SUMMARY At this point we finish our journey through the history of one of the most important orders of the catholic church, during the middle ages and in more recent times, as well as the monastic institutions maintained by the order on the island of Santorini. The question that arises is: what is the contribution of our thesis to research and to the order s history, in Greece in general, and more specifically in Santorini. The answer to the above question is to be found in the eight chapters of this thesis, and for its compilation we have made use of extant bibliography in the greek as well as in other languages and a great amount of previously unpublished material from the archives of the catholic bishopric of Thera (AKES) and the archives of the Dargentas family, founder and proprietor of the Skaros monastery. The first chapters of this thesis are introductory and introduce us to the inner workings of the domenican family, in order to better comprehend the establishment and the journey through time of the monastic institutions, founded by the domenican order at Skaros, Emporio and Fira, where apart from the nunnery there used to exist also a male cenobiotic convent, during the second half of the 19 th century. The first of the three chapters concerns the founding, the operation and structure of the order since the first centuries of its existence as well as the life of its founder, Saint Domenic The second chapter deals mainly with the presence of domenicans in European universities during the 13 th century but also with one of the more sinister practices of the order, the Holy Inquisition. In this chapter we begin by presenting the activity of the domenicans in big civic centers, their presence in medieval universities and their contribution to the introduction to the curriculum of the works of Aristoteles and the study of his teachings. Then we concern ourselves with the part played by the order in the organization and operation of the Holy Inquisition. We present the reasons which necessitated the creation of the Holy Inquisition and we analyse in detail its role in the entrenchment and protection of the official dogma of the Catholic Church. Alongside all this we project the reasons behind the papal decision to entrust the organising of this institution (the Holy Inquisition) at first to the mendicant orders of the Domenicans and the Franciscans and then solely to the Domenicans. The Holy Inquisition may have constituted a dark page in the history of the order but on the other hand its contribution to rescuing the spirit of classical Greece and the introduction of the ancient greek texts to the European universities was one of its greatest achievements. From this order have originated the most terrible and hateful persecutors of any deviation in theological behavior but also some of the more enlightened minds of their time, like Albert the great, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Erckhart, Beato Angelico and others. Through the work of these men we have the manifestation of another, luminous side of the order, which should not be forgotten. The last of the three introductory chapters deals with the history of the monasteries as well as the local history of the order throughout the greek territory. Relying mainly on secondary sources but also on material from archives of the area, we present the operating and activities of the order s monasteries which were established and still existed by the end of the 17 th century. All three chapters are based on material from secondary bibliography but also on unpublished material from the archives of the local Catholic Bishoprics (Naxos, Syros) registering the activities of domenicans. These three chapters present a short but concise history of the order in Greece and greek territory and they could be vi
published independently and cover a gap in greek language bibliography, because up to now there exists no such comprehensive study on the history of the order. The following chapters of our thesis deal exclusively with the presence and activities of monks and nuns of the order in Santorini, a small, arid island of the Cyclades, which has played host through the centuries to three female convents (nunneries) and one male cenobiotic convent. In the fourth chapter we present the history of the convent of the Domenican Sisters of St Catherine, first in Skaros (1595/6-1811) and in Fira (1811-end of 19 th century). A general historic outline of the time of the foundation of the convent is presented in this chapter. The 16 th century was an era of important political and theological and ecclesiastical trans- formations. This outline covers the political changes taking place in this specific area, the Cyclades, changes such as the termination and dismantling of frangokratia (occupation by western/european powers) in the area and its inclusion in the Ottoman Empire. After the presentation of the political changes we also present the changes that took place around this time in the Catholic Church after the occurence of the reformation. We comprehensively describe the changes both in the Catholic Church worldwide and in the local Catholic Church in Santorini. We also present the way the reforming work of the Catholic Church on the island was received, after the arrival of a reformer bishop and the establishment of a new convent. About this convent until now there has been just the occasional publishing of information about its history, in works concerning the history of the Catholic Church in Santorini (eg Catholics of Santorini by I. Delendas, Athens 1949) as well as some short articles in local newspapers and collections of writings (eg articles by I. Delendas in Katholiki and pieces in the Danezis tomes titled Santorini). These articles neither covered the whole history of the covnvent or examine the relations between the convent and the proprietor family of Dargentas. We present for the first time the history and operation of the convent using material from the archives of the Catholic Bishopric of Thera as well as from the Dargentas family archives, this family being the proprietor of the convent. The establishment of the convent is described through the use of unknown material of the proprietor family but also information derived from secondary bibliography where we spot, comment upon and reject existing inaccuracies by using when possible archivial material. We have divided the history of the Skaros convent into three periods, and based on material from the Dargenta archives and the Catholic Church archives, we shed light on unknown aspects of its existence throughout its history. The fifth chapter of out thesis concerns itself with the sisterhood of the convent. In this chapter we begin by presenting statistics concerning the sisterhood from the establishment of the convent until the present day. Then we present the tradition of patrimonio (dowry) of the nuns. It was introduced to church life based on canonical law and the edicts of the Synod of Trident. We present the ways in which the patrimonio was given to priests and nuns and we accentuate the differences between the two. Then we proceed to portray the candidate nuns/ novices based on the relevant documents (patrimonia) we have discovered in the archives of the Catholic Bishopric of Thera filed under various categories (dowries, wills, testaments, endowments). These documents are the fruit of long and intensive research in the files of the wills and testaments, the dowries and endowments in the archives of the Catholic Bishopric of Thera in order to complete the picture of the sisterhood of the convent. Our next subject in this chapter is the way of life of the nuns within the walls of the convent. In order to recreate it as realistically as possible we studied the reports of apostolic visitors (inspectors) who were sent periodically by the Vatican to vii
