1. OVERVIEW Intended Use Slings are designed to be used with a patient lit for transfer of a person from one place to another. Transfer must be performed by a qualified operator as described in this manual. Do NOT use the sling for any other purpose. Disposable slings are intended for single patient short term use. Lifetime may vary from 1 day to several weeks as long as the sling is not soiled nor showing signs of degradation. Product Life Regular washable fabric slings are designed for a useful life of 5 years from the manufacturing date specified on the sling label. After that time, they must be replaced. Note that this life span is dependent on the proper care and use of the sling. 5 WARNING Savaria Concord Lifts, Inc. cannot ensure complete safety for a sling that has exceeded its useful life. Wear may cause damage to the sling and lead to a patient fall. Using This Manual To ensure safe use of the sling, read this entire manual carefully, especially the Safety Instructions, before using the sling. Failure to comply with all WARNINGS in this manual may result in injury. If there is anything you don t understand, contact your Authorized Savaria Dealer for further details. Keep this manual with the sling and ensure all operators are fully trained in the use of this accessory as described in this manual.

6 2. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Keep these Safety Instructions with the sling at all times. Read this entire manual before using the sling. WARNING Do NOT use the sling for any purpose other than to transfer a person. To ensure safety of the person being transferred and the operator, follow all Safety Instructions. To Ensure Safety Ensure the sling is designed for use with the lift being used. Ensure the sling is the correct size for the person being transferred (refer to the chart on page 9). Ensure the sling is not damaged in any way. Ensure the sling straps are in good condition and are attached properly to the lift. Operators must be fully trained before attaching and using a sling. Always visually inspect the sling before use. Clean the sling as described in this manual.

7 3. DESCRIPTION The following chart illustrates the different types of slings. Note that each model is offered in various sizes, and comes in mesh or solid material. Universal without head support Universal with adjustable head support Hygienic Walking Disposable Repositioning

8 NOTE We recommend that you replace the sling 5 years after the manufacturing date specified on the sling label. Guidelines to Select Proper Sling Size Size Extra Small (XS) Small (S) Medium (M) Large (L) Extra Large (XL) Extra Extra Large (XXL) Bariatric (BARI) Weight < 75 lb 75 to 125 lb 125 to 250 lb 250 to 350 lb 350 to 450 lb 450 to 600 lb 1200 lb Some slings may incorporate a colored liner in addition to the size label. The color code is as follows: XS: White S: Red M: Yellow L: Green XL: Blue XXL: Orange

4. USING THE SLING Before Use Perform the following visual inspection before every use of the sling: Check the sling material and sling straps for wear. Check for any defects or loose threads in the stitched areas of the sling. You need to unfold the sling straps before attaching them to the support hooks of the patient lift. Note that there are different loops on the sling straps (as shown below) to allow transfer from the sitting or reclined position. To transfer to/from the fully seated position (shown below), use the black loops at the back and the grey loops at the front. To transfer to/from the fully reclined position (shown below), use the grey loops at the back and the black loops at the front. Note: The green middle loops are used for intermediate positions. Figure 2 9 Grey loop Green loop Black loop Fully seated position Fully reclined position

10 Universal Sling The universal sling is offered with or without the adjustable head support feature. To adjust the head support, tighten the straps as needed for full support and release them for less support as shown below. The universal sling is also available in a disposable version for single patient short term use. Figure 3 Straps tightened (full support) Straps released

The photos below show the two methods that can be used for the leg loops of the universal sling (regular or crossed). Figure 4 11 Leg loops regular position Leg loops crossed position WARNING Disposable slings must not be laundered. A soiled or laundered disposable sling must not be used and must be disposed of.

12 Hygienic Sling Install the hygienic sling on the chest near the underarm to maximize comfort and stability during transfer (see the photo below). The second photo below illustrates the position for transfer using the hygienic sling. Figure 5 Installing the hygienic sling Position for transfer using hygienic sling

Walking Sling Install the walking sling on the chest near the underarm to maximize comfort and stability during transfer (see the photos below). The bottom photo below illustrates the position for transfer using the walking sling. Figure 6 Installing the walking sling 1 2 3 13 4 5 6 Position for transfer using walking sling

14 Lifting the Patient 1 Attach the sling straps to the sling support hooks on the patient lift you are using. Ensure the safety latch of the support hook is completely closed. 2 Before lifting the person, ensure the sling straps are securely locked in the support hooks and the person is comfortable. Make sure the sling is not caught on any obstruction. 3 Lift the patient according to the instructions provided with the lift you are using. When lifting, ensure the sling is clear of any obstacles before moving the patient, and guide the patient s legs past any obstacles. 4 When the patient is above the desired point of transfer, lower the patient according to the instructions provided with the lift you are using. 5 Once the patient is transferred to their final position, loosen the sling straps and disengage the sling from the lift. 6 Slide the lift away from the person and remove the sling from the patient. Repositioning Sling This type of sling is intended to raise a patient above the bed in order to change the sheets, or to turn and reposition a patient in the bed. 1 Lay the sling in the center of the bed underneath the patient. 2 Use the lateral strap to turn the patient so they are lying on their side. 3 Use the straps on either side of the sling to either sit the patient up or raise their legs. WARNING When using a repositioning sling, there is a risk of the patient rolling over or sliding out the sling, which may lead to a patient fall. It is recommended that the bed side rails be in place to prevent the patient from falling out of the bed.

5. CLEANING THE SLING Clean the sling according to the symbols on the label (see below). Wash at a temperature up to the one indicated on the label, do not iron, do not use bleach and do not tumble dry; air drying is recommended. Wash normally at a temperature up to the one indicated on the label. Washing at a higher temperature may affect and reduce the mechanical resistance of the sling. Cold or lukewarm water washing is recommended. 15 Do not iron as it may affect and reduce the mechanical resistance of the sling. Do not use a bleach agent. Bleach may affect and reduce the mechanical resistance of the sling. Do not tumble dry the sling. Tumble drying may cause excessive twist, tear and wear of the sling that may affect and reduce the mechanical resistance of the sling. Air drying is recommended. Do not wash. Washing may affect and reduce the mechanical resistance of the sling.
