1 1 Fifteenth Sunday of Pentecost (C) (or) Twenty Second Sunday Ordinary (C) Jeremiah 2:4-13 Psalm 81:1, (or) Sirach 10:12-18 and Proverbs 25:6-7 or Psalm 112 Hebrews 13:1-8, Luke 14:1, 7-14 Jeremiah 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel. 5 Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless? 6 They did not say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?' 7 And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in, you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who handle the law did not know me; the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit. 9 "Therefore I still contend with you, declares the LORD, and with your children's children I will contend. 10 For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, "Where is the LORD?" Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit. 9 Therefore once more I accuse you, says the LORD, and I accuse your children's children. 10 Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? Jeremiah 2:4 ἀκούσατε λόγον κυρίου οἶκος Ιακωβ καὶ πᾶσα πατριὰ οἴκου Ισραηλ 5 τάδε λέγει κύριος τί εὕροσαν οἱ πατέρες ὑµῶν ἐν ἐµοὶ πληµµέληµα ὅτι ἀπέστησαν µακρὰν ἀπ ἐµοῦ καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω τῶν µαταίων καὶ ἐµαταιώθησαν 6 καὶ οὐκ εἶπαν ποῦ ἐστιν κύριος ὁ ἀναγαγὼν ἡµᾶς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὁ καθοδηγήσας ἡµᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐρήµῳ ἐν γῇ ἀπείρῳ καὶ ἀβάτῳ ἐν γῇ ἀνύδρῳ καὶ ἀκάρπῳ ἐν γῇ ἐν ᾗ οὐ διώδευσεν ἐν αὐτῇ οὐθὲν καὶ οὐ κατῴκησεν ἐκεῖ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου 7 καὶ εἰσήγαγον ὑµᾶς εἰς τὸν Κάρµηλον τοῦ φαγεῖν ὑµᾶς τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἀγαθὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰσήλθατε καὶ ἐµιάνατε τὴν γῆν µου καὶ τὴν κληρονοµίαν µου ἔθεσθε εἰς βδέλυγµα 8 οἱ ἱερεῖς οὐκ εἶπαν ποῦ ἐστιν κύριος καὶ οἱ ἀντεχόµενοι τοῦ νόµου οὐκ ἠπίσταντό µε καὶ οἱ ποιµένες ἠσέβουν εἰς ἐµέ καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἐπροφήτευον τῇ Βααλ καὶ ὀπίσω ἀνωφελοῦς ἐπορεύθησαν 9 διὰ τοῦτο ἔτι κριθήσοµαι πρὸς ὑµᾶς λέγει κύριος καὶ πρὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν υἱῶν ὑµῶν κριθήσοµαι 10 διότι διέλθετε εἰς νήσους Χεττιιµ καὶ ἴδετε καὶ εἰς Κηδαρ ἀποστείλατε καὶ νοήσατε σφόδρα καὶ ἴδετε εἰ γέγονεν

Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments! 2 His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. 5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. 7 He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. 9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. 10 The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish! 6 6 Hebrews 13:1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." 6 So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?" 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. 10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:1 Ἡ φιλαδελφία µενέτω. 2 τῆς φιλοξενίας µὴ ἐπιλανθάνεσθε, διὰ ταύτης γὰρ ἔλαθόν τινες ξενίσαντες ἀγγέλους. 3 µιµνῄσκεσθε τῶν δεσµίων ὡς συνδεδεµένοι, τῶν κακουχουµένων ὡς καὶ αὐτοὶ ὄντες ἐν σώµατι. 