[55] In his Funeral Oration for the Athenian dead, Lysias imagines the scene at the Battle of Salamis. The sea was full of corpses, there was clashing of many wrecks of friends and enemies vessels, and for a long time the battle was evenly balanced; they seemed at one moment to have conquered and been saved, at another to have been defeated and destroyed. 5 10 Lysias 2.39 41 (adapted) Names ἡ Ἀσία, -ας Words ἡ ἱκετεία, -ας ἡ θυσία, -ας ἡ ἀνάμνησις, -εως ὁ ἔλεος, -ου ὁ πόθος, -ου ὁ οἶκτος, -ου το μέγεθος, -ους διαφέρω + gen ἐκλείπω ἀντιτάσσω Asia supplication, prayer sacrifice reminder pity, compassion longing, yearning pity, compassion magnitude, greatness surpass abandon, desert set against Turn over

4 Section B Answer either Question 2 or Question 3. 2 Read the following passage and answer the questions. Herodotus describes how Indians harvest gold from the anthills of giant ants, as big as foxes. The sand that they dig out is full of gold and the Indians set out to gather it. They harness three camels each, males on either side and a female in the middle, who has been taken away from a very young calf. 5 10 Based on Herodotus, Histories, 3.104 5 Names οἱ Ἰνδοὶ, -ων the Indians Words ἡ ζεῦξις, -εως λελογισμένως τό καῦμα, -ατος θερμός, -ή, -όν ἡ ἁρπαγή, -ης ὁ μύρμηξ, -ηκος ἀφανής, -ές τό θυλάκιον, -ου ἡ ψάμμος, -ου ἡ ὀσμή, -ης ἡ ταχυτής, -ῆτος ὁ ἄρσην, ἄρσενος ὁ/ἡ κάμελος, -ου ἡ θήλεια, -ας ἐφέλκομαι ἀναμιμνήσκομαι τό μαλακόν, -οῦ harnessing according to calculation burning heat hot stealing, theft ant unseen, invisible little bag sand smell speed male camel female lag remember here: weakness
