Apolytikion of St. Nicholas The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel. St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 3:9-17 BRETHREN, we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder. I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are. Τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν, βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων, ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος. Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν. Οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν. Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν [ὁ Ιησοῦς] αὐτοῖς λέγων, Θαρσεῖτε, ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε. Βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ἐφοβήθη, καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων, Κύριε, σῶσόν με. Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ιησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Ολιγόπιστε, εἰς τί ἐδίστασας;καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος. The Gospel of Matthew 14:22-34 At that time, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they entered the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.

4 The Dormition of the Theotokos The feast of the Dormition or Falling-asleep of the Theotokos is celebrated on the fifteenth of August, preceded by a two-week fast. This feast, which is also sometimes called the Assumption, commemorates the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ s mother. It proclaims that Mary has been assumed by God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ in the fullness of her spiritual and bodily existence.as with the nativity of the Virgin and the feast of her entrance to the temple, there are no biblical or historical sources for this feast. The Tradition of the Church is that Mary died as all people die, not voluntarily as her Son, but by the necessity of her mortal human nature which is indivisibly bound up with the corruption of this world.the Orthodox Church teaches that Mary is without personal sins. In the Gospel of the feast, however, in the liturgical services and in the Dormition icon, the Church proclaims as well that Mary truly needed to be saved by Christ as all human persons are saved from the trials, sufferings and death of this world; and that having truly died, she was raised up by her Son as the Mother of Life and participates already in the eternal life of paradise which is prepared and promised to all who hear the word of God and keep it. (Luke 11:27-28)In giving birth, you preserved your virginity. In failing asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were translated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death. (Troparion)Neither the tomb, nor death, could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life, by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb. (Kontakion)The services of the feast repeat the main theme, that the Mother of Life has passed over into the heavenly joy, into the divine gladness and unending delight of the Kingdom of her Son. (Vesper verse) The Old Testament readings, as well as the gospel readings for the Vigil and the Divine Liturgy, are exactly the same as those for the feast of the Virgin s nativity and her entrance into the Temple. Thus, at the Vigil we again hear Mary say: My soul magnifies the Lord and my Spirit rejoices in God my Saviour. (Luke 1:47) At the Divine Liturgy we hear the letter to the Philippians where St. Paul speaks of the self-emptying of Christ who condescends to human servitude and ignoble death in order to be highly exalted by God his Father. (Philippians 2:5-11) And once again we hear in the Gospel that Mary s blessedness belongs to all who hear the word of God and keep it. (Luke 11:27-28)Thus, the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is the celebration of the fact that all men are highly exalted in the blessedness of the victorious Christ, and that this high exaltation has already been accomplished in Mary the Theotokos. The feast of the Dormition is the sign, the guarantee, and the celebration that Mary s fate is, the destiny of all those of low estate whose souls magnify the Lord, whose spirits rejoice in God the Saviour, whose lives are totally dedicated to hearing and keeping the Word of God which is given to men in Mary s child, the Saviour and Redeemer of the world.finally it must be stressed that, in all of the feasts of the Virgin Mother of God in the Church, the Orthodox Christians celebrate facts of their own lives in Christ and the Holy Spirit. What happens to Mary happens to all who imitate her holy life of humility, obedience, and love. With her all people will be blessed to be more honorable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim if they follow her example. All will have Christ born in them by the Holy Spirit. All will become temples of the living God. All will share in the eternal life of His Kingdom who live the life that Mary lived.in this sense everything that is praised and glorified in Mary is a sign of what is offered to all persons in the life of the Church. It is for this reason that Mary, with the divine child Jesus within her, is call in the Orthodox Tradition the Image of the Church. For the assembly of the saved is those in whom Christ dwells.it is the custom in some churches to bless flowers on the feast of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos.

