Tr ibolog ical Behav ior of Natural Teeth of D ifferen t Ages ZH EN G J ing, SHA W ei, ZHOU Zhong2rong (K ey L aboratory f or A d vanced T echnology of M aterials of M inistry of E d ucation, S ou thw est J iaotong U niversity, Cheng d u 610031, Ch ina) Abstract: A recip rocal sliding friction and w ear tester w as perfo rm ed to investigate and compare the friction and w ear behavio rs of natu ral teeth of differen t ages sliding again st titan ium alloy under the lub rication of ar2 tificial saliva. T he m icro structu res and w o rn su rface mo rpho logies of the tested teeth w ere ob served w ith an op tical m icro scope and co2focu s laser scann ing electron m icro scope. It w as found that the friction and w ear behavio rs of the natu ral teeth of differen t ages w ere strongly dependen t on the age, w h ich w as related to the differen t m icro structu res of the teeth at differen t ages. N am ely, the early2stage perm anen t teeth show ed sim 2 ilar friction and w ear behavio rs as the m edium 2stage perm anen t teeth, and the m edium 2stage perm anen t teeth had the best w ear2resistance among the teeth of differen t ages. T h is w as becau se the m edium 2stage perm a2 nen t teeth had the mo st compact and strong m icro structu re, w h ich con tribu ted to p reven ting them from se2 vere scuffing and ab rasion in a long run. Con trary to the above, the p rim ary teeth and later2stage perm anen t teeth had relatively fragile and w eak m icro structu res, therefo re they show ed relatively poo rer w ear2resistance than the ea rly2stage and m ed ium 2stage p erm anen t teeth, ow ing to the liab ility to be scuffed and ab raded. T h is accoun ted fo r the mo re severe scuffing and ab rasion sign s on the w o rn su rface of the p rim ary teeth and later2stage perm anen t teeth as compared to that of the early2stage and m edium 2stage perm anen t teeth as w ell.
