About the music Originally a piece for brass ensemble, Action Brass brings the excitement of a modern orchestral film score to concert band. The composition opens with a one measure "action motif" that dominates the piece. Ascending woodwind runs mixed with heroic brass fanfares break up the action as well as softer, more tense sections. Another round of the action motif with ascending diminished scales culminates in a loud, unsettling chord (think spaceship crash landing) and ends the first section of the piece. Continuing on, low brass bell-tones set the foundation for a somber trumpet solo. The woodwinds pick up the melody next and a solo flute soars above them with a counter-melody. The following "B" section crescendos into a full band statement of this evil theme, as if a supervillain from a "James Bond" film is monologuing his diabolical plan to take over the world. An accelerando leads us into a triumphant brass fanfare with woodwind flourishes, and then the tempo drastically takes off into a triplet ostinato figure played by low brass and woodwinds. The French horns and trombones introduce a new melody which is then passed on to the trumpets with a change of key. A standard heroic bvi-bvii-i chord progression precedes one final round of the action motif, and the piece ends in a glorious finale! About the composer - Brian Sadler, originally born in Bethesda, MD, graduated from Pocono Mountain High School in Swiftwater, PA in 2001. Brian is currently a trombone player in the US Navy stationed at the SEVENTH Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan. After graduating high school, Brian enlisted in the US Navy for five years as a musician. Upon completing boot camp at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL, he continued to the Armed Forces School of Music in Virgina Beach, VA. Normally a six-month course, Brian excelled out after only one month of classes. His first tour of duty was at the CINC South Band in Naples, Italy, a multi-cultural group consisting of military bandsmen from US, Italian, Greek, and British forces. During his three-year tour in Europe, Brian traveled and performed with the band not only throughout Italy, but in Germany, England, Spain, Tunisia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Croatia, and Greece. Returning to the US in 2004, Brian's next duty station was with Navy Band Northwest in Silverdale, WA. After completing two years of traveling throughout the northwestern United States, and with his enlistment up, he decided it was time to begin his music degree. Arizona State University, with its drier climate and renowned music program seemed a good place to start. After 2 1/2 productive years at ASU, and with the decline of the economy, Brian decided to return to the Navy. After successfully re-auditioning and losing more than 40 lbs. (0 lbs. total), Brian reenlisted in April of 2009. He is currently stationed at the th Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan and plays in the jazz band, dixieland band, and brass quintet. Brian also writes and arranges music for all of those ensembles. While on a trip to Brunei, Brian met his wife, Mary, and they now live happily together in Japan. Brian has written music for a variety of independent and student films and continues to build his filmography. His concert music is also very well received. Brian placed 2nd in the 2008 Humboldt State University Brass Chamber Music Workshop Composition Contest, is the winner of the 2008-2009 Dallas Wind Symphony Brass Fanfare Competition, and won the "Excellence in Composition Award" by the 2008 International Brass Music Festival. Additionally, he has placed 2nd twice in the Music in the US Armed Forces Composition Contest.
