middle. Under the rich fruit the mid suppleness bilberry and bramble give a lighter fresher feel and although bright at the back there is sweetness on the finish. Barrica Monastrell 85% Syrah 15% Tasted in Shillington December 2016 The nose is still quite tight and the start of the palate firm yet there is sweet fruit on the mid palate a mix of ripe black cherry and damsons, the tannins although firm are discreet. The back palate has richness and depth concentrated flavours with a powerful mix of black fruits the finish fresher with hints of oak spice. Selección Syrah 85% Monastrell 15% Tasted in Lilley May 2013 Sweet ripe black fruit give a fleshy richness on the nose and fills out the start of the palate. Under the black cherry and cassis richness bramble refreshes with the layers of black fruited flavours giving interest. The back palate has a mix of red fruited freshness yet black fruited sweetness and the finish has the peppery spiciness of oak. Selección Syrah 85% Monastrell 15% Tasted in Lilley July 2013 Rich ripe black fruit fills out the nose and gives depth of flavour on the start of the palate. Under the cassis richness redcurrant, sloe and bitter cherry refresh with the layers of fruit giving lots of complexity. 25 SPAIN August 07, 2012 The nose has depth the palate starts with rich ripe fruit a supple fleshiness on the mid palate. The tannins though fine are still obvious quite firm but behind the black fruits are sweet and there is depth on the back palate. The finish has a peppery cedar wood spiciness. Sweet in the middle fine tannins a rich mix of flavours the fresh fruits, the peppery cedar wood spice underpinned rich black cherry. Selección Syrah 85% Monastrell 15% Tasted in Lilley December 2016 There is a concentrated mix of black fruits the nose has depth the palate a brooding richness. Firm black cherry is backed by softer fleshier plum the tannins are firm but fine concentrated fruit in the middle. Bramble and bilberry gives a lighter fresh feel at the back the finish has sweetness, a hint of oak spice aromatic and peppery. Monte-Vannos Burgos Ribera del Duero Montevannos Tinto Joven Tempranillo 85% Merlot 15% Tasted in Lilley October 2010 The mix of black and red fruits gives lots of character on the nose. It has depth of flavour on the palate powerful flavours the richness of the black cherry and blackberry balanced by fresher red cherry and mulberry. Sweet fruit fleshes out the back palate. Montevannos Tinto Joven Tempranillo 85% Merlot 15% Tasted in Burgundy October 2010 The nose is full of ripe fruit with more of a crunchy red character showing at the back. The black and red fruits vie for dominance on the on the palate but the fruit is held back by firm slightly aggressive tannins and the alcohol comes through giving an after burn on the finish. The palate has flowery flavour, some complexity and although fresh is not hard. There is good length of fruit on the finish. White Wines Mont Ferrant Tasted in London February 2005 The nose is rich and sweet with greengage and some fresh lime. The palate is full and complex with a good depth of fruit enlivened by the mid acidity. It finishes with sweet fruit. Rosé Wines Mont Ferrant Rosé 88 Tasted in London February 2005 It is very deep in colour and the nose is heavy rather meaty. The palate has lots of raspberry fruit lifted by the mid acidity but the freshness does not last and it lacks length. Mont Marcal Penedès Sparkling Wines Cava Brut Reserva NV 91 Macabeo Xarello Chardonnay Tasted at the Carlton Club February 2015 There is a lot of rich fruit on the nose with pineapple and pear on the palate. Behind the freshness there is the richness of white peach and tropical fruits. The layers of fruit give complexity with the sweeter flavours nicely balanced by the freshness. Blanco 2011 Fermented en Barrique Vuira 90% Malvasia 10% Tasted at the winery October 2012 There is a lot of rich fruit on the nose and the start of the palate lots of ripe greengage. The mid palate is fresher more of an apple character this mix of fruits giving lots of complexity. A hint of oak at the back gives a touch of spice to the fresh fruit finish. Crianza Tempranillo 70% Garnacha 20% Graciano & Mazuelo 10% Tasted in Spain October 2011 Rich ripe black fruits give weight on the nose and flesh on the palate. There are underlying red fruits that balance the richness refresh the middle and bring out the complexity of flavour that come through towards the back. Crianza Tempranillo 70% Graciano Mazuelo Garnacha 15% Tasted at the winery October 2012 There is a lot of rich fruit on the nose ripe black cherry with behind it freshness that brings of the fragrances. Red fruits intermingle with black on the palate the freshness balancing the richer sweeter flavours. The fruit lingers on the finish. Reserva Tempranillo 70% Graciano Mazuelo Garnacha 15% Tasted at the winery October 2012 Rich fruit gives depth on the nose and the palate has richness and power yet suppleness. Black cherry and cassis are underpinned by a mix of mulberry and red cherry giving a slightly lighter fresher feel towards the back but the finish is rich fruited with a lovely depth of flavour. Reserva Tempranillo 70% Garnacha Tinta 20% Graciono 5% Mazuelo 5% Tasted at the Wines from Spain tasting March 2012 The nose has some attractive sweet fruit and the ripeness gives richness on the start of the palate. 