Bearing symbols The complete bearing designation is composed of prefix symbols, base symbols and suffix symbols. Prefix symbols generally indicate special configurations. Rust-proof materials are indicated with the abbreviation for stainless steel for instance. The base symbol relays information regarding the bearing series (first two digits) and the bore diameter (last two digits). From code digit 04, the dimension of the bore diameter is five times the value of the bore diameter code digit, for example 6208 indicates that the bore diameter is d = 40 mm. Exceptions are indicated by a forward slash in front of the code digit. Cage configurations, shields and seals, etc. are encoded in the suffix symbols. Tolerances of deep groove ball bearings It goes without saying that all deep groove ball bearings indicated in this brochure are in conformity with the valid ISO-standards as well as the standards DIN 625 and DIN 620 (with the exception of 620-6). We have made every effort to ensure that all data have been compiled and checked thoroughly, however, we accept no responsibility for any errors or incompleteness. The dimensions and tolerances are specified in the respective standards, e.g. DIN 620, DIN 625 or ISO 15. They describe the shape and the running precisions. The tolerance class P0 indicates the standard tolerance values; P6 or P5, etc. are higher precision classes according to DIN 620. Load capacity and service life The fatigue life can be calculated by means of a formula which incorporates the dynamic load rating, the bearing load and the operating speed. In the advanced method according to ISO 281, the failure probability as well as the influences of material and lubricant are also taken into account by means of the factors a1, a2 and a3. A lifte-expectancy of 90 % is usually estimated. Permissible static load The static load is used to determine the design of the bearing with low speeds or slewing movements. S 0 = C or / P or max The static carrying safety S 0 should be calculated by means of the following criteria: operation condition S 0 high running precision required >2 standard requirements 1 low requirements > 0.5 Lubrication Deep groove ball bearings sealed on both sides feature lifetime lubrication and are therefore maintenance-free. In this connection it should also be noted that the grease life of the respective lubricant will reduce the service life of the bearing in certain cases. The standard greases used are lithium soap greases with a mineral oil base and a service temperature range between -25 and +120 C. It can be necessary, depending on the operating conditions, to use a special grease or even to reconvert to the maintenance operation. For the high temperatures which kiln truck bearings have to stand, paste-like lubricants such as molybdenum disulphide for example, must be used as a total loss lubrication. Additionally, the forming of a lubricating film is conditional on a minimum relative speed and can be estimated using the empirical formula n*dm > 10.000. The mean bearing diameter dm is determined from 0.5 * (d+d) Heavy bearing loads require lubricants with EP-additives which possess optimum friction reducing properties. 16

Materials The standard material used for rings and balls is the chromium steel with the designation GCr15. The following percents by weight are permissible for the most important steel components: GCr 15 C 0.95...1.10% Mn 0.50% Si 0.15... 0.35% P < 0.025% S < 0.025% Cr 1.30... 1.60% This material is designed to withstand an application temperature range of -20 C up to +120 C and is therefore adapted to the respective RS-seal material NBR. Fits and bearing clearance Bearing clearance radial clearance = axial clearance = The radial clearance is reduced with the installation of a press fit. Differences in termperature between the inner ring and outer ring as well as the loads on the bearing also influence the effective bearing clearance. In principle, a minimum operating clearance is requested with regard to minimum operating noise possible. It must be taken into consideration, however, that high thrust loads as well as inclined positions can be compensated better with bigger clearance. The press fit between shaft and inner ring is channelled into the recess of the inner ring, thus reducing the bearing clearance. When fit via the outer ring, the pinching amounts to approx. 60 % - 90 % of the overlap (values depending on the aspect ratios). The operation of deep groove ball bearings under preload (= negative clearance) can considerably reduce the service life and lead to premature failure.