Santorini. Also the accounts of local bishops, where are described the way of life and the privations and rules that governed the lives of the nuns. Then we present the biographical details for 96 nuns from unpublished material from the archives of the Catholic Bishopric of Thera. Apart from the information we obtained from the documents of the Bishopric we also present information about the domenican nuns from the genealogical tree published by C. Hopf as well as genealogical trees of other families. For these nuns we have also found evidence from the births and baptisms registry of the Catholic Church of Thera. Thus we present the history of the convent alongside the personal histories of the nuns living in the convent. The nuns are presented in chronological rather than alphabetical order, on the basis of the date of the patrimonio or other document we drew our information from. The sixth is the last chapter that concerns the Skaros convent and is dedicated and deals exclusively with a nun who was exceptional during her life but also after death. This nun was sister Rosa d Antrichio who was mother superior/ abbess of the convent for many years. We compose her life story based on an unpublished biography written many years after her death by a priest, Gaspar Delenda, in 1823, when exhumed, her body was found intact and Rosa d Antrichio came very close to being sainted, but in the end this was not approved by Rome. She was the daughter of a noble French corsair who traveled on the maltese galleys and took part in the assault against the Emporeio castle of Santorini in 1678. During this attack was probably destroyed the small domenican monastery existing in this castle since 1602 or 1603. Despite the fact that her father was responsible for the destruction of that small convent, Rosa d Antrichio found shelter, love and affection in the domenican convent of Skaros, where she was taken at a very tender age, after the sudden and violent death of her father, in order to save her from the avenging Turks. The Skaros convent was for her a second home, or rather her only home, where she found love, devotion and acceptance and achieved greatness, thus making amends for the destruction of the little domenican convent of Emporeio, destroyed by her father. In the seventh chapter of our thesis we deal with the history of the Emporeio convent. First we write about the geography of the place and then we describe the establishment of the Emporeio castle and its history as property of the Dargenta family. Then we describe how the Emporeio monastery was founded and operated, based on unpublished documents from the archives of the Catholic Bishopric of Thera. We run through the whole history of the convent, from its founding in 1602-1603 till its destruction in 1678. In this chapter we also follow the history of the convent s buildings after its destruction and its transformation into a church till the end of the 18 th century. The course of the Emporeio convent through history is one of the most important contributions of our thesis to historic research and bibliography because until now very little has been written about the existence and operation of this convent. The eighth and last chapter of our thesis deals exclusively with the history of the third monastic institution of the domenicans on the island. This was the domenican convent of cenobites, established on Santorini alongside the domenican nunnery. First we present the unsuccessful efforts of the domenican fahers to found a monastery in the 15 th century and we attempt to explain the reasons for their failure and then we turn to the eventual establishment of the male cenobiotic convent in the second half of the 19 th century. Based on secondary bibliography which we use as original historic sources because the archive of the convent is not accessible to history researchers. We pose questions and highlight the reasons for which the nuns habitually turned for help on various viii
matters to the male convent of the order. Among the subjects raised by the nuns was their persistent request for the placement of a domenican priest in the convent. Along with this request the nuns also demanded something unheard of: the placing of the convent under the jurisdiction of the order or at least the placing of the convent under the jurisdiction of one of the existing monastic regions. And the question that arises is why would the nuns of the convent demand a new status quo after years of parochial administration under the local bishop? We provide the answer to this question by highlighting the straightened economic circumstances of the convent, unpaid loans, the advanced age of the nuns in the convent during this period and two further reasons which, though obvious, we are the first to point out. It concerns the insecurity of the nuns resulting from their translocation from Skaros to Fira and the replacement of the Jesuits who had undertaken their spiritual guidance by French Lazarists. And when the newcoming monks, for who the supervision of the nuns was not an official duty, invited the Sisters of Mercy to Santorini, the insecurity of the domenican nuns, in our opinion, grew. For the first time another women s order would be coming to the island, and this order with its wide educational and charitable contribution might deprive the older convent of new callings as well as donations. In our opinion these were the reasons that led the nuns to the embrace of their paternal order. Apart from the questions we raise and the observations we make, in this chapter we set right for the first time the division of opinion between various sources and put things in perspective so that the contribution and activity of the domenican fathers who served the convent as pastors can be appreciated. Based on existing sources we divide the operation of the male convent in two periods. During the first period (1856-1923) the convent is under the aegis of the order and the supervision of the monastic region of Piedemont. During the second period (1926-1951) there is discord whether the convent should be dependent on the order or the monastic region, thus the presence and activity of the fathers is limited to those strictly necessary and with special duties. During the last years because a domenican father is rarely present, the pastoral service of the convent is once more entrusted to the local priest, the late Don Nikolaos Kokkalakis, who fulfils his duties conscientiously until his death in 2010. Thus our thesis in both its first and second part brings something new to research of the history of the order as well as the ecclesiastical history of Santorini. On the one hand it presents the founding of the order and its activities in various institutions of the Catholic Church such as the pastoral guidance of civic populations, the medieval universities and the Holy Inquisition and on the other hand it presents the historic course and advancement of the domenicans in areas of greek interests (Constantinople, Asia Minor, Kaffas, Trebisond, Cyprus) as well as on a small island of the Cyclades, Santorini. Santorini, the epicenter of our research activity is also for the order a place of intense missionary activity because for centuries the domenican family maintained there four monasteries which have been known to the historic research but not in the depth and width that our thesis has achieved in many levels. ix