28 August 07, 2012 SPAIN Tempranillo 70% Garnacha 20% Graciano & Mazuelo 10% Tasted in Spain October 2011 The nose is serious, deep and profound packed with concentrated black fruits. Blackcurrant vies with black cherry for dominance the richness nicely balanced by some red cherry. The layers of fruit give complexity with the ripe tannins giving suppleness and although the back palate feels quite concentred there is enough underlying freshness to give a lighter feel to the finish. Selección Especial Tempranillo 70% Garnacha 20% Graciano & Mazuelo 10% Tasted in Innholders Hall February 2016 The nose is closed the palate a bit tight concentred black fruits some rich black cherry. Under the black fruits there is red cherry fresher and lighter at the back but it tends to close down on the finish the tannins still quite obvious. There is more fruit to show with time. Prado Enea Gran Reserva Mazuelo Tempranillo Tasted in Bolton Abbey Yorkshire October 2010 It seems quite red fruited on the nose with hints of vanilla and sandalwood. The fruit is sweet the richness well balanced by some freshness and although the nuttiness of maturity is in evidence it is still remarkably fresh. The complex mix of fruits gives lots of interest on the back palate, flavours that linger. Prado Enea Gran Reserva Tempranillo 70% Garnacha 20% Graciano & Mazuelo 10% Tasted in Spain October 2011 Black fruits tend to dominate the nose with the richness of black cherry and sloe backed by slightly sweeter black plum. The mid palate is full of concentrated flavour deep powerful brooding but under all of this there is freshness that lifts the flavours and gives a lighter more elegant feel to the finish. Tasted at the winery October There are a lot of powerful flavours on the nose mainly black fruited in character. The palate is deep serious profound supple in the middle with ripe rounded tannins. Towards the back there is some cherry red that lightens it a bit but the finish has real depth and richness of flavour. Torre Muga Tempranillo 75% Mazuelo 15% Graciano 10% Tasted at the winery October 2012 The fruit on the nose is rich deep black fruited with black cherry, cassis and sloe. The powerful mix of flavours on the palate is held back at the moment by firm but ripe tannin. 29 SPAIN August 07, 2012 Marqués de Murrieta Ygay Logroño Rioja White Wines Capellanía Viura 100% Tasted in Spain October 2011 There is an amazing depth of fruit on the nose lots of apricots and dried oranges the richness backed by freshness. The oak is prominent but not over powering the mix of fennel and rosemary adding to the spiciness. There is a fleshy feel to the mid palate with honeyed roasted fruits then freshness towards the back with a hint of vanilla on the finish. Capellania Viura 100% Tasted qt Rioja 10 x 10 Banking Hall London October 2016 The nose has rich fruit dried orange peel and peach. Depth on the palate ripe fruit greengage and tropical fruits yet there is freshness apple underpinned by a hint of oak and herbal grapefruit, fennel and rosemary the finish is rich and honeyed. Reserva 2004 Finca Ygay Tempranillo 91% Garnacha Tinta 6% Mazuelo 3% Tasted at the Carlton Club March 2011 The classic mix of grapes gives lots of complexity on both nose and palate. Black fruits seem to be to the fore but behind there is freshness a firmer feel. Layers of bramble and black cherry vie with redcurrant and red cherry all adding to the complexity. The finish has the spice of oak. It is a wine for all seasons complimenting lamb, pork and would not be daunted by goose or duck. Reserva Tempranillo 84% Garnacha 13% Mazuelo 3% Tasted in Spain October 2011 There is a lot of red fruit giving freshness on the nose but as the fruit feels ripe there is a fleshier feel on the palate. Raspberry and cherry are very much to the fore backed by some richer black cherry but the oak does tend to come through slightly drying the finish. Tasted in Haro October There is a bitter herbal feel to the red fruits on the nose. The palate is light very fresh with slightly green leafy flavours. Dark chocolate enriches the start of the palate the fleshiness helped by silky tannins. The black fruit mix has power depth and concentration and there is a lovely savoury edge to the finish. Dalmau Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon Graciano Tasted at the Wines from Spain tasting October 2014 The nose is strongly blackcurrant but behind is a red cherry freshness. The fruit on the palate is sweet and ripe lots of rich flavours the black fruits fleshed out by dark chocolate and cocoa. Smooth tannins aid the silky suppleness the rich fruit filling out the back palate the finish has an exciting savoury quality. Dalmau Tempranillo 70% Graciano 15% Other 15% Tasted at Rioja 10 x 10 Banking Hall London October 2016 The nose has rich black fruits the start of the palate is sweet with ripe fleshy black plum and black cherry. Mid freshness hints of red fruits but the back palate has sweet fruit chocolate richness with depth of fruit on the finish. Gran Reserva Especial Tempranillo 93% Mazuelo 7% Tasted in Spain October 2011 It is rich and savoury with a powerful mix of black fruits. There is a fresher feel on the palate giving a lighter character in the middle a slight hollow but the black fruit power returns enriching the back palate. The touch of dryness coming from the oak on the finish slightly lets it down.
