March 12, 2007 Visit of high school students (age 15-16 years old) in the laboratories of the medical school of the University of Patras on Monday March 12th, 10.00-13.30. Organized by staff members and graduate students of the Physiology and the Anatomy departments of the medical school. The purpose of the visit was to give an insight to the students on how brain research has advanced our knowledge on who we are. The visit includes a short seminar on the basics of how our brain works and four practicals: 1. How is our brain? Observation of brain sections in the anatomy lab. 2. Why do we use animals in our research? Observation of rats and mice and discussion on the topic. 3. How do we perceive the world around us? Learn about our senses through animation in the computer's lab. 4. How do we record brain function? Observe an EEG recording in the Neurophysiology lab and learn about it.

Α.5. March 14, 2007 Neuroscience and Psychoanalysis This activity took place in Athens at the Eugenidis Foundation. It included two talks and discussion with the general public. Freud as Neuroscientist Dr. Fotini Stylianopoulou, Professor of Biology at the University of Athens. Sub- consciousness: Neuroscience meets Psychoanalysis Dr. Elias Kouvelas Professor Emeritus at the University of Patras.
Discussion moderator was George Zarkadis, Reporter of the Journal Focus. Α.6. March 16, 2007 100 years of research on Alzheimer s disease: Knowledge of today Therapies of the future. A short report on recent advances in neurobiology, epidemiology and therapeutics of Alzheimer;s disease.this activity took place in the center of Athens -Auditorium of Stoa tou Vivliou - under the auspices of the Association of Alumni of Arsakeia and Tositsia Schools. It included three talks delivered by Dr. Andreas Fortos, Psychiatrist, director of the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry, Psychiatric Hospital of Attica, Dr. Spiros Efthimiopoulos, Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Biology,University of Athens and Dr. Ilia Theotoka,Neuropsychologist, Dept. of Psychiatry University of Athens.,Eginition Hospital. Α.8. March 17, 2007 Communication with the general public and delivery of brain and neuroscience related material from an exhibition booth placed in the center of Patras. Several members of the Hellenic Society for Neurosciences and pupils from the Experimental High School of the University of Patras were there all afternoon. They addressed questions of the general public and promoted the activities that took place on the 18 th of March in the cities of Patras and Nafpactos (see below) Α.9. March 18, 2007 Functions of the brain This activity took place at the University of Patras by the Experimental High School of the University of Patras (directed by Fotis Dimitropoulos). It includesd presentations by pupils on various subjects concerning the brain. The subjects were chosen by the pupils from a list suggested by the teachers (Plakouda Aikaterini, MSc - member of Hellenic Society for Neurosciences, Hatziantoniou Panagiotis, Dr, Xanthopoulos Nikolaos, Dr and Nikoletopoulos Nikolaos, Dr ) in collaboration with Marigoula Margariti (Lecturer at the Department of Biology in the University of Patras). The pupils of thesecond and third grade of the high school of the city Antirrion were invited and attended. They were accompanied by their teachers and parents.
