Green Light Incandescent Light Bulbs: Endangered Species? Team N.T.A.M.A. 4 th High School of Chania, Crete, Greece Νikoleta Mavredaki, Triantafillia Psaroudaki, Alkisti Kapnisaki, Marina Choustoulaki, Anna-Maria Papasifaki Methods cont. Results cont. Introduction Conclusion Overview and Importance: Eighty per cent of bulbs in all homes are inefficient, energy consuming "incandescent" bulbs, even though for more than 30 years now there are energy efficient bulbs (Greenpeace). The Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and recently the Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs are two examples of energy saving light sources. In particular, LEDs should have supplanted all other types of energy efficient light bulbs as they use much less power (watts) per unit of light they generate (lumens). LEDs are not only cost-effective but also environmentally safe; they do not contain heavy metals, and have the lowest Carbon Footprint. The use of LEDs reduces the greenhouse gas emissions from power plants alongside lowering electric bills (Brite Gate, 2011). Although evidence of LED s efficiency and safety is very strong, people are resistant to change their household lighting. The U.S. government has decided to enforce the elimination of the traditional incandescent bulbs since January 2012. Even then and two years later data suggests that the degree of change is disapprovingly low (USA TODAY, 2014). It seems very important that governments and local authorities run campaigns to increase public awareness of the advantages of using LED and convince people to change their old energy consuming bulbs. Objective: Our goal was threefold: 1) to make comparative calculations of traditional and energyefficient light bulbs, 2) to examine local people s attitudes, and 3) to raise public awareness. Methods Figure 1. Apparatus used to make comparative calculations of temperature, electric current and spectral radiance Then, we developed and run a public survey (n=114) in Chania, Crete to identify local people s knowledge, use and prejudice towards energy efficient light bulbs. (See Respondents Demographic profile in Fig 4 and their responses Fig 5-12). Results Based on the current measurements and the specifications of each bulb, we calculated the cost of using the 4 types of light bulbs. For our study, we assumed we needed to light a room for 50000 hours of continuous use. We calculated how many of each light bulb we will need for this period and their total cost. We measured the intensity of the current flow with each light bulb and estimated the energy spent within these 50000 hours and the cost of this electricity in Greece. By adding up the purchase price and the electricity costs, we calculated the total cost and thus we estimated the financial benefit of the energy efficient bulbs, in particular fluorescent and LED ones. We recorded the spectral content of each light source and we noticed that incandescent bulbs emit HIGHER INFRA RED (IR) radiation which makes objects heat up. The temperature of filament bulbs reaches 70 o C (Fig 3), considerably higher than the other light bulbs, denoting the significant amount of energy lost as heat. Temperature ( o C) Figure 3. Temperature of four types of light bulbs after 5min of operation Type of Bulb Figure 4. Respondents Demographic profile Due to the plethora of drawbacks, filament and halogen bulbs should be replaced by energy efficient and state of the art light bulbs. People are still hesitant to switch to energy efficient light bulbs and they are in need of more information. We measured quantities of electrical current flow, the temperature and the spectrum of four types of light bulbs of equal luminous efficacy (700 lumen): a filament, a halogen, a fluorescent and a LED one. We used the apparatus shown (Fig 1) which consists of the fiber-optic probe, placed 20 cm away from each light source to detect the emission spectrum of each light bulb. We connected the apparatus to an ampere meter and measured the intensity of the current in the circuit needed to light up each light bulb. To check the temperature we placed a temperature probe 3cm away from the light bulb, and measured the temperature after 5 minutes of continuous usage.
