Alexandris, K., Kouthouris, Ch., Funk, D., & Giovani, Ch. «Examining the Relationships among Leisure constraints, Involvement and Attitudinal Loyalty among Winter Sport Tourists: the Case of Recreational Skiing» (Submitted in Tourism Management, 20-12-2006) Keywords: leisure constraints, skiing involvement, attitudinal loyalty
Abstract Previous studies provided evidence for the value of the involvement construct in understanding consumer behavior issues in recreation and tourism contexts. This study aimed to test the influence of leisure constraints in the development of skiing loyalty. This relationship has not been previously empirically tested. More specifically, the study aimed to: a) Identify the main constraints that limit recreational skiers participation, using as a framework the hierarchical model of leisure constraints (Jackson et al., 1993); b) examine the influence of leisure constraints and skiing involvement and on skiers attitudinal loyalty; c) investigate the influence of constraints on the development of skiing involvement. Two hundred and sixty eight (N=268) recreational skiers participated in the study. The data were collected in a skiing resort, located in North Greece. A principal component analysis of the constraint scale revealed five dimensions: skiing experience, psychological constraints, time, financial / accessibility, lack of partners. The results provided support for the interactions among the three constructs. The centrality and attraction dimensions of involvement significantly predicted skiing loyalty. Furthermore, the psychological constraints significantly influenced both skiing loyalty and the involvement dimensions (attraction, centrality and selfexpression). The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.
Alexandris, K., Kouthouris, Ch., & Meligdis, A. «Increasing Customers Loyalty in a Skiing Resort: The Contribution of Place Attachment and Service Quality» International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management (In Press, Vol 18 (5), 21 July 2006)
Abstract. Increasing customer loyalty is one of the main challenges facing recreation managers today. Place attachment and service quality are two of the constructs that have been shown to be promising one in predicting loyalty in recreation settings. This study aimed: a) to propose a model for measuring service quality in a skiing resort, b) investigate the contribution of place attachment on the prediction of customers loyalty, and c) examine the influence of service quality on the development of place attachment. Two hundred and sixty four (N=264) recreational skiers participated in the study, and filled the two-dimensional place attachment questionnaire (Kyle et. al., 2004a) and a service quality questionnaire, which was based on Brady and Cronin s (2001) three-dimensional service quality model (physical environment quality, interaction quality, outcome quality). The results of the study indicated that skiers loyalty was significantly predicted by both the place attachment dimensions (place identity and place dependence). Furthermore, place attachment was significantly predicted by the interaction and physical environment service quality dimensions. The managerial implications of these results are discussed.
Kouthouris, Ch., and Alexandris, Κ. (2005). Can Service Quality Predict Customer Satisfaction and Behavioral Intentions in the Tourism Industry? An Application of the SERVQUAL Model in an Outdoors Setting. Journal of Sports Tourism, 4: 12-22.
Abstract This paper aimed to investigate the applicability of the SERVQUAL model in predicting customer satisfaction and customer behavioral intentions in one of the segments of the sport tourism industry, named outdoors. Two hundred and eighty seven (N=287) individuals took part in the study. These individuals participated in an outdoor program that took place in the lake Plasteera, Greece, and included activities such as lake canoe /kayak, orienteering, and archery. Service quality was measured by the SERVQUAL scale, satisfaction was measured by Oliver (1980) scale, and behavioral intentions were measured by Ajzen and Fishbein (1977) scale. Two sets of data were collected; the first one before customers participation in the programs in order to measure their quality expectations, and the second one after customers participation in the program, in order to measure their quality perceptions. The gap scores were calculated, and these scores were used in order to predict customer satisfaction and behavioral intentions. The results of the study did not provide support of the applicability of SERVQUAL in outdoor services. The five dimensions of the SERVQUAL model predicted very low amount of variances in both the satisfaction and behavioral intentions variables. These results indicate the need for further research on the factors that determine customer satisfaction in outdoor settings
Kouthouris, Ch. (2005). Investigating Demographic and Attitude Characteristics of Recreational Skiers: An Application of Behavioral Segmentation, The Sport Journal, United States Sports Academy, 8 (4).
