SANDAKAN MATESHIP TREK 2011 On 8 April, I set out for the experience of a lifetime to Borneo, an island off the coast of Malaysia, with eleven other students from New South Wales and three Federal politicians. The purpose of the nine-day voyage was to promote friendship between people of different cultures as they experienced the devastating death march of world War Two. This is the Sandakan Mateship Trek 2011. The Sandakan Death March is what we aimed to accomplish in the nine days. In World War Two, 2 400 soldiers were captured by the Japanese forces and taken as prisoners of war. Of this 2 400, more than half were Australian. They were forced to walk over two hundred kilometers in a series of three marches from Sandakan to Ranau in treacherous conditions with the constant fear of death haunting them. The water and food was sparse, diseases and casualties were plenty. By the Japanese surrender on 15 August 1945, only six POWs were able to escape and survive. The rest were shot, bayoneted or stricken by disease. It was one of the largest atrocities in military history. Now it was our turn to experience what the soldiers felt physically and emotionally. On 11 April we began the five-day trek covering ninety kilometers and reaching the same destination, Ranau. The days were long; we walked for at least 8 hours per day, with over 100% humidity and the sizzling sun over our heads. The unmarked path through the jungle was challenging as we walked through slippery mud, leech-ridden rivers, cut through branches, all with the help of our trustworthy guides. By the third day we were all feeling the pain. Not just our own pain, but also the pain of the POWs. We all represented a POW during the journey, mine being Corporal Ronald Eugene Sullivan who was just 27 years old when he met his awful fate. Walking in the footsteps of the soldiers made the whole experience real and added an unimaginable sense of newfound respect. We completed the whole trek on that Friday all with a sense of pride towards each other and ourselves. The entire group did not walk the trek individually; we all did it as one. In times of need we supported each other and offered help to anyone struggling. We stuck together as we created many memories. We truly became not just friends, but a family. By the end of the journey I had discovered things I never knew about myself before. I became stronger and more independent by facing challenges and hardships I wouldn t have dreamt of experiencing, had I not been given this formative experience. It made me appreciate my life and lifestyle and to never take anything for granted. I proved to myself that there are no limits as I can achieve anything I want. LEST WE FORGET
2011 ST EUPHEMIA COLLEGE SWIMMING CARNIVAL This year was one of the most exciting swimming carnivals we have attended to date! Not only because it s the first school sporting event of 2011 but we were very proud to be house captains of our almighty team Apollo. All the students were highly motivated in competing or cheering for their peers. We were extremely satisfied and happy with the effort students had put into their outfits, in support of their house teams. Apollo had organized a Hawaiian theme and had many people go out of their way to buy blow-up palm trees, beach balls, streamers, posters and many other items that made the Apollo team stand out. The results of the day were as follows: Athena in fourth place on 141 points, followed by Aphrodite on 170 points. Second was Zeus on 190 points and taking first place was Apollo on 195 points. We believe we were one of the loudest teams with the oldest and most unforgettable song I m Blue which is Apollo s theme song. Unfortunately, Aphrodite won the chanting and we congratulate them for keeping their team with rhythm and sound. Good work Stephanie Hantes and Miljan Ruzic.! Overall it was a good day and an unforgettable experience for all of Year 12, as it was the last one. Looking forward to our next event. Peter Kalaitzoglou and Chrisovalando Oskis
SWISSA, AICES, CIS AND ALL SCHOOLS SWIMMING The annual SWISSA Swimming Carnival for 2011 was hosted on 14 March at the Blacktown Aquatic Centre. From this event, a selection of St Euphemia students performed exceptionally well and as a result went on to represent the SWISSA region in the AICES Swimming Carnival on 23 March 2011 at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre at Homebush. These students were: BOYS: Tom Kopsaris, Matthew Anaxagorou, Giorgio Tzortzis, Leo Bitas, Evan Kohilas GIRLS: Panoria Georgiou, Marie Malekkou, Constance Hionis, Georgia Hatzi Mr Verghios attended the AICES swimmimg competition with the above students and was extremely proud of how well each and every one of them performed against the best swimmers from the AICES region. A special mention must go out to Leo Bitas who was selected to represent the AICES swimming team in the NSW Combined Independent School (CIS) competition which was held on the on 29 April 2011. Leo finished 2 nd in both the 50 and 100 metre freestyle events and despite losing his goggles during the 50 metre event, he was able to accomplish a personal best time. Both his 2 nd place results mean that Leo will now compete in the State All Schools competition. A truly fantastic result Leo and best of luck for the All Schools competition. Mr Verghios and Ms Edhouse would also like to thank the following students who assisted during the above events: Foti Maropoulos, Andrew Christodoulou, Maree Psomas and Patrina Kambitsis. Mr Verghios
