decorum (latin) dignified propriety of behavior, speech, dress, etc. the quality or state of being decorous, or exhibiting such dignified propriety; orderliness; regularity. Vitruvius's concept of decorum = fitting architectural solutions to the requirements of function and type. Decorum refers to the suitability of a design. In the past, designers had to articulate the significance of a building, defined in terms of use, social status, and physical location. Architectural decorum insisted that a design should agree with its purpose and be appropriately adapted to its audience, namely other buildings and the public at large. The beginnings of modernism, however, saw its decline, and it soon all but disappeared from design theory. Nevertheless, aspects of the idea have persisted in continuing debates regarding the social and representational dimension of the built environment.
decorum
ornament - something that decorates or adorns; an embellishment - anything that enhances the appearance of a person or thing early 13c., "an accessory," from Old French ornement "ornament, decoration," and directly from Latin ornamentum "apparatus, equipment, trappings; embellishment, decoration" from ornare "equip, adorn" (see ornate). Meaning "decoration, embellishment" in English is attested from late 14c. decoration -the act, process, technique, or art of decorating. - an addition that renders something more attractive or ornate; adornment early 15c., "action of decorating, beautification," from Late Latin decorationem (nominative decoratio), noun of action from past participle stem of decorare (see decorate). Meaning "that which decorates" is from 1670s. As "a badge or medal worn as a mark of honor," it is attested from 1816 (often in plural, decorations).