4 Τίµιος ὁ γάµος ἐν πᾶσιν καὶ ἡ κοίτη ἀµίαντος, πόρνους γὰρ καὶ µοιχοὺς κρινεῖ ὁ θεός. 5 Ἀφιλάργυρος ὁ τρόπος, ἀρκούµενοι τοῖς παροῦσιν. αὐτὸς γὰρ εἴρηκεν οὐ µή σε ἀνῶ οὐδ οὐ µή σε ἐγκαταλίπω, 6 ὥστε θαρροῦντας ἡµᾶς λέγειν κύριος ἐµοὶ βοηθός, [καὶ] οὐ φοβηθήσοµαι, τί ποιήσει µοι ἄνθρωπος; 7 Μνηµονεύετε τῶν ἡγουµένων ὑµῶν, οἵτινες ἐλάλησαν ὑµῖν τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ, ὧν ἀναθεωροῦντες τὴν ἔκβασιν τῆς ἀναστροφῆς µιµεῖσθε τὴν πίστιν. 8 Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ἐχθὲς καὶ σήµερον ὁ αὐτὸς καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. 9 ιδαχαῖς ποικίλαις καὶ ξέναις µὴ παραφέρεσθε καλὸν γὰρ χάριτι βεβαιοῦσθαι τὴν καρδίαν, οὐ βρώµασιν ἐν οἷς οὐκ ὠφελήθησαν οἱ περιπατοῦντες. 10 ἔχοµεν θυσιαστήριον ἐξ οὗ φαγεῖν οὐκ ἔχουσιν ἐξουσίαν οἱ τῇ σκηνῇ λατρεύοντες. 11 ὧν γὰρ εἰσφέρεται ζῴων τὸ αἷµα περὶ ἁµαρτίας εἰς τὰ ἅγια διὰ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, τούτων τὰ σώµατα κατακαίεται ἔξω τῆς παρεµβολῆς. 12 ιὸ καὶ Ἰησοῦς, ἵνα ἁγιάσῃ διὰ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵµατος τὸν λαόν, ἔξω τῆς πύλης ἔπαθεν. 13 τοίνυν ἐξερχώµεθα πρὸς αὐτὸν ἔξω τῆς παρεµβολῆς τὸν ὀνειδισµὸν αὐτοῦ φέροντες 14 οὐ γὰρ ἔχοµεν ὧδε µένουσαν πόλιν ἀλλὰ τὴν µέλλουσαν ἐπιζητοῦµεν. 15 ι αὐτοῦ [οὖν] ἀναφέρωµεν θυσίαν αἰνέσεως διὰ παντὸς τῷ θεῷ, τοῦτ ἔστιν καρπὸν χειλέων ὁµολογούντων τῷ ὀνόµατι αὐτοῦ. 16 τῆς δὲ εὐποιΐας καὶ κοινωνίας µὴ ἐπιλανθάνεσθε τοιαύταις γὰρ θυσίαις εὐαρεστεῖται ὁ θεός.

7 7 Luke 14:1 One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. Luke 14:1 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. Luke 14:1 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκόν τινος τῶν ἀρχόντων [τῶν] Φαρισαίων σαββάτῳ φαγεῖν ἄρτον καὶ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν παρατηρούµενοι αὐτόν. Luke 14:7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this person,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." 12 He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just." Luke 14:7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; 9 and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." 12 He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Luke 14:7 Ἔλεγεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς κεκληµένους παραβολήν, ἐπέχων πῶς τὰς πρωτοκλισίας ἐξελέγοντο, λέγων πρὸς αὐτούς 8 ὅταν κληθῇς ὑπό τινος εἰς γάµους, µὴ κατακλιθῇς εἰς τὴν πρωτοκλισίαν, µήποτε ἐντιµότερός σου ᾖ κεκληµένος ὑπ αὐτοῦ, 9 καὶ ἐλθὼν ὁ σὲ καὶ αὐτὸν καλέσας ἐρεῖ σοι δὸς τούτῳ τόπον, καὶ τότε ἄρξῃ µετὰ αἰσχύνης τὸν ἔσχατον τόπον κατέχειν. 10 ἀλλ ὅταν κληθῇς, πορευθεὶς ἀνάπεσε εἰς τὸν ἔσχατον τόπον, ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὁ κεκληκώς σε ἐρεῖ σοι φίλε, προσανάβηθι ἀνώτερον τότε ἔσται σοι δόξα ἐνώπιον πάντων τῶν συνανακειµένων σοι. 11 ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὑψῶν ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται, καὶ ὁ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται. 12 Ἔλεγεν δὲ καὶ τῷ κεκληκότι αὐτόν ὅταν ποιῇς ἄριστον ἢ δεῖπνον, µὴ φώνει τοὺς φίλους σου µηδὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου µηδὲ τοὺς συγγενεῖς σου µηδὲ γείτονας πλουσίους, µήποτε καὶ αὐτοὶ ἀντικαλέσωσίν σε καὶ γένηται ἀνταπόδοµά σοι. 13 ἀλλ ὅταν δοχὴν ποιῇς, κάλει πτωχούς, ἀναπείρους, χωλούς, τυφλούς 14 καὶ µακάριος ἔσῃ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔχουσιν ἀνταποδοῦναί σοι, ἀνταποδοθήσεται γάρ σοι ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει τῶν δικαίων.
