1 1 Twenty first Sunday after Pentecost (A) or 21 st Sunday of Pentecost (A) Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Psalm 90:1-6, // Leviticus 19:1-2, Psalm 1 // 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 Matthew 22:34-46 Deuteronomy 34:1 Then Moses hiked up from the Moabite plains to Mount Nebo, the peak of the Pisgah slope, which faces Jericho. The LORD showed him the whole land: the Gilead region as far as Dan's territory; 2 all the parts belonging to Naphtali along with the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, as well as the entirety of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea; 3 also the arid southern plain, and the plain-- including the Jericho Valley, Palm City--as far as Zoar. 4 Then the LORD said to Moses: "This is the land that I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I promised: 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have shown it to you with your own eyes; however, you will not cross over into it." 5 Then Moses, the LORD's servant, died--right there in the land of Moab, according to the LORD's command. 6 The Lord buried him in a valley in Moabite country across from Beth-peor. Even now, no one knows where Moses' grave is. 7 Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyesight wasn't impaired, and his vigor hadn't diminished a bit. 8 Back down in the Moabite plains, the Israelites mourned Moses' death for thirty days. At that point, the time for weeping and for mourning Moses was over. 9 Joshua, Nun's son, was filled with wisdom because Moses had placed his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to Joshua, and they did exactly what the LORD commanded Moses. 10 No prophet like Moses has yet emerged in Israel; Moses knew the LORD face-to-face! 11 That's not even to mention all those signs and wonders that the LORD sent Moses to do in Egypt--to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to his entire land-- 12 as well as all the extraordinary power that Moses displayed before Israel's own eyes! Deuteronomy 34:1 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the LORD showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, 2 all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, 3 the Negeb, and the Plain-- that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees-- as far as Zoar. 4 The LORD said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants'; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there." 5 Then Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab, at the LORD's command. 6 He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. 7 Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. 8 The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. 9 Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the LORD had commanded Moses. 10 Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. 11 He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, 12 and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. Deuteronomy 34:1 καὶ ἀνέβη Μωυσῆς ἀπὸ Αραβωθ Μωαβ ἐπὶ τὸ ὄρος Ναβαυ ἐπὶ κορυφὴν Φασγα ἥ ἐστιν ἐπὶ προσώπου Ιεριχω καὶ ἔδειξεν αὐτῷ κύριος πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Γαλααδ ἕως αν 2 καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Νεφθαλι καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Εφραιµ καὶ Μανασση καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Ιουδα ἕως τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς ἐσχάτης 3 καὶ τὴν ἔρηµον καὶ τὰ περίχωρα Ιεριχω πόλιν φοινίκων ἕως Σηγωρ 4 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν αὕτη ἡ γῆ ἣν ὤµοσα Αβρααµ καὶ Ισαακ καὶ Ιακωβ λέγων τῷ σπέρµατι ὑµῶν δώσω αὐτήν καὶ ἔδειξα αὐτὴν τοῖς ὀφθαλµοῖς σου καὶ ἐκεῖ οὐκ εἰσελεύσῃ 5 καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν Μωυσῆς οἰκέτης κυρίου ἐν γῇ Μωαβ διὰ ῥήµατος κυρίου 6 καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν ἐν Γαι ἐν γῇ Μωαβ ἐγγὺς οἴκου Φογωρ καὶ οὐκ οἶδεν οὐδεὶς τὴν ταφὴν αὐτοῦ ἕως τῆς ἡµέρας ταύτης 7 Μωυσῆς δὲ ἦν ἑκατὸν καὶ εἴκοσι ἐτῶν ἐν τῷ τελευτᾶν αὐτόν οὐκ ἠµαυρώθησαν οἱ

3 3 Psalm 90:1 A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our help, generation after generation. 2 Before the mountains were born, before you birthed the earth and the inhabited world-- from forever in the past to forever in the future, you are God. 3 You return people to dust, saying, "Go back, humans," 4 because in your perspective a thousand years are like yesterday past, like a short period during the night watch. 5 You sweep humans away like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning. 6 True, in the morning it thrives, renewed, but come evening it withers, all dried up. 7 Yes, we are wasting away because of your wrath; we are paralyzed with fear on account of your rage. 8 You put our sins right in front of you, set our hidden faults in the light from your face. 9 Yes, all our days slip away because of your fury; we finish up our years with a whimper. 