Abstract. Behavioral factors were investigated in a real outdoor setting, in order to explain one s intention and actual behavior of participating in outdoor recreational programs. This paper used an extended model of the Theory of Planned Behavior, with the addition of the self-identity variable, aiming to predict intention to participate and then actual participation in a specific outdoor recreation program including activities like: lake canoe/kayaking, orienteering, and archery. Three hundred and twenty-nine adult individuals participated in the study. Manifold correlations existed between all the variables of the study. The results also indicated that perceived behavioral control, role identity, and attitudes toward participation significantly predicted individuals intention to participate in the specific outdoor recreation program (R =.597; p <.001). Furthermore, intention toward participation was a significant predictor of the actual behavior (R =.390; p <.001). These findings are discussed with reference to academic literature, the improvement of outdoor activity programs by emphasizing the need of suiting customers needs and the practical implications for recreation programs provision.
Grouios, G., Kouthouris, Ch., and Bagiatis, K. (1993). The effect of Physical Practice, Mental Practice, and Video Demonstration Practice on the Learning of skiing skills International Journal of Physical Education, 30, (3), 25-28, & (4), 31-32.
Abstract. The purpose of the this study was to investigate the effects of Mental Practice and Video Demonstration Practice, along with physical practice (PP) and no-practice (NP), on the learning of skiing skills. It was hypothesized that MP and VDP would facilitate the learning of skiing skills by allowing the learner skier to make cognitive approximations to correct pattern of movement. Forty volunteer physical education students were recruited from a population of novice skiers. The subjects were randomly assigned to four experimental groups, (n=10 per group). All the experimental groups were measured on the dependent variable (skiing skills) prior to administration of the treatment conditions (PP, MP, VDP and NP). After the final session all the groups were measures on the dependent variable once again. The greatest difference between the preand post- treatment mean performance scores was observed on the PP group, then on the Mental Practice group and next on the Video Demonstration group. Results supported that both imagery and observation play an important cognitive role in mediating skiing motor behavior.
Theodorakis, Y., Goudas, M., & Kouthouris, Ch. (1992). Change of attitudes toward skiing after participation in a skiing course. Perceptual and Motor Skills, 75: 272-274.
Abstract. To examine whether student s choice of a wk. module is in accordance with their attitudes and whether their attitudes change after participation in the course, 50 physical education students who selected skiing as an option responded to a scale measuring their attitudes toward skiing before and after the course. 34 students who did not select skiing served as a comparison. Analysis showed that students who spent 50 hours in the course held more positive attitudes toward skiing, indicating that attitudes influenced their choice. This implies that their participation in and knowledge about skiing contributed to the alteration of their attitudes.
Alexandris, Κ,. Kouthouris Ch., & Girgolas, G. Investigating the Relationships among Motivation, Negotiation and Intention to Continuing Participation: A Study in Recreational Alpine Skiing. Journal of Leisure Research. (In press)
Abstract This study aimed to investigate the negotiation strategies used by recreational skiers to overcome constraints influences, and to test the degree to which negotiation acts as a mediator of the relationship between motivation and intention to continue participation. Two hundred and twenty (N=220) recreational skiers who visited a ski resort in Greece participated in the study, and completed the intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions of the Sport Motivation Scale (Pelletier et al., 1995) and a fifteen-item negotiation scale. Five negotiation dimensions were revealed by an exploratory factor analysis: improve skiing knowledge, adjust lifestyle, acquire information regarding resorts, time management, and find partners. The results indicated that: a) both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation had statistical significant associations with intention to continue skiing, b) the time management and improve skiing knowledge dimensions offered significant contributions to the prediction of intention, c) the negotiation dimensions partially (not fully) mediated the relationship between intrinsic motivation and intention, while there was no mediation on the relationship between extrinsic motivation and intention. These results provide support for the negotiation proposition, developed by Jackson et al. (1993), and further explain the relationships among motivation, negotiation, and an individual s leisure behavior.