5 Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου Εορτή μεγάλη και πανήγυρις λαμπρά η εορτή της Κοιμήσεως τη Θεοτόκου. Τη γιορτάζει με πολλή χαρά ο Ορθόδοξος κόσμος σ όλη την οικουμένη. Τρέχουμε οι πιστοί στους Ναούς μας, μάλιστα σ αυτούς που είναι αφιερωμένη στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου, τρέχουμε με αγαλλίαση και ευφροσύνη να ψάλουμε τους θαυμάσιους ύμνους της εορτής και να γιορτάσουμε με χαρά τη μεγαλύτερη θεομητορική εορτή του έτους, το Πάσχα του καλοκαιριού. Χαρά, εορτή, πανηγύρι! Γιατί όμως; Γιατί όλη αυτή η λαμπρότητα και ο ενθουσιασμός; Γιατί οι ύμνοι και οι ευχές, η τόση χαρά στα πρόσωπα και στις ψυχές; Θάνατο έχουμε, και ο θάνατος πάντοτε ήταν θλιβερό γεγονός. Από τότε όμως που γεύθηκε τον θάνατος ο Υιός του Θεού, ο Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός, και ανέστη εκ νεκρών, κατήργησε τον θάνατο για όλο το ανθρώπινο γένος. Όσοι πιστεύουν στον σταυρωθέντα και αναστάντα Κύριο δεν φοβούνται πλέον τον θάνατο, διότι γνωρίζουν ότι αυτός είναι ένα πέρασμα από τα επίγεια στα ουράνια, από τα πρόσκαιρα στα αιώνια, από τα λυπηρά στα ευχάριστα, στα μακάρια και δοξασμένα. Ο θάνατος του πιστού δεν είναι μόνο γεγονός που προκαλεί τον πόνο και τα δάκρυα. Είναι γεγονός που προκαλεί πιο πολύ τη χαρά. Πολύ περισσότερο ο θάνατος των αγίων είναι η ημέρα της λυτρώσεώς τους από τα θλιβερά της επιγείου ζωής και της θριαμβευτικής εισόδου τους στον άφθαρτο και πανένδοξο κόσμο του ουρανού, στα μακάρια ζωή της Βασιλείας του Θεού. Γι αυτό τους αγίους τους γιορτάζουμε στην η- μέρα της Κοιμήσεώς τους. Αλλ αν αυτά ισχύουν για κάθε πιστό και πιο πολύ για τους αγίους μας, τι πρέπει να ισχύει για την «Κεχαριτωμένη», τη στολισμένη με εξαιρετικές χάριτες από τον Θεό γυναίκα, που έφερε στον κόσμο τον νικητή του θανάτου, για εκείνη που ο ουρανός την αναγνώρισε ως «ευλογημένην εν γυναιξί», ευλογημένη από τον Θεό όσο καμιά άλλη γυναίκα, γι αυτήν που αξιώθηκε να γίνει η Μητέρα του Θεού; Ο θάνατος της υπερευλογημένης Μητέρας του Θεού είναι ένας θρίαμβος, η κοίμησή της η πιο μεγάλη γιορτή. «Η των ουρανών υψηλοτέρα υπάρχουσα, και των Χερουβίμ ενδοξοτέρα, και πάσης κτίσεως τιμιωτέρα», αυτή που είναι πιο ψηλά από τους ουρανούς, και έχει δόξα μεγαλύτερη από τη δόξα των χερουβικών δυνάμεων, αυτή που είναι πιο τιμημένη απ όλη τη δημιουργία του Θεού, που λόγω της υπερθαύμαστης καθαρότητάς της δέχθηκε μέσα της τον αΐδιο Θεό, «εν ταις του Υιού χερσί σήμερον την παναγίαν παρατίθεται ψυχήν, και συν αυτή πληρούνται τα σύμπνατα χαράς», ψάλλει θριαμβευτικά ο ιερός υμνογράφος. Την παναγία, την πανάμωμη, την ελεύθερη από κάθε κηλίδα κακού ψυχή της την παραδίδει στα άγια και άχραντα χέ ρια του Θεού και Θεού της, χαίρει, χαίρει μεγάλη χαρά η ίδια που βρίσκεται στους κόσμους του ουρανού, δέχεται τα αιώνια βραβεία της απαράμιλλης αρετής της και την αμοιβή της ταπεινής υπακοής της και απολαμβάνει και αντανακλά την απερίγραπτη δόξα του Υιού της. Μαζί της γεμίζουν από ανεκλάλητη χαρά τα σύμπαντα, όλος ο κόσμος του ουρανού και της γης συμμετέχει στα χαρά της. Χαίρουν οι άγγελοι του ουρανού και δοξάζουν την Κοίμησή της «Εξουσίαι, Θρόνοι, Αρχαί, Κυριότητες, Δυνάμεις και Χερουβίμ και τα φρικτά Σεραφίμ». Ο Κύριος μας διαβεβαίωσε ότι μεγάλη χαρά έχουν οι άγγελοι του ουρανού όταν ένας αμαρτωλός άνθρωπος μετανοεί και επίσης ότι άγγελοι συνοδεύουν αυτούς που πορεύονται προς τη ζωή της αιωνιότητας. Πόση επομένως χαρά έχουν, πώς πανηγυρίζουν και πώς υποδέχονται στους ολόφωτους κόσμους του ουρανού αυτήν που έγινε η Μητέρα του Λυτρωτή όλου του κόσμου! Οι άγγελοι που διακονούν πρόθυμα τη μεγάλη υπόθεση της σωτηρίας μας και χαίρονται πολύ για τη σωτηρία μας, πόσο περισσότερο χαίρουν και τιμούν αυτήν που διακόνησε κατά μοναδικό τρόπο τη σωτηρία του κόσμου, που υπήρξε η Μητέρα του Σωτήρος του κόσμου! Αγάλλονται όμως και οι «γηγενείς», οι άνθρωποι, οι κάτοικοι της γης χαιρόμαστε μαζί με τους αγγέλους, καθώς με ιερό δέος βλέπουμε σήμερα «εκ ζωής εις ζωήν μεθισταμένην την τεκούσαν τον αρχηγόν της ζωής», αυτήν που γέννησε τον αρχηγό της ζωής να φεύγει από την πρόσκαιρη ζωή της γης και να εισέρχεται στην αιώνια ζωή της ουρανίου Βασιλείας. Είναι δίκαιο και πρέπον να απολαύσει τώρα την ουράνια τιμή που της αξίζει, να έχει τη μεγαλύτερη δόξα απ όλους τους ανθρώπους, να είναι ανωτέρα απ όλους τους αγγέλους, βασίλισσα των ουρανών. Όλα αυτά μας δίνουν χαρά, διότι η Μητέρα του Θεού είναι ό,τι ευγενέστερο και ανώτερο είχε να προσφέρει ο κόσμος των ανθρώπων στον Θεό. Και ο Θεός τώρα την τιμά με ασύγκριτη ουράνια δόξα και αυτή η δόξα αντανακλά σ όλους μας και είναι αυτό αφορμή χαρά για όλους μας. «Αγάλλονται γηγενείς επί τη θεία σου δόξη κοσμούμενοι». Χαιρόμαστε οι πιστοί, διότι η Μητέρα του Θεού είναι Μητέρα όλων μας και γι αυτό με την Κοίμησή της δεν εγκαταλείπει τον κόσμο, αλλά πολύ περισσότερο τώρα, με την παρρησία που έχει, πρεσβεύει στον Υιό της για μας και με τις πρεσβείες της σκεπάζει όλους τους πιστούς «λυτρουμένη εκ θανάτου τας ψυχάς ημών».