10 We live at best to be seventy years old, maybe eighty, if we're strong. But their duration brings hard work and trouble because they go by so quickly. And then we fly off. 11 Who can comprehend the power of your anger? The honor that is due you corresponds to your wrath. 12 Teach us to number our days so we can have a wise heart. 13 Come back to us, LORD! Please, quick! Have some compassion for your servants! 14 Fill us full every morning with your faithful love so we can rejoice and celebrate our whole life long. 15 Make us happy for the same amount of time that you afflicted us-- for the same number of years that we saw only trouble. 16 Let your acts be seen by your servants; let your glory be seen by their children. 17 Let the kindness of the Lord our God be over us. Make the work of our hands last. Make the work of our hands last! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. 13 Turn, O LORD! How long? Have compassion on your servants! 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad as many days as you have afflicted us, and as many years as we have seen evil. 16 Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands-- O prosper the work of our hands! 5 5 Leviticus 19:1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 Say to the whole community of the Israelites: You must be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy. 3 Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must keep my sabbaths; I am the LORD your God. 4 Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal for yourselves; I am the LORD your God. 5 When you sacrifice a communal sacrifice of well-being to the LORD, offer it so that it will be accepted on your account. 6 It must be eaten on the day of your sacrifice or the following day; whatever is left over on the third day must be burned with fire. 7 If any of it is eaten on the third day, it is foul; it will not be accepted. 8 Anyone who eats it will be liable to punishment, because they defiled what is holy to the LORD. That person will be cut off from their people. 9 When you harvest your land's produce, you must not harvest all the way to the edge of your field; and don't gather up every remaining bit of your harvest. 10 Also do not pick your vineyard clean or gather up all the grapes that have fallen there. Leave these items for the poor and the immigrant; I am the LORD your God. 11 You must not steal nor deceive nor lie to each other. 12 You must not swear falsely by my name, desecrating your God's name in doing so; I am the LORD. 13 You must not oppress your neighbors or rob them. Do not withhold a hired laborer's pay overnight. 14 You must not insult a deaf person or put some obstacle in front of a blind person that would cause them to trip. Instead, fear your God; I am the LORD. 15 You must not act unjustly in a legal case. Do not show favoritism to the poor or deference to the great; you must judge your fellow Israelites fairly. 16 Do not go around slandering your people. Do not stand by while your neighbor's blood is shed; I am the LORD. 17 You must not hate your fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your fellow Israelite strongly, so you don't become responsible for his sin. 18 You must not take revenge nor hold a grudge against any of your people; instead, you must love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:1 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. 3 You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. 4 Do not turn to idols or make cast images for yourselves: I am the LORD your God. 5 When you offer a sacrifice of well-being to the LORD, offer it in such a way that it is acceptable on your behalf. 6 It shall be eaten on the same day you offer it, or on the next day; and anything left over until the third day shall be consumed in fire. 7 If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination; it will not be acceptable. 8 All who eat it shall be subject to punishment, because they have profaned what is holy to the LORD; and any such person shall be cut off from the people. 9 When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God. 11 You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. 12 And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the LORD. 13 You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. 