2 Carnival o the Microbes (201) ritten or Thomas A. lomster and the Colorado Chamber Orchestra. Secial thanks to Dr. Naomi Ward, microbiologist, and Dr. Harvey Hix, oet or their research and careul exlanations. Each movement o Carnival o the Microbes uses a deining characteristic o a articular tiny creature to create a musical rule. In Verrucomicrobial ectosymbiont, a small bacterium riding on the outside o a larger microbe unctions as a eaon-like deense system, shooting out a haroon 15 times its length to destroy redators. Musically, this is a long, ascending line ending ith a violent-sounding ercussion instrument, the lion s roar, hich, microbially seaking at least, unctuates the enemy organism and literally sills its guts. In the second movement, Noctiluca scintillans, the organisms eat diatoms (microscoic sea creatures) and hotosynthesize to glo in the dark. They are beautiul and sarkly, esecially hen stirred u. In my musical interretation, the sarkles are made by metallic ercussion instruments that are more active the more stirred u the music. The unusual division method o Corynebacterium glutamicum, a microbe commonly ound in dirt, is the insiration or this movement. It gros in small clusters and instead o dividing in hal hen ready, these microbes sna o scientists have even made recordings o the snaing sounds and video o the vibrations. So in my musical interretation, the strings use a technique called tremolo, hich is a series o quick back and orth bo strokes. Various member o the ensemble sna izzicato and make ercussive snaing noises. Euloiscium ishelonii is insired by the huge shae and size o the microbe, as ell as its method o reroduction. This microbe is large enough to see ith the human eye and shaed like a long cigar. I traced the shae on a iano keyboard u on hite keys, don on black to create the main theme. These microbes have an unusual method o reroduction in that they ill themselves ith miniature versions, oen u, and birth them. In beteen ull keyboard runs (the mothershi themes) you ill hear the birth o diminutive miniature themes across the orchestra. Instrumentation: lute clarinet 1 ercussion * iano violin I violin II viola cello contrabass -Anne M.
