Ἀλώπηξ λέοντι συνῆν ἐν ὑπηρέτου προσχήματι 2 καὶ ἡ μὲν 3 ἄγρας ἐμήνυεν, ὁ δὲ ἐμπίπτων ἐλάμβανεν ἑκατέρῳ τοίνυν πρὸς τὴν ἀξίαν διῃρεῖτο 4 μερίς. ζηλοτυπήσασα 5 δὲ ἡ ἀλώπηξ τῶν πλειόνων τὸν λέοντα, θηρᾶν ἀντὶ 6 τοῦ μηνύειν ᾑρεῖτο, καὶ πειρωμένη ποίμνης τι λαβεῖν, κατέστη 7 πρώτη τοῖς θηρῶσιν 8 εἰς θήραμα. Ἄρχεσθαι μᾶλλον ἀσφαλῶς ἄμεινον ἢ κρατεῖν σφαλερῶς.

Ἔκλαιεν οὖν ἑαυτὸν ὁ λέων καὶ τῆς δειλίας κατεμέμφετο καὶ τέλος ἀποθανεῖν ἤθελεν. Οὕτω δὲ γνώμης ἔχων 17 ἐλέφαντι περιτυγχάνει, καὶ προσαγορεύσας εἱστήκει 18 διαλεγόμενος, καὶ ὁρῶν διαπαντὸς τὰ ὦτα κινοῦντα "Τί πάσχεις; ἔφη, καὶ τί ποτε οὐδὲ μικρὸν ἀτρεμεῖ σου τὸ οὖς; " Καὶ ὁ ἐλέφας, κατὰ τυχὴν περιπτάντος 19 αὐτῷ κώνωπος "Ὁρᾷς, ἔφη, τοῦτο τὸ βραχύ, τὸ βομβοῦν 20 ; ἢν 21 εἰσδύνῃ 22 μου τῇ τῆς ἀκοῆς ὁδῷ, τέθνηκα." Καὶ ὁ λέων "Τί οὖν ἔτι ἀποθνῄσκειν, ἔφη, με δεῖ τοσοῦτον ὄντα καὶ ἐλέφαντος εὐτυχέστερον ὅσῳ κρείττων κώνωπος ὁ ἀλεκτρυών;" 23 Ὁρᾷς ὅσον ἰσχύος ὁ κώνωψ ἔχει, ὡς καὶ ἐλεφαντα φοβεῖν. 24

4 NOTES 1 παραινέω > ῶ = to advise 2 ἐν ὑπηρέτου προσχήματι = in the capacity of a servant, i.e. as a servant. 3 ἀλώπηξ, ἀλώπηκος, ἡ = note that the name of the fox is a feminine noun. 4 διαιρέομαι > διαιροῦμαι = to divide, share 5 ζηλοτυπέω > ῶ = to be jealous of (someone in the acc for a reason in the genitive) 6 ἀντί + gen = instead of 7 κατέστη (3rd sg root aorist of καθίστημι) εἰς θήραμα = became a prey less23.read, p4 8 present participle of θηράω > ῶ = to catch, hunt 9 ἀναιρέομαι = to pull up 10 πλήρης, πλῆρες = full of + genitive 11 ὑπεξέδυνε, a rare form instead of the imperfect ὑπεξεδύετο, of ὑπεκδύομαι= to slip out of 12 ἁπλόω > ῶ = to flatten; ἡπλώθη = he lay stretched out. 13 ἴδοις ἂν = you may, might, are likely to see 14 πλάσσω / πλάττω = to mould, form 15 //ὢν// τοιοῦτος = //I, being// such 16 Imperfect of δύναμαι = to be able. A deponent μι -verb, to be studied later 17 οὕτω δὲ γνώμης ἔχων is an example of ἔχω + an adverb = to be in a certain state, mood. Translate: Being in this state of mind...

Translate: was standing or stood. 19 Genitive aorist participle of περιπέτομαι = to fly around, fly by 20 βομβέω> ῶ = to sound deep, buzz 21 ἤν = ἐάν 22 εἰσδύνω = to slip into, enter 23 main clause noun clause, S of δεῖ noun clause, S of δεῖ...
