Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 Sunday - May 20, 2018 Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council Sts. Constantine and Helen the Equal-to-the-Apostles Commemorated on May 21st The Church calls St Constantine (306-337) the Equal of the Apostles, and historians call him the Great. He was the son o the Caesar Constantius Chlorus (305-306), who governed the lands of Gaul and Britain. His mother was St Helen, a Christian of humble birth. At this time the immense Roman Empire was divided into Western and Eastern halves, governed by two independent emperors and their corulers called Caesars. Constantius Chlorus was Caesar in the Western Roman Empire. St Constantine was born in 274, possibly at Nish in Serbia. In 294, Constantius divorced Helen in order to further his political ambition by marrying a woman of noble rank. After he became emperor, Constantine showed his mother great honor and respect, granting her the imperial title Augusta. Constantine, the future ruler of all the whole Roman Empire, was raised to respect Christianity. His father did not persecute Christians in the lands he governed. This was at a time when Christians were persecuted throughout the Roman Empire by the emperors Diocletian (284-305) and his corulers Maximian Galerius (305-311) in the East, and the emperor Maximian Hercules (284-305) in the West. After the death of Constantius Chlorus in 306, Constantine was acclaimed by the army at York as emperor of Gaul and Britain. The first act of the new emperor was to grant the freedom to practice Christianity in the lands subject to him. The pagan Maximian Galerius in the East and the fierce tyrant Maxentius in the West hated Constantine and they plotted to overthrow and kill him, but Constantine bested them in a series of battles, defeating his opponents with the help of God. He prayed to God to give him a sign which would inspire his army to fight valiantly, and the Lord showed him a radiant Sign of the Cross in the heavens with the inscription In this Sign, conquer. The vision of St. Constantine of the Precious Cross of Christ, and his victory in battle [The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Epistle Ἀπόστολος Fathers of the 1st Council Acts of the Apostles 20:16-18, 28-36 Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Daniel 3.26,27 Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done. The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 20:16-18, 28-36 IN THOSE DAYS, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesos, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletos he sent to Ephesos and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.' " And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 2

Gospel Εὐαγγελίου Fathers of the 1st Council The Gospel According to John 17:1-13 At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since ou have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. "I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves." A host of Angels descended upon your tomb, and those guarding it fell down mortified; and in the tomb stood Mary, bewildered and searching for your undefiled Body. You bounded up Hades, never been hurt by him; you met with the Virgin, and granted life to her. O Lord who rose from the dead, glory to you. GIVING ONLINE: ENJOY THE CONVENIENCE OF ELECTRONIC GIVING!!! The Annunciation Church reminds you that we offer electronic giving as a way to automate your weekly offerings. Electronic giving provides much needed donation consistency. You may give towards Stewardship, Sunday Candles and Tray, Christmas and Easter Offerings, Epitaphios Offerings and much more. Additional information is available from the church office or by a accessing our church website: www.annunciationcleveland.net Click on EasyTithe THE SPIRIT OF STEWARDSHIP As the father has sent Me, so I send you. John 20:21 According to the Bible, Stewards manage their gifts for Our Lord s work. When we support our Church, we give back to God His rightful portion. Is Stewardship merely a token donation? Or is your Stewardship pledge a meaningful response to Christ? Christian Stewardship is Orthodox! It is not just giving our time or our talents or our treasures. It is, rather, all three! Stewardship is koinonia fellowship sharing together in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Stewardship is also martyria witnessing. Christian Stewardship is all three elements -time, talent, and treasure. It s our gift as Christ instructed, as caretaker and defender of His Church with all of our energy and ability. LIFE HAPPENS IN COMMUNITY! Thank you to all our faithful stewards for you support of our Annunciation Stewardship Program! 6

The Stewardship Committee would like to thank everyone who submitted their pledge cards for 2018. Listed below are the pledged cards we have received. It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the newborn child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayer, God will grant the child necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their name day in our monthly bulletin. If by chance we accidentally miss someone s name day, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating their Name day and beseech out heavenly Father to grant them many years.