14 You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the LORD. 15 You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the LORD. 17 You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:1 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων 2 λάλησον τῇ συναγωγῇ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς ἅγιοι ἔσεσθε ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιος κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑµῶν 3 ἕκαστος πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ µητέρα αὐτοῦ φοβείσθω καὶ τὰ σάββατά µου φυλάξεσθε ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑµῶν 4 οὐκ ἐπακολουθήσετε εἰδώλοις καὶ θεοὺς χωνευτοὺς οὐ ποιήσετε ὑµῖν ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑµῶν 5 καὶ ἐὰν θύσητε θυσίαν σωτηρίου τῷ κυρίῳ δεκτὴν ὑµῶν θύσετε 6 ᾗ ἂν ἡµέρᾳ θύσητε βρωθήσεται καὶ τῇ αὔριον καὶ ἐὰν καταλειφθῇ ἕως ἡµέρας τρίτης ἐν πυρὶ κατακαυθήσεται 7 ἐὰν δὲ βρώσει βρωθῇ τῇ ἡµέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ ἄθυτόν ἐστιν οὐ δεχθήσεται 8 ὁ δὲ ἔσθων αὐτὸ ἁµαρτίαν λήµψεται ὅτι τὰ ἅγια κυρίου ἐβεβήλωσεν καὶ ἐξολεθρευθήσονται αἱ ψυχαὶ αἱ ἔσθουσαι ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτῶν 9 καὶ ἐκθεριζόντων ὑµῶν τὸν θερισµὸν τῆς γῆς ὑµῶν οὐ συντελέσετε τὸν θερισµὸν ὑµῶν τοῦ ἀγροῦ ἐκθερίσαι καὶ τὰ ἀποπίπτοντα τοῦ θερισµοῦ σου οὐ συλλέξεις 10 καὶ τὸν ἀµπελῶνά σου οὐκ ἐπανατρυγήσεις οὐδὲ τοὺς ῥῶγας τοῦ ἀµπελῶνός σου συλλέξεις τῷ πτωχῷ καὶ τῷ προσηλύτῳ καταλείψεις αὐτά ἐγώ εἰµι κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑµῶν 11 οὐ κλέψετε οὐ ψεύσεσθε οὐ συκοφαντήσει ἕκαστος τὸν πλησίον 12 καὶ οὐκ ὀµεῖσθε τῷ

7 צ ם 7 Psalm 1:1 The truly happy person doesn't follow wicked advice, doesn't stand on the road of sinners, and doesn't sit with the disrespectful. 2 Instead of doing those things, these persons love the LORD's Instruction, and they recite God's Instruction day and night! 3 They are like a tree replanted by streams of water, which bears fruit at just the right time and whose leaves don't fade. Whatever they do succeeds. 4 That's not true for the wicked! They are like dust that the wind blows away. 5 And that's why the wicked will have no standing in the court of justice-- neither will sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 The LORD is intimately acquainted with the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is destroyed. Psalm 1:1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; 2 but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. 8 8 1 Thessalonians 2:1 As you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, our visit with you wasn't a waste of time. 2 On the contrary, we had the courage through God to speak God's good news in spite of a lot of opposition, although we had already suffered and were publicly insulted, as you know. 3 Our appeal isn't based on false information, the wrong motives, or deception. 4 Rather, we have been examined and approved by God to be trusted with the good news, and that's exactly how we speak. We aren't trying to please people, but we are trying to please God, who continues to examine our hearts. 5 As you know, we never used flattery, and God is our witness that we didn't have greedy motives. 6 We didn't ask for special treatment from people--not from you or from others-- 7 although we could have thrown our weight around as Christ's apostles. Instead, we were gentle with you like a nursing mother caring for her own children. 8 We were glad to share not only God's good news with you but also our very lives because we cared for you so much. 1 Thessalonians 2:1 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, 2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 3 For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. 5 As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; 6 nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, 7 though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. 9 9 Matthew 22:34 When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had left the Sadducees speechless, they met together. 35 One of them, a legal expert, tested him. 36 "Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 He replied, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You must love your neighbor as you love yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands." 41 Now as the Pharisees were gathering, Jesus asked them, 42 "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?""david's son," they replied. 43 He said, " Then how is it that David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, called him Lord when he said, 44 The Lord said to my lord, 'Sit at my right side until I turn your enemies into your footstool'? 45 If David calls him Lord, how can he be David's son?" 46 Nobody was able to answer him. And from that day forward nobody dared to ask him anything. Matthew 22:34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" 37 He said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42 "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 44 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet" '? 45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?" 46 No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
