1 1 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (B) or 4PentecostB 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13 Psalm 20 Ezekiel 17:22-24 Psalm 92:1-4, Corinthians 5:6-10, (11-13), Mark 4: Samuel 15:34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah. 35 Samuel never saw Saul again before he died, but he grieved over Saul. However, the LORD regretted making Saul king over Israel. 16:1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long are you going to grieve over Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and get going. I'm sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have found my next king among his sons." 2 "How can I do that?" Samuel asked. "When Saul hears of it he'll kill me!" "Take a heifer with you," the LORD replied, "and say, 'I have come to make a sacrifice to the LORD.' 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will make clear to you what you should do. You will anoint for me the person I point out to you." 4 Samuel did what the LORD instructed. When he came to Bethlehem, the city elders came to meet him. They were shaking with fear. "Do you come in peace?" they asked. 5 "Yes," Samuel answered. "I've come to make a sacrifice to the LORD. Now make yourselves holy, then come with me to the sacrifice." Samuel made Jesse and his sons holy and invited them to the sacrifice as well. 6 When they arrived, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, that must be the LORD's anointed right in front. 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Have no regard for his appearance or stature, because I haven't selected him. God doesn't look at things like humans do. Humans see only what is visible to the eyes, but the LORD sees into the heart." 8 Next Jesse called for Abinadab, who presented himself to Samuel, but he said, "The LORD hasn't chosen this one either." 9 So Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, "No, the LORD hasn't chosen this one." 10 Jesse presented seven of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD hasn't picked any of these." 11 Then Samuel asked Jesse, "Is that all of your boys?" "There is still the youngest one," Jesse answered, "but he's out keeping the sheep." "Send for him," Samuel told Jesse, "because we can't proceed until he gets here." 12 So Jesse sent and brought him in. He was reddish brown, had beautiful eyes, and was good-looking. The LORD said, "That's the one. Go anoint him." 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him right there in front of his brothers. The LORD's spirit came over David from that point forward. Then Samuel left and went to Ramah. 1 Samuel 15:34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. 35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed is before him." 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and get him, for we

2 2 will not sit down till he comes here." 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. 1 Samuel 15:34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. 35 Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons." 2 Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me." Samuel then set out and went to Ramah. 1 Samuel 15:34 καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Σαµουηλ εἰς Αρµαθαιµ καὶ Σαουλ ἀνέβη εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ εἰς Γαβαα 35 καὶ οὐ προσέθετο Σαµουηλ ἔτι ἰδεῖν τὸν Σαουλ ἕως ἡµέρας θανάτου αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐπένθει Σαµουηλ ἐπὶ Σαουλ καὶ κύριος µετεµελήθη ὅτι ἐβασίλευσεν τὸν Σαουλ ἐπὶ Ισραηλ 16:1 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαµουηλ ἕως πότε σὺ πενθεῖς ἐπὶ Σαουλ κἀγὼ ἐξουδένωκα αὐτὸν µὴ βασιλεύειν ἐπὶ Ισραηλ πλῆσον τὸ κέρας σου ἐλαίου καὶ δεῦρο ἀποστείλω σε πρὸς Ιεσσαι ἕως εἰς Βηθλεεµ ὅτι ἑόρακα ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ ἐµοὶ βασιλεύειν 2 καὶ εἶπεν Σαµουηλ πῶς πορευθῶ καὶ ἀκούσεται Σαουλ καὶ ἀποκτενεῖ µε καὶ εἶπεν κύριος δάµαλιν βοῶν λαβὲ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου καὶ ἐρεῖς θῦσαι τῷ κυρίῳ ἥκω 3 καὶ καλέσεις τὸν Ιεσσαι εἰς τὴν θυσίαν καὶ γνωριῶ σοι ἃ ποιήσεις καὶ χρίσεις ὃν ἐὰν εἴπω πρὸς σέ 4 καὶ ἐποίησεν Σαµουηλ πάντα ἃ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ κύριος καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθλεεµ καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τῆς πόλεως τῇ ἀπαντήσει αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν εἰρήνη ἡ εἴσοδός σου ὁ βλέπων 5 καὶ εἶπεν εἰρήνη θῦσαι τῷ κυρίῳ ἥκω ἁγιάσθητε καὶ εὐφράνθητε µετ ἐµοῦ σήµερον καὶ ἡγίασεν τὸν Ιεσσαι καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν θυσίαν 6 καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ αὐτοὺς εἰσιέναι καὶ εἶδεν τὸν Ελιαβ καὶ εἶπεν ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐνώπιον κυρίου χριστὸς αὐτοῦ 7 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαµουηλ µὴ ἐπιβλέψῃς ἐπὶ τὴν ὄψιν αὐτοῦ µηδὲ εἰς τὴν ἕξιν µεγέθους αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐξουδένωκα αὐτόν ὅτι οὐχ ὡς ἐµβλέψεται ἄνθρωπος ὄψεται ὁ θεός ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ὄψεται εἰς πρόσωπον ὁ δὲ θεὸς ὄψεται εἰς καρδίαν 8 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ιεσσαι τὸν Αµιναδαβ καὶ παρῆλθεν κατὰ πρόσωπον Σαµουηλ καὶ εἶπεν οὐδὲ τοῦτον ἐξελέξατο κύριος 9 καὶ παρήγαγεν Ιεσσαι τὸν Σαµα καὶ εἶπεν καὶ ἐν τούτῳ οὐκ ἐξελέξατο κύριος 10 καὶ παρήγαγεν Ιεσσαι τοὺς ἑπτὰ υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιον Σαµουηλ καὶ εἶπεν Σαµουηλ οὐκ ἐξελέξατο κύριος ἐν τούτοις 11 καὶ εἶπεν Σαµουηλ πρὸς Ιεσσαι ἐκλελοίπασιν τὰ παιδάρια καὶ εἶπεν ἔτι ὁ µικρὸς ἰδοὺ ποιµαίνει ἐν τῷ ποιµνίῳ καὶ εἶπεν Σαµουηλ πρὸς Ιεσσαι ἀπόστειλον καὶ λαβὲ αὐτόν ὅτι οὐ µὴ κατακλιθῶµεν ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν αὐτόν 12 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτόν καὶ οὗτος πυρράκης µετὰ κάλλους ὀφθαλµῶν καὶ ἀγαθὸς ὁράσει κυρίῳ καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαµουηλ ἀνάστα καὶ χρῖσον τὸν αυιδ ὅτι οὗτος ἀγαθός ἐστιν

Let the name of Jacob's God protect you. 2 Let God send help to you from the sanctuary and support you from Zion. 3 Let God recall your many grain offerings; let him savor your entirely burned offerings. Selah 4 Let God grant what is in your heart and fulfill all your plans. 5 Then we will rejoice that you've been helped. We will fly our flags in the name of our God. Let the LORD fulfill all your requests! 6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed one; God answers his anointed one from his heavenly sanctuary, answering with mighty acts of salvation achieved by his strong hand. 7 Some people trust in chariots, others in horses; but we praise the LORD's name. 8 They will collapse and fall, but we will stand up straight and strong. 9 LORD, save the king! 5 5 Ezekiel 17:22 The LORD God proclaims: I myself will take one of the top branches from the tall cedar. I will pluck a tender shoot from its crown, and I myself will plant it on a very high and lofty mountain. 23 On Israel's mountainous highlands I will plant it, and it will send out branches and bear fruit. It will grow into a mighty cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it and find shelter in the shade of its boughs. 24 Then all the trees in the countryside will know that I, the LORD, bring down the tall tree and raise up the lowly tree, and make the green tree wither and the dry tree bloom. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it. Ezekiel 17:22 Thus says the Lord GOD: "I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest. 24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the LORD; I bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree flourish. I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it." Ezekiel 17:22 Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, Most High; 2 to proclaim your loyal love in the morning, your faithfulness at nighttime 3 with the ten-stringed harp, with the melody of the lyre 4 because you've made me happy, LORD, by your acts. I sing with joy because of your handiwork. 5 How awesome are your works, LORD! Your thoughts are so deep! 6 Ignorant people don't know-- fools don't understand this: 7 though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers seem to blossom, they do so only to be destroyed forever. 8 But you, LORD, are exalted forever! 9 Look at your enemies, LORD! Look at how your enemies die, how all evildoers are scattered abroad! 10 But you've made me as strong as a wild ox. I'm soaked in precious ointment. 11 My eyes have seen my enemies' defeat; my ears have heard the downfall of my evil foes. 12 The righteous will spring up like a palm tree. 8 8 2 Corinthians 5:6 So we are always confident, because we know that while we are living in the body, we are away from our home with the Lord. 7 We live by faith and not by sight. 8 We are confident, and we would prefer to leave the body and to be at home with the Lord. 9 So our goal is to be acceptable to him, whether we are at home or away from home. 10 We all must appear before Christ in court so that each person can be paid back for the things that were done while in the body, whether they were good or bad. 11 So we try to persuade people, since we know what it means to fear the Lord. We are well known by God, and I hope that in your heart we are well known by you as well. 12 We aren't trying to commend ourselves to you again. Instead, we are giving you an opportunity to be proud of us so that you could answer those who take pride in superficial appearance, and not in what is in the heart. 13 If we are crazy, it's for God's sake. If we are rational, it's for your sake. 14 The love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: one died for the sake of all; therefore, all died. 15 He died for the sake of all so that those who are alive should live not for themselves but for the one who died for them and was raised. 16 So then, from this point on we won't recognize people by human standards. Even though we used to know Christ by human standards, that isn't how we know him now. 17 So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived! 2 Corinthians 5:6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. What parable can I use to explain it? 31 Consider a mustard seed. When scattered on the ground, it's the smallest of all the seeds on the earth; 32 but when it's planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all vegetable plants.